6G Celicas Forums _ My Project _ Green Bullet ST205 Re-Born

Posted by: bsamps4 Jan 8, 2011 - 11:24 PM

Hello All! I'm excited to announce that I too will be joining the small percentage of 3sgte swapped Celica's. I purchased my 3sgte engine clip yesterday "Friday", and will receive it this coming Wednesday. I'll start my swap the last week of January due to accrued vacation that I've earned at work. In my short time on 6gc I've spent my time reading up on similar swaps so that I could learn as much as possible. I don't think i'll be able to be up in running in two days like some of the gear-heads on this site, but I certainly hope that I have the privilege to post, and work with some of the masterminds that make this site so great.

The Car:

94 Celica GT. Currently with 224,000 miles on it. The 5s still runs like a top, but I originally purchased this car to complete a 3sgte swap. I was given the privilege of driving a JDM 3rd Gen Celica RC (right hand drive...the whole 9), and I've been in love since then.

I've owned two integra's. One GS-R, and the other a GS. I learned to love Honda, but have come to realize that Toyota is WAY better. I love my car and can't wait to get started.

I'll start updates and pics as soon as I get my clip.

Please feel free...I value your feedback, and understand that I know a fraction of the information that some of the great minds on this site know!

Awesome bro - welcome to the dark side!!!
Did you get a 2nd gen RC or a 3rd gen WRC? I'm confused by what you wrote.
Expect gremlins but have the balls to work through them and it'll all be sooooo worth it! If you need any advice - please feel free to hit me up anytime.
Post tons of pics and updates

Posted by: Smaay Jan 8, 2011 - 11:30 PM

awesome, post lots of pictures and updates

Posted by: bsamps4 Jan 8, 2011 - 11:40 PM

hahahaha....No car project goes without the necessary GREMLINS....Murphy's law is a b****. I'm sure i'll be asking tons of questions, but I really appreciate all of the early support. If there is anything I can do for any of you guys please feel free to ask. I'm sure I'll have lots of parts for sale!!!

Posted by: bsamps4 Jan 9, 2011 - 12:35 AM

Ooops...forgot to add. It's a 3rd gen RC

Posted by: DEATH Jan 9, 2011 - 12:38 AM

therre is no 3rd gen RC
it's either 2nd gen RC or 3rd gen WRC

Posted by: bsamps4 Jan 9, 2011 - 10:14 AM

Haha wow shows how much I know. Should be a wrc. Anyone wanna help explain all of the differences? All I know is that this engine is a 94+, has a top mount water-cooler, ct20b turbo, and single-runner plenum.

Posted by: presure2 Jan 9, 2011 - 10:35 AM

the search function and stickys are your friend.
there are quite a few threads that explain the diffrences between the 2nd, 3rd and 4th gen motors, and the normal 2nd and 3rd gen and rc/wrc versions.

Posted by: bsamps4 Jan 9, 2011 - 1:56 PM

Research complete. Def a 3rd gen. Not a wrc.

GOOD JOB!!!!
It's so refreshing to see someone take that advice and actually run with it and report back - keep that up and your swap will, literally, go far! [Pun intended] biggrin.gif

Now I'm beginning to get nervous....the company shipping my half-cut are having issues with getting the item to me on time. They quoted me a very low price for shipping, which I've already paid, but are now giving me the run around on shipping costs....

Then it also occurred to me....I have a viper alarm with remote start.....and i'm wondering how this is going to impact my swap....

I HATE being nervous.

Part No: Pump GSS-341 & Set Up Kit 400-760
Fits: 91-95 MR2

Description:

Walbro Fuel Pumps are direct replacements and all wiring is a plug in. They flow 255L/HR which is much larger then your stock. The pump is good for up to 400whp.

This is the Walbro pump that i'm going to purchase to use for my swap since the one for the 5s will be insufficient. Anyone see any problems with this part number?

I've also planned on using my stock hood for the time being, and simply using spacers to lift the hood in the back to fit the water to air exchanger.

I've been reading several different threads on the wiring required for the set up....clutch switch, IC Relay, Fuel Pump Relay, and wire extensions. To be honest....this freaks me out. Electrical work is one area where I lack confidence. I learn by doing on-hand work and being shown in person, but all the pictures I've seen so far have led me to more confusion. I'm sure I'll figure it out.

Presure2....your write up on the wiring was wonderful...if you don't mind, I'll likely have a lot of questions for you in the future. I hope this doesn't lead to any kind of headache for you.

With that all said...I just received word from the company shipping my clip, and the item will be shipped today! I ended up having to pay an extra 161 dollars for shipping, which kind of pissed me off, but having the motor, and getting started is very important to me.

Cheers!

Pretty sure he's used to it - we all are. You've got the right idea to be courteous - the best way to do that is to search ten times before you ask one question wink.gif
I'm available to you as a resource also - anything you need to know LMK.

Posted by: bsamps4 Jan 10, 2011 - 10:38 PM

I really appreciate the support. You can't find that on many forums, which is why I decided to go with this forum. I'm just glad that after successfully completing this swap I too will become a valuable resource for people in my current position.

The soon to be patient....

Posted by: Ted95 Jan 10, 2011 - 11:36 PM

sweert deal bro, good luck with the swap!

Posted by: Euphoria Jan 10, 2011 - 11:59 PM

Looks sweet! You should keep it looking fairly stock and sleeperish wink.gif and maybe put some clear lights and JDM tails in later.

