6G Celicas Forums _ My Project _ PegGTS' officially low and slow ST204

Posted by: PegGTS Apr 22, 2013 - 7:22 PM

Just picked this baby up last week for 4000$ and can't wait to get started on it! It's a 1994 GT-S with just over 200000 kms on it, runs like new!

The day I bought her:

It's in pretty good shape other than a few minor rust spots that I'll be getting touched up as soon as all the snow melts, and a small dent in the hood. Also the front Toyota badge is broken, just ordered a new one from the dealer today.
Hard to see in this picture but it looks like somebody closed the hood and there was something under it and it made the dent and they tried to fix it

First "mod" haha, thought I would take off the badge while I wait for a new one but didn't notice there was 2 holes for it so I left it in (upside down tongue.gif)

$4,000? Good god cars are expensive up there. That aside nice buy. I say you should've just broken away the rest of the "circle" on the front badge and let it be. tongue.gif

Posted by: azian_advanced Apr 23, 2013 - 8:57 AM

yup, Winnipeg prices. for just a bit more, it would already put you in gt-four territory.
anyway, it looks like you have quite a list of mods underway, may I suggest you adding heated seats to that list? definitely worth it during the winter months.
and if you want to upgrade to leather seats, my old 95 GT-S is at International (junk yard) off of Day street. sadly the gt-four conversion and lhd projectors were totalled and most of the mods are gone.

Oh awesome, how hard is it to do heated seats? And could it be done with your leather seats?

Also, found a guy selling some parts on kijiji:

http://winnipeg.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicles-auto-parts-tires-auto-body-parts-94-99-Toyota-Celica-Parts-W0QQAdIdZ445264503

Do you think any of these parts would be worth it, also considering I would have to paint them?

Posted by: azian_advanced Apr 23, 2013 - 5:40 PM

I've always been a fan of GT-Four conversions than any other aftermarket bodykits out there, but that's just me.
I was tempted to get the C-ONE kit before, but ended up going the GT-Four route.
I think the carbon fiber oem hood would go great with the white exterior.

I was thinking of getting one of the hoods considering I need a new one anyways. How would a carbon fiber hood hold up in the winter? It can get to around -45 degrees C around here

Posted by: PegGTS Apr 23, 2013 - 11:46 PM

Also what would be a good price to offer for the carbon fiber hood? There aren't that many celicas around and it doesn't look like this guy gets too many offers on it so I'm sure I can bring him down quite a bit...would 200$ be going way too low?

Posted by: azian_advanced Apr 24, 2013 - 1:15 AM

Just fyi, the guy's name is keith. he's a member of the forum (kloudkicka).
if all you want is an oem hood, i have one at my parents place in wpg in mint condition but it's also red.
i've had it sitting for years and will let it go for cheap. i'm leaving for wpg thursday morning if you're interested.
but if you're after carbon fiber, i would think it's worth at least $300.

Posted by: Box Apr 24, 2013 - 1:18 AM

From what I can find the Seibon and VIS CF hood is $500-600 new shipped. Eh, you could try offering $200 and if you could get it for $300 that'd be good I suppose.

Just bought some blaze green Plasti Dip, gonna be spraying my wheels with it while I save up for real wheels haha

Note these aren't my actual rims, just a picture from google to show the colour

Posted by: PegGTS May 3, 2013 - 12:33 AM

Okay I tried plasti dipping the rims today and it came out looking like **** lol...anybody know why this would happen? Maybe it was too cold? Spraying too close or too thick? When the spray came out of the nozzle it came out really bubbly and not spray-like...is the nozzle maybe bad / dirty or maybe the cans are just bad?

You did that so wrong...

First off, never paint your wheels on the car. 1) because you'll get overspray on the car 2) the paint will run downward because of gravity and 3) it's just a common sense type of thing.

Secondly, when painting (and your wheel is off the car), put cardboard under it so that it doesn't get on the ground and get note cards. You place the note cards in that little lip between the wheel and the tire, and they stick out the long way. This is so over spray does not get on your tire. Though it is plastidip, it's a PITA to rub it all off the tire.

Third, when you are painting correctly with the wheel on the ground, clean off the wheel with a damp rag. If it was spray paint you would do more cleaning, but plastidip sticks to anything anyway lol Anywho, you want to start off in light coats and build it up. It looks like you just went all out on that thing on the first coat, that's a big no no. It will bubble up like that if you spray it on too heavy, but yes, the coldness doesn't help too much either.

It looks like it dried pretty well though, but you should definitely go back over some of the areas that are light so that it's more even.
If I sound like a dick at all, I'm sorry, I just took a break from studying for my finals and I'm wired on caffeine pills right now lol
I hope that helps you though!

Edit: If it's coming out of the bottle like that, it's definitely too cold to spray. Shaking it up some more might help, but probably not so much in the cold.

Posted by: The_enD May 3, 2013 - 3:07 AM

To add to the good advices above me.
You should check out "dipyourcarcom" youtube and see how it's all done.
When the weather is cold it helps to put the can in hot water prior to the paint process, so when you spray the paint inside is actually warm.

Posted by: Timmyface May 3, 2013 - 6:23 AM

Pretty much as mkernz22 Said.
Make sure its a nice day. Sunny, not hot, and not windy.
Thoroughly clean your wheel.
Do many light coats, with a light sweeping action, and give it about 20minutes between each coat.
Don't spray it on thick, or too wet.
And you should be sweet.

On that note though, 3 of my 4 nozzles turned to **** after a few sprays, started splattering out a bit because it was building up/running at the cap. Just try another.
And with the 'wheel on/off the car' is a bit of ahit and miss topic, with plastidip that is.
With plastidip you do tiny light coats, so there will be no runs or build up etc.

I just done my wheels, i took them off the car, but still layed them upright, at like a 10degree angle.
The final coat i done was when they were on the car.

So try again man, try plan it out and tae your time, and it should come out pretty sweet. It did dry alot better, so good luck next time!

Posted by: Ted95 May 3, 2013 - 6:41 AM

^^ all the above is 100% correct. i work with plasti dip all the time where i work, I have to paint alot of things with it. Painting is a skill of paitence, you need to take your time with it a far as prepping the wheels and proper time between coats. it will take quite a few coats because of how clear the paint is but once it finished it should lay very flat and smooth and not bubbly at all. just dont spray it on to heavy, just get nice even light coverage through out the wheel until your completely covered. for the peices i have to paint it usually takes about 5-6 coats, but thats because im painting clear plastic black..

really make sure the surface is clean tho and that it isnt to cold, let the wheels sit in the sun to warm them up first before painting them. you dont have to paint them in the sun but id recommend letting them warm up in the sun and letting them dry in the sun after they are painted.

Goodluck my man!

Thanks for the advice everyone! I think what my main problem was was that the cans were way too cold. It was probably about 0 Celsius / 32 Fahrenheit when we were doing it, and I didn't realize that the cans needed to be warm before doing it. When it started coming out bubbly we just got frustrated haha and I think that's what really messed us up, we started trying all sorts of things to make it work. Spraying lights coats, thick coats, spraying far away, from close...how far away should you spray from when doing it? As far as taking the wheels off, I don't have a jack at the moment and saw a few videos from DipYourCar explaining how to do it with the wheels still on. I'm assuming I should peel it all off and start again?

