Herro....
I don't think this car really needs that much of an introduction as I'm sure most of you may (or possibly may not) recognize it.
Picked this up from Edgar earlier this week after my last daily was stolen the Friday before Turkey Day and was recovered the following Wednesday in an even ****tier condition than it left. lol So the Celica is going to continue to serve daily duties for me as it did the previous owners.
Anywho, it's been about 9 years since I was last in a 6GC and I'm happy to be back in one. I have a few things planned for it, but trying to prioritize some other plans first before I can set funds aside for the car.
I'd post more pictures, but it's cold as bawls and it's raining/snowing/sleeting down here and I've been working 15 hour days.
Ngo kidding. I nearly shat myself.
Time to update that sig. How does it drive? How do you like it compared to the Accord Supra?
Happy to see you back in one Alex.
Like I said, let me know if you need interior stuff.
MOAR MODS!!!
Psssh, a Supra is never done.
Shots fired!!!!
Eh, that’s just part of getting married. What’s hers is hers and what’s mine is hers, we compromise and do things her way, and since I’m not trying to impress anybody anymore I might as well eat what I want and get fat.
If you're going to do that then don't get a pool and the accompanying pool boy.
so who is this guy?
idk but hes not very popular on here
Hope you give it a good home and keep me update with whatever you do!
So, I finally was able to get the car up in the air to check out what's going on underneath. Looks like I have some work cut out for me, but it's ok....sorta... Kind of expected it. There's a few spots of surface rust here and there that I need to take care of with either some primer or POR15. Main concern is one of the mounting points on the rear subframe for one of the stabilizer bars/arms thing. I'm hoping the rust isn't too bad there where I can just sand it down and clean it up.
One of the rear springs is experiencing some surface rust as well. Debating if I wanna replace with a new spring/strut combo or get coilovers for it.... Bags would be cool doe.... Stuntin' on bags of disappointment with my GT-2!
The mounting hanger for the exhaust by the muffler completely rusted off, so there's a quarter-sized hole sitting there and the exhaust is just now chilling out. May either replace it with another custom 3" exhaust utilizing an oval section under the axle or picking up an HKS Silent Hi-Power or a Fujitsubo exhaust for it.
Car is leaking oil in a few places: Valve covers and turbo oil line for sure. With that said, I ordered a complete engine gasket overhaul kit to replace all seals for the engine. Also ordered some viton valve steam seals and the 2 Hose from Hell pieces. Figured while I was at it, might as well give it a solid tune-up with a new water pump & belt along with an oil pump. My mechanic is going to have a field day with this one. lol Do need to sort out the temp dial AC/Heater situation though with Houston's literal bipolar weather.
For the time being, got the Celica a Christmas present with some S2 JDM tail lights. Need to go borrow some tools now to switch them out since some turd wads thought it was cool to steal my last daily and take my tools that were in it. :\
The Recaros are for the Supra since the driver's seat motor is going out. Just need to order seat rails and sliders for it. They may find their way into the Celica at some point assuming I can find a deal on another set of Recaros, Brides, Braums, or Status seats. Both front seats do need to be recovered though and that may end up being the route I go as it's cheaper and I can do the work myself.
Aside from that, enjoying the mess out of the car and bringing disappointment to all who ask "Is that all-wheel drive?" I can see the light slowly fade from their eyes when I say, "Ngo....."
Quick pic with the poopra before it goes off for a new clutch. Spec stage 2 clutch in the Celica made the stock clutch in the Supra feel non-existent. That was weird.... lol
#ReindeerGang
Hmmm, if you could find some new old stock Tein or Tanabe coil-overs. I looked at some point not long ago and found some Tein ones. Otherwise it's all Taiwanese parts bin stuff as far as new sets go.
I've considered used coil overs, but am concerned about remaining life on them and at what point they'll need a rebuild. If it comes down to it, I'm juggling between BC Racing or Fortune Autos. Either one with the Swift Springs upgrade. By the looks of it, Blitz still offers coilovers for this chassis as well.
Sadly the Blitz appear to be done by BC now, I had found them and got excited but upon closer inspection of photos and specs they're just like the Megan and BC stuff. There's some new old stock Tein out there, just a quick eBay search: https://www.ebay.com/itm/1994-1999-Toyota-Celica-Tein-Super-Street-Coilovers-Coils-Adjustable-Lowering/191654052948?fits=Model%3ACelica&epid=1737488808&hash=item2c9f78c454:g:acYAAOSwHnFVwjDh&vxp=mtr
I think I found them cheaper on places like Amazon.jp and Rakuten, but rather or not you could get them to ship to the U.S. I dunno.
Glad to see you are taking good care of it.
Most of the rust that you are seeing on the rear sub frame should just be on the surface. I would just sand it down and treat it with POR15. Same deal with the springs. They are not that old so unless you want to upgrade the suspension for performance reasons, I wouldn't mess with it. The exhaust was made with aluminized steel at least 10 years ago, so I'm not surprised that you found some rust issues with it. I would honestly just drive it until it fully deteriorates.
I would recommend replacing the power steering pump too. Thats where 90% of the oil mess you are seeing is coming from. It was always on my to-do list.
Doing the front and rear control arm bushings would also be a good idea and a cheap DIY project.
As for the climate control, I had an issue with the temp adjustment getting stuck and not wanting to go full cold/hot. I disconnected the cable from the coolant line in the engine bay and just manually set it by hand to the temp I wanted. I think the issue might be with the climate control unit. Should be a pretty easy and cheap fix to replace it with a used unit.
If the climate control unit is the issue, I believe I have a spare. Needs LED’s or new bulbsbut otherwise functional. I have your other stuff ready to ship so I can add that to it if you’d like.
rust you say.. dont grind the rust, chemically treat it. get rid of the rust and not the metal....
blasting would be the most ideal... but sometimes cant get it.. chemically treat it and then do por15 to seal it...
I thought por15 really only sticks to bare metal.
Nah, it doesn’t like bare metal. It sticks best to rust.
Got the car a Christmas present and updated the meh S1 series tail lights to the more organized S2 tails. Now trying to figure out what to do with the old tail lights.
Other than that, still waiting on the Supra to be done as this is currently how she sits at my mechanic's shop:
He's fiddling with it in his spare time to get the clutch replaced, but I'm not worried as it's free storage for me since my mom's new Accord is taking up my storage unit at the moment. After the Celica goes in and gets all the leaks and mechanical stuff taken care of, I've been strongly contemplating putting both cars on the backburner to focus on other endeavours until finances improve. Feels like it'll be a slight bummer, but as long as both cars are mechanically sound, I'll be happy.
"He who chases two rabbits catches neither one."
Did find out last night that I more than likely will be replacing the struts/springs some time soon. Had a passenger in the back seat and at a few bumps and dips, the car would bottom out. Probably won't have back seat passengers all that much, but still something I don't want to deal with in the event that I do get one or two.
Other than that, been getting the opportunity to work on some gorgeous VW Beetles since the holidays have come and gone.
Sapphire Blue Pearl is a 2015 3.8L twin turbo with the PDK transmission and an aftermarket exhaust. Loud as phuc in that shop on cold start, but sounds sexy as hell.
This one came in for our full front Xpel clear bra wrap and CeramicPro Silver package ceramic coating.
While this one received a full car Xpel clear bra wrap and CeramicPro Silver package about a month ago and came for some Xpel touch-up and a quick wash (literally spritz the car with quick detailer and wiped it down in 5 minutes with a microfiber towel. Clear bra + CeramicPro = Nguyening!).
2018 Chalk coloured 4.0L NA 6-spd (returning year of the manual transmission) and the owner drives the ever-loving piss out of it.
Before the chalk one came in, my friend sent his girlfriend off to get her nails did by Tammy at Beautiful Nail to help her look like a super model or cheer leader with some crystal gel and she unknowingly had them painted to match the client's car.
Got a Land Rover Range Rover SVR in the shop at the moment and will be working on that tomorrow with some Xpel and CeramicPro as well. Can't wait.
like your fingernails.
My hands are girlier than an actual girl's, I quit.
Not sure that helps any, that's ok I really don't mind my lady hands. Hell my hair is longer than 99% of women I see, so it really doesn't bother me. I keep threatening to become a hand and hair model, maybe I should. THEN I TOO COULD AFFORD A SUPRA!
Anywho. Picked up the Supra yesterday to break in the clutch and dropped the Celica off to get all the leaks fixed and have my mechanic go over the car. He's gonna hate it like he does the Supra, but he'll live. lol Should probably have it back in a couple of weeks since I told him to take his time.
How can he hate the Supra, it's not like it's a Z32 Twin Turbo or 3000GT VR-4.
I remember watching my dad help change the spark plugs on my uncle's VR-4 back in the days. not good times. not good times at all...