Posted by: bsamps4 Jan 11, 2011 - 12:05 AM

Thought I'd do a little something different since I haven't really noticed this on this site.....just a brief history of the evolution of my hobby....feel free to post pics of your early car projects on this thread. It's nice to see what kind of progression those of us have taken to become the people that we are today! (Car Freaks)

I'll try to explain some of it....

The owner of the white integra is a friend of mine....I painted the front half of his car
The black integra is mine...I have very few pictures of it, but the skunk2 intake manifold and the dc header are pictures of small projects on this car
the white silvia is a car that I worked very briefly on, but thought it was sexy, so i'll put it on here.
the red 240 was a car that i removed the engine from...i wanted to create a ka24det, but i was young and couldn't handle the responsibility...the silvia headlights were something that i purchased for that car that never came to be
The latest picture of me is me inside of the engine bay of my current car as i was bolting on the pressure plate (clutch install)

Posted by: Stambo Jan 11, 2011 - 10:37 PM

Bounced around quite a bit from manufacturers i see. Its cool to see people who are interested in all cars and not just certain car makers.

Good luck with the swap there are plenty of people to ask questions if needed!

Posted by: bsamps4 Jan 11, 2011 - 10:47 PM

Haha...very true....one common theme though. They are all Japanese.

Posted by: bsamps4 Jan 12, 2011 - 10:07 AM

Clip arrives today. Will post pics. Stay tuned.

Posted by: bsamps4 Jan 12, 2011 - 10:02 PM

Got it, and here it is!. Already found several pieces that need replacing...ugh.....gotta do it right...

Literally pushed the effing thing down a U-haul ramp. That S*&t was scary!

Posted by: bsamps4 Jan 12, 2011 - 10:27 PM

a few pics of the damaged parts i need now, a shot of the dash, and a cut wiring harness that i have no clue what these wires go to.

Posted by: presure2 Jan 13, 2011 - 7:29 AM

the last pic is body harness...you dont need that to swap.

but the heat exchager for the intercooler looks wasted.

Posted by: bsamps4 Jan 13, 2011 - 9:41 AM

The heat exchanger was in good order in the pictures that caused me tp purchase the item. Disputing with that company now.

Posted by: bsamps4 Jan 14, 2011 - 10:33 AM

Would anyone happen to have a decent heat exchanger laying around???

Posted by: presure2 Jan 14, 2011 - 10:58 AM

you can use a mustang cobra heat exchanger, they are available on ebay all the time, and fit the opening on the celica bumper well.

Posted by: bsamps4 Jan 14, 2011 - 11:06 AM

wait...really?? I just looked. They are very inexpensive! Will the water lines line up? Or is this a custom installation through and through?

Posted by: bsamps4 Jan 14, 2011 - 11:14 AM

presure, what kind of oil cooler would you recommend, since mine is badly damaged?

Posted by: presure2 Jan 14, 2011 - 11:30 AM

the water lines will not line up, but not a big deal, 3/4" ID hose works just fine, and of course you would need to fab up mounting brackets.

which oil cooler are you talking about? the engine oil cooler that is attached to the block?

or the tranny oil cooler thats shown in the pics, or the power steering cooler thats also in your pics?

*UPDATE*

Been really busy at work, but I have been able to put in some time to begin removing items for the swap. It was during the removal that I discovered that then engine that was shipped to me is in fact a WRC engine. The pics below show the progress I've made in removing the cars peripheral systems, but also the anti-lag system. I pulled the spark plugs as well to inspect for any internal damage. Cylinder 3 plug (Which I know has known issues because of the cooling channels) had oil on the threads, but the electrode itself looked fine. The other plugs looked fine. I'll go to Toyota on Tuesday, and get a new valve cover gasket.

Posted by: Stambo Jan 16, 2011 - 9:38 PM

is that a anti lag system?

Posted by: bsamps4 Jan 16, 2011 - 9:40 PM

yea

Posted by: chacha Jan 16, 2011 - 10:56 PM

turn it on

Posted by: bsamps4 Jan 16, 2011 - 10:57 PM

Hahaha....wish I could...i think i'll just hold onto it for decoration wink.gif

Posted by: mkernz22 Jan 17, 2011 - 1:05 AM

you gotta use that anti lag system when you get it man! not much of them around, it's almost a luxury to have it so you should definitely use it biggrin.gif

Posted by: 3WayStunna Jan 17, 2011 - 1:05 AM

Lol, ditch that ABS yo...you dont need it thumbsup.gif

Posted by: ST205WRC Jan 17, 2011 - 2:58 AM

yeah its an anti-lag system that doesnt work. its not worth the time or money to make it work, because it requires a standalone system. not to mention the hell it puts the turbo through. the time and money can be made more useful in other places.

good luck with it progress looks great. you'll love that 3gen. much easier to work with from what ive seen so far.

Posted by: bsamps4 Jan 17, 2011 - 10:23 AM

I had considered getting the ant-lag to work, but did a lot of reading into it....i can't afford to blow turbo's on a weekly basis haha. I'll likely replace the turbo in the future. This one has a tiny bit of shaft play. Pisses me off that there is no rebuild kit for it because I would prefer for it to run like new.

Posted by: Smaay Jan 17, 2011 - 10:48 AM

there are shops that can rebuild your turbo, but for the cost, it might be cheaper to do a replacement or CT27. call ATS and see what they can do with the CT20b. you might get lucky. i do believe that turbonetics can also rebuild the turbo and actually upgrade it at the same time.

Posted by: bsamps4 Jan 17, 2011 - 10:55 AM

ats diesel?