Posted by: The_enD May 3, 2013 - 1:42 PM

If you don't like it, obviously you should be peeling it off.
Get a heater, close the garage, put your plasti in a big basin with warm water and let it is for a while. While waiting, clean them wheels good!

Yup will be peeling it off and redoing it this weekend since it's supposed to be a lot nicer. Only thing is, it's really tough to peel the overspray off the tires, it isn't coming off in one, it's just ripping, any tips on getting that off? I do have a heater in the garage so I'll try and keep it as warm as possible, obviously I should open the door when I'm spraying though right? I assume the fumes are pretty deadly haha

Posted by: The_enD May 3, 2013 - 1:58 PM

I'll put a mask and keep it closed and warm.
When dipping wheels it's easier to remove the dip from the tire when there is a good layer of it on the tire itself, not just a tiny amount of overspray.
I don't know what to say, either get to work and start cleaning it or spray just the tire and let it bond, then try to peel it.

I've heard WD40 corrodes the dip too so I might try that on the tires. Next time I'm taping them off / using index cards though to avoid this haha

Like I said, get note cards and put them in between the lip of the wheel and the tire to prevent overspray. Have fun getting the rest of that off, I couldn't but at least mine was black. lol

Yeah I will be doing that next time around lol, thanks. If it doesn't turn out this time...then I think I'm retiring from plast-dipping

Primer, adhesion promoter and paint. (after a good clean)

They look ready to paint, maybe a little scuffing with a scotchbrite pad for better primer adhesion will do.

Posted by: Box May 9, 2013 - 3:18 AM

If you know what you're doing there's certainly no problem with doing it yourself.

Posted by: PegGTS May 9, 2013 - 11:45 AM

They say they're already primed and ready to paint, should I primer them anyways?

Finally got a chance to update this from the other day.

I've been wanting to do something different with my license plate bezel lately and thought of this and just had to do it. I thought about doing the whole bezel black but wanted to do something a little more original that hasn't been done. I ordered the decal from JasonTX a while ago and just got the chance to put it on. It was my first time working with a decal this big and with something as corner-y and complicated as the license plate bezel tongue.gif Considering that I think it turned out pretty well, other than a few spots that are only noticeable from right up close. I'm going to try and touch up a few spots and maybe eventually completely redo it, but for now I'm happy with it.

I love how it looks, not too obnoxious but definitely different. Threw on the vanity plate for a quick shoot, let me know what you guys think smile.gif

if use have a couple of air bubbles under the vinyl you can poke them with a small safety pin and use a heat gun (lowest setting) and a little pressure on the bubble to work it out.

very nicely done for your first larger decal.

if you do ever redo it i'll make that bottom ray a little thicker since some of it is lost in the bend

if use have a couple of air bubbles under the vinyl you can poke them with a small safety pin and use a heat gun (lowest setting) and a little pressure on the bubble to work it out.

very nicely done for your first larger decal.

if you do ever redo it i'll make that bottom ray a little thicker since some of it is lost in the bend

Thanks for the decal, it looks great smile.gif And if I redo it I might get you to make all the rays a little longer because I ended up having to stretch the vinyl quite a bit with a hairdryer to get it to fit, it did turn out well considering though.

Another quick update (Pictures ahoy):

Got my SSIII front splitters and door sills from Josh not too long ago. Got the door sills installed right away and finally got around to installing the splitters on Saturday before going to a meet. I also repainted my rear splitters and installed those along with my rear mudflaps again. I need to get some better double sided tape to hold the splitters on because the stuff I have now is cheap and doesn't hold them lol. I also want to repaint the rear splitters because they turned out a lot more yellow than the rest of my car. I'll probably repaint the front ones too when I can find a paint that matches lol because they're a little scratched from shipping I think. But overall I'm happy with how everything looks, just need sideskirts!

Oh and I "fixed" my door handle from when it got broken into until I can get it to a shop to get fixed for real haha. This tape matches better than the paint on my rear splitters, maybe I'll just wrap them in this! laugh.gif

I guess I can update this, been a while lol. Long post and lots of pictures incoming!

Where to start...well first of all, I finally filled my riser blocks and repainted them flat black. Then I wasn't happy with my filling job and redid it. then I wasn't happy with it again and am in the process of redoing them again tongue.gif I'm also currently redrilling the holes to mount the blocks to the spoiler because they were slightly off and it was bugging me lol

http://s1334.photobucket.com/user/PegGTS/media/IMAG1439_zps03e0c646.jpg.html

Next I decided to grind down my brake hubs and repaint them because they were unbelievably rusty from last winter (I had just replaced them over the winter so they're pretty new brakes)

Before:

http://s1334.photobucket.com/user/PegGTS/media/IMAG1445_zps03b6b816.jpg.html

After (I wasn't too worried about the overspray on the rotor since it would just rub off when I use the brakes):

http://s1334.photobucket.com/user/PegGTS/media/IMAG1453_zps5632a478.jpg.html

Next I took apart the front end to try and see what was going on with the bumper bolts. The whole front end it pretty beat up so it was a huge pain in the ass to get it off. This picture sums up how I felt after getting the bumper off.

http://s1334.photobucket.com/user/PegGTS/media/Snapchat-20140720121758_zpsfc092916.jpg.html

Turns out one of the bolts on the bracket that mounts the bumper to the fender is broken. I'm just going to saw them all down and weld new ones in when I get a chance.
http://s1334.photobucket.com/user/PegGTS/media/IMAG1470_zps50edf7ef.jpg.html

Installed my clear highs while I was at it as well.

http://s1334.photobucket.com/user/PegGTS/media/IMAG1461_zps162c2172.jpg.html

Also tested out my custom lows and found out that they're pretty much toast. One of them is missing a tab, the other one has fallen apart inside and was rattling and the projector glass has a crack in it, they don't have any way to secure a bulb into them...I am going to try to make them work because they would look really good but I don't know if I can... frown.gif

This is how the socket looks on the lows

http://s1334.photobucket.com/user/PegGTS/media/IMAG1500_zpse5742ee9.jpg.html

Oh and I also mounted my fog lights while I was at it. Didn't have the time to wire them up so they're just there for looks for now haha until I can get a chance to do it tongue.gif

Then I finally replaced my shot hatch struts...that I just replaced in the fall already. I tried talking to RockAuto about it but they only had a 3 month warranty on them frown.gif No more holding my hatch open with my head!

http://s1334.photobucket.com/user/PegGTS/media/IMAG1482_zps69434dae.jpg.html

Then I decided to repaint the rising sun on the license plate bezel rather than a decal because it was starting to peel in a few places because I suck at applying big decals tongue.gif I mixed up some paint for cheap at work and sprayed it. The paint is Mazda Velocity Red, paint code 27A. I scuffed up the white then masked off around the decal, peeled the decal, scuffed up the paint underneath it, shot it with the red a few times, then peeled off the masking tape and re-cleared the whole bezel to give it an even shine throughout. Pretty happy with the results.

