6G Celicas Forums _ Suspension/Handling/Braking _ Rebuild SSS (Super Strut Suspension)

Posted by: Wild202 Jan 10, 2017 - 10:42 AM

I brought to you how I solved the problem with a thud on the suspension arms SSS.
I really like to use it SSS suspension arms, because I had the opportunity to compare with McPherson suspension, because like last machine was ST-202.
But after the purchase, I discovered a terrible knock on all the front suspension, which has been difficult to locate.
I started to deal with this problem.

This may help diagnose your problem...

QUOTE

For A and B typical replacement kilometres is around 80-120k. but driving style and suspension set up and roads driven on can alter that.
Aftermarket and rebuilt ball joints tend to not last as long, often requiring replacement within 6 months. Even sooner with stiffer springs and shocks by putting more stress on the joints. (So how much is that going to cost you in the long run to maintain it???)

Came across a checklist for checking Super strut. Since it has extra linkages. It causes some issues when trying to diagnose noises in the suspension as it can be hard to pin point which joint has worn.

QUOTE
CHECKING SUPERSTRUT SUSPENSION
- Jack up front of car, remove front wheels.
- take hold of the spring perch (where the bottom of the spring sits) with both hands.
- try to twist the strut.
If the strut doesn't twist, the super strut joints on that side are ok.
If the strut twists (you should be able to see movement in the short s/s arm joints)....
- 1-2mm (measured at the edge of the spring perch) means it will probably pass a warrant but will need replacing quite soon. You might be able to just notice the car wandering a bit when driving over changing road camber or when braking/accelerating.
- more than 2 mm it will probably fail a warrant, it will need replacing. The car will wander over changing road surfaces and change direction noticeably when accelerating or braking. You will know something is wrong!

S/S joints have a huge load on them, from accelerating, braking and going over bumps. The front s/s control arm has a short arm that connects to the suspension strut. The suspension strut has a ball joint that locates the top of the steering knuckle/hub. If the joints at either end of the short arm become worn the suspension strut can rotate. If it rotates it causes the top of the steering knuckle to move forwards or backwards (due to bumps, accelerating or braking). This causes the wheel to point out a bit or in a bit, causing the car to wander left or right without you moving the steering wheel. This can be very dangerous!

STRANGE NOISES?
Creaking noise? Often in Super strut cars the creaking isn't the lower link arm. I've driven a GTZ with super strut with totally rooted lower link arm and it didn't make a noise! It just wandered across the road!

If the lower link arm is shagged - only put in Toyota genuine new!!! Anything else wears out in about 5,000km! (Cost might be a bit more but you won't regret it.)

That is a lot of work. Looks like you had to break the joints apart, and then machine your own parts to put them back together?

How are the rebuilt parts holding up long term?

Yes, of course I make out, I have made a new sleeve for ball joints. Then all I gathered back. The work there is really a lot.
Even more accurate measurements and tolerances.
As I said earlier, I made my suspension arms 3 years ago, since that time I have and go. The machine is used every day in summer and winter.

Now, I do not change my suspension arms on the my ST-205.
I just unscrew the rear cover and changing the worn bushing on the new, I put the new lubricant and spins back. And I have a new suspension arms again.

Yes, I can do for you, such suspension arms.
You can send me a private message or you can right here in the topic discussed. As you will be comfortable.

Posted by: Wild202 Jan 21, 2017 - 12:28 AM

I can explain why I decided to do it.
The thing is that the new OEM suspension arms are sold at very high prices.
Here is an example:
two lines (horizontal) arm - $ 830
Two banana lever - $ 630
two figure 8 - $ 230

total: $ 1,700, it is very expensive for me.

Posted by: Wild202 Jan 21, 2017 - 11:28 PM

I make the suspension arms are much cheaper and can be used repeatedly. You just unscrew the rear cover and replace with a new sleeve.

If you can manufacture these parts and provide details on how to install without pulling the arm assembly off, you will be providing a much needed solution to the age old SSS replacement problem.