Posted by: bsamps4 Jan 17, 2011 - 7:54 PM

Small update....
Half the wiring harness has been removed, and the ecu has been unmounted. Dash is nearly ready to come out. carpet has been removed.

The list for tonight:
Disconnect power steering
Disconnect a/c
Disconnect throttle cable
Remove dash
Remove downpipe
Remove turbo
Remove turbo manifold

Btw...if you see anything I'm not using, then it's for sale. Make me an offer.

Posted by: presure2 Jan 17, 2011 - 7:58 PM

why are you pulling the dash?

Posted by: bsamps4 Jan 17, 2011 - 8:11 PM

Once ive removed all the parts I need I'll cut the frame up for disposal. Didnt know if anyone would be interested in the dash or the other parts im not using.

Posted by: bsamps4 Jan 18, 2011 - 12:12 PM

Alright
Small Update

I didn't get as much done as I had hoped to last night. I'll post pics later.

I was only able to drain the transmission, remove transmission cooler lines, detach brake booster and several other vacuum lines, pull the ecu, pull harness through firewall, and attempt to remove the passenger side axle.

Any advice on how to remove these damn axles?? They are really in there, or i'm going about this the complete wrong way. Also having trouble removing the downpipe. I can't get to the last bolt holding the heat shield to the downpipe, and after messing around trying to remove the alternator so I could get to it; I decided to call it a night.

Aside from that I should be on schedule to remove the engine from the frame today smile.gif

Posted by: ST205WRC Jan 18, 2011 - 1:52 PM

when you say passenger side are you refering to the left side or the right side? when i pulled my right side axel (driver side cuz im in japan) it came right out with a little bit of leverage and a good pry spot. it gets agravating that Super Strut suspension is very different to mess with.

Posted by: bsamps4 Jan 18, 2011 - 2:28 PM

Yes. Japanese passenger side

Posted by: bsamps4 Jan 18, 2011 - 4:10 PM

I'll keep working on it. There aren't any retaining clips on the axles are there? Im not worried about the side with the mid shaft because that should come loose as soon as i unbolt it. but the axle on the japanese passenger side is really in there. There are two grooves on either side of the axle that i've been sticking my pry bar in to break it loose because it is too tight for me to get my pry bar between the transmission and the back of the axle. when i put my pry bar between the tranny and back of axle it looks like its just damaging the back of the axle.

Posted by: presure2 Jan 18, 2011 - 5:25 PM

both front axles use snap rings to hold them in at the end of the splines.

Posted by: bsamps4 Jan 18, 2011 - 11:21 PM

Got the motor out today!

backside of the huge plug we had to disconnect. it was a pain in the ass.

relays and fuses on the front right relax box that we completely tore down

what that area looks like without fuses mwahaha

just pics while working on it

disconnecting charcoal canister

engine mounts disconnected. motor, trans, exhaust, and subframe are being supported by a jack underneath the mid crossmember

motor sagging out of the bottom.

engine harness backed away from the side rail. i put it on top of the motor.

success

the disaster.

ANYBODY KNOW WHAT THOSE THREE WIRES THAT HAVE BEEN RIPPED FROM THEIR HARNESS GO TO??? I CAN'T FIND THE HARNESS ANYWHERE!!!

Posted by: 3WayStunna Jan 19, 2011 - 2:32 AM

That looks like the Engine/ECu ground....usually connects to the back of the manifold...never seen the actual amount of wires, but i do know that the only "wire(s) that have that type of sheilding around it onthe back side of the engine, is the engine/ecu ground...

anywho, care to chime im with pics of a "still together" one?

Btw if it is the ground the it terminates into a normal ol' connector end that can be bolted down...there wouldnt be any bit more to it than that O- type connector..lol, sorry but my terminology is all messedup today..

nope, thats not the ecu ground, that goes thru the middle of the intake manifold.

looks to me like the map sensor wiring by its location.

::edit::
looking back thru your pics, i see the map sensor attached to the firewall, up till your starting to drop the motor down, then its gone.
did you remove it as you were dropping the motor?
definetly looks like it got pulled out of the back of the plug, possibly while dropping the motor out?

Posted by: bsamps4 Jan 19, 2011 - 9:21 AM

Oh god I hope not. Im certain we disconnected it from the fire wall before dropping the motor. I'm at work now so im going to be antsy all day until I can go home and find what has happened to it.

Posted by: presure2 Jan 19, 2011 - 9:47 AM

i think its either that (my first guess)
or the IAC valve plug.
both are 3 wire sensors.

::EDIT::
i can almost garantee its the map sensor wiring.

the wire colors are the same as the map sensor wiring.

brown=ground
red = 5v
grey/w black = signal

also, i can see the map sensor attached to the intake manifold by the vac line on the top passanger side of the intake, but the plug is not attached.

Posted by: bsamps4 Jan 19, 2011 - 10:05 AM

Should this be any cause for alarm? Should be a fairly easy fix....right?

yup, you should be able to cut and splice in the connector from your stock harness without issue, no biggie.

Posted by: bsamps4 Jan 19, 2011 - 10:14 AM

That's good news. Thanks for your input.

Posted by: bsamps4 Jan 19, 2011 - 8:56 PM

Small Update:

Got the downpipe/remaining exhaust off. Had to push the oil cooler aside just to fit a breaker bar down in there. Needless to say the entire task was full of gremlins, and a complete pain in the a$$.

Upper timing cover, alternator, a/c, and all the associated brackets have been removed.

At the bottom of the catalytic converter there is a plug that bolts in to a bung. This plug has an electrical connector that clips into a harness around where the a/c sits. Any clue what this is, and if there is any need in keeping it?