Like seriously... Which it's not identical, but my MKIII Supras had plenty of room for everything and from pictures it seems the MKIV isn't really any worse. I'd much rather work on a MKIV Supra over the Z32 or 3000GT, which you're less likely to have to work on it in any state rather stock or modified. Especially the VR-4...
It's a modified vehicle. He doesn't want to fiddle with that mess as it's a liability on him if something happens, even though he knows all of the dumb **** I get into with cars. lol So with how much work has been done to this one, he's gonna hate it.
Ahhh ok, figured it was like some kind of tuning/race shop you were using. Here, get a highly modified VR-4 and bring it to him and when it breaks all the time hold him liable. Then he'll love the Supra and Celica!
Hell the VR-4 could be stock and break all the time anyway, maybe that'd be better to prove the point.
About the only update I have so far is that the car has been parked for the last month or so. Oil leak has gotten ridiculous, the car doesn't boost, and it stalls coming to a stop. My mechanic doesn't have time for the car since his two employees are out for vacation for the last month or so and it's just him running solo until they get back. So Tuesday, I'll be towing it clear across town to a friend's shop to have the overhaul done. In the mean time, the Supra has been serving daily duties and even that is starting to act up. -_- Can't catch a break.
Progress updates on the car will probably come to a halt for a while as I have received a job offer up in Dallas, so things will be changing as I get settled up there and readjust. I honestly don't want to make the move, but it's a good career opportunity and it'll pull me out of my comfort that I've settled into here at home.
Are you going to be a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader?
Dude! stop breaking stuff!
but if worse comes to worse, you can take the 2jz and put it in the celi, then come grab my 7a and put that in the supra for a super reliable daily. and MPGs for days.
I CLAIMED HIM FIRST!
Alabama is not so bad, and works out well if you're a car person. No real notable winter to speak of, salt is never used anyway we use sand, and there's no inspection or emissions testing of any sort. Then the states around you have emissions so you can pick up a car that won't pass for cheap there and bring it back here where it really doesn't matter anyway.
I broke a thing...
Car got sent off to my friend's shop so it can get a major tune-up and reseal of the motor. Hopefully it goes smoothly. lol If all goes well, should be getting it back by week's end. After that, looking over the tune to get familiar with it before I fiddle with other shizzle down the road.
Did you break something in the beauty supply store?
car supposed to take u places. Y U take car to place instead?
Well there ya go, just schedule an appointment and get that taken care of.
Don't even need to schedule an appointment. Just walk in and get **** done. lol Did that for my gf.
Ooooh, nail privileges.
see! that's what I'm talkin bout.
Everyone loves privileges!
Anywho:
Apparently I like to party. Distributor shaft is cracked. Explains some things...
Then my mechanic was like, "Hey, you have a ****load of oil in your intercooler piping....Hold on....yeah.... your turbo's blown. A lot of shaft play and oil is leaking through the compressor housing. Get a new one or get it rebuilt." Explains some more things....
So um... yeah. that's about where we are right meow with the car. Just need to get him to read me the part number on the turbo so I can order the right rebuild kit and send it off for assembly and/or re-balance.
Ordered poly shifter bushings from Lou at BRD from across the pond. Hopefully that helps with some of the "gumminess" of the shifter. If not, probably time for new shifter cables.
Well there's your problem. The fun part will be cleaning the piping and intercooler.
lol you have too much shaft play.....
ditch that engine and slap a 2gr...
Actually some aluminum safe degreaser and some boiling hot water would be.
the car's toast. it's done. probably only worth about $200 at most now.
I'll give you a deal and give you $250 to take it off your hands just because we kinda almost barely know each other.
I can beat that, $400 and a pack of Trident Layers.
nope. ngo bro hug, he ngo care.
TX2K has come and gone, so not much progress on the car. Talked it over with my friend and for the time being while the turbo is out and getting massaged, we're going to go ahead and redo all of the intercooler piping to clean it up and clock the turbo. Any loose wires will be tracked down, tucked, trimmed, and/or sleeved.
Turbo should be coming out of the car some time this week to be sent off.
Poly shifter bushings came in from across the pond, I've ordered an O2 sensor block-off plate to get rid of the unused O2 sensor that's just chilling on the downpipe looking all ugly, and ordered a purple TiAL QR BOV to replace the outdated gen 1 HKS SSQV in the event I wanna get crazy with the car down the road.
Das about it so far. Hopefully more news later this week.
Did someone say, purple?
Yup. sure did. Gonna try to sort of mimic my friend's engine bay in his Supra and see how much of that I can utilize and transfer into the Celica's bay.
TiAL QR came in today and uh.... That's about it. Pikachu approves of it doe...
I guess you could say *puts on sunglasses* he couldn't help but to peek at chu. *walks off scene*
YEEEEEAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm more interested in the family sized cheez-its....
Maybe if they were white cheddar or pepper jack.
*high fives*
I love me some white cheddar and pepper jack Cheez-Its.
I've already eaten half of the white cheddar and bought the original today. Mixed in half of the original into the white cheddar and saving that for when I'm done with the original.
Annnddd.... Turbo has been pulled from the motor, so I'm picking that up on Friday to ship out to TurboBay on Monday for some refreshing goodness.
Mmmmm white cheddar...
I mean... Mmmm... fresh turbo...
white cheddar is good.
but pepper provides that little kick just like a fresh turbo would I suppose.
I haven't tried the pepper jack yet. I'll add that to this concoction box.
That looks weird....
Definitely need to clean up and sort through the mess on the right side of the bay and see if I can find a better way to mount the fuse box.
Once I get paid from the flooring job, turbo is heading out this week.
That does look weird, why is there a Honda bag in your Toyota?
Small update:
Scored a set of poly bushings for the front upper control arms for pretty cheap from a local here. Matt at TurboBay has my turbo now and says he's gonna tear into it tomorrow morning to give me whatever news I need for it. aannndddd.... Some of these were still available from toyota:
Literally every other button is discontinued stateside though. Bi-level, Foot & defrost, and A/C. Not sure if the rear defrost button is discontinued though cuz I'm still trying to find the part number.
Those pink illuminated keys though.
Yeh.. I just finished building my new computer and went RGB on just about everything.
RGB is life.
Uhhh.... quick update.
After 2 months since sending the turbo off, it is finally on its way home. Mechanic friend is driving to Canada at the moment, so he won't be able to get to the car til mid-July, so it'll give me some time to gather up other things until he gets back.
Also ordered new Lloyd Ultimat floor mats for the car since the current ones in there don't fit, like, at all.
sneaky peeky of my turboskies before it got mailed out. Said he went with a slightly bigger wheel than normal with a new wheel he just got in, so this'll be fun.
meh... looks ok.
show me pictures of these floor mats though! that's exciting!!
Look who finally came home! He even brought a friend!
bump! still waiting for floor mat pick chars...
in car or out of car? I'm gonna make a run down to the car in a couple of weeks.
both
I'll grab pics tonight when I get home.
Also picked up the premium 8-speaker door panels as well along with the associated 4" speakers. They were in a lot better condition that I expected. Ordered the new upper window seal to replace the damaged ones and then just need to glue down that little flap of vinyl from the door insert. Should be good as new after that.
dang! you actually found some? I haven't even seen any on celicas for sale on craigslist that have them anymore. Even on ebay, they're charging $200+ for regular panels. lol
yeah. I found them on ebay. I think I may have showed them to you. unfortunately, the seller was selling the speakers separate from the panels, but eBay had a 20% coupon at the time, so I scooped them up.
I found a junk yard somewhere in the northeast that had a convertible with the door panels, but it was a pain in the dick to get them to send me better pics, so I said screw it and got these instead. I'm not complaining though. My current panels in the car are pretty minty, too, from last I remembered anyways. lolol
I still need to get pics of the mats. They're buried under stuff in the garage right now from the move and we're still trying to unpack and organize. Waiting to get kitchen counter tops done and figure out what the duck is going on with Comcast to set up our interwebs cuz our receiver box behind the house is damaged and someone from the city has to come out to fix it. In good ole Comcast fashion, they're not communicating properly with the city to get it set-up cuz someone was supposed to be by the house yesterday to fix it according to Comcast, but the city has no record of that request being put in. :\
nice! even 6gc parts are getting rare these days. Miss the good ol days when EVERYONE had 8 speaker panels for sale.
and I have yet to hear a single good thing about comcast. good luck.
ordered S51 5th gear set to install and uh.....that's about it. Should be here by mid-September.
Surgery on the car was supposed to start this week, but probably gonna end up being pushed back to next week. Gonna head down to the shop on Tuesday after work to check on progress and lend a hand if needed.
Soo....some stuff came in...
One of these finally popped up and I am super happy to have snagged it.
