After a long time of deliberation, and help from fellow members with my questions (thank you to all btw) i finally took action. I was told my engine would be here somewhere between 10:30am and 5:30pm and i waited all day for it to arrive. At 5:31, i had the biggest smile on my face. This is why:
A 3rd Generation ST205 3SGTE w/ about 63k miles. Completely stock other then an HKS green mushroom intake.
The Patient: 1994 Toyota Celica GT w/ sick nasty jdm power folding red mirrors (work and wired like stock)
and a little something special i've been waiting to use for about 2 years compliments of DCWs and DewHoeGT for parting with them:
Thank you for looking, more pictures and progress will be up tomorrow.
-Americo

Damn East Coast balling out of control.
GOOD UPS MAN!!!!BALLER!!!!! its a joy to to just own one man!!
sweet now i need to get my mine rolling...lol
where did you order the 3rd gen from?
BELOW:
Not too much of an update, just various pics of parts off the engine. I should have the head off this weekend (and in the shop by Monday), I cant get the exhaust manifold/tranny off until i can lift the engine up a little. Minor progress pics below:
Heat shield, intercooler and timing belt cover off:
Complete harness off:
Intake manifold off:
Valve Cover:
Misc. Parts:
This week I also got my clutch in the mail. I decided to go with a SPEC Stage 3+ sprung full faced clutch. Even though I read a lot of bad with SPEC and the springs exploding..etc (all over mr2oc) I have a few friends running it with no problems. Plus, a lot of the exploding springs were on the 6 puck from what i could tell-too much free motion i suppose in the tranny. Also anyone looking to buy from SPEC directly, deal with Jeremy. He was nothing but help and was well aware of the combination we need for the 5sfe transmission (3sgte pressure plate, 5sfe clutch, 5sfe throwout bearing and alignment tool).
In packaging:
Also received my Berk Technology V3 downpipe. Luckily I called the actual company to order(compared to just ordering online) and they offered to ceramic coat it for free. Wonderful customer service would recommend to anyone looking for a well constructed 3inch dp. Along with that my AEM UEGO Wideband came in same day.
Lame cell phone pic:
Okay so I have a small dilemma. I'm well aware that a lot of people on our board are running the Prosport (pro) Gauges but I also have read a lot of problems can come from them. After a short period of time they supposably stop reading as accurately and I even read that a piece broke off into someone's engine on mr2oc (they provided a vid to show how the engine sounds right before he had to tear it down). Any suggestions on other gauges? I thought about doing all AEM but I personally would rather not pay over 200 a gauge. I would like to have the phantom look feature, so autometer is out as of right now (until i change my mind). Also as far as EBCs go: Greddy Profec I is the best bet right? If not an EBC should i just do a classic MBC from twosrus? Has anyone had any problems with it? Thanks.
-Americo
the old school profec works quite well, and can be had pretty cheap used on ebay.
looking good so far man!
Americo, update...?
Dustin, ask and you shall receive...
First off, the reasoning for the delay. Close to 2 years ago i bought the gt4 crash bar brackets new from Jeff at toyotaworld. They were out of stock and i was told it would take about 6 weeks. 6 weeks turned into 6 months then a year and so on. While Jeff is a great person to deal with and knows the parts you need especially st205 stuff, in my case i kept getting the run around. Eventually i bought them through Colin in England and for the past month have been waiting on my refund. Coincidentally, today i talked to Jeff and it finally went into effect and i was able to order the new engine parts i needed.
I got the head off and it's been in the shop ready to be rebuilt for the past 2 weeks. I've just been waiting for the supplies to come to my house so i can give everything to the guys at the shop. From a visual standpoint nothing looked wrong with my head, so some may ask why i'm rebuilding it. The engine although it has low miles (63k) it is still from a 1994 donor vehicle. Age along with it being a turbo engine, i figured i'd do it right the first time-no expense spared. So while i wait for my packages to arrive, here are just a few pics from about 2 weeks ago.
Pics below:
My goal to have this finished is January 19th (the day before i go back to school). This week with weather permitting i plan on pulling the 5sfe and prepping the engine bay. I would have had this done a while back but school and work got in the way. Just to shoot for the sympathy factor, i've had two 10 page papers, 4 finals and a 25 minute marketing presentation.