Also desided that i'm going to get the berk downpipe. I never want to deal with that crap again.

oh, and ps.....timing belt, cam seals, and tensioner look great.

Posted by: ST205WRC Jan 20, 2011 - 1:19 AM

that plug is an EGT sensor i believe, but im not positive so hopefully someone else will chime in on that.

Posted by: presure2 Jan 20, 2011 - 7:42 AM

its a temp sensor for the cat. you can leave it unplugged, it wont throw a code for it.

Posted by: bsamps4 Jan 20, 2011 - 10:07 PM

Just a few pics to coincide with my last update...

Posted by: bsamps4 Jan 20, 2011 - 10:10 PM

Are there any pics/videos of things anyone would like ,e to cover to make my experiences here more like a how-to?

Posted by: purplegt4 Jan 21, 2011 - 5:22 PM

I would still change the timing belt / tensioner / pulleys. Presure2's car had ~34k & mine had ~55k and they both crapped out (they were both '95 I believe). Do it while the motor's out. I'm still waiting on a tensioner from tcbparts.co.uk because lithia toyota didn't have any in stock (mr2 guys grabbed 'em up)

Posted by: 3WayStunna Jan 21, 2011 - 7:54 PM

yea deffo do the timing belt and NEW tensior while the engine is out...i tried to do it once with it in the car, and never again...lol, now i have it worked out where i change out my timing belt whenever i do a clutch job !!!!

Does anyone here know where I could find the repair manual for my model engine? I'm considering rebuilding the whole damn thing. I don't know how many miles are on the engine because the shop i bought it from sold the gauges before I bought it, and none of them could "remember". Its guaranteed under 60k, but I like facts...not guarantees. The motor itself is very clean inside and out so I'm willing to believe that promise, but with a rebuild I'll know for sure.

Posted by: bsamps4 Jan 25, 2011 - 11:45 PM

*UPDATE*

Well I got several things done today. I started tearing into the wiring on the st205 frame so that I could teach myself where/what the wires that are involved in the conversion to the 5s need to go. I learned a lot! When I'm done I'll try to make a really detailed how-to on the wiring. I also removed the transmission from the engine. Doesn't seem like much, but both are equally time consuming.

Can anyone tell me what sensor this is in the last pic? It was hanging right under where the radiator used to go.

Posted by: presure2 Jan 26, 2011 - 7:18 AM

its a temp sensor for the JDM climate control

Posted by: bsamps4 Jan 27, 2011 - 12:14 AM

Not to threadjack and hopefully not off-post, but im surprised this website dosent have the repair manuals up in a sticky or something....Would be great if someone could host them on this site...i cant because im at a work computer and i dont have access to a computer than would provide the means to do it

Another update....I'm sure you guys are tired of this! Trust me...I'll slow down once I'm having to save for all the stuff that I'm going to need!

We tore down the engine today, about the only thing left in it are the pistons, crank, and rods. The head has been removed for machining/reworking. The crank will be removed for polishing and balancing, the rods will be left alone, and the pistons will be replaced with 86.5 Wiseco's. Head is going to have a multi-angle valve job done, new engle springs, ats cam gears, and arp hardware.

The head gasket, combustion chambers, and bottom end are all in beautiful condition.

Can't Wait!

Ingenious way to remove a crank pulley (That bolt was reeeelly tight)

Here are a few pics of the bottom end. It was spotless.

cwm13.gif oil squirters. I didn't know the 3s came with those... do they all have em or just the wrc's?

if so, he is a great guy.

anyway, yea, nothing you can really do with the antilag (unless you wanna replace turbos every few runs..lol) so if you can sell it and recoup some $$ spent, why not?

Yup, it sure was Gary with the 93 alltrac. He told me that he once got to sit in your car when the 5sfte was still in it. I don't know about anyone else on this site, but I would have been so excited if I got that chance. Good advice. I'll put the manifold up for sale.

Alright...I talked with ATS a few days ago about my light build plans. ATS recommended the use of their cam gears, gss 268 in and ex cams, engle valve springs, phenolic intake manifold spacer gasket, and a multi-angle valve job on the stock valves.

For the bottom end: wiseco 86.5, acl bearings, ATS oil pump, rotating assembly balance, polished/balanced stock crank, and stock rods

My goal is 300 hp, and i'd like to maintain daily driveability with the stock ecu. Thoughts? Have i left anything out?

Forgot to mention...i'll be using all ARP hardware, and the ATS 1.2mm headgasket.

Posted by: presure2 Jan 30, 2011 - 3:25 PM

for a 300whp goal the complete build is overkill, but hey, it sets the platform for you to make lots more power reliably down the road.

did you specify to them that your using a 3rd gen motor? never seen them mention the intake manifold spacer for a 3rd gen.

you'll give a little up on the bottom end with the cams, but make nice gains in the higher RPMS, and will really wake the motor up, up top, especially as you upgrade down the road.

sounds like you have a solid plan for a well built longblock. smile.gif

Anybody here ever heard of frozenboost.com? I was considering trying out one of their water to air heat exchangers. Really good price on these, and they are larger than the stock set up. Thoughts or recommendations?

Posted by: Gary Jan 31, 2011 - 2:51 AM

That was me Manny. How are thing up there? And thanks for the kind words. bowdown.gif
Ben,
This is the video of the stock pump I was talking about. No need to upgrade it.

frozenboost/silicone intakes is a good company to work with. Good prices, and very good shipping. All items shipped toan overseas location took aroudnn 6-7 days tops, which is great in my books...