I don't quite like the A-pillar gauge pod set-up. While it's kinda neat, it's not my cup o' tea. Now if I can find the single pod, I'd be happy. If someone happens to have one for sale, lemme know!
It took a little while to get here from Japan, but my S51 5th (driven) gear came in along with 4 quarts of Redline MT-90 that I snagged off of Amazon.
Old floor mats
new ones from Lloyd's Ultimat line:
my dumbass thought the smoke colour would have been dark enough since that's what I had read somewhere, but I guess not. Should've just ordered black. Oh well. I'll just paint'em black with some fabric paint or something. I just need to pick up a set of OEM floor mat hooks and they'll be good to go. They fit really well and are super plush. All the more reason to drive bare foot again.... after I get rid of the aluminum pedal covers that are currently in the car....
The hybrid SouthBend Stage 2 Endurance clutch I ordered from PrimeDriven along with the ARP flywheel bolts and OEM pressure plate bolts came in. I'd say the clutch is rated to about 400ft-lb of torque or so. Should be plenty of head room for whatever shenanigans I may plan on getting into in the future.
Hopefully the pedal feel for this clutch isn't as heavy as the current Spec Stage 2 that's in the car. (Left) Leg Day e'ryday in a car that's supposed to be a daily driver isn't fun especially in traffic. The Stage 3 Endurance I have in the Supra is a dream to drive on as it feels close to stock pedal and is rated for about 675ft-lb, so hopefully the Stage 2 Endurance doesn't disappoint.
and then these sumbitches came in as well:
Figured since the cams are coming off anyways for the valve stem seals, let's have some fun and get some slightly bigger cams! These ended up being cheaper than I expected (compared to the 2JZ-GTE variants that I'm eyeballing for the Supra) and having that 15% off eBay coupon really helped seal the deal.
Even though the stock valve springs can be utilized with these, I've debated getting the matching valve springs from GSC to go with these just to be on the safe side, but budget constraints says no...for now... I may change my mind about them later if I find a money tree or something. Maybe shimless buckets, too.... #RevToTheMoon
I have a little time to decide since my friend is wrapping up another customer's car right now after the customer decided to finally start work on his car after a year of waiting. Hopefully there aren't any more hiccups and my car is up on the lift by week's end. Hoping the car will be ready by the time I get back from SEMA.
I like your bump stick, though I'm not sure on it being painted/coated? Or is that just the lighting making it look that way?
Also get new springs and lifters while you're at it, doesn't make sense to skimp and wipe the engine. At the very least o.e. replacement springs if they say o.e. is fine, then of course lifters could be ok and could just need new shims. Would just have to look at everything closely and measure specs to be sure.
..yeah....you're probably right.... I put in a quote request with Real Street for a set... lol
oi....
They're billet cams, so i'm not sure what coating/finish they put on the cams.
I know it sucks having to spend more money than you really want to, but it's one of those things where trying to save a little money can cost you a lot more. Valve float isn't fun or delicious like soda floats. IF the engine was really low miles then might could consider reusing the springs, but I know with a lot of engines(even performance ones) even the slightest of cam upgrades require stiffer valve springs.
After thinking about it, it's probably a nitride coating that I've seen being offered by some others before. Helps with reducing wear and friction, all that jazz.
FINALLY! pictures of the floor mats!
...aaaaaaannnnnndddddd..... valve springs have been ordered. Should be here Monday or Tuesday if it's anything like the cams as far as shipping goes.
started looking at adjustable cam gears as well to pair up with the cams per this thread over at https://www.supraforums.com/forum/showthread.php?669910-Degreeing-Cams-GSC-S1-With-Pictures!&highlight=shimless+bucket+part+number. I always thought adjustable cam gears were a gimmick, but I guess having the right parts to work with them actually bring out the benefits of them. From reading the first page of the thread, looks like pairing them up and degreeing them properly gives you the full benefits of the higher lift cams, but you don't get that lope you typically get with a bigger cam, so you get a smooth, stock-like idle.
Do I send it and get the adjustable cam gears and shimless buckets, too? Buckets would require a bit of extra work to sit there and measure all 16 buckets, but the 2J guys have recorded a savings of about 12 ounces in weight when changing to shimless buckets, so I'd assume I'd save about 9 ounces of weight or so going shimless. In theory, that should allow me to rev a little faster and bump up redline a little further up as well.... I think... Seems like a reasonable exchange...
Sweet jebus! after asking a few shops, found one willing to fondle MegaSquirt's balls with some dyno time, so that's one less thing for me to worry about when this build is done and glued together.
what's a budget?? lol
you knew exactly what you were doing when you bought your poopra AND this celi. lol
besides you's a baller anyways. let's hurry up and get this thing driving again.
LOL yup. since the trans is off for the clutch, might as well put LSD in there. since all engine bits are new, better powdercoat everything so it lasts. all that power needs to get to the ground so new wheels and tires and brakes. gotta be safe, so racing seat, harness and roll cage.
just helping you along there.
You can’t let me out-stop you either. You need Wilwoods and ST205 rear brakes.
Cheela is right, you'll need a LSD to put down all this new found power properly. Spinning isn't winning.
FUUUUUUU......ARRRGGHHHH.....
lol. I thought about powdercoating the valve cover and maybe the heat shield to match the purple of the TiAL BOV. I'm probably gonna spray the intake manifold with wrinkle black paint. Gonna repaint the engine bay as much as i can with the motor out. Probably rattle can that sumbitch and then clear coat it.
New wheels are on the list since I'm not a huge fan of the current tC wheels + spacers. I think one of the wheels has a leak somewhere, too, cuz it's dead flat and I've checked it for punctures.
Car is probably gonna get coilovers....or bags.... Haven't decided yet.
I sold the Recaros I had.
Also updating all of the audio stuff, too.
There's a lot of crap I wanna change out/upgrade/repair/replace.
Slight little detour, but I'm super excited to have these valve covers painted.
debating now if I wanna get the spark plug hydrodipped or get a carbon fiber replacement. I'm leaning towards the carbon fiber option though.
2JZ swap? I'm feeling it.
So progress was made over the weekend.
Headed down to my buddy's shop right after work to get started on pulling the motor out. We limited ourselves to 2 hours to get whatever we could get done since we had a meet to attend to that night. During our rummage and removal, we saw a bunch of random **** that didn't make sense or just looked appalling.
Few things to note were:
-Cam cover held on with 1 zip tie. (eh?)
-alternator ground grounded at the fender underneath the balljoint for the hood strut. (wat?)
-Intercooler core chilling on a rusted plate and held in place with just in the pipes. (wert?)
-front motor mount was bolted to the crossmember (cradle?) thing, but not to the engine. (wut?)
-the ****-asaurus rex of a wiring ****-fest at the ECU along with the gobs of tees for the vacuum lines. (nani dafuq?)
-slew of wires running about the engine bay, both in use and not in use. (h'wat?)
A lot of this will be taken care of in the next coming months. I have some good, OCD people working with me. It's gonna be a fun couple of months as Sundays and possibly Friday evenings are about the only times I'll have available to work on this and possibly Turkey week.
The journey shall continue after I get back from Sema.
For me the wiring is the most disturbing, makes me want to rip it all out and just start over.
yeah the wiring is gonna be not fun. the rest should be simple fixes but just annoying.
Lots of NANI going on there. I guess I'll gladly take my issues instead of those, just a water pump YA KNOW...
*56K WARNING* Pictures are gonna be huge for whatever reason.
Oh, hey, look! Pretty adjustable cam gears!
Had some time after work yesterday to do a bit more work on the motor.
Didn't really take a whole lot of photos due to having a short window to work on the motor, so I took pics of the interesting stuff I came across while pulling the harness off and to get the transmission separated.
Item #1: A switch wired into the harness that's apparently used to put the car into diagnostic mode when on the factory ECU. (Why?)
Item #B: What the Flying Dutchman is this?! This **** is straight up unacceptable regardless of the reason. I don't even wanna know why it's all over the IACV. Inlet gasket is $10 and throttle body gasket is $6. peep the non-OEM 13mm bolt. I'll be ordering a 2.5" throttle body inlet from KO Racing later to replace this one and either retap it for the meth injection or find another place to plumb it.
After all that mess, finally got the harness off along with a bunch of vacuum lines.
Once cleared, I proceeded with unbolting the transmission. Got to the starter and noticed something kind of odd....
Starter lost an ear, so I guess I'm ordering a new one after Turkey Day.
Got the transmission off and set it next to the motor on one of those wooden dolly cart things. Went ahead and pulled the spark plug boots out for the sake of curiosity. Cylinders 1, 2, and 3 are absolutely filled with oil while cylinder 4 was dry. O-rings and essentially the valve cover gasket itself are done.