http://s1334.photobucket.com/user/PegGTS/media/IMAG1509_zpsbb15db67.jpg.html

At some point I also managed to bend a rim on a pothole despite the amount of meat on my tires... rolleyes.gif

http://s1334.photobucket.com/user/PegGTS/media/IMAG1358_zps4bca47e7.jpg.html

Last week I had my door handle repaired finally from when it got broken into, they did a really good job on it.

http://s1334.photobucket.com/user/PegGTS/media/IMAG1537_1_zpsf3e841eb.jpg.html

Right now I am currently working on fixing the rust all the way around my car, then hopefully going in for paint! smile.gif

This spot wasn't too had, just surface rust. Grinded it down, treated the metal with Picklex 20, body filler, glaze, and primer.

http://s1334.photobucket.com/user/PegGTS/media/IMAG1538_zps14a2e238.jpg.html

This spot turned out a lot worse than I expected. started to grind it down then I went right through the metal...found lots of body filler there already. So then I had to make a decision; quick fix, or long-term fix. Decided it wasn't worth it to weld new metal in at this point so I just grinded it down as much as possible and treated the rust, filled and primed it. Perhaps when the rust comes back I'll weld new metal in, but for now it just doesn't seem worth it.

http://s1334.photobucket.com/user/PegGTS/media/IMAG1542_zpsfb18d619.jpg.html

And lastly, I received my spacers on Friday and installed them! smile.gif 25mm in the rear, 20mm in the front. Pretty happy with how they sit now, I just need to lower it a little bit now. Although the back tires rub when I go over bigger bumps so I will need to get the fenders rolled.

Here's the website for it. Not sure where to buy it in the states but I work at a automotive paint store in my city and that's where I got it. It's awesome stuff, we have a rusted rad shell on display that was treated with it on one half about three years ago and it's still clean. And the floors get mopped like 5 times a day in the winter so that thing should be rusted to hell lol. It's super easy to use too, just spray it on and leave it wet for about 10 minutes then wipe it off.

A little late to reply haha but thanks! biggrin.gif

It's been a while, so time for another update I guess tongue.gif

Where to start...well, I wanted to do something different with my interior for a while, started looking at hydro-dipping it, but I didn't want to try the DIY kit and screw it up, and the cost to get it professionally done is a little pricey so I decided to paint it in the mean-time. Nothing crazy like blue or red, I wanted to keep it subtle and still OEM-looking. So I got a SEM metallic grey spray bomb from work (technically for plastic bumpers but it's all the same stuff). I took apart my interior and replaced everything with the spare set I had (which is actually in better condition than my stock set so I decided to paint my stock set) and got to work. Sprayed everything with SEM plastic adhesion promoter, then gave it all a few good coats of the grey.

http://s1334.photobucket.com/user/PegGTS/media/IMAG1615_zpsd3323004.jpg.html

I gotta say, I'm really impressed with the SEM paint. It goes on very nice, even when I tried laying it on a little thicker I did not get any runs. And it's held up for a few months now with no signs of wear so far. I'm happy with the results, nice and subtle.

http://s1334.photobucket.com/user/PegGTS/media/interior2_zps15462084.jpg.html
http://s1334.photobucket.com/user/PegGTS/media/interior1_zps7cbf25be.jpg.html
http://s1334.photobucket.com/user/PegGTS/media/interior4_zpsa9ccdc63.jpg.html

Next, I decided I wanted to do something a little different with my trunk as well. Not sure why, but I fell in love with the hardwood trunk look. So I went to the hardware store, bought some MDF and some hardwood, and got to work. Stripped the trunk and it was filthy underneath

http://s1334.photobucket.com/user/PegGTS/media/IMAG1656_zps8ea79311.jpg.html

After trying to clean it up a bit. Don't know where that black stuff on the right came from lol.

http://s1334.photobucket.com/user/PegGTS/media/IMAG1659_zpsbf12931d.jpg.html

Glued the hardwood to the MDF, took the carpet out of the trunk, laid it down, traced it, then cut.

http://s1334.photobucket.com/user/PegGTS/media/IMAG1654_zps4301db72.jpg.html
http://s1334.photobucket.com/user/PegGTS/media/IMAG1658_zpse4a9de82.jpg.html
http://s1334.photobucket.com/user/PegGTS/media/IMAG1663_zpsa4f02c37.jpg.html

Next, I attached my 10" JL sub and Phoenix Gold amp.

http://s1334.photobucket.com/user/PegGTS/media/IMAG1667_zps094818d0.jpg.html

Threw it in the trunk, installed my rear strut bar, and I was done! The markings were there because I was originally going to make a hatch to get to the spare tire, but I couldn't see an easy was of making it work, so I just left it. It isn't too hard to lift up in case I ever need my spare tire. I have not found the time to wire in the sub, so I'm not sure how it sounds just yet. I'll be having a wiring party in the spring so if it doesn't sound nice, I will build a box for it underneath.

http://s1334.photobucket.com/user/PegGTS/media/IMAG1671_zpsd961d99a.jpg.html
http://s1334.photobucket.com/user/PegGTS/media/DSCF2823_zps35f02fa4.jpg.html

Next, I had my fenders rolled because my tires were rubbing with my spacers. They still rub slightly, but not enough to worry about for now. When I do eventually lower the car, I may have to go with very slight negative camber in the rear, nothing crazy though. Just to avoid rubbing.

http://s1334.photobucket.com/user/PegGTS/media/IMAG1664_zps9504e79e.jpg.html

had some black plasti-dip laying around so I decided to try out the "angry eyes" look on my highs. Actually turned out pretty nice, although the dip peeled up a bit when I peeled the tape off, will have to redo them in the spring and not wait so long to peel the tape off.

http://s1334.photobucket.com/user/PegGTS/media/IMAG1679_zps2475bfaf.jpg.html
http://s1334.photobucket.com/user/PegGTS/media/IMAG1682_zpsa390c3e9.jpg.html

Also got finished with all the rust fighting (for the most part, have a few smaller spots to do but the bigger areas are done). For the driver's side rocker panel, I had new metal welded in by a customer of mine, then painted and cleared it myself.

http://s1334.photobucket.com/user/PegGTS/media/IMAG1687_zps34990348.jpg.html

At the same time, while I was doing some painting on the back of the car, I peeled the tape off my bumper and this happened.

http://s1334.photobucket.com/user/PegGTS/media/IMAG1677_zps2117e43f.jpg.html

The paint should not have just peeled off that easily, so I took it back to the shop that had fixed the bumper in the spring, and they admitted it was their fault and they will be repainting it next week.

http://s1334.photobucket.com/user/PegGTS/media/IMAG1677_zps2117e43f.jpg.html

THEN, disaster struck. One day when I was leaving work, I went to put my car into gear, and it wouldn't go at all. Tried forcing it and it just grinded like crazy. So me and my coworker had to push my car into the work compound and I grabbed a work car. After getting it into the compound, I tried putting it into gear again and it finally went in but I decided I didn't want to take a chance and took a work car anyways.