I purchased one of the smaller WTA heat exchangers from them, and it was a good build.Larger than stock, yet slightly shorter.... although the drain switch could be swapped out for something else, everything else with it was great. My intercooler has never been cooler!

Only problem i had was mounting. Had to get creative with that..2 bolts and 2 zipties worked wonders for me...might try something more permanent inthe future though..

Posted by: bsamps4 Jan 31, 2011 - 9:24 AM

Looks great! I think I will go that route.

Gary, that pump is insane. You could fill a fish tank with that thing!

why anyone would buy a setup from ebay, when we have a super reliable source here on the site, who actually owns celicas, and knows exactly what is needed and what isnt, is beyond me.

Pic of the Koyorad. I've got it installed on the 5s. I still need to get new pusher fans so that I can fit the 3s without melting the stock plastic fan shrouds. I'd take a picture of it installed, but the 5s needs a good cleaning first due to coolant all over the engine bay.

you can just trim the shroud a bit to clear the compressor housing, it wont melt.
art (lagos) and others have the same type of rads with no issues, once you trim the shroud.

Got a few things today

ARP Rod Bolts

Rear Main Seal

Distributor Seal

ATS Racing Thermostat 170 degree

Timing Belt

Spark Plug Seal

Valve Cover Seal

Camshaft Seals

More to come. There are so many gaskets I still need to buy.

Posted by: bsamps4 Feb 27, 2011 - 11:31 AM

Cleaned up the heat cover yesterday. This is how it turned out. Going to paint it today after I wash it.

Posted by: bsamps4 Feb 28, 2011 - 6:36 PM

Quick question. Since my compression is being raised from 8.5.1 to 9.1 should I go a spark plug heat range lower? ie/ bkr7eix vs. bkr6eix?

Posted by: TEAMFaint Mar 1, 2011 - 12:00 AM

I am using the NGK BKR7E spark plugs. Have always been recommended these for my gtfours.

Posted by: bsamps4 Mar 4, 2011 - 10:39 AM

So you are running the normal copper plugs? Anybody use platinum or iridium in theirs? And you are sure that a 7 heat range will be fine for raised compression?

Lol, I almost purchased mine from ebay myself, but then I started to notice on multiple auctions they were using the same pics, with labels on them saying actual pic. Obviouslly not the case =P My other issue with the ebay swaps was the price, yea its cheap, but that made me think something was wrong or deceptive about them.

Jim is a great guy for the swaps, where i'm getting mine. Been helpful all the way through and through. Pretty much grabbing everything I need for the swap from him. Go with him if you decide on a 2nd cellie!

Congratz on the swap in progress, can't wait til its done! Using your thread as a guide line for my swap coming up soon.

Posted by: bsamps4 Mar 4, 2011 - 5:05 PM

I appreciate the support. I've been trying to keep the thread updated as best as possible, but the fact is, these types of things are slow going unless you have an awesome job. I wish you the best of luck with your swap as well, and yes JIM is a great reliable source.

Few updates....no pictures....sorry. I will post picks when all is done.

I took the crank out to be cleaned and polished today. Went to toyota to buy more freaking seals, learned that the 3rd gen oil pump is unique, and that I cannot use the high flow one from ATS. (I'll have to figure out how to clean mine without effing it up). At this very moment I am in the process of applying coats of 2000 degree primer and base to my manifold cover, and I'm using the trd bar that I purchased to begin the mock-up (in steel first) of new-affordable aluminum strut tower braces that will accomodate st205 swaps using the stock watercooler. (I'll post pics when my prototype is done)

yup.
if your planning on running a boost controller, you would normally just bypass it, but you can totally remove it and the associated lines, and just leave the plug unplugged without issue.

Well I have a few small updates...

My car got backed into about 2 weeks ago. I just went to see it today at the body shop, and they were successfully able to match 17 year old paint. Broke my heart when it happened because I was afraid that the car would never be the same. Thank god this is a great body shop.

I also bought the intercooler that I'm going to use for my set up. Got a great deal on it locally.

Thanks for the bumper in regards to "block"

Better get to work!

Posted by: bsamps4 Jul 19, 2011 - 12:55 PM

AJ, I hope to have the bumper fitted for the meet in August. It's going to be a TON of work.

Word to the wise:

If anyone is considering doing a gt4 front end conversion you need to try the best you can to get a bumper/hood/fenders in the color of your car, and don't be afraid to spend a little extra for items in great condition. I have a green car, and there are no gt4 bumpers that I have seen in my color.

I've spent just as much on paint supplies as I have on the bumper itself.

Get the right color the first time and spend a little extra for quality.......then you will have spent less in the end.

I will update with pics on the progress of the bumper reformation. Paint/Primer remover, Surface Prep, Adhesion Promotion, Primer, Sanding, Paint, Clear, and Orange Peel Removal.

Peep this! Thanx to TwistedCeli94 for the hood!!!

Can't wait till it's GreenMachine Greeeeeen!!!

Posted by: bsamps4 Jul 28, 2011 - 6:50 PM

Test fit! Lines up quite well. As for the rubber seal that goes between the bumper and hood....how are you guys modifying yours to make it not look ridiculous? Or is there anyone on here with the seal and metal slip cover that goes over the bumper lip that is willing to sell theirs?

Posted by: bsamps4 Sep 16, 2011 - 9:35 PM

A lot of progress has been made! The hood and bumper are nearly paint worthy! I've also got a few items that are on the way. My car had to be sent back to the body shop from previous repairs made in March, but I'm finally getting back on track.