If time permits tomorrow, I need to go pick up an engine stand from Harbor Freight so I can set this sumbitch on it and get crackin' on whatever odd things I find. There's gonna be a lot of rust that needs to be cleaned off and probably gonna order a bunch of OEM replacement bolts while I'm at it. Already have 5 or 6 on my list that needs to be replaced due to rust or they're bolts from the local hardware store.
Maybe they were always losing paper clips so wired in a switch instead?
$3 of silicone>$16 of gaskets, clearly.
If the starter is still good otherwise you could epoxy the ear back on with metal epoxy, or if you're a welding savant just fix it that way. Hard to tell but it looks like you could reinforce the topside with a washer if you were to epoxy it. Or if you're rich just buy a new one, either way.
I keep a paperclip in the ashtray in the Supra and my last Celica at all times for that reason.
Yeah, still not a good enough reason for half ass work. Maybe on a POS Honda or something, but not for this. But then again, seeing the other mess I've seen through the car, I shouldn't be that surprised. I thought I did sloppy work, but naaawwwwwwwww.
The starter's a wear part with the potential to eventually go out. I might as well replace it while it's out. I thought they were gonna be balls expensive, but the Denso unit is $100 from Rock Auto.
I did the same, lol.
You know how it is, people want to spend as little as possible for as much as possible. In fairness I reused the throttle body and upper intake manifold gaskets when I replaced the injector o-ring seals, but they're metal and I didn't have the $30 or so to spare at the time. Plus it was a 7A, those only deserve the most basic of maintenance.
Ahhh ok, that's not bad at all then. I was figuring $250 or so overnight from Japan and all that.
INGENIOUS, now you can just clap your hands for diagnostic codes!
I was looking at those when I was at Harbor Freight picking up another engine stand. Would fit well.
Some small progress today.
Picked up an engine stand since all the ones at my friend's shop are currently occupied with some sort of engine on it. Forgot to grab my free item, but I did use the 20% off coupon for it.
Had the stand all assembled and my friend was like, "Did you get the bolts to mount the engine to the stand?"
So I ran to Lowe's to grab said bolts....
Got back and we were ready to get the engine on the stand... until we realized that the hoist was buried somewhere in the back of his shop and we didn't feel like digging it out, so we did the next best thing. My friend's '89 4Runner was occupying the hoist and it was sitting right behind where I was working, so why not?
And it's up in the air!
...only for us to have to fight one dumb ass flywheel bolt that refused to let go so we can mate the hentai arms to the engine.
No pictures of the fight, but we did manage to get it off along with the flywheel and got the stand mounted to the engine.
Engine is caked in oil from top to bottom, so cleaned the mating surfaces on the head and taped off the openings along with the fuel lines and oil feed/return for the turbo in preparation for pressure washing.
After that, wrapped it up for the night, but before I did that, I pulled the the spark plug wire boot things to check my oil level.
Hopefully by Friday, I'll have the oil pan off and the front of the engine stripped down.
drop that engine at the recyclers, and swap a v6
Don't tempt me. There's a 2GRFE and a few 1MZ-FEs sitting in an LKQ not far from me.
Too far vested now to change.
NEVAR TOO FAR!!
....yeah... you're probably right......
*shops for a 2GR-FE Supercharger*

DONE!
Actually could probably do a LS4 since it's transversely mounted...
torque-steer like a sumbitch.
Just throw in a LSD and make the CV axles as equal as possible, should mitigate most of it. First V8 swapped 6th gen, could be special.
This thread got boring. Mods, close///
So in lieu of getting laid off from work today, I figured I'd get some things taken care of that I've been meaning to get done. Ironically enough, I was going to request a day off to do all of this, but they went ahead and made it permanent for me.
First thing's first. I had the Supra's front bumper repainted a couple of weeks ago due to the paint flaking off for whatever the dumb reason was and hadn't installed it back onto the car until I got the bumper wrapped in clear bra, so here it is:
It's getting wrapped in a new product called Premium Shield. Works the same as Xpel with the same warranty.
While the bumper was getting wrapped, I sat around in this thing that was in the process of getting a full car wrap and ceramic coating
I'll be back to do this type of work again on Monday. I kind of miss it and beats sitting at a desk all day. Bumper will be ready for pick-up Monday once it's all dried and cured.
After that, it was time for a drive across town to get some more work done on the Celica.
Dragged the motor outside to remove the oil pump and water pump in order to remove the oil pan and boy was I in for a surprise.
God damnit....What the hell is this? Metal shavings, red RTV, some other weird clump. What was supposed to be a simple refresh turned into a full teardown and inspection, so here we go.
Valve cover off and it's looking pretty good in there.
Cam caps and cams are off. Nothing surprising.
Head is off and this looks weird....
Time to flip it over and get to the good stuff.
Unfortunately, I didn't take a pic of the rotating assembly as it started to get late into the evening and I was ready to go home once I got everything out, but upon a quick inspection, the main bearings looked to be in good condition as well as the thrust washers. Rod bearings were a little rough, but not too bad. Probably will be replacing those. Surfaces on the crank looked to be pretty good.
Nekkid block.
Tomorrow, I'm heading back south to the shop after I hit the junk yard to do some more work on the motor. Goal for tomorrow is to double-check the bearings and mating surfaces, give the block and oil pick-up a very thorough cleaning, and hopefully tackle the valve stem seals or the S51 5th gear. In the mean time, I'll need to order a new headgasket, ARP head studs, thrust washers, and possibly new bearings.
Thank you for joining my Ted Talk.
Quick update as of recent:
OEM S54 5th gear.
Selector arm removed.
Synchros off courtesy of a steering wheel puller.
S54 driven gear is out. You can see it on the floor to the left. Used a couple of pry bars to get it out. Super tight fit.
5th gear out exposing the pesky needle bearings.
S51 5th gear and driven gear in along with synchros.
Everything else buttoned right up. Tolerances were tight. To help ease installation of the driven gear and the synchros, you can boil them in hot water for a bit to get them to expand before slipping them on. In my case, I took a socket and a hammer to the driven gear. Getting the 5th gear and the synchros on required a second person to prop the gear against the synchros as they were hammered down to prevent the synchros from coming apart because when they do, it's a pain in the ass.
Sent the bare block, head, crank, and flywheel off to the machine shop for some clean, polishing, and resurfacing respectively.
Now, it's time to tackle the valve train.
GSC ALL THE THINGS!!
Valve stem seals, valve springs, and titanium retainers. Probably gonna dream a bit, but would be nice to see if i can hit an 8000 RPM redline.
The tools required to do the valve stem seals.
Titanium retainer up top with the OEM retainer underneath.
OEM valve keepers.
OEM valve spring to the left of the GSC valve spring.
Old, worn OEM valve stem seal on top and GSC on bottom.
1 down. 15 more to go.
And we are done!
Went to the junk yard a couple of weeks ago to grab some shimless buckets out of a couple of Corollas and a Yaris giving me 48 in total. Going to another yard on Friday to see if I can snag some more so I have enough to use in the Supra as well. Ordered a Cometic headgasket along with ARP head studs as well, so they're waiting to go in.
Ordered some King Racing rod and main bearings today along with some Total Seal piston rings. Bearings should be here right after Christmas so I can at least have the crank sitting back in the block so I can go ahead and install the oil pump with the front main seal along with the rear main seal. Will be honing the cylinders as well so everything's pretty.
Now I just gotta figure out what the part numbers are for some of these damn coolant hoses running around the motor and hopefully I can remember where all of the other parts go as I'm reassembling things. I'm gon' die...
So ummm..... This happened:
This will decimate some after you put about fifteen grand in it. If we have to, overnight parts from Dallas.
I'm starting to hate Photobucket again.
Anywho, since the last episode of Dragonball Z, I've had to do a bit more work to the block. I found out where the metal bits that were on the oil pick-up came from.
Piston #3 essentially ate itself and took a ring land with it which resulted in this:
It marked up cylinder 3 pretty good, so it had to be bored out.
Also, the piston ring #2 for piston #4 decided it wanted to be a permanent marking of the piston:
That ended up being a major bummer, so I went ahead and used that time to clear off all of that janky ass blue RTV silicone that was all over the throttle body and inlet body. Buddy of mine had a bench grinder with a wire wheel on it, so off I went.
Oh, heeeyyy... Would ya look at that... There's an OEM gasket hiding under all of that mess. Might spray a coat of gasket maker on it and reuse it since it's a metal gasket and not a paper/plastic one.
Also started to clean off the intake manifold, and TVIS manifold, and just about everything else that was caked in grease.
Don't really have a lot of Before & After pics of this process, but basically imagine everything being black and greasy to clean and looking like aluminum again.
Ordered bigger Wiseco 9.0:1 compression pistons in the 86.5mm form along with some ARP rod bolts and off everything went to the machine shop.
Block received a good cleaning and had the surface decked along with getting the freeze plugs replaced with some new brass ones.