I kept driving my car for a couple months with no issues. Fast forward to late September, on my way to work after getting gas I went to shift into second, and it wouldn't go at all. Put it in neutral and it wouldn't go into any gears, so I had to coast it onto a side street. Sat there for a few minutes trying to get it to go into gear, but nothing. Something was screwed. Luckily I was only a couple blocks from home so I left the car there, and walked home. My car sat there for a few days until we took my brother's truck and towed it back to our garage.

http://s1334.photobucket.com/user/PegGTS/media/IMAG1703_zps4c0e80f3.jpg.html

While it was in the garage, I decided I may as well take the valve cover off and paint it tongue.gif sprayed it with some VHT black wrinkle paint, although I think it was too cold so the paint did not wrinkle at all.

http://s1334.photobucket.com/user/PegGTS/media/IMAG1720_zpsf1af17da.jpg.html
http://s1334.photobucket.com/user/PegGTS/media/IMAG1719_zpsa8f9a9c1.jpg.html

It sat in our garage, and I had my girlfriend's dad (who is a mechanic at Honda) have a look at it. He came to the conclusion that it had to be something with the clutch, great news...since we didn't have the time nor garage space to get that done, I drove it onto my street (started it in second gear and drove it) and it sat there for a couple weeks while we waited for a family friend to have time to replace the clutch.

Finally he had time to get it done, so I drove it down to his place in second gear the whole way, and he got to work on it. A few days, and $675 later, I had my car back and it was glorious. He showed me my old clutch, I had broken 2 of the springs.

http://s1334.photobucket.com/user/PegGTS/media/IMAG1757_zpsf087284e.jpg.html

Then the snow came and it was time to put the winter wheels on. It's crazy the difference in wheel gap between my summer and winter tires.

http://s1334.photobucket.com/user/PegGTS/media/IMAG1762_zps23d6cb50.jpg.html
http://s1334.photobucket.com/user/PegGTS/media/IMAG1761_zps6e7a6930.jpg.html

And that's basically it. This is mostly how she'll sit until spring.

http://s1334.photobucket.com/user/PegGTS/media/IMAG1795_zpsc6083daa.jpg.html

Also, here's some random shots I took of my car over the summer / fall:

I wanted to get some fall shots of my car so I took it to a local park one day and messed around. Realized I forgot to put my front splitters on for it rolleyes.gif Also this was my first time editing with Lightroom and I love it!

I prefer a little meat with my wheels haha. Plus our roads are awful here, even with the amount of tire I have I still managed to bend a rim on a pothole...

Also a little teaser of what I'm planning:

Don't let him get to you, I'm Mr. Sidewall. tongue.gif I need at least four inches of sidewall for it to look right to me. I just can't get into the low profile look.

Also, GOLD!!!!

Posted by: PegGTS Jan 10, 2015 - 4:55 PM

Yeah I've never been a big fan of the look either, sometimes I don't mind if it it's done right. Although I think with my next set of tires I'll go down to a 205/50/16 or something similar instead of the 205/55/16 I'm running now.

Well, time for an update!

So since the last update, I received and installed my cluster pods from The_enD! Really happy with them, they're very high quality.

Fast forward to last Saturday, I installed my KYB struts and Tein springs! A friend let me use his uncle's shop with a lift to make things much easier. We got to work and within less than 5 hours we were done! It took a lot less time than I thought actually tongue.gif I was completely expecting all the bolts to be absolutely seized in there but they weren't bad, probably because I used about a whole can of penetrating oil on them the night before laugh.gif But as always, things didn't go as smoothly as planned.

After everything was put back together, I had some nasty sounds. We couldn't get the rear strut mount nuts to tighten all the way because they just kept spinning, so it was making a rattling sound in the rear. Tried everything; impact gun, holding the piston while tightening the nut, but nothing worked. Eventually found out that the nut was actually running out of thread, so threw a couple washers on and it tightened just fine.

Also the front was making a clunking sound when turning the wheel. Had a look at it yesterday and it turns out the strut mounts aren't turning smoothly with the wheels, they are getting caught up and making a clunking sound. I'm going to have to take them apart again and see what the problem is. Any ideas?

Anywho, here's some pictures to look at. Just look at that pre-springs wheel gap! frown.gif

And finally:

The other night I threw my summer tires on, got an alignment, and today I went for a "I'm finally lowered" photoshoot tongue.gif Unfortunately the car isn't as clean as these shots might suggest, I had to photoshop out some rust that was ruining the pictures frown.gif Once the weather warms up a little bit, I will be treating the rust along the rockers (Once again) and throwing some POR 15 or something similar on them. This should hopefully be the last winter this car will see so I'm hoping that will put an end to that rust.

Overall I'm very happy with the drop and the fitment, other than the fact that I have some fender rubbing happening when going over big bumps with passengers. It's not bad enough for me to be worried but I may end up bringing the spacers down a notch, try and rolling the fenders a little more, or adjusting the camber a little bit.

Here's some more pictures to look at.

There's a LOT more where those came from on my Photobucket in case you're interested for some reason.

Well, that's it for now...

Posted by: Box Apr 1, 2015 - 4:28 PM

Yay more low! Someone else recently had a similar issue where the rear struts wouldn't tighten up, apparently there's some kind of spacer that's supposed to be there.

Yeah it was strange, I never got these supposed spacers with the mounts. I'm surprised I hadn't heard of that problem until now...oh well, washers works just as well. tongue.gif

I do need skirts! Unfortunately I'm very broke right now haha, I'll be starting work for the summer again at the end of April so I may get in touch with you then! Unless you want to hold onto them for me until then... rolleyes.gif

Posted by: PegGTS Apr 3, 2015 - 3:49 PM

Well today I took out the front struts and had a look at them to try and find out why I was getting a clunking sound. After reading a few threads of people with a similar problem, I found out that I didn't have the arrows on the struts pointing outwards like they should have been. Aligned those, put everything back together, and NO MORE NOISE!

Now she rides beautifully, no noise whatsoever! (Other than the fender rubbing tongue.gif) It's amazing how much of a difference the new struts and springs make, especially since the old struts were pretty screwed lol. Handles like a brand new car again smile.gif

In other news, I had to swap back over to my winter tires again today. For the 3rd time this year. I hate this city.

Posted by: jordisonjr Apr 3, 2015 - 7:39 PM

Was just about to comment about the arrow being the culprit, Guess that's not needed now haha.

Posted by: PegGTS Apr 3, 2015 - 7:51 PM

Haha yeah it's not very obvious that the arrow is meant to go outwards, honestly it just looks like a part number or something tongue.gif Glad it was just that though and not something else.

Come to think of it, it was actually one of your threads that I was reading through laugh.gif

Yea, I also learned the hardway of doing it wrong, and had to basically do a strut/spring job twice :unamused:

Anyways, not much to update since I've been so busy with school.

Plans once I'm done exams are to roll the rear fenders a little more and play with the front fender liners to try and get rid of all my rubbing, hopefully pick up a set of skirts, get my wheel fixed, and try out a little something on the wheels. I'm also looking into getting the cracks in my hood repaired pretty soon.

Brilliant read, Ive been glued to this all evening. WOW, how much do you love your car - well done!

Love the black wheels so much...but, not the green ones lol. Fantastic job!!

Thanks man! She's come a long way and lots of work put in, and unfortunately things have taken a turn for the worse this weekend.

Friday I noticed my engine started making a slight ticking noise. Didn't think much of it at the time, thought it could have something loose along the exhaust. Sunday rolls around and the ticking has gotten a lot louder. I finally decided that it was time to investigate and realized that this was definitely no exhaust rattle. It was coming from the engine...great. Between 2500-3500 RPM you could hear a fairly loud knocking sound coming from the engine. Did a bit of diagnosis and found out that pulling out the first spark plug wire caused the sound to stop. Great.

