6G Celicas Forums _ My Project _ mattjw UK st205 project

Posted by: mattjw Feb 6, 2012 - 5:17 PM

hello all, just signed up, thought a project thread was probably the best start biggrin.gif

heres how she looked when i bought her in november 2010 -

opted for a few changes, vinyl front plate, late spec rear lights and a few other bits and pieces to tidy it up around the edges

then a new exhaust system went on, BC Coilovers and a few other bits such as Forge BOV, Apexi Induction kit and a GReddy turbo timer. I also sprayed the wheels black as I knew the new wheels were soon to be fitted and I wanted to detract from the horror that is the TSW Venom!

Now all we needed were some sexy concave 6 spoke 9.5j 18" Rota Grid Drifts saved from an uncaring impreza owner, refurbished by myself and resprayed bronze, wrapped in stretched Falken FK452s, thrown under some heavily pulled arches with 5mm spacer up front, 20mm at the rear -

How they looked when i got them (test fit showed the need for spacing them out, and u may also notice this is pre-coilovers) -

Now im doing my best to steer clear of any obvious aesthetic mods, going along the 'road-worthy track weapon' approach i want to stay away from non-oem bodykits and anything too fussy form wise. Since the above photos i now have huge white Falken tyre lettering (which looks ridiculous but i love it!) Next on the to do list are some interior alterations, a nice dished suede 330mm wheel, maybe a full interior strip and some bride buckets, a rear diffuser of some description and possibly a c-one front splitter. Along with just keeping her running sweet and fixing the bits that go wrong of course biggrin.gif

Thanks for reading!

Posted by: 199celica Feb 7, 2012 - 1:46 AM

wow that thing is really clean it should be on the 2013 calender if we make another in my opinion

Posted by: UndaGrwnD Feb 7, 2012 - 2:44 AM

sick rims !

what specs are the rims and tires ?

got some engine bay pics ?

Posted by: mattjw Feb 7, 2012 - 4:19 PM

rims specs are: 18x9.5j, 5x100 offset et35 (i think), tyres Falken FK452 225/40/18s.

only engine bay photo i have is this one showing the new turbo (oil seals went in the original) and the decat fitted -

and the only shot i have of it with tyre lettering from last week at Ace Cafe London -

Very nice stance man! No rubbing probs?

Posted by: mattjw Feb 7, 2012 - 5:37 PM

yes rubbing probs! but only over aweful bumps in the road at speed, rarely during cornering or over speedbumps at low speeds so i can live with it. i have raised it since i first fitted the BC coilovers as i bought the car to drive 1st and look good 2nd, its no good having an AWD turbo weapon and not being able to corner in it!

Looks great, although let me just say -1 for Rotas...but +20 for fitment. I am rather curious how you did the tyre lettering; I tried mine with a generic automotive-store chalk, which looks great, until it rubs off five minutes later.

I don't mind those original wheels either, they look nice in black. They'd make a good candidate for orange on my car.

Posted by: Mycurse180 Feb 8, 2012 - 12:26 AM

Nicest Celica I've seen on this site hands down.

You, sir, have taste!

Posted by: UndaGrwnD Feb 8, 2012 - 2:06 AM

+1 on that!

i tought that 9.5J would be to wide for a st205...but you even put spacers on it!

Posted by: dudeofchaos Feb 8, 2012 - 3:52 PM

Man this is sick! I want mine pretty much like yours, but mine is white wink.gif Keep up the good work, car def looks insane!

Posted by: mattjw Feb 8, 2012 - 4:21 PM

tyre lettering was sprayed on with a white primer, manipulated the Falken logo on photoshop so it wrapped around an 18" diameter circle in the size i wanted it, printed it out and cut it out with a scalpal then spray mounted it onto the tyre. This would have worked even better if i hadnt done it with the wheels still on the car outside in the wind and just as the sun went down!

dudeofchaos - this wheel and stance setup was always my plan but i spent ages looking for a white one before i settled for black, white will always be my favourite colour for the st205. Storm grey as a second choice although ive never seen one in the flesh, i do like a sexy dark grey on a car though.

Haha, I've always wanted a black Gt-Four, though I got myself a white one (which was my 2nd option) and finally Idk if I'd change for a black one if I could hehe.

Car looks great dude. Always admired it when I saw your thread on CCUK. Those Grids + BC Coilovers look incredible! Storm Grey is a great colour for the Four. I have one myself and think it suits perfectly. I've only ever seen 1 other car in the same colour though! Here is a pic of mine with it's old wheels on (now got rota forces).

Posted by: UndaGrwnD Feb 10, 2012 - 11:05 AM

yes, nice color

Posted by: BonzaiCelica Feb 11, 2012 - 12:33 AM

wow simply clean!!! I really like it biggrin.gif

i think some oem sideskirts would compliment it quite well!!