The head was dropped off to be decked as well and also cleaned.
Now I'm just waiting to hear back from Justin at PrimeDriven in regards to getting the correct Cometic headgasket that I need so I can glue the head down to the block. I'll be back at the shop on Tuesday to assemble what I can of the short block in the mean time.
All of that is entirely too clean to be reassembled and put back in the car. So the plan is to put the harness back on, run it for a bit, then clean the harness up later?
some more progress. nothing too major I suppose.
2mm Cometic headgasket in with ARP head studs.
Head torqued down per ARP's specs. New oil pump, water pump, ATS adjustable cam gears, and Gates Racing timing belt installed with a new tensioner pulley and tensioner.
Mounted up the turbo for ****s and giggles.
Valve cover got sent off today for powder coating to match the TiAL BOV. If funds allow, I may have the manifold heat shield and the turbo compressor housing coated to match. Will depend on how everything else painted flat black will go. Pretty boring, but I'm ok with it.
I also need to order a new downpipe as the current/old one has some pretty nice cracks going on and I think, by the looks of it, it's going to prevent the wastegate from fully opening anyways.
It's supposed to rain pretty gnarly the next couple of days, but hopefully it'll clear up by Thursday so I can head back to the shop and continue painting and sorting out other parts.
Are you going to send out the manifold for coating to match the turbo?
I have an extra 3s downpipe I want to get rid of. Brand new from gt4play:
https://gt4-play.co.uk/shop/high-flow-3-down-pipe
PM me if you're interested
lolol I've got another kid on the way.... There's no money for anything....
Another one?!?
Picked up a Berk 3" downpipe from PrimeDriven with some store credit I had. I found it odd that I needed to grind down a bit of the flange so that my wastegate flap thingy would clear to open and close properly, but it's not really a big deal.
Valve cover powder coated and I grabbed a couple of cans of matte black bbq grill paint and started painting a bunch of stuff (intake & exhaust manifold, throttle body, heat shields, timing covers, misc brackets, etc). Painted the "Yamaha" and the timing marks on the cover with some white-out. Ordered a bunch more bolts from Toyota to replaced the rusted ones along with a new idler pulley for the alternator/AC compressor as that one was rusted and bearing was going out.
Can someone confirm if the 2 water lines circled in red are connected? Is blue the water feed for the turbo?
Are the red and yellow for the heater core and where does the green one go off to?
not sure what else has been sorted out since my last post, but from what I can remember, I broke some more **** (water line for the IACV. gonna bypass that), installed the OEM 2JZGTE 550cc injectors, and got the wiring harness mounted and plugged in (for the most part). Nothing all that great I suppose, but it's better than nothing. The motor is about 90% assembled and just about ready to go back into the car, but before that....
It's time to sort out the mess in the engine bay. There's a lot of random wires and misc. crap running through the bay and through odd orifices and the bay's paint could really use some refreshening, so I figured now would be the time to do it.
While I was cleaning up, I took a gander over at the AC condenser and would ya look at that? Would ya just look at it?!
It's kinda hard to tell, but the condenser has a bowling affect to it. Looks like something hit it pretty good from the front and pressed it in, so I ordered a new condenser....and compressor....and drier....and expansion valve... sheesh...
Took the pressure washer to the bay and went to town after I did a quick scuff of 320 grit to the bay...and then someone left me unsupervised...
I think my pressure washer calligraphy skills are getting a little better. lol
After a few hours, finally got a good majority of the things I needed cleaned and taped up. This is gonna be a pretty quick and dirty paint job since it's a black car. Also cleaned up and pressure washed the front crossmember as well.
Called it a day there and decided that I wanted to take the rear spoiler off to repaint as well since the clear coat has seen better days. The rear hatch has seen better days as well with a rust patch by the Toyota emblem and some dings by the front post of the spoiler wing thing.
Doesn't look too bad wingless, I suppose, but I eventually plan to run a TRD wing on it.
Was starting to run out of daylight and I don't have access to the shop since my friend's out of the country for vacation, so I took the wing home and started work on it.
Started to knock off the clear coat using some 150 grit sand paper and progressively worked my way up to 400 grit. It was probably unnecessary to go that high, but figured it wouldn't hurt to do so. Minus the still-visible paint, the wing is pretty smooth.
Found a couple of small spots on the rear wing that's gonna need some body filler, so I'll be doing that sometime this weekend when it rains. It's been raining off and on these last few days and is supposed to be continuing to do so for the next couple of weeks, but there looks to be a pocket of sun shine this weekend that I want to try to take advantage of to prep the rear hatch for paint work.
The reason I'm doing more paint work than I probably should is because I bought some SprayMax 2K filler primer and 2K clear coat. They're pretty expensive at about $20/can, so I wanted to maximize the usage out of each can. Hopefully I have the patience to not make it look like ass. We'll find out on the next episode of Dragonball Z!
I loathe bodywork..... I just don't have the patience for it.
I can't decide what's worse, bodywork or interior.
Just replacing pieces on either isn't too bad, but extensive body work or interior work... Hmmmm.... At least interior work is cleaner, so there's that I guess.
So umm....yeah...
Not sure how I'll be tackling this one. Maybe a sledge hammer or something. The rust actually crept down towards the lip edge of the hatch, so it's pretty nasty, but I spray some rust coating thing over it in the mean time to hold it over til then. I won't be keeping this hatch around for long.
Other than that, got the rear hatch sanded down up to about 320 grit. It'll do for now.
And then before the storm came a-rumblin' through, I got the bay primered.
I said "fck it" and did one thicc a$$ coat before the storm. Gonna hit it with another light coat later when I get around to wrapping up the rear hatch. In the mean time, I'm gonna finish primer coating the front crossmember in my back yard since I'm home now and the storm has passed...for now...
Just fill any rust holes with Bondo like most anyone else.
So we had a break in the weather today. It was forecast to rain today, but I guess Mother Nature decided to offer a break and gave us a rain-free, sunny afternoon. I took this opportunity to pack up my **** and drive the 43 miles across town to get working on the car.
I didn't really take a whole lot of pictures of the progress, but I managed to plug up the rust holes in the reat hatch with some bondo. Tried to do it for the holes from the old 3-post spoilers, but I don't think it'll hold up that well. Coated whatever exposed rust with that rust preventative paint or whatever it's called.
Still has a couple of divets, but that'll be packed in with primer to make it flush-ish. Also filled in the holes for the rear Toyota badge as well. I'm not even gonna bother with that dent on the hatch lid. lol
After some drying time with the rust coating, it was time to primer.
Got fancy with some of that SprayMax 2K primer. Same primer I used in the engine bay. It's a good primer, but doesn't like to be sprayed in a position other than vertical, so it's made it kind of a chore doing the horizontal surface of the hatch. I managed to get a light, first coat on the hatch along with a light coat and a few touch-ups in the engine bay, and rear spoiler. When it came to the second, heavy coat, it started to lose its efficiency and I ran out about halfway. I'm gonna pick up another can tomorrow and possibly a can of Rustoleam primer as well just in case.
You can kinda see where the can started to run out of breath, so I left it at that. Hopefully weather will hold out some more later this week and let me finish this job.
Also, if anyone is looking to delete their rear wipe arm, the MK4 Supra butt plug fits.
Some spots still look like dog ass, but it's still way better than it was before and that was the goal. Now to glue everything back together.
Glue? Supposed to use cable ties ala Honda style.
Cable ties is amateur league. We're in JV now.
Let's see.......
I started cleaning up the wiring mess that was left behind the pillar pod and driver's foot well area.
I also plucked out the old Viper alarm that was in the car along with the Blitz turbo timer as well. I got rid of those pedal covers cuz my shoe laces kept getting caught on the screws that help them stay in place.
This was basically everything I pulled from the driver's area.
Passenger side was pretty neat.
Yikes.
Took that little bit of the body harness home to organize a bit. Was told a lot of that can be removed, so I will be doing that this weekend. Hopefully I don't phuc anything up.
I placed an order for new poly engine mounts from Lou over at BRD in the UK. They got sent out today, so hopefully they'll be here mid-week next week so I can drop the motor in by week's end.
In the mean time, it was time to take care of AC stuff.
Replacing the condenser because, you know...
yeah.....I've no idea how something like that can happen.
Replaced the compressor as well. Old one looked like poo and I'd rather be ready for this south Texas heat. By now, I had ran out of day light and I was getting pretty hungry, so called it a day for now. Heading back tomorrow to finish replacing the AC dryer and the o-rings for the ends going to the fire wall. I might have a leak somewhere because when I had the system discharged before starting this, there was barely any freon left in the system. Should be buttoning up the driver's side area as well since I was needing a butt connector that I forgot to bring with me.