Now I've been driving it to and from work this week since I've had no choice and it's been getting worse. I'm no engine expert so I had a few people have a listen and they all seem to come to the conclusion that it's
a rod... thumbsdown.gif

Tonight, I took my car to my uncle to have a look at it and he said it could be a rod but I'll have to pull the pan so he can have a look and find out for sure. On my way home, she was bogging down like crazy and barely able to drive. Stalled once when trying to make a left turn into traffic...that was a little scary lol. Got her home and parked it in the garage where it will rest for now.

Poor Celi frown.gif

Posted by: PegGTS May 14, 2015 - 10:07 PM

Well I pulled the oil pan off last night and I must say that was a huge pain to do just for a simple job like that. Anyways when I pulled it off it didn't look good in there, lots of metal shavings. Gonna have a look at her tomorrow and try and see what happened.

http://s1334.photobucket.com/user/PegGTS/media/IMAG2049_zpswocezzr1.jpg.html

Posted by: Box May 14, 2015 - 11:14 PM

While you have the pan off check the rod caps for slack. Though with that kind of debris it looks as if something just outright broke.

Posted by: JDUB May 14, 2015 - 11:42 PM

where did u install the washers because I have the similar sound, if I installed a rear strut bar would that solve the issue? thanks man

Just underneath the strut mount top nut. The nut was running out of thread on mine so it wasn't tightening all the way. Threw a couple washers on underneath it and it was good to go. Check your top mount nuts first and if they're still pretty loose then that's probably your issue. If not then it could be something else.

Posted by: PegGTS May 20, 2015 - 10:25 PM

Well with the engine dead, here's the ultimatum:

- Replace the engine with a 3S.

- Replace the engine with another 5S (There are pretty much none available locally or anywhere close so it would have to be bought from across the country).

- Part the car out and scrap it.

For the work and money I'd put in swapping another 5S in I'd rather put in a little extra money and go for a 3S, but that's also quite a bit of money and still doesn't guarantee that I will have a running car if I run into issues (keeping in mind this is my daily and only car).

As far as parting it out goes, that's my last option and of course my least favourite. If it comes to that I may have to do it but I won't even get all that much money back from parting it out and that's what really sucks.

Anyways, I've got some thinking to do.

Posted by: Chanassa May 20, 2015 - 11:15 PM

I hope you will be able to fix this. Im thinking a 3S is a very good choice, but I see your points as well.

Posted by: Box May 21, 2015 - 4:18 AM

Compare the cost and risk associated with the BEAMS swap to selling your car and getting next to nothing since it doesn't run, and then buying another car hoping nothing is wrong with its drive-train. Plus haven't you already done suspension etc... with it?

Another option is finding where in the U.S. is closest to you and searching that area for a 5S, they're a dime a dozen here.

Posted by: jordisonjr May 21, 2015 - 9:25 PM

Let me know if you plan to part out laugh.gif but hope it doesn't come to that.

Posted by: PegGTS May 22, 2015 - 11:08 PM

I'm hoping it doesn't come to that either but I'll let you know if it does haha tongue.gif

So the other day I was almost committed to a 3S swap and actually had a 4th gen 3S-GTE on hold at a shop in Calgary. Did some thinking over the past couple days and realized that since this my daily car as well as my only car, I decided that I should pick something up that I know is running and healthy rather than gambling on buying an engine online.

So now I'm looking at a couple Camrys to see if I can pick up a cheap one and swap engines.

Posted by: The_enD May 23, 2015 - 1:19 AM

I would buy a cheap runner up and start on my project swap. Afterwards sell the beater... or keep it, if it is cheap to maintain and pay taxes, you never know when you will need a second car or your project needs a few days off the road once done.

Ah yes, just remembered:

QUOTE
The 5S-FE was available in several variations each being distinguished by the valve cover design. The first gen, introduced in the 1990–1992 Celica GT/GT-S and MR2, had a power rating of 130 hp and 144 lbs-ft/torque. the second Gen was introduced in 1993 with the fifth Gen Celica ST184, and continued on throughout the sixth Gen Celica ST204. The second gen was also used in the MR2 (SW21) and Toyota Camry/Scepter (XV10) series and had a power output of 135 hp and 145 lbs-ft/torque. It had slightly less aggressive cams, no cold start injector, a knock sensor, and more aggressive tuning to give it slightly more power. In states that had adopted California state emissions the 5S-FE was rated at 130 hp and 145 lbs-ft/torque due mainly to emission equipment used in order to meet the emissions regulations of those states. The 3rd Gen was the last 5S-FE engine to be produced and was used in the 1997–2001 Camry XV20 and 1999–2001 Camry Solara; however, from 1996 onwards, the engine received a crank angle sensor instead of a cam angle sensor for a smoother idle. From 1997 to 1999 the engine produced 133 hp at 5,200 rpm and 147 lbs-ft/torque at 4,400 rpm. From 2000 to 2001, the engine received modest improvements to increase power output to 136 hp at 5,200 rpm and 150 lbs-ft/torque at 4,400 rpm. The 5S-FE was replaced in all applications by the 2.4 L 2AZ-FE.

California specification 1994-1996 5S-FEs in the Celica and Camry used air-assisted, 250 cc injectors, and sequential fuel injection for reduced emissions over the grouped (2+2) firing scheme. The 1994-1995 MR2 did not receive this change, nor did Camrys/Celicas in federal emissions states.

Camry 5S-FEs have a counter-rotating balance shaft assembly to reduce noise, vibration, and harshness. They reduce the 2nd order vibrations common to 4-cylinder engines by spinning at two-times the crankshaft speed. The 1994-1999 Celica and 1991-1995 MR2 5S-FEs lack these balance shafts, so any 5S-FE engine with balance shafts likely came from a Camry.

In 1997, for the fourth-generation Camry, the 5S-FE was updated for the last time. The engine received a direct ignition system with external camshaft and crankshaft sensors. This system used a wasted-spark setup, and the coils were complete with integrated igniters. The engine did not use a typical coil-on-plug setup, but rather two coil/igniter assemblies mounted near cylinder four, and provided spark via normal high-tension cords ("spark plug wires"). This change means that the 1997-2001 Camry 5S-FE no longer had a distributor mounting hole and could be used with older 5S-FEs without swapping the heads.

The 1997-1999 Camry 5S-FE continued with the air-assisted, 250 cc injectors. The Camry 5S-FE also had a factory 4-to-1 header design - in Federal form, it had no pre-catalyst, although the California version did replace the collector design of the Federal version with a warm-up pre-catalyst for reduced cold start emissions.

For 2000 Toyota removed the air-assisted injectors and moved to superfine atomization (~50 micrometers), 12-hole, 235 cc injectors manufactured by Denso. They are of a different design, and required a change in the cylinder head casting.

For 2001 Toyota started fitting factory MLS (multi-layered steel) head gaskets and other metal gaskets layered with Viton to engines, including the 5S-FE. MLS head gaskets require cylinder head and cylinder block resurfacing on older engines to ensure proper sealing; consequently, MLS head gasket did not supersede the old composite head gasket.