Posted by: Sunny Feb 11, 2012 - 7:45 AM

Hi,

great car mate, does i ask you what kind of suspension aligment you drive? i also use BC in my car and tested a lot in 2011

greetz

Posted by: johnyboy1976 Feb 11, 2012 - 10:02 AM

Nice car - strange being a later spec car that it has no skirts
have the holes been filled - im taking it they have been.
For me a shiny black faff will always look better than a white one - just look more aggresive and menacing

Posted by: mattjw Feb 11, 2012 - 11:44 AM

what year do the late spec st205s start? what are the differences?

Posted by: richee3 Feb 11, 2012 - 2:20 PM

'96+ are late spec. Non-GT4 models got an updated front bumper and spoiler, and all models got side skirts. Some GT4's came with the updated spoiler as well, but I don't know what percentage that was. There were also updated head and tail lights available on ST202's and ST205's.

Posted by: johnyboy1976 Feb 11, 2012 - 3:30 PM

As above the facelift was 96.
The chrome " celica " sill covers were a option as were recaro seats - but these were also offered for the pre face lift.
then in 98 the GT4 was revised again - out went the 3 post rear spoiler and reverted to the WRC style rear wing with raiser blocks but with a different GT FOUR text on them and all got the projector headlights and silver coloured dash trim

fitted a sparco 350mm suede wheel biggrin.gif love it

and gave her a wash

Posted by: UndaGrwnD Feb 26, 2012 - 5:55 PM

Got a underside body pic? So i can see your exhaust system?

Posted by: dudeofchaos May 5, 2012 - 3:56 PM

Any updates on this build? Your car amazes me, I'm eager to hear more about this Four ^^ Especially engine-wise wink.gif

Posted by: mattjw Jan 11, 2014 - 6:33 AM

just found this old project thread and thought i would update, a lot has happened since the last post!

Things took a slight turn for the worse. Overboosting, clutch problems, seized calipers, huge rust holes in the sills and rear quarter and a fuel leak meant she was clearly begging for a little attention. So i bought a bmw e36 328 to use as a daily drift weapon and put the celica in the garage so the fun could begin.

First on the purchase list was a donor quarter panel

then up in the air she went, ready for some serious grinding. New discs, pads and caliper pins visible in this shot although i ended up sending all four calipers to BIGREDD for reconditioning (they did an incredible job, highly recommended)

and I began gutting the interior. This is very much a before photo

Then the bodywork began -

I ground back the area to see how far the surface rust extended, and found some filler from a previous repair further forward but otherwise the arch profile was looking better than expected. Inner skin however was very worse for wear

and then, hours of grinding, drilling, flapwheeling and welding the following occured, heres a nice condensed version of the hours that followed -

tacced into place -

welded and ground back -

filler lashed on -

arch rolled to a nice even profile with loads of clearance for the wheels given, then hours of filling and flatting -

Posted by: mattjw Jan 11, 2014 - 6:39 AM

a quick shot of the interior before i fitted buckets, floorpan completely stripped of sound deadening and all sprayed satin black. Also removed all the loom for the bits n pieces ive whipped out, arial and motor, rear wiper mechanism, speakers etc

and the sparcos pre-fitting -

Also, removed the sunroof assembly which weighed in at 14kg, perspex replacement can be seen taped up but resting in place.

nice and simple inside now biggrin.gif

also patched the lower right sill due to more rot frown.gif

also whipped the bumper and slam panel off the front and started stripping out the charge cooler system and aircon to make room for FMIC biggrin.gif

clocked turbo and intercooler in place

then off to the paint shop she went, most of the left hand side was blown in and now puts the rest of the car to shame!

exedy paddle clutch and fidanza lightweight flywheel are both now fitted, along with a new cambelt kit.

The current filler neck had a hole in the back and its seized onto the tank so a new tank and filler neck are on their way which will sort the fuel leak issues smile.gif

Really nice car, dude.

This is one of my favourite Celicas here! Glad to see that you not left her diying! Keep posting those nice pics! biggrin.gif thumbsup.gif

Posted by: dudeofchaos Jan 17, 2014 - 7:58 PM

SOOO GLAD you finally updated!
I've finally decided to respray the whole car in black and when I will come out of school and get my job, our cars will be very very similar ^^
Will need to fix the same areas on mine also due to minor, yet horrible to me, rust problems.

I will get BC coilovers also, but not quite sure yet of the stiffness to opt for.
Thinking to go 9kg front/8kg rear, I want to get a close rear/front stiffness ratio to make the car more prone to oversteer rather than understeer.
What specs are yours? What is your feedback? Too stiff for a daily driver? Would you change to another setting if you could go back?

What are your future plans?
Please keep us updated biggrin.gif

Edit: Pretty sure the offset is +23 tongue.gif may be wrong though
Also, do you run minor negative camber to make the 9.5 fit in the front?

WOW! Those pics look great... and then that strip down... wow tongue.gif