I'm getting pretty close to getting this thing together. For a while, I was losing motivation to keep working on the car and feeling indifferent about it. I was at this same point with the Supra as well years ago when the motor wasn't in the car. Even as I'm getting closer to the finish line, I still feel indifferent about it and whether or not I want to keep the car after all is said and done. Maybe cuz it's been me working on the car solo 95% of the time and it feels kinda meh. I guess time will tell though.
I think you'll feel better about it once it's up and running again, it's normal to feel disdain towards things that aren't working and are taking forever to put right. I know exactly what that's like...
+1 on what Box said.
Plus, working by yourself sucks donkey balls. At least having someone who is hanging out is better than being completely alone.
I'm beginning to enjoy having Theo in the garge with me... something about a two year old playing around the garage shouting "ugga dugga time!" helps.
The random hugs don't hurt either.
I feel the same. Haven't touched mine in a long while because of wedding season but part of me thinks it's just an excuse to not get in there. Working alone sucks especially when you hit a wall. Mine is so close too but I'm losing motivation as well. But I do want to drive it again so it'll have to get done.
Thanks, guys.
I forgot to mention that this is my drive to go work on my car and this is on a GOOD day. So this, plus this Texas heat makes me not want to do anything else, but i'm making progress.
Not much other update today.
Got the AC dryer replaced along with the o-rings at the firewall, so now the engine bay is practically ready.
Driver's side interior is sorted out now and looks a lot less cluttered. I need to find some kind of a carpet dye or something so I can dye the floor mats black. I'll sort out that random wire later. I also have most of that ECU/body harness sorted out and now just have to mock everything up to see how much of the wiring I need to shorten for a cleaner finish.
I guess during the down time waiting for the motor mount bushings to come in, I'll sort out whatever is happening in the back half of the car, so I'll hopefully get to that next week if it doesn't rain.
So I didn't get to drop in the motor last week like I had hoped, but I still was able to make some progress anyways.
Last week, I moved the AC compressor to the block from AC lines and also mounted the power steering pump the block as well. Got the belts ran and tightened as well.
The motor mount bushings from BRD came in last week as well, so I went ahead and used this weekend to install them into the motor mounts at home. I left the instructions at the shop, so I yolo-ed this 5hit. I made a boo-boo with the front motor mount, but it wasn't anything that couldn't be fixed.
Took a reciprocating saw to the bushings to make quick work of it all then torched the remaining rubber bushings on the mounts to dry them up in order to scrape them off.
Luckily, I had a vice on hand, so it made pressing the bushings in a lot easier.
And uh..... That's about it for now.... More later this week I hope.
Kill them with fire!
I honestly kinda didn't think I'd get this far, but uh....yeah...
The olde 4Runner wasn't available to be used as a hoist, so we used the lift itself.
(Spec I think) flywheel bolted on with ARP flywheel bolts torqued down to 95Ft-Lb per ARP's specs.
Southbend Stage 2 Endurance hybrid clutch glued onto the flywheel.
S54, starter, and crossmember duct taped to the motor. I also slipped on another firewall grommet to the harness since there is a hole cut out in the firewall by where the stock ECU sits and that's where the harness is running through instead of the factory spot. Peep the little moped. Don't mind the broken Supras in the back though.
And to end the night, we pushed the car into the shop to get ready to bubble gum the motor into the car tomorrow morning. Hopefully all goes well.
interesting build thread (just read it from start to finish) that is some amount of work you have put into it,engine looks cool as feck.what turbo you running on there (looks like a hybrid) any plans on running an external wastegate for a more even boost.i have a Greddy oled controller and their really great to use.
good luck with it
Looks like you have a few hours of work left!
Can't wait to hear it run!
That scooter though.
Wooo, it's a car again!
Come do mine! I have no time.
Yay! I still have a chance to win then! lol
Ugh wiring is the worst, especially when previous owners screw it up. Don't blame you.
So, while waiting for the harnesses I ordered to show up, I got bored and decided to go ahead and swap out the regular ole door panels for the 8-speaker premium panels. I also slapped in the 4" mid-speakers in just as a place holder in the mean time and to clear up some shelf space in my garage at home.
It was nice of the eBay seller to include new upper moldings for the door panels as the driver's one is rekt. Driver's arm rest is going to need some repairs as it looks like it's caved in a bit. Should be an easy fix though.
Plan is to eventually run Focal 3-way component speakers up front with 6.5" woofers out back powered by a NVX 4-channel mini amp and I'll be keeping the powered 8" sub that came with the car for some low-end boom-boom.
I also yanked out the old Alpine head unit from the car as well. It's a CDA-9851 with the MPOW bluetooth add-on. It's up for grabs if anyone wants it for their '90s sh1t boxes or looking to replace a broken radio on the cheap.
Also drained and pulled the water/meth injection system from the car. That's up for grabs as well if anyone is interested.
In the mean time, everything else is going to be a bit slow until my buddy whose shop I am using is done moving and relocating his shop since I am helping him with that whenever I have some free time from work.
Next update should hopefully be something decent and productive.
Gimme the deets on the meth injection setup.
Those are some premium looking doors indeed.
mmmmmmmm....... 8 speaker setup......
I just realized the lower speaker grill is a different design between the 6-speaker and the 8-speaker.
Yup. Plastic grate vs metal grill. I was thinking about converting mine to 8 speaker. I think I can find everything but the driver side 4" cover.
Quick update before the site goes down again:
Got another 5SFE and ST185 3SGTE harness in and sent them off to Doug at WireGap a couple of weeks ago. Waiting on his e-mail to let me know when he's going to start the merge so I can tell him to shut up and take my money.
Found out that the wheels I wanted are being discontinued in the colour I want, so I went ahead and placed an order for those before it's too late. Hopefully they'll be here in January.
I finally started a new, stable job last week, so my year of being funemployed has come to an end. That now means moar moniez for car parts, but less time to work on my car. Hopefully by Black Friday, I'll have enough saved up for my standalone and the rest of my fuel system.
List of last remaining major-ish parts (I think):
-Link G4 Plug-and-play ECU
-BTI CAN gauge. (Need to double check with Brandon to see if he's still offering them for the Link standalones since they're listed on his site, but can't be purchased.)
-4 Bar map sensor
-FID1000cc injectors (unless they've updated and replaced these with bigger ones). Should be good for about 480hp on corn juice according to my tuner.
-Walbro 450 E85 fuel pump
-RacerX fuel rail
-ATS Racing cold start injector block-off plate
The car is so close to getting done that I can taste it, but at the same time, it feels so far away. Hopefully I can get it running by the 2-year-anniversary-of-ownership mark.
Congrats on the new job!
Got the oil feed and return lines made. I kinda ****ed up the finish on the fittings when I made them, but eh. They'll hardly be visible once installed, so won't bother me. I'll eventually need to make lines for my catch can as well.
Hopefully on Friday, I'll be able to get around to putting these on the car and getting the downpipe and one of the AC lines wrapped along with pulling my old harness off. Work schedule has been kind of unpredictable so far with when my shift ends, so we'll see how things go.
Small progress is some progress.
I've decided it's futile to try and make a car 100% perfect, unless you get it to that point then hermetically seal it. If it works and doesn't look sketchy that's all you can really ask for.
Fuel rail came in today AND they included some Big League gum with it. I haven't had this gum since I was a kid. Harness also came in right after the rail got dropped off. Pay day is Friday, so I should be ordering my injectors and pump. Decided to go for FID (Fuel Injector Development) 1000cc since they're a bit cheaper compared to the Injector Dynamic counterpart by about $175, so that difference will go towards the cost of the fuel pump.
My work schedule has been pretty "nice" lately, so it should allow me some time to work on my car when I'm done with my shift. We're getting cloooossseeeee...
Wooo parts and gum!
Was just thinking, reminds me of ordering stuff from Sweetwater since they always put candies in with your order. It's the small touches.
So not a whole lot has happened since the last update. I've been ordering a bunch of small fittings here and there to finalize my fuel plumbing route. I also ordered an AEM X-line wideband per my tuner's recommendation along with my FID1000cc injectors only to realize that I was sent 11MM injectors instead of 14MM, so I'm waiting on the 14MM top hats to arrive.
Still need to order my standalone and my CAN gauge, but I'm getting there slowly, but surely. Hopefully next week I can place an order for those.
My fuel pump arrived yesterday, so today, I managed to sneak in some time to at least swap out the pump.
It was kind of a hassle due to that plastic bucket thing that surrounds the pump since the Walbro pump is bigger than the OEM pump. At least that's sorted and out of the way.
I also found out that the oil return line that I made was a wee bit too long, so I'll need to find some time this weekend to shorten it down a bit.
Hopefully next week I can have the old harness pulled off so I can run the new one.
Got some more spare time today after work to do more fuel work on the Celica.
Pulled the factory fuel rail out along with the cold start injector.