If anyone would like the CURRENT Toyota part numbers for the items I've ordered LMK. I will post them, and hopefully benefit another 6gc'er.

Items on order include: Complete Engine Overhaul Gasket Kit (I will source the part numbers to these items if needed), Timing Belt, Water Pump Assy, Oil Pump Assy, Wiseco Pistons 86.5mm, Eagle H-Beam Rods w/ ARP Rod Bolts, ARP Main Studs, ARP Head Studs, 2nd Gen Plug Wires, Distributor Cap, Distributor Rotor, Hydraulic Timing Belt Tensioner, and ACL Bearings.

Engine Block is currently at machine shop being hot tanked and new freeze plugs installed. Will provide pic's when I can.

Just got a call from the machine shop. The block has been cleaned, and new freeze plugs installed. The guy also mentioned that the block was warped between .002 and .003. That's not a lot of warpage, but I want it perfect. Right now I'm waiting on pistons, clutch, bearings, and ARP hardware. Then I get to bring all the goodies up to the machine shop, and the real work begins!

Posted by: Keiri Sep 21, 2011 - 11:49 AM

Good shiz Ben!

Good to hear everything is coming along nicely, even with the warpage on the block, and that your progress is still going well.

Posted by: bsamps4 Oct 2, 2011 - 7:37 PM

This may be a bit of a picture overload for some of you, but I like car porn, which means I like to give copious amounts of car porn. Here you go. This is the prep, and priming of my gt4 front end conversion bits.

Don't be stupid! Either protect yourself or you'll risk respiratory illness.

If you are going to attempt this you need one of these! I built mind out of drop cloth (plastic), tarp as a floor, a 4x8 piece of plywood, a beach tent, and clamps.

These pictures are from the finish of the body work on this bumper (ready for primer)

Final product. If you plan to paint something USE A RESPIRATOR, GOGGLES, AND A VAPOR MASK!!!

Final prep on the bottom of the hood. I didn't go nuts here I just roughed it up because not many people will see it, and it doesn't make a difference to me.

Final cleaning for the hood (soap and water). All the different colors are due to etch primer, rage gold, and original paint and primer.

In the booth.

Final product. Kind of hard to respect it in these pictures, but it came out great!

Posted by: enderswift Oct 2, 2011 - 7:50 PM

I like the way you went all out and constructed a paint booth. Finished paint always reflects the amount of effort put in so I have no doubt your panels are gonna look great. I hope to do something similar to this one day.

Posted by: bsamps4 Oct 2, 2011 - 8:05 PM

It's absolutely critical, and worth the time. You're absolutely right. What you put in, you get out. Never get tired of the pre-work because it makes or breaks the product.

Posted by: al94st Oct 3, 2011 - 9:05 PM

Looks great man, nice and straight. I expect a flawless paint job. DONT FUDGE UP!

Posted by: bsamps4 Oct 3, 2011 - 9:08 PM

Posted by: bsamps4 Oct 6, 2011 - 12:50 PM

I dont have any more pics of the booth, but if you're interested I can list the materials used to build it. The two guns I have are quantum qul guns. They both have different sized apertures. One is for primer and the other is for base and clear. I can snap a shot of them next chance I get.

Posted by: bsamps4 Oct 18, 2011 - 4:54 PM

Just got the motor back today. So far I've painted the block, and assembled the pistons and rods. More to come as the night progresses. Hoping to have the rotating assembly complete tonight.

Look at that cross hatch!

Line hone.

Primed.

Painted. The color is much nicer in person. Looks dark in this picture. Did this so I could detect leaks quickly.

Pay attention here. The larger reliefs are for the intake side, and the smaller for the exhaust.

Wrist pin locks are in, and fully assembled. If your thumb isn't numb then you haven't done something right!

Note the direction of the tangs. The tangs sit just below the exhaust reliefs on the tops of the pistons. Don't do this backwards! You may spin a rod bearing.

Cheers!

Haha thanks guys! Yea it really is rattle canned. I got the paint from autozone. It's a high temp grey metallic, and grey high temp primer for the base. Think it cost me around 12 bucks for everything.

Forgot to mention. 3m has this new painters tape called "edge lock" (i think this is right) It's pretty expensive, but really does hold a nice edge to keep paint out of the important spots.

DON'T BE LIKE ME!

I did this to my brand new oil pump yesterday (yes it was my fault)

What you are looking at is the bolt hole that holds the idler pulley on the oil pump housing. That grommet that is pressed in that my finger is pointing out came out of my old oil pump. The st205 motor that I sourced is a 94' model year, and I noticed this grommet in my old pump, so I pried it out and tried to press it into the new oil pump, which yielded that crack. I spoke with Aaron from Lithia Toyota, and had him look into this for me. Apparently there was an EPC that was released, which deletes this grommet in 95'. So now i'm faced with a 148$ oops for the oil pump assembly, and more (for all the gaskets, which were brand new that I cannot reuse.)

As embarrassed as I am, I felt it necessary to share this with all of you so that you don't end up like me.

I hope this helps someone in the long run.

Cheers!