The 1994-1999 Celica 5S-FE was not updated with these changes, and continued to be driven by a distributor and the older electronic control system and injectors. Any used engine marked as a 1997-2001 Camry 5S-FE with a distributor is a Celica 5S-FE or older Camry 5S-FE.

Thanks for that info Box! There's a 96 Camry with 220k kms for sale for $500 that I'm gonna go take a look at soon.

I think I will swap a 5S in for now then buy a beater after the summer and park the Celica for the winter.

You're welcome. Just wanted to make sure you got exactly what you needed to make life as easy as possible.

Well I went and looked at a 94 Camry with a 5S with 133k kms today as a possible donor car for the Celica. This thing was stupid clean and in such good shape, I couldn't even bring myself to rip the engine out of it. I put a deposit down on it and should be picking it up on the weekend. It shouldn't take much if anything to get it safetied so I will do that and drive it for now and park the Celica while I look for another engine for it.

I am now the proud owner of 2 white 1994 Toyotas tongue.gif

I wish! Probably going to just swap another 5S in because I'm a broke university student tongue.gif

Not much progress on the car lately. Pulled up the carpets and found plenty of nasty rust on the driver's side. In the next few days I will be cutting out some of the floor and welding in some new metal and covering it in POR 15. Getting that done while the car is down.

Other than that, a couple weeks ago I dipped my summer wheels gold. I had already bought the dip to do it before my car died so I figured I might as well do the wheels too while I have down time. Here's how the car is sitting as of now in the garage:

Posted by: PegGTS Jul 8, 2015 - 11:24 PM

Haven't gotten too much done with the car since I've been so busy with work and fixing a few things on the Camry all while trying to save up for a new engine. So lately I've just been tackling the rusted driver's side floor.

It started with this, a nasty rust hole where the drain hole should have been in the driver's side floor.

http://s1334.photobucket.com/user/PegGTS/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMAG2073_zpsjkwxi9qj.jpg.html

So I pulled the carpet back, chipped away at the deadening crap on top of the floor and proceeded to cut out all the bad metal.

http://s1334.photobucket.com/user/PegGTS/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMAG2094_zpsye5ovn2p.jpg.html
http://s1334.photobucket.com/user/PegGTS/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMAG2095_zpsxdgpmrvu.jpg.html

And this is after cutting out all the bad stuff and hitting the rest with a wire wheel, excuse the crappy low light cell phone shots...

http://s1334.photobucket.com/user/PegGTS/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMAG2103_zpsiyox7oth.jpg.html

Sprayed some rust inhibitor on the surface rust and let it sit and do it's magic. You can see the pile of rusted crap on the floor through the hole tongue.gif

http://s1334.photobucket.com/user/PegGTS/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20150708_180824_zpskvnrfgbp.jpg.html

Here's the patch panel I had made up.

http://s1334.photobucket.com/user/PegGTS/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20150708_180920_zpsqorikin1.jpg.html

And here it is sitting in the floor, waiting to be welded in.

http://s1334.photobucket.com/user/PegGTS/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20150708_180954_zpsfrjne8mj.jpg.html

Once I get that welded in, I'm going to clean the floor up a little bit more and try and get as much of that surface rust off as possible, then POR 15 the whole floor, and it'll be (almost) good as new! Sure beats spending over $700 on a new floor pan tongue.gif

Posted by: PegGTS Jul 30, 2015 - 12:56 PM

Update time!

So I got a patch welded into the floor and will be going over the top with POR 15 when I get the car back in my garage. Will update with pictures when I can.

ALSO, I have a replacement 5S on the way! It's coming from a nearby city and should be here in the next couple days! 165k kms on the clock.

Posted by: jordisonjr Jul 30, 2015 - 4:28 PM

Where'd you snag that from? Good find. Going to keep the camry now too?

Posted by: PegGTS Jul 30, 2015 - 6:10 PM

Girlfriend's dad works for Winnipeg Honda and he got it through one of his customers for a really good price. Couldn't pass it up. Unfortunately I don't think I'll be able to afford to keep both cars since I'll be starting school again and not working so I'll probably end up selling the Camry. Know anybody looking? tongue.gif

Posted by: Box Jul 30, 2015 - 6:36 PM

Yay on finding a new motor!

Well if you're not doing anything with the Camry but basic maintenance just use it for school/work and make the Celica into a fun weekend car and maybe start autocross and the like with it.

Posted by: kloudkicka Jul 30, 2015 - 8:22 PM

Nice find, and i second what box said, camry =daily, celica=pleasure

Posted by: sircalebwhite Jul 30, 2015 - 8:57 PM

Agree also! But maybe 5sgte?!

Posted by: PegGTS Jul 30, 2015 - 9:40 PM

I'm still debating whether I should keep the Camry or not. I'll see how much money I have saved up by the end of the summer and if I'll have enough to survive until the spring when I'm done school again tongue.gif

This engine would definitely be a good 5SGTE candidate though.

Posted by: sircalebwhite Aug 1, 2015 - 1:39 AM

I know as soon as I take the engine out of my celi the build begins! Hoping to autocross it in the next year or 2.

Got my engine today! Had it shipped to my work since we had a forklift and I'll be bringing it home tomorrow. Another 5SFE with 165k kms on the clock, not bad. Any preventative maintenance I should do with it before I put it in?

I'd go ahead and do timing, water pump, and perhaps the oil pump if it hasn't been noted when it was last done.

Posted by: PrimeLuxeZ Aug 7, 2015 - 11:53 PM

I would also do the front and rear main seals, and give it a good degrease, and power wash. Maybe check the thermostat as well?
I had bought a used engine and I found a partial thermostat sitting in the housing.

Posted by: sircalebwhite Aug 12, 2015 - 5:37 PM

Seals for sure. One thing my previous owner didn't do when installing the new engine in my Celica was he obviously did nothing to it prior to dropping it in. Now I have many oil leaks at every bad place to have one apart from the valve cover gasket.

Posted by: Box Aug 12, 2015 - 5:42 PM

Yep seals and thermostat would be good too. Any newer/better parts off your old engine like maybe spark plugs and wires or header for example would swap over too. The engine does look pretty clean from the pictures though.

Posted by: Celica_MKVI Aug 13, 2015 - 1:17 PM

Toyota typically offers a complete gasket kit for their engines, but I do not see one listed for the 5S-FE. Aside from what has already been mentioned above, if you really want to clean up everything, you may want to do the head gasket. If you go that route, since the head will be off, do the valve stem seals, spark plug seals and valve cover gasket.

I guess I can update this a bit.

Been extremely busy lately with life and other things so my car has kinda been on the backburner for a while. Here and there I've been slowly taking the engine apart and getting ready to take it out. While doing that I've also been putting the interior back together slowly and working on the surface rust on the driver's side rocker panel.

But tonight I FINALLY got the engine out and it's such a relief. I was having a lot of trouble with the driver's side axle but after asking Daniel (richee) for advice he told me I could just pull the whole thing out with the axle, which is what I ended up doing. I'm glad to finally have one step out of the way.