The only thing that was a pain in the ass about this was sitting the injector seats into the head, so to make life a hair bit easier, I pulled the harness and the valve cover out of the way.
ATS Racing makes a plate that replaces the cold-start injector in favor of an IAT sensor, so that make life a little convenient.
Also pulled the old harness off to drop in the new harness I got from Doug. You can see how much cleaner it is compared to the old one on the left. There's a couple of things I still need to change on the harness, but it's pretty much ready. I'll need to shorten the length on the MAF plug, extend one of the transmission plugs, re-pin the alternator to the newer oval style, and then there's a plastic cover over part of the harness by the transmission that I'm not sure how it's mounted, so I may just go ahead and pull it off and figure out what I'm going to do with it.
Got most of it buttoned on. I'll have to come back later with some zip ties to clean up the wiring by the injectors and wire in the IAT sensor.
Also decided to pull the eBay oil filter relocation thing out for the time being and just plug the spot with a temp Fram filter to prevent water from going into the motor when it rains.
Still have a lot more crap to do, but finding time during the week is tough. I ordered my standalone the other day and it's currently getting a base map installed. I'm told it'll be shipped out from ATS on Monday once Scott is done setting that up. I ordered my BTI CAN gauge this morning as soon as my paycheck dropped in. lol Should be here in a couple of weeks as he's about a week behind on orders.
For those who don't know what the BTI CAN gauge is, you can find more info http://www.btigauges.com/.
Would've been nice if he was able to get a 3.5" display for the Link, but I can live with the 52mm gauge.
I think that about sums it up for the day...
Not much has happened since the last update.
Standalone came in...
and then went straight back out for some additions.
Realized that I didn't have any additional inputs to run on the factory harness to add a fuel pressure, oil pressure, and a flex fuel sensor, so I sent the ECU back along with the auxiliary harness that I bought back to ATS Racing so Scott can work is magic and make me a harness that'll include all of those along with the AEM Wideband since I won't be using the factory narrowband on this car. Wiring loom looks gorgeous and I can't wait to get it into the car.
Did a few other things while the ECU was being worked on:
Swapped out and shortened the connector for the IAT that has replaced the cold start injector. Hope I didn't **** it up and wired the IAT to the wrong pins. lol
I didn't take a picture of it, but I did swap out the map sensor connector for the Delphi ones so I can use my AEM 5 bar sensor. If anyone needs an OEM 3SGTE map sensor, let me know. I think I have a spare one.
Also swapped out and shorted the alternator plug from the old circle connector to the oval one.
I crudely wrapped the downpipe in some DEI titanium wrap. Hopefully it does the job and doesn't burn the AC rubber line it's leaning up against. lol
I bought a carbon fiber intake tube from MR2Heaven hoping that it'll work, but no dice, so I sent it back and will need to fabricate my own.
BTI CAN gauge also came in and I got that mounted into the DCW triple gauge pod. Will get pics of that later.
I think that about sums it up so far. I just need to get water and power steering rubber lines now, figure out what I'm going to do about the AC fan, and mount my fuel pressure regulator, flex fuel sensor, and boost solenoid, but other than that, that should about do it before I clock the turbo compressor housing and start to fab together intercooler piping. I'll probably need to take a day off from work to really focus on that rather than find pockets of time on the weekend to work on the car.
Sweet......
So, you think it'll be running by spring?
hopefully. At least a first crank or something by spring just to know that it's not all jacked up.
I'm probably gonna take the 28th off from work to dedicate a whole day to it.
It's amazing what a single day can yield.
I'm convinced that it's the only real reason my junk is back together.
indeed. I just to keep an eye on the weather and see how it goes, cuz my car sits outside and that's where I work on it.
Yeah, I use to live out in Humble, TX for a while. Good times, nice weather.
Terrible drainage in the area though. My last car was flooded over in Montrose, but they "fixed" it (it was a 5k car) and it wasn't totalled or branded. $3200 in damage, but I opted to take 0 deductible over having the paint fixed.
They've updated the draining system the last couple of years, so places that used to flood hasn't flooded recently. It's gotten better, but some places still do flood.
We've had great boost weather the last couple of days, but sadly, I was working. :\
The goal for the car is to eventually to make it to MSR and COTA for some laps.
So umm.. yeah. This was the state of the interior as I was finally installing the ECU back into its home.
Got the ECU in and it's lookin' pretty and also wrapped up the interior. Also swapped the spots for the boost gauge and wideband because the boost gauge's body was long enough to where I could use electrical tape to wrap it to fit snug whereas the wideband was too thin and needed the bracket to hold it in place and spot 1 on the pod had room to fit.
I just need to pick up a new radio once this project is finished.
Got what i hope is all of my heater hoses sorted out. I just need to go back with some worm clamps to hold down the hoses and we should be set. Also tossed on the strut brace for ****s and giggles, but to also have a spot to mount my FPR.
Next up will be finishing up the fuel system with new lines and probably the vacuum lines.
PROGRESSSSSSS!!!!!
Bahaha
so about that lockdown......
Buddy of mine is taking it seriously, so he's not at his shop for the time being and is staying home.
In the mean time, I'm still considered an "EsSEnTIal" worker, so I decided to order some parts for the Supra in the mean time and might fill in some time gap in this thread with that update. Parts should be here by the end of the week, if not early next week while I'm out of town for work. The wheels I ordered for the Celica are in a shipping container somewhere on a boat on its way to California....or so it has been for the last month according to Vivid Racing and should be here sometime "soon". At this rate, they'll probably be here by the time the wheels I ordered for the Supra will be here. :\
So i managed to get a day off from work and do some more work on the Celica yesterday. Yesterday's focus was fuel. Mainly, the fuel lines.
I picked up some -6AN teflon lines from good ol' eBay. Didn't take a whole hell lot of pictures during the whole thing since I had a small window to work and time is of the essence.
Got to work and pulled out ye olde OEM fuel lines and started to measure and cut the new lines. Stainless lines are feed and the nylon braided is fuel return.
Here, you can kinda see where everything is routed. I need to secure the flex fuel sensor down a little bit better since I only drilled and tapped a pre-existing hole right by the shock tower. I may need to drill another hole to tap for a more secure mount. I got the FPR location idea from the ST205 guys as there's not a whole lot of play room to mount that and it seems to work. I just need to find some rubber p-clips to mount it better, but in the mean time, the zip ties does the job. lol
I did manage to measure the feed line from the tank to the filter wrong though. It's about 8" too long, so I'll need to pull it back to trim it down a bit, but other than that, the fuel system is 95% done until then. Next on the list is.....power steering line and some other stuff..........I think.......I dunno....We'll get there when we get there.
In the mean time, got my Trump Change and ordered a few parts for the Supra that came in pretty quick.
Picked up the 2 front wheels for the Supra since the guy already had them on hand. The rears should be arriving some time next month. Did a quick test fit today before the rain started a-rumblin' in.
Super glad that they cleared the LS400 brakes that I have on the car cuz I was told stock TT brakes would need spacers to clear the wheels.
I'm still waiting on the wheels that I ordered for the Celica to come in though. Not sure what's taking them so long cuz at this rate, my Supra's rear wheels will be here before the Celica wheels come in. :\
And as for what's in the Recaro box:
They fit really nicely, but I had to do some trimming work on the driver's side cuz there is a support bar underneath the seat that was too wide and would cause the Bride sliders to bind and not be able to slide forward and back. The passenger side would hit the amp I have sitting under the factory seat, so I'm having to find an option for the amps to mount the seat, but I think I have an idea of what to do.
Hmmmm the gunmetal color looks really good on the Supra. One day I'll own one too (sniff sniff)...
And then an MR2 too to have the Toyota Trio. Oh wait, my Celica needs to be the GT4 lol.
I just noticed, how dark is your Supra's tint?!?!
If i remember correctly, it's 25% all around in 3M ceramic tint. I got lucky and bought the Supra before all of the hype that caused the prices on them to sky rocket.
quick update on the ****box, moved it over to my friend's house so that I can have easier access to it on the weekends.
wrapped up all of the vacuum lines, i think, and then got the dip stick bent and installed into the block. Put worm clamps on all of the hoses that needed them. Just gotta find out how i'm going to mount the MAP sensor and the boost control solenoid thingy.
Next up is to JB weld the little hole in the power steering hard line to see if it'll hold or at least be a temp fix, and then pick up an upper radiator hose to see if it'll fit after I cut it down cuz stupid ass 2nd gen has to have an intermediate hardpipe between the head and the radiator.
Steering rack/column got some play in it, so I need to get under to see what's up and tighten **** down. While i'm there, I might as well double-check to see if the motor fully turns cuz I don't remember if I did that while the motor was still on the stand.
We're getting pretty close to the finish line now....I think....
Motor turns but no spark. Gonna look into it some more this weekend.