Hi,

does i ask you, can you give me the diameter measurement of

IDLER SUB-ASSY, TIMING BELT, NO.1

http://www.toyodiy.com/parts/p_E_1995_TOYOTA_CELICA_ST205L-BLMVZW_1302.html

the issue i had is that i want to use the smaller gen.3 oil pump gear on my gen.4, i bought both idlers from gen.4 but now i saw that gen.3 had different part numbers
and i doesnt want to get problems with timing belt tension

the gen.4 one has the following measurment

here are my measurements

60 x 29,6mm

i'am glad if you can help me smile.gif

Spent all day installing the fog lights that I bought from Block. Since I don't have a JDM crash bar or frame rail adapters, I had to modify the factory crash bar. I had to drill and bolt the JDM fog lights, and use 1/4 inch spacers to get the fitment lined up. Also had to modify the fog light mounting brackets so that everything would come together nicely. Since I don't have a sunroof I used the blank in the dash as a mounting location for my switch. I drilled out the blank with a 3/4" drill bit and screwed the new switch in. Looks factory! Hope you guys enjoy the pics.

Also have a test fit intercooler teaser.

Hi,

WTA and ATA, both has pro and cons
important to know is that big doens't means good, first you have to fix your needs and wishes

in short if you are spool up orientated stay with the WTA system

possible a TTE intercooler is a good choice for you, i had postetd a few informations about in here ->

maybe a barrel charge cooler instead...

Posted by: Sunny Dec 11, 2011 - 9:40 AM

Hi,

the first you can do is to raise the specific heat capacity of the intercooler liquid, i drive a 1:1,5 mix alc : water, water is the best fluid to cool,
no one ever had developed a better liquid (also imperative for the engine cooling system)

alcohol, has a lower specific heat capacity and also reduce the heat transfer in the radiators

Posted by: bsamps4 Jan 20, 2012 - 10:32 AM

Got a few questions for you guys who have already completed swaps as to where some of the vacuum lines connect to, and a small wiring question.

Here are the pics...

What do these end up connecting to?

This one may be kind of tough. Non-WRC's have this vacuum hose blocked off on their intake manifold...so i'm gonna need someone with a WRC to tell me what this short little hose connects to, AND what the T fitting that is in the middle of it connects to.

I know that this hose connects to the water cooler, but where do you connect it if you're running a front mount intercooler??? Do you just connect it to the boost pipe?

This one right here has me stumped. These two lines are bundled together, one of them connects to the cold start injector, but where does the other end of the hose from the cold start injector connect to? I'm not sure however where the other one connects to, right now I don't have either end connected to anything.

And finally...my wiring question

Since i'm running a front mount do I still need to hook up the water cooler pump relay since it sits in the same fuse box as the fuel pump? Or do I omit it. And with the water cooler removed do I need to do the resistor mod on the W2A fluid level sensor harness?

I just don't want to run into any unexpected check engine lights.

This has caused me to also contemplate one more thing. Is it absolutely necessary to wire in the fuel pump relay from the 3s or is there a way to wire the stock 5s one in? Which is easier? Which makes more sense?

Posted by: Neon90424 Jan 20, 2012 - 10:40 AM

the first pic I believe goes to the big vac canister thingamabob.

I believe thats the VSV and one side is the vent side... I threw all of this stuff away when i went standalone....

Posted by: enderswift Jan 20, 2012 - 11:42 AM

If I remember right the lines with with the checkvalve goes to the charcoal canister.

Posted by: bsamps4 Jan 21, 2012 - 1:23 PM

Anybody know where the line from the cold start injector connects to?

Posted by: Sunny Jan 21, 2012 - 2:09 PM

Hi,

there isn't a cold start injector on the gen.3, i think you talk about the valve under the throttle body?

if yes, this is the homologated water injection valve

i'll try to remember as good as possible

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/862/photobucket465213270728.jpg/

1 = power steering pump
2 = doesn't know any more
3 = hologating purpose -> disconnect it and you will see that the port in the manifold isn't opened
4 = nor sure but i think this are the throttle body water lines

This is the air con idle up valve, the pipe connects to the back of the charge cooler in the standard car...just put a little air filter onto it or plumb it into the FMIC pipework. If you have no Aircon then remove the lot and block the hole into the inlet manifold up.

Posted by: bsamps4 Jan 21, 2012 - 2:37 PM

Since im not using the water cooler would I just weld a bung to the intercooler cold pipe?

Posted by: bsamps4 Jan 21, 2012 - 4:42 PM

Question on the wrc stuff. Should I just block off the two vsv ports, the water injector, and that bung on the no.1 intake runner? I'm not going to try to use any of that system. I would like to run water injection, but I'll be using devilsown.

Posted by: 96stgreendemon Jan 23, 2012 - 9:17 AM

Just leave it, that's what I did. And you still having problems fitting that intercooler? If you want I'll trade you for mine, which is like the Mishimoto slim, and it's one of those "stealth" black intercoolers LMK. And just shoot me a text if you have any questions, I'm not on here too often anymore. 859-912-2880

Posted by: Ted95 Jan 23, 2012 - 11:15 AM

i had to cut a notch out of my crash bar for my intercooler to fit, it slid right up behind it and made small brackets that attach to the bottom of the intercooler to i believe the bottom of my radiator support.. ill have to run out to the garage and take some pics for you if it will help.

im also using my stock bumper and crash bar too idk how much of a difference there is between the gt4 and preface.

Got all of my wiring done. Decided to post a small how-to as well smile.gif

Posted by: Ted95 Jan 24, 2012 - 11:16 PM

some pics of how I did my crash bar the front mount

i cut the lower fins back to help let more air come up underneath the crash bar,
it now makes it weaker so im goin to put a 1/8th" plate bolted to the front for support,
36"x4" is what im going to bolt to the front of it

I'm still playing with it, going to clean it up a little more and rattle can it so its clean but gives you an idea I guess

Posted by: bsamps4 Jan 24, 2012 - 11:25 PM

Looks like a lot of work man. Thanks for the ideas. It's time to me to get started on mounting mine.