Here's some pictures:

Got the floor patch welded in and sealed

http://s1334.photobucket.com/user/PegGTS/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20150809_162216_zpskpsvcohf.jpg.html

Then I used POR 15 on the whole front floor to seal it in

Woooo broken engine out!

Posted by: PegGTS Sep 4, 2015 - 12:48 AM

So I got the interior back together for the most part the other night, just gotta put the pssenger side panels back in once I get the wiring harness back through the firewall.

http://s1334.photobucket.com/user/PegGTS/media/IMG_20150830_225613_zps6785l3rd.jpg.html

I also got the new engine on the engine stand and changed the timing belt and swapped everything I needed over from the old engine. Once everything was swapped over I got the clutch and transmission on the new engine and dropped it all in! Bolted up the side motor mounts for now, I have yet to figure out the mess of the wiring harness that's waiting for me.

That's all the progress for now, hopefully I'll get everything done in the next week or two and she'll be up and running again soon!

Degreased the engine bay a bit to prep it for the engine.

Before:

After:

Posted by: PegGTS Sep 14, 2015 - 1:08 AM

Well I got the car running tonight! So here's a bit of an update.

After getting the engine in I went to bolt up the rear motor mount and realized that I had actually crushed it and the bracket as I was putting the engine in so out it came again. I took the rear mount and bracket out and straightened it out as best I could and put it back on. Dropped the motor back in and made sure it was lined up this time.

http://s1334.photobucket.com/user/PegGTS/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20150903_233609_zpsth0lo10i.jpg.html

Swapped the valve cover with my original one which I had painted wrinkle red (The front didn't wrinkle very much) and got most of the hard parts back on. Laid the wiring harness in and got to work hooking everything back up. Had some trouble hooking up a few vacuum lines which I forgot to mark, asked around on the ol' Facebook and found out they were for the idle up control valve on the power steering pump. Had a look at the pump and the nipples where the lines should go were broken off, so I capped them off for now until I can replace the valve.

http://s1334.photobucket.com/user/PegGTS/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20150907_204929_zps7cqnbk0f.jpg.html

Also while I was putting the engine back in I found a strange motor mount sitting in my garage and couldn't figure out what it was for. Back to Facebook again and Dustin told me it was an MR2 motor mount, so at least now I know what kind of car the motor is out of! tongue.gif

Finally got everything back on and threw my vanity plate on just because lol. My brother had taken my battery to use in his 4Runner so I had to borrow a Honda battery from my girlfriend's dad. It felt like such a shame to be using a Honda battery in a Toyota laugh.gif

http://s1334.photobucket.com/user/PegGTS/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20150912_162649_zps7e0ugpyg.jpg.html

Saturday I filled up the fluids and tried starting it for the first time. It turned over, but just didn't want to fire up for some reason. Thinking it could have been the distributor, I swapped it out for my original one and still nothing. I made sure it was set at TDC on the compression stroke and that the distributor rotor was pointing towards the #1 spark plug wire. Then today we tested to see if there was spark and there wasn't anything. We couldn't figure out why we weren't getting any spark and we were all scratching our heads. Here's a video of what it was doing:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGtY5gbQTT4

Then as we were all sitting there trying to find out what it could be, I had a look behind the intake manifold and saw something...a ground wire. Turns out it was the main harness ground which I somehow completely forgot to bolt down. I was probably working on it late one night and was too tired to even notice it. So I bolted that in, tested for spark and there it was! Put everything back together and tried starting it and it fired right up! biggrin.gif

That was probably the most relieving moment ever. To know that I was finally (mostly) done and that I could get the car back on the road again in time for a local end of year car show!

I just have to get a timing light and set the ignition timing although it does seem to run very well as of now, almost no issues so far. Here's a video of it running, it's really loud since I had the exhaust unbolted haha tongue.gif

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=18qEPYHYCGY

Now all I need to do is install my stainless steel brake lines and she's good to go! Can't wait smile.gif

Posted by: PegGTS Sep 14, 2015 - 11:07 PM

Didn't install the braided lines yet, figured I'd get it up and running first then worry about that

So tonight we set the ignition timing. I found that it should be set to about 10 BTDC but after doing a bit of research I found a lot of people saying they were able to squeeze a bit more power and MPG by setting it to about 12-14 BTDC so that's where it's sitting now.

Then we bled the brake system and got her back on the ground. I took it out for a quick drive around the block to test everything out. Didn't go too far since its not insured lol but from what I could tell everything seemed to be running well! No issues so far.

Tomorrow I'll go and get about a month of temporary insurance just to last me until the winter when it will get parked. Can't wait to start driving it again!

Got the car insured this morning and drove it to school and work. So far no issues other than the rear motor mount I believe. It seems to be shot, when I start up the car you can hear a fairly decent knocking sound coming from underneath and at low RPMs you can feel it too. When we were putting the engine in we did notice it was a little torn but at the time we just said screw it because we just wanted to get it done and make sure it was running lol. I'm not too worried about it right now, the engine isn't going anywhere tongue.gif Other than that, everything seems great!

Also washed it for the first time in about 4 months, my god that thing was dusty. As I was washing it I also noticed that a lot of the paint on the passenger side is cracking and flaking off. Must not have been prepped well enough so sometime soon I'll redo that.

Gotta replace those front bumper bolts! I guess I also never mentioned the decal on my spoiler...given the state my car was in for the past 4 months I think it was only appropriate haha. Let's just say it's the only decal my girlfriend approves of tongue.gif

If the rust spot is isolated and not too big you can cut it all out and back the hole with fiberglass, then fill it with Bondo Glass before topping with regular Bondo and proceeding with primer and paint etc... Not really the ideal method, but it's easier than welding in patches and being you plan to replace the door anyway it'll at least hold you over.

Yeah I work at an automotive body shop supply store and can get the supplies to do it pretty cheap. Ideally I would like to get a new door but finding one locally will be pretty tough.

Then yesterday this happened frown.gif Oh well, I still have the Camry to drive for now anyways. That's why I took it out of storage so early.

Haven't done much with the car so far, although I did get my side skirts last week! They even still have the stock seals around the top and clear protective vinyl. Did a test fit of them and I can't wait to get them on smile.gif

I also installed Eibach camber bolts in the front to hopefully stop the fronts from rubbing on bumps.

So funny story tongue.gif Recently the flex pipe started leaking and the car was pretty loud. Thought it might have been the header gasket so I unbolted the exhaust pipe from the header but the gasket seemed fine. I was going to check the manifold gasket but then I got busy and never got a chance to get around to it. I've been driving around open header for the past couple weeks...although I usually just take the Camry because it's way too loud lol. Anyways, the other night I was driving to a friend's place and heard some clunking coming from the front and then something fell. Looked behind me and my exhaust pipe from the header with the flex pipe completely broke off and fell out behind me, van behind me had to evade it lol. Pulled over and a guy walking down the street had picked the pipe up and gave it to me.

So now the car is at my uncle's place getting a new flex pipe welded on rolleyes.gif

Here's the skirts after hosing them down. The driver's side is a little rough towards the bottom but you can barely even notice when they're on the car.

Thanks man and thanks so much for the skirts! Can't wait to get them fully mounted, they'll complete the look!