Nice work dude.
God damn 4 finals, 2 10pg papers, and a presentation. AND you work? hats off to you, I tried 2/3rds that load last year and couldnt handle it with my job. Engines looking good btw, must say im jealous.
lookin great so far man! keep up the good work, take your time, it will pay off in the end.
Nice man. polish all that stuff up, it will really look great. Nice and clean under the valve cover, nice.
Very, very small update:
Finishing date has been pushed back. I've been waiting on the seals and gaskets since december 9th and still no delivery. Jeff is off today so i'll call him first thing in the morning.
-Americo
...all i got atm.
lookin good so far man...i remember you postin somethin in my thread about how you would like to do this someday...well its about time you got started..haha..we gotta meet up sometime when you get it done...once i get my swap done i'll have no prob. crusin to AC for the day...maybe even organize a meet down there...thatd be sweet...good luck with the swap and keep us updated..you lucky bastards with your GT's
A meet in AC when you guys are done, Im down. Looking good so far man.
Flintstones car FTW GL on the swap
wow.. looks like such a fun project!! can't wait to see more updates!!
awsome job .. hope to see it in time for street wars when im down there
I didn't realize how much time has gone by with school and work. Big update tomorrow...i hope.
keep your head up Americo, it'll be fun when it's done.
your getting there man..!!!!! soon to be powerd by the 3RD GEN!!!!! hahaahhaha
BUMP with no updated pictures? Yup. No more excuses, this thing needs to get finished. Deadline is set that I have to finish before or on June 13th. The engine is all bolted together, just need to figure out wiring and bolt the tranny on. If I can accomplish both those things tomorrow i'll be stoked and pull an all nighter to put it in the engine bay. Wish me luck, I'm tired of having an amazing engine just taking up space in my garage and not where it belongs.
get on that **** then! im free all this week, but im one broke mo fo, so if you wanna pay for gas and tolls id be more then happy to come down and give you a hand like i said i would. either way good luck man...im lookin forward to seein it done already!
call me tomorrow Rico, I'll talk you through the wiring
I was just in AC a couple nights ago.. Any updates??
good luck Rico
Thats it i'm selling my house and moving to the north east!!
Do you have to have a 3sgte or 5sfte turboed to move in up there or can you just be in the process of doing a swap?
Great Pics, I hope one day i'll have time and $$ to finally start AND FINISH a sawp!
Good luck!
hi.
Pics,update,pics,update,pics!!!
in. the. car. finally.
it started to rain :-\.
quick phone pic:
WOOOOT
almost there americo!
Picked up a hood and bumper off this guy yesterday. Awesome kid, and an even awesomer ride. I can say I'm jealous, I don't know how much work his done to it but it looks about the same in the last pic he posted. But he'll get it done, he looks like he knows what his doing.
Thanks again man, and keep it going
.
looking like a very nice transplant going on here.
Do you plan on keeping the 2SGTE running stock or have you got plans for a bigger turbo?
You using stock ECU? Also I see they've supplied you with drive shafts and propshafts. Is it a straights implant? Also will you be running this as a FWD only?
good **** rico....i demand more pictures though...and give us a video of it running....hopefully everything else from here on out is smooth sailing
i'll post pics/vid once i get this fuel issue resolved. i'm going out of state this weekend, but monday i'm hoping for good things.
hey.. i dunno if you finished your swap.. but the way I handled the fuel problem was to run the big blue wire that goes from the fuel pump(underneath your back seat), to a power source.
thanks. i'll run the fuel pump @ constant if i can't resolve my issue.
boom shocka locka.
magnaflow suggestions anyone?
its looking good man...did you get the crossmember and all the mounts in?
as for an exhaust...go with a full 3"
as for the muffler...theres a few that sounds good on our cars...the magnaflow is defentially a good choice...the others that i have found that sound really good is the Megan GT turbo muffler (i might be going with) and the HKS hi power silent (little on the pricey side but looks badass and sound pretty damn good too.
crossmember and mounts in and the engine doesn't move a cm. it's awesome.
car should be driveable this week. tomorrow i'm replacing my front end components and getting the axles in.
i drove it tonight! just real quick around the block after replacing everything. all seems well, but i need to check everything when i have daylight. stay tuned!
nice !
sweeeeeet!!!!!
i hope to join the 3rd gen 3s club shortly!
