Would like some guidance on cleaning the EGR valve.

From what I can tell, there are three points where the EGR is secured. Two bolts on the right and left. I removed these easily with my socket wrench (12 mm). For the bottom, I can't seem to get any leverage to loosen the EGR valve from the base. Any help on what tool I should use? There is very little space to work in this area (between the engine and the firewall) and its looking to be a serious pain to get the thing off!

I am trying to clean the EGR valve as I've recently received a CEL that pointed back to lack of air flow from the EGR. I've heard from other members on this forum that carbon build up can cause this to occur.

I haven't checked or done it yet but I'm thinking about doing this to my car soon. Anyone want to give me a heads up advice before I attempt it?

Do NOT attempt to take your EGR tube off from the manifold side. You'll end up breaking your EGR flange like I did.

Do it this way, for it's the easiest and least likely to break stuff:

  • Remove your airbox hose from the throttle body and move it out of the way
  • Loosen the bolts on your throttle body and move it out of the way (You'll also need to take the throttle cable out of the linkage/butterfly)
  • Locate the lower tube nut where the EGR tube goes into the head and spray some PB blaster on it
  • Using an open ended wrench, loosen the EGR tube


At this point, the EGR (if you still have the two bolts out of the EGR flange) will become free and the whole assembly with tube will swing out and allow you to take it off.

This is why you don't try to take it off from the manifold side:



At this point you can clamp the EGR valve and take the tube off:



I put some ceramic paint on mine to protect it from rotting, red was all I had haha:


Then put it all back after you've cleaned it out with a good carb cleaner, like Berrymans B12 Chemtool smile.gif

And now I desperately need a transmission drain/fill plug. I want to delete mine, and I thought it was harder than this. Thanks.

I originally went at it with a crows foot set and a breaker bar. Heard a snap.. That's why if you look above, I had a Heineken opened haha. Nothing is more depressing than breaking something and having to buy another when you have no money.