This would be a great solution for those of us that are in North America. It is a pain to send 100 lbs of metal to Poland, wait for a rebuild and then pay for them to be shipped back.

No problem. Let's discuss this question.
It can be right there in the theme, I have nothing to hide.
I can do for any such leverage and further maintenance is not very expensive. If you need repairs bushings kits - also no problem.

And a big plus, is that you do not have to buy new levers of suspension.

just to clarify, how much to rebuild all pieces? The Camber Control Links (Figure 8's), control arms #1 and Banana control arms #2. = Total of 4 arms and 2 camber links....

also i like how you did the banana arm bushing. it seems a better design over the GT4 racing.eu because it allows for more moving within the mounting point. http://www.gt4-racing.eu/index.php/toyota-celica-st205/st205-front-suspension-arms

also you said these last longer than Original Toyota Arms (and I believe you), however gt4 racing offers 1 year warranty. do you offer the same???

No problem. I'll give you a one-year warranty (and you can go to the Rally or ring races, anywhere).
If in one year you break my levers of suspension I'll repair them for free (at your expense).
I can not guarantee the polyurethane parts because I do not produce them, but I just buy them and put them in the banana lever of the suspension.
Restoration of suspension levers - 425 USD

Yes, I agree with you on everything except one.
When the suspension that you bought in Poland will begin to knock, you again have to pay 500 + postal services.
When my suspension starts to knock, you can repair it yourself by paying 120 for new sleeves (the parcel will have a weight of 100 grams).
The shipping price will not be big.

Since I am engaged in the restoration of SSS levers to Celica (202-205) for more than one year and in the mail I was repeatedly asked to restore the stratum for Levin, I still decided to do it.
So, I'll start. Since I was not sure about the result, I had to do it with my own money and with my leverage.
I myself go to the ST-205 and make levers also for the 205th and 202nd Celica, so I did not have any leverage on Levine.

Good work!

Do you have replacement boots for sale for ST205 SSS? The arms I have are good, but the wrecking yard tore the boots when removing off the car. Need to replace before installing on the car.

Thank you.
What "replacement boots"?

Thank you.
What "replacement boots"?

The rubber boots that cover the joins to keep grease in and dirt outside.

Got it. We call it anther.
Which ones do you need?

Fantastic work Wild202! This is a great service you are offering.

I have had some of the rebuilt arms from Poland, however they didn't last long before one started to fail; around 10k miles. To be fair they did send a replacement as it was within the 12 months guarantee, but after around 18 months the other side started knocking too.
I ended up eventually replacing them all with new from Toyota.

I suspect they don't open up the joints fully like you do & replace in their entirety, but use some sort of resin injection method to restore the main joints on the lower arm & fig 8, similar method to this: http://www.renewit.co.za/how-it-works.html

Thank you.
I constantly do SSS suspension levers.
Just forget to upload photos here.
Soon I will do a couple more reports.

And yes, maybe you are right, and maybe not.
I do not know how to make SSS leverage in Poland, so I can not say anything.
Unfortunately I'm not familiar with their work.

Dismantled everything and threw it into the trash (because with such material it is not possible to work).

Titanium or aluminum? No problem, but you will not like the price (it will be expensive). And so it is completely solved.

awesome. however, what is that silver pin on the back of each spherical bushing??? is that a cotter pin???

what i like most about your product is the banana arm bushing. your is almost exactly like the OEM Superstrut Banana Arm.

If you look here https://www.gt4-play.co.uk/shop/banana-arm-polybushes this type of bushing, I believe, interferes with up and down movement of the banana arms

id definitely recommend you to others. honestly superstrut is a good design, but most have never tried it because parts were hard to come by. but now with someone like you its quite easy.

id suggest you post your services on "The Official 6GC Group" on facebook.

Posted by: Wild202 Dec 3, 2017 - 10:10 AM

Thank you.
Yes, it's a cotter pin on the back of the ball body.
You can pull out this cotter pin, unscrew the back cover and put new bushings inside and you have new CCC levers again.

In fact, I restore any SSS (202,205,231, Levin 111).
  However, 205 SSS more often.