Quick break down:
PROBLEM: the car starts and dies within 15-20 seconds.
SOLUTION: checked all my wiring and SEEMS to be right. jumped B+ to FP, st205 fuel pump is heard on ignition turn and stays running.
PROBLEM: LEAN! at least that's what my temporary rigged AEM UEGO is telling me.
SOLUTION: clueless.
PROBLEM: i just want to drive this thing and can use all the help i can get.
SOLUTION: anyone free friday?
congratulations!! we are on the same level lol... its almost as if you are describing my car.. two people with the same idling problems =( so Im assuming its not the sensor which is broken on my engine after all.. if you're having the same problems.. you checked for vacuum leaks correct? If so anyone care to help us out?
no new updates, still need some extra hands. volunteers?
help?
once my car is done, I wouldn't mind giving you a hand, but in the mean time, help yourself, do some trouble shooting, post videos, actual symptoms, I mean, show interest on fixing your own car, as said, once my car is done I really wouldn't mind driving there and lending you a hand, but by the looks of your last posts is like you gave up on it and are waiting on a magic hero to show up and fix it for you.
noone knows your car better than you, so start trying, and post findings, some people may not have the time to physically go there and help you but they would take time to guide you over the net. follow instructions and post results back. as anyone trying a swap, we all need a network of people who to ask vital questions and guidance, get in contact with your network, and start eliminating things, there are only so many things that can cause an specific symptom, you start testing one at a time and you know where the problem is not located, and at some point you'll find your issue.
you're absolutely right stevenson.
UPDATE:
the car will be on the road starting in May. (that's when my insurance renews)
my AEM UEGO is reading "---" at idle but if i rev it the slightest bit it'll move between 12ish-13.5.
(my current idle at operating temp is 800, it's possible i have a vac leak since it shakes a tiny bit)
no check engine lights, originally had a code 54 for the coolant temp which i took care of (burped the system, filled to max)
my fuel issue is unresolved, i can bridge fp to b+ and it runs fine. i'll most likely wire it like lago's did rather than trying to use the stock set up.
AEM UEGO hooked up and in place (again) - was reading (---) due to the wideband bung being so low on the downpipe and not having an exhaust.
AEM boost gauge hooked up and in place
Greddy Profec B hooked up
in need of exhaust, and to sell my Z3 so that i have a spot on my insurance to put the celica on.
other than that, everything is great.
nice mannnnnnn keep it up
haha thanks. the z3 isn't ignored by any means, tasteful small mods
.
UPDATE:
+ Ordered a magnaflow 14835, and high flow cat.
+ Exhaust should be on within two weeks.
take some pictures of the exhaust when its on!
^ i will be getting the exhaust done this upcoming week, so pictures no doubt.
UPDATE: Yesterday I said goodbye to my Z3 and immediately after I was at the DMV getting the tags switched over to the Celica. It's official, she's ready to drive...sorta (waiting on a fender to come in to finish my front end.)
exhaust on, sounds amazing-will post pics in the morning.
when i was on the GSP, my boost reading was all over the place. also my vac. at idle reads 12-14 (should be 20 +/- 2) vaccum leak possibly?
it idle's normal i believe. on start up it's at 1100 and then drops to 800. i think i tapped into a line that doesn't give the best or most accurate reading. i should of just went with the spot behind the intake manifold to begin with. once the weather clears up i'll fix it.
here are progress pics of the celica's exhaust, will take finished pics when the weather clears up:
video of just downpipe on engine:
http://s139.photobucket.com/albums/q315/italianroyalty/FATEs%203SGTE/?action=view¤t=P4160199-1.flv
sounds badass just leave it with the down pipe
^haha i wish i could of left it.
anyways, i wired my fuel pump how lagos did:
http://www.6gc.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=64777&hl=pump
still not staying alive for longer than 20 seconds. could it be my fuel pump relay? like i mentioned before, when i bridge FP to B+ it runs just fine. suggestions please.