So I got a new flex pipe welded in yesterday and the car is much quieter now. It's actually quite a bit quieter now than it was when I originally had the exhaust done, which leads me to believe that the flex pipe had been leaking ever since the exhaust was done, and just finally gave out completely.

Also I'm pretty certain my calipers are sticking, because I was stopped on a decent hill on my way to work this morning, in neutral without the brake pressed, and the car wasn't rolling. And when I drive for a little while, I can feel the car slow down really quick as soon as I let the gas off, and sometimes it has trouble even getting up to 80km/h. If I turn the engine off and let it sit for a minute then turn it back on it seems to fix it for a little bit but it comes right back.

Posted by: PegGTS May 17, 2016 - 6:25 PM

So about that brake issue, I ended up tracking it down to the master cylinder, replaced that last week and it's good to go again!

Other than that, I've been cleaning it up and getting it ready for a show that was on Sunday. Did some rust repair and painting, clay barred the whole car, and tried to buff the hood out. The hood seems to be beyond buffing at this point, it's gonna need to be refinished.

Ground down the rust, applied rust inhibitor, some POR 15, a bit of body filler, and sanded down the filler.

Also installed my side skirts the other day, removed the mudflaps and front windshield banner and I'm extremely happy with how the car looks now! Here's some shots of it at a local car meet!

Oh yeah and I put the car up for sale yesterday. Just a feeler at the moment and seeing what interest there is for it, but I can't afford 2 cars at the moment, especially not one that sucks all my money frown.gif

If you feel the Celica is trustworthy again with the replacement engine might consider selling the Camry, being you pretty much stole it you could make a good profit on it and I'd imagine the market for the Camry is probably a little bigger. I just see you regretting selling the Celica after you've put so much time and money into it getting it how you want it. I still regret selling mine from time to time, but seeing it meander around town from time to time exactly how I left it helps since the kid needed a reliable car.

Oh as far as the hood goes if you do recoat it make sure the epoxy resin is UV resistant, and it probably wouldn't hurt to wipe it down with AeroSpace 303 protectant whenever you wash the car.

I have no doubts the engine is trustworthy, it's just the rest of the car mostly. Always seems to be something going wrong and I just can't really afford to keep up with it, being a broke student and all lol.

At this point I just feel like I will never get back what I put into it so I might as well sell it while I can. I'll probably part out all the parts I have on it and sell the car as is, I would get a lot more that way. I was actually planning on selling both the Camry and the Celica and picking something a little newer up that I can drive all year round with no issues. I'm not selling it just this moment, I still want to drive it around for most of the summer and enjoy it a little longer, but for sure later this summer or next spring I will be.

I will definitely regret selling it and I really don't want to do it, but it almost needs to be done unfortunately.

That's understandable. Being you're in Canada you could get a GT-Four and swap all your parts to it. wink.gif At the very least I guess you have time to think about what you want that's in your budget. There are a few early 00's cars that'd be fun and reliable dailies.

if only we were closer. a hood swap would be in order haha

I wish haha! I'm going to try and give the hood a wetsand, then buff and polish and see if that helps any.

A younger kid and his dad came to look at the car today. Asked a few questions about it and took it for a test drive. When they got back I asked how it was and the dad just said "I shouldn't have let him take it for a drive" because the kid really liked it haha. He's interested in the car with all mods on it. Was planning on parting it out but if he wants to pay the extra money I can keep them on for him. I'm just worried he won't understand the value of some of the parts. Oh well, if he's willing to pay a little extra I'll throw them in for him. I estimated all the parts, not including wheels and tires, to be about $1300 USD, which is almost $1700 CAD...

Posted by: Box May 18, 2016 - 7:45 PM

You could always do a walkaround and point out what parts are what and how they're special etc... Selling to someone that really likes and wants the car helps with letting go.

Posted by: PegGTS May 20, 2016 - 2:30 PM

So the kid wants to buy the car as is with everything on it, I sent him a list of all the parts with prices I was going to sell them for and he said he wants everything. We came to an agreement on a price and he said he's just waiting for a guy to pay him for his truck then he'll have the money, so this looks to be it...definitely very sad frown.gif

So I guess you're going to meander around with the Camry for now? Any idea as to what you're going to get next?

Yeah probably just daily the Camry for now and keep checking local classifieds in case anything pops up. I'd like something a little more practical for the time being to daily, something early to mid 2000's. Gotta be manual though, maybe even a 5 speed Corolla, who knows. There's actually a pretty nice 2006 Lancer Ralliart up for sale right now for a good price, I might go take a look at it.

Took the Celi to my gf's dad to take a look at and see what it needs. Found out the passenger side axle bearing was completely shot, surprised I couldn't even notice it while driving until I saw it on the lift...there's nothing left of it.

So last night I picked up a new axle and got to work on replacing it. It was going well until I tried getting it out of the wheel hub, it wouldn't come out. I tried unbolting the LCA to make it a little easier and of course I snapped the inner bolt.

http://s1334.photobucket.com/user/PegGTS/media/IMG_20160525_212227_zpsdtg5qv5j.jpg.html

Luckily I was able to drill the stud out pretty easily and then I was able to move the hub enough to get the axle out. This is what was left of the bearing:

http://s1334.photobucket.com/user/PegGTS/media/20160525_211553_zpsso8tsgij.jpg.html

Couldn't get the bracket off the old axle because the race from the bearing was stuck inside of it. Had to slam the dust shield a bit to get it off but the race was still stuck in there, so I gave it to my gf's dad along with the new axle to take it apart at work and put the bracket on the new axle because I didn't have the tools for it. So tonight I'll get it all back in and together.

The kid says he should have the money for the car this weekend so this might be the last week with it kindasad.gif

Last night I finished installing the axle and it's good as new again. Although when I put my wheels back on I had really bad positive camber, then found out I had my camber bolts installed in the wrong direction. Fixed both sides and it's all good now. Probably the last time I'll work on it, the guy is supposed to come tomorrow and pick the car up. frown.gif

I'll be nice and offer a hug, a manly one of course. At least it went to someone that really wanted it and seems like will give it a good home. Which I know you won't feel like it for a few days, but now you can start on the exciting and frustrating adventure that is shopping for another car.

Yeah I'm sure the kid will enjoy it, he lives about an hour and a half away so I probably won't see it again though. For now I'll just drive the Camry and save some money, probably pick up something a little newer next spring.

Tell me about it. Didn't want to but it had to be done, it's definitely nice having a little more financial freedom now.

Oh and I shipped your bezel last night, let me know when you get it!

Posted by: cheela May 31, 2016 - 10:25 AM

you're gonna fall into celica withdrawal pretty soon...

camry is comfy but no fun at all. I get it when I drive my matrix for too long.

I already have...the Camry is so boring and feels 100x slower than the Celica even though they both have the 5S. A loaf of bread would be more fun to drive lol

Sell the Camry and buy a first gen Impreza with awd. Practical and fun.

Posted by: Box Jun 1, 2016 - 1:24 PM

^Great minds think alike. tongue.gif I was going to say since you're in Canada and want something useful as a car a Subaru would probably be ideal. Get an Impreza Coupe, do ittttttttttttt.

Posted by: PegGTS Jun 1, 2016 - 4:05 PM

Yeah that would be alright but they're pretty expensive. Maybe if I save up enough this summer I might pick one up.