Dist pickup coil or ignitor, usually.
checked dizzy with multimeter and it passes per BGB. Replaced coil because it failed per BGB and bought a new one.
Still no spark. Gonna check the ECU via laptop tomorrow.
If all else fails, I'm pushing this **** into Galveston.
Did you make sure the new coil works/meets spec?
Its a Delphi unit I ordered from rock auto.
So i grabbed an in-line spark plug tester from ye olde harbor freight to test spark and when i plug it in to the wire from the ignition coil to the distrubutor, the light fires AFTER the car is done cranking and not while its cranking.
Is it something in the tune? You are on a Link right?
Yeah. I'm on a Link.
I spoke to Aaron and Scott at ATS briefly in one of the MR2 groups and they said to check a couple of settings real quick and if necessary, Scott can do a remote session to double-check that everything is good to start. So i'm gonna tackle that on Friday on my day off.
Sounds like if it's not a tune issue you might need to check some stuff out. Check for power to the coil when cranking between ground and the power wire at the coil and check for pulsing ground between B+ and the other coil wire while cranking so you can see if it's a loss on the power side of the circuit like from the ignition system or a loss on the control side of the circuit like the ignition module or whatever is running your coil now.
turns out one of the wires to the distributor got cut, so i patched it up real quick with a butt connector. Got spark now. Still won't start. sumbitch....
Is it just super flooded? Dry the plugs and cylinders with brake cleaner and compressed air and put a little oil down the cylinders and bump the starter to spread the oil. That'll bring compression back up and make it easier to start.
Anyone ever have issues with the car sending power to the ECU after pulling the EFI Main relay? Had a tough time pulling the relay out by hand and ended up shimmying it out with a couple of flatheads. Now the sumbitch don't wanna power on unless I run a jumper pin. Thinking I may've fudged the relay when I pulled it. Then I bought a relay from O'Reilly's and that's not working either, so maybe the connection in the fuse box got fudged, too. Haven't dug into it yet.
Anywho, Tried to set timing on the motor to 0 and checked that the Link standalone had timing set to 0. Still no start.
ECU isn't seeing oil or fuel pressure for whatever reason. Maybe the ECU is set default to not start when it shows 0 pressure.
Uuhhh....even after cranking the motor a billion times over, I noticed that oil isn't pouring out of the turbo feed line or where the oil pressure sensor is on the head. Not too familiar with these motors to know if that's normal. I'd assume i'd get some kind of dribble coming out of either spot.
Other than that, towed the car home since the Supra is in the shop for some transmission work giving me space in my 1-car garage. Assuming work doesn't call me for something stupid, should be able to get some more time this weekend to diddle with it.
any luck? have not followed up on here in a while, cool to see your still working on the celica. i went for a little roadtrip in mine last week before i parked it again. i've got a bunch of third gen parts here and prolly a bunch over at mikes place if ya need to swap something in to troubleshoot.
goodluck
nothing yet. i pulled the pan off to check the oil pump from where the pick-up attaches and it's dry, so I'll need to test the gear on the pump to see if it actually works. Right now, just fighting the power steering pump so i can drop it to pull the belt off so i can get the crank pulley off. I'll try to tackle it in the morning.
After a year of waiting and some heart break, my wheels finally landed stateside and should be here on Tuesday....car's still not running...
Took me a while to get to pulling the timing belt off with the engine still in the car. Kinda don't wanna do that again....
Gonna take a look at the oil pump over the weekend to see what's up and then probably burn the car down.
Wishing you luck.
So these came in today....
I was expecting this to be a shiny black finish, but it ended up being a chrome finish with a black body, so not bad for their RBC finish.
UGH.
They look so good!
17s?
No Sakura Pink no care.
I've always had a soft spot for their wheels.
It's still gonna look awesome, you can just get a giant cringey hello kitty with titties vinyl wrap instead.
Hey, sometimes I gotta stop my project, clean my area, then go back to it another day because it gets too cluttered up around the car to work efficiently and safely.
My coworker has some hentai on his car and uhh...yeah.
I have minion eyes sun shades in my daily driver, but they don't fit the right way they fit side ways so my car looks super high and stressed out when I park it. I keep a duplicate set in the Celica. I also have a penguin seat cover for the passenger side in the car that I sometimes use.
I pulled the oil pump off tonight and that hoe is bone dry. I oiled up the gear housing like the BP oil spill and turned the gear with a 1400ft-lb impact at full tilt and I can see it puking up the oil from one side to the other.
Not sure why the oil pump isn't picking up oil from the pan like a $2 hooker on Christmas day.
I left some oil in the pump to see if it'll help prime the pump to pull some kind of vacuum or something and slapped it back on the block with some duct tape. I'll dump a couple of quarts of oil into the motor later and turn the gear with a hamster wheel to see if that helps.
until then, back to Among Us cuz someone is looking a little sus over there in the electrical room....
Should you drop the oil pan and check the oil pickup screen for blockage or the pan for poor clearance to the oil pickup?
The old school trick is to prime the pump with thick assembly lube oil or just thick (20W-50) engine oil and pre-fill the filter then cross your fingers it all works right. Usually if the pump isn't sucking there's a reason, like worn pump or excessive pump clearances that's causing low suction and it'll still be a problem once it's running and hot.
WE HAVE OIL PRESSURE!!
I've no idea what the **** it was that I did, but oil is flowing again. Essentially primed the pump with oil to test how the gear is working, slapped it on the block, ugga dugga the oil pick up to the pump, slapped the oil pan on, filled with break-in oil, disconnected the turbo oil feed line, and spun the oil pump gear and it started to bleed out. Plugged that line back and then pulled off the oil pressure gauge and spun the gear again to confirm. Oil bled out of there as well as did the oil filter.
Now I just gotta put this **** all back together again. I am not looking forward to that.
Finally, someone with some good news!
SitRep: Oil pan is officially resealed and bolted back to the block. Filled the motor with some Amsoil Engine Break-in oil and tested the pump again just to ensure it wasn't a fluke when I tested it before. Currently fighting the timing belt to get it back on, but I think I've picked up a trick to get it on based on some videos i've seen.
I guess tune in tomorrow to see what happens.
Ok. got the timing belt on and now to put everything else back on....
So.... Is is running yet?
^that.
^this.
got lazy yesterday and didn't do anything except binge season 7 of Agents of SHIELD.
Today, put some time into the car and got the lower timing cover on along with the AC belt and the motor mount. Just need to tighten down the tensioner for the power steering pump and I think I can attempt to start the car again...maybe...
if it makes it any better, i started the first 6 episodes friday night and then finished the last 7 on Saturday. lol
Over Turkey Day weekend, some friends came over to help out and double check to make sure timing belt and crank was all lined up properly. Still no dice.
however, i did notice that the pins for power and ground for the oil pressure and fuel pressures sensors were flipped on their connectors. Corrected them and then started to fiddle with the analog input in the PCLink software and managed to pick up Oil Pressure on Analog 4, so making some progress.
My IAT is still reading -40C for whatever reason. Aaron is saying that's because there's a bad connection somewhere. Part of me thinks I just have the 2 wires swapped out. I'll fiddle with it some more tomorrow when I have time.
ummmm..... ahem....
Got IAT, Fuel pressure, Oil Pressure, wideband, and Flex fuel to read correctly after Scott sent me how he wired up the auxiliary harness.
car still won't crank, so I guess we'll continue to look into that... :\
No crank as in the starter isn't working?
Starter works and all that.
What's a good website to host videos that this forum will accept?
Youtube?
I saw your video Alex.
If the ECU is firing the plugs right, then your only real remaining avenue is fuel. Your wideband was showing 14-16, wasn't it?
Will is start on starting fluid?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PAXe0FeqFe8
Here's a video of it coughing.
I just set the timing to 0 via the standalone and confirmed with the timing light and still not getting anywhere.
Have you done a compression test?
14.8 is a little lean for cold start, usually you'd want something richer like 12ish. If someone sprays a little starting fluid into the intake while cranking will it catch and go for a few beats? Are the spark plugs getting wet with fuel? If you try cranking with throttle partially open will it go?
Uhh....car is still on jack stands. Not much progress. Gonna move it to my dad's for storage for the time being so I can move the Supra back into my garage.
Speaking of Supra, spent the last 4 months getting it together with the standalone, cams, fuel, etc. Made 647whp & 527wtq @ 25.5 PSI on E80 and 459whp & 447wtq @ 16 PSI on 93 pump gas. Been fun driving the car for a few days before I got deported to Oklahoma for work for the last 2 weeks. Still got a couple of things left to tweak on it per my tuner, but should be solid now.
I think this thing may be going up for sale soon....
After about 2 years, moved the car from my dad's place to a friend's shop so we can start working on it again. Hopefully it runs again by year's end....maybe....