I would guess you wired in the relay backwards.
Instead of it switching over to a lower voltage it just shuts off.
removed due to stupidity.
update:
Drove it today, pulled great and then my pass. axle snapped.
new Toyota addition to the family on Friday.
what a way to ruin a good day
UPDATE: about 4,500 miles driven on the beast and it is running great other than having a small oil leak (drivers side: seems like it starts at the head area and drips down off the side of the trans.)
It very well could be my valve cover gasket not sitting flush from when i retorqued the head or my dizzy. From what i read it could also be coming off the rear main seal but i highly doubt it. With the weather being the way it is, it's been tough to work on it but i hope in the next few months to have some progress.
Many items are waiting to be installed but here is a small teaser of my TRD Side Skirts:
oh and of course for those that know my car, it still needs the front bumper mounted.
Also for those that aren't aware, i purchased another project that many people should recognize:
Also my 91 MR2 Turbo is now for sale:
Wow, so he finally sold it huh...what are your plans for the Celica?
just out of curiosity, how much are you selling the mr2 for?
4,000
BUMP. Car was dropped off for paint.
(Should i move this thread to "My Projects?")
Ha, shiny. What will be the final color?
how much did it cost you to paint? i need a place around here to paint my side skirts next month
^sneak peak
Starlight Black 217.
lookin good rico!!
Update:
nice! cant wait to see it completed!
Looks promising!
Finished yet? I want to see the pictures.
A few iPhone pictures:
beautiful.
You're 3 years deep into it and you really did it right, looks fantastic.
GORGEOUS!
She looks fantastic Fate! Congratulations on the great job though...definitely an inspiration.
looks GREAT rico! good to see all the hard work paying off!
Thanks everyone! Can't wait to take some better pictures.
UPDATE:
Oil Leak.
Thought it was the valve cover, took care of that.
Thought it might be my transmission leaking through the axle seal on the pass. side, its not due to the oil clearly being engine oil (I used royal purple for my trans fluid).
Rear main seal was replaced when I did the swap.
Other than that, the car runs amazing and boosts great. No longer a misfire in high RPMs when boost is increased - put new spark plugs in / gapped properly.
Will take pictures.
EDIT: also replaced the O-Ring gasket on the distributor, so i don't think it's that.
Cars looking great!
oil leak looks to be coming from close to the head and running down the block on the driver's side.
Could be the inner dizzy seals.
^that's another area of concern I thought about. Very high chance it could be the culprit.
i been creepin lately...good chance im back in the game shortly...but as for your car man, its turing out great....good **** bro
Thanks Joe! Haven't head from you in a while - what's new?
Still alive:
nice seats!
what kind of seats are those..easy fit in?
Leather Recaros from an Evo 8. I used the Recaro sliders and Corbeau brackets. Minor modification but fit perfect.
Must have been expensive, but they look fantastic. The only other seats I'd consider, besides tiger SS-III seats or confetti Recaro ST205 units. Only question, do they come in cloth as well?
Closest to cloth:
Stevenson has a set of these in his celica.
Also, thank you for the compliments.
Loved this thing at DWG. Did you do your headliner yourself?
I picked up the fabric and tested it. Removed the headline+sunroof shade and brought to a shop. Did my door panels as well!
how did she hold up through sandy
Fortunately enough, put her in storage before the storm. Thank you for your concern, could of been real bad.
Yeah its a good thing. I saw the pictures of AC on the news looks like hell there.
Yo! Check your PMs!
Thanks!
Pertains to the fuel pump issue you were having.
Need some opinions:
I am planning to purchase a set of BC coilovers and will be doing custom spring rates. I was thinking 10k front and 8k rear as I know many FWD hondas run it without issue. Would the stiffer spring rates negatively effect handling as I know there comes a point in suspension basics where too much is no good. Planning to also purchase ST sway bars and replace all bushings both front and rear with polyurethane.
Oh ya:
10k, 8k input? Anyone?!