Posted by: Ted95 Jan 25, 2012 - 10:05 PM

you dont actually need to cutout the bottom fins completely, but i did just for better flow. it fit fine before i cut the lower ones out.

Posted by: bsamps4 Jan 27, 2012 - 10:44 AM

What do these connect to? I can't find them on my wiring diagram.

Posted by: purplegt4 Jan 27, 2012 - 10:52 AM

I believe the plug by your condenser/downpipe for an O2 sensor. Mine isn't plugged in.

Posted by: Ted95 Jan 27, 2012 - 11:11 AM

ya the top one is for the o2 sensor and mines not plugged in either, and i think the second plug connects to the ignitor on the firewall? i might be wrong on the one tho

Posted by: bsamps4 Jan 27, 2012 - 11:17 AM

Already got the wiring for the ignitor ready to go. It looks like it goes to something nearby, but I just can't find anything!?!?

Posted by: ComaDave Jan 27, 2012 - 8:36 PM

Looks like quite a project, engine looks beautiful.

It's been a while since I've been active here, but before you get everything put together, you may want to reconsider that SPEC clutch. The tabs holding the springs in failed on mine and one of the springs got lodged between the disk and the fly wheel (after bouncing around a bit). I'm not certain if the cracks in the clutch are post failure or if they contributed to it.

I've heard from a number of people that they have had similar issues. I switched to ACT and haven't had any problems. I usually run around 10 pounds of boost for daily driving and have a full AWD setup, so there's a fair bit of stress on the components.

Here's a link to the Google album with pictures of the clutch that failed.

These guys are able to source a pretty large amount of gen 3 parts, and for the really hard to find stuff I used:

Posted by: Ted95 Jan 31, 2012 - 3:19 PM

do you have a tig welder?

Posted by: bsamps4 Jan 31, 2012 - 4:01 PM

Yup, got a tig, mig, and torch.

Posted by: bsamps4 Feb 2, 2012 - 8:22 AM

You can go ahead and assume that I'm an idiot, but I did some searching around on this site and google, but I still have a question, and it likely has a pretty common sense answer...

What oil filter are you guys using on your 3rd gen 3sgte? Is it just the 2nd gen filter that I can buy at any local toyota?

Posted by: 96stgreendemon Feb 2, 2012 - 4:43 PM

Im just using a K&N filter from a 3SGTE mr2

Posted by: purplegt4 Feb 2, 2012 - 4:47 PM

Posted by: Ted95 Feb 2, 2012 - 11:58 PM

im running a mobile1 filter for a mr2 turbo. when you go to a parts store ask for one from a mr2 turbo, or you can get one from toyota as well.

Posted by: bsamps4 Feb 3, 2012 - 11:34 AM

I figured that was the simple answer. Thanks for the responses guys.

Small update... I got my new oil pump installed, and the timing is all set to go. Just have the oil pans left.

Posted by: bsamps4 Feb 5, 2012 - 10:34 AM

Two days ago, my roommate and I went to install the upper oil pan, and get the motor completely sealed up only to find that we had a big clearance issue.

These bolts right here stick down to low and were interfering with the oil pan, which was a HUGE set back. So we had to clean all of the FIPG off and modify the pan to fit. We took some measurements, and took a grinder to it.

After a S#%t load of cleaning between test fits we finally found success.

Posted by: Ted95 Feb 6, 2012 - 11:04 PM

poly mounts are definitely worth it!

i got some info on the IC piping that we talked about last week, for my IC piping i needed 11 90* bends 2 180* and i believe 3 45* bends. i bought 2 ebay kits and was a 2 90* bends short so i had to get another 180* bend to make 2 90* bends.

this should help to give you an idea for what you might need for the piping.

i think i did the ebay kit also, I got away with just buying one kit tho.

It's been like Christmas all week. Lots of goodies arriving in the mail!

HKS bov...pretty sure it's a fake. Probably going to go with a Synapse instead.

Walbro pump...have the install kit...not pictured.

Smaller intercooler. The Hugh Jass one that I had isn't going to fit with the fogs.

Vibrant Ultra Quiet Resonator.

Vibrant 6" Turbo Flex Section.

HKS mount pipe.

Big Box-O-Pipes. Came with couplers and T-bolt clamps too.

Box of 3" scrap stainless that I've been collecting. Think I need a few more pieces.

Last but not least...a magnetic oil plug.

lol. why u say it's fake?

The diaphram isnt soft, the nuts are the wrong shape, the inlet port is too short, and hks valves dont come with adapters.

Synapse FTW!!! im not boosted yet, but i will be using Synapse waist gate and BOV/BPV when the time comes.. 100+PSI and the ability to have perfect tuned curves, holds. very well engineered products.

That's what i'm going to get once I settle this dispute with ebay. I'm trying to get my money back for my 100% fake hks.

I'm starting to get nervous. My install starts next week. I've allotted 5 days to get the thing up and running w/o exhaust completed. Anybody who's in my area HIT ME UP! Your help would be much appreciated!

damn good luck with the build If I was around there I'd throw a hand. this is turning out great!

Don't get nervous, just take your time and double check your work and you will be fine. Good luck man can't wait to see it in the bay!

Thanks Ted. The list of Gremlins is already starting to grow. Had my car up on the lift today only to realize that my brand new rear engine mount from when I replaced my clutch has already bit the freaking dust, and the front one is far behind. Not to mention the has a few oil leaks (thinking valve cover gasket), and I need a new passenger side axle....FAIL.