I feel like a heavier spring rate in the rear is better for our cars due to massive under steer. It ballances out and I've made the rear kick out first a few times now. Upgraded the rear with urethane bushings on the sway bar and Moog end links. Also run a harder setting on my shocks. Idk much about the spring rate of the factory springs, but the red eibachs ive got hands great.
Aaparently the D2 RS's that I bought (coilover) have higher spring rates than the BC BR's, which will benefit me when I go low. Don't know if those would work well for your setup though. However they do have upper camber adjustment on the rear mounts/tophats.
Would like a few more responses on spring rates, but in the meantime...
New pickups:
Coilovers next!
E153 where u get that
I thought you already put that tranny in... ?
And for those that are aware of the father/son project:
Nice C-10, those are the only trucks I really like. My friend used to have a sweet 69 step-side with a 350 and 4-speed, was pearl gray. What made me like them so much.
coilovers purchased.
i was just going to ask you soon if you where going to get them before the meet!
updates coming soon, bumping thread to *hopefully raise interest.
interest raised.
ive lost intrest
You sold the car?
he never had the car...IT WAS AN ILLUSION THE WHOLE TIME!!!!
^^lmfao .. If I didn't see it at the CSP meet I may have believed you Mike haha
all that work and you sell the car?
I really just don't understand how people can do that..
Mmm, nothing more lovely than wrestling a transmission off- and on a car.
Besides a lot of things.
BRAKES N' CLUTCH!!
so that means you have an extra e153 laying around now right? Dustins old one I believe?
Random photos:
^ cleaning up to be powder coated.
Converting hubs are we? Veryy nice looking forward to the progress!
How did you make out in your clutch research?
I was JUST about ready to type angry words saying how dare you not powder coat the hubs....but then I scrolled down
what coating did you choose?
Looks awesome Rico! What kind of wheels are you going to run?
The 5×114 swap is getting popular
New wheels, for now...
Rays Gram Lights 57c
17x8.5 +30
5x114.3 of course
Nice glad you picked them up, it's your best option for now until you get your hands on what your looking for. At least now you'll be able to drive it lol looks good man!
get some gram light replacement stickers for them so people dont think you are running Rota's
Before:
Back from coating!
I like it! I like it even more that its flat.
powdercoating?
pretty, why did u decide not to paint inside. it will prevent rust...
scuff it some, then some clear coat maybe?
WOW!!! love this!!! im just about to do the same to my own.. i have a parts car in western MD, and as soon as i get a few days ill be going up to strip all the parts i need for full prep (just like you did) for full poweder and all.. LOVE how this is looking!!!! keep up the great work!!! oh and the yeah, the 5x114.5 conversion is gaining some momentum for sure!!
I wouldn't worry about painting the inside.
The grease on the bushings will prevent rust.
Looks sweet mang.
nevermind, answered my own question haha
^ No worries.
Need to create some type of blocking plate for my MR2 E153 LSD. Does anyone have any tried and true suggestions - with photo? Would my best bet be to weld an aluminum plate? Thanks.
For reference:
MR2 E153 unmodified shifter:
Now with FWD selector installed:
Camry E153:
how about a big rubber plug. so its reversible. cant really weld, unless you remove componets, it will get pretty hot
Just went through the last few years of work and I'm really impressed, man. I got a quick question for ya. When you got the Timken wheel bearings, did they come with all the proper seals or did you have to order them separately? I saw wheel seals on your part sheet, but I'm not doing a 5x114 conversion and I dunno if those seals are specifically for that.
Well I went to my local pool store to pick up some expandable rubber plugs and begin test fitting. I then went to McMaster-Carr and ordered the correct size in silicone as it can withstand higher temperatures. I imagine it will hold up better over time.

Sample photo:
Nothing too crazy to update - inner/outer tie rods, rear sway, lightened flywheel, clutch and LSD transmission, installed. Will have the front end finally off jack stands by the end of the week, then to tackle the rear.
PHOTO DUMP:
Photo comparison of stock inner vs. Deeza brand tie rods. Very impressed with this company based out of Turkey, high quality.

Change of jack and done.
Just a reminder of how it looks on the ground.
Looks awesome man nice work!
That's a beefy inner tie rod. What brand is it?
howd you end up finding them? I see that they distribute out of NJ
i forgot about this...
