Sorry for the long downtime on the forums, there were database errors that were a total pain to fix, but I finally got them all fixed up this morning. Cheers!

Not at the moment, right now I'm focusing on the server and stability. Anything in particular you'd like to see updated?

Hey guys,
This weekend I'm upgrading the 6gc.net server (it really needs some linux security upgrades), so there will be some downtime this coming Saturday. Should be just a couple hours and will ensure that the site stays up and reliable. Cheers!

False. I've actually been approached by a couple companies who buy up forums and load them up with ads, but I hate that experience and wouldn't wish to force that upon anyone else.

My C52 in my new project (details coming soon) has 268,000 miles and grinds first to second, so I'm looking to buy another C52 (or C56) that's in good condition.

I'm located in Seattle and could pick up anywhere in the pacific northwest if someone has one available. Cheers!

Hey guys,
Sorry about the downtime. Yesterday a very bad bug was found in some common code (bash shell) that runs on most Mac/Linux/Unix machines. The bug allows an attacker to get shell access to a server with ease, which is crazy dangerous. 6GC was vulnerable, so I had to turn off the web server until I could fix it, which I just did.

So we're back! smile.gif

For more information on the details of the bug (tentatively named shellshock), you can read this: http://www.troyhunt.com/2014/09/everything...know-about.html

Cooler I don't know who you go through hosting. But I run most of my sites through hosting24.com which gives u unlimited bandwidth for under 10 dollars a month. I typically run around 150-200 users on my boards during the day and I dont have any problems. Just trying to help out

Considering I need a full VPS (I setup all my machines using chef and there's a significant amount of custom work), I go through Linode, which isn't too expensive. Thanks for the suggestion though! Beware, "unlimited bandwidth" is almost never a real thing. If your site truly uses a TON of bandwidth, you will likely get shut down or asked to move to a more expensive solution to cover their own bandwidth costs. 99.9% of hosting customers won't ever have a problem though.

Thanks for the input! I haven't had the time to investigate the map yet, but when I do I'll compare various lengths of time and see what seems to work well. I might even be able to make it user-configurable with minimal effort.

My best guess would be that you've got some sort of malware that is adding ads or malicious content into websites automatically. Nothing has changed that would cause that warning as far as I can tell.

What browser, antivirus program, and operating system are you on? Does the behavior change if you try a different browser?

I might be able to make it only include members who have been active in the last X months. I know it's certainly possible, but it might be way too slow. What do you guys think would be a good threshold? 3 months?

I do not know the technical reasons behind this, but why can't we just upload photos into our threads or posts with out going thru photo bucket? I don't post much about my 6gc on here because I always have issues uploading on photo bucket thru my mobile device because my laptop is crap.

Lol I guess what I'm saying is it would be nice to just upload photos straight from my mobile device rather then going thru a second cite first.

The embedded videos can be annoying but I don't care either way.

"That's all I have to say, about that." - Forest Gump.

I agree that this would be nice. It would cost slightly more in terms of storage/bandwidth on the server, and I'm not sure how much work it would be to implement. I'll look into it. smile.gif

QUOTE (cardshark525 @ Jan 6, 2014 - 1:23 PM) *
Would it be horribly taxing on the site and search function to eliminate a 4 letter minimum? We all use abbreviations for a lot of basic parts from "ECU" and "EMS", to "OEM", "JDM", "LED", and "HID", to something as simple as a "code 54" that we are currently unable to search for.

I'm actually looking for different threads on different aftermarket computers for our cars to gather information on positives and negatives of each, and its really difficult to try to filter your results down without using either ECU or EMS lol.

Is this something viable that can be done? If you know how to search properly the generated results will be much closer to what you're looking for if it exists.

Not very viable, as it would be a massive undertaking to change the forum search at this point. It's not the best experience, but like others mentioned, Google with the site:6gc.net prefix will probably be your best bet. Google's pretty good at that whole search thing. wink.gif

One thing I've noticed is that on the main forum page, looking at the listing of all forums
It continues to reload, and reload, you have to reach up and hit Stop so that it will stay still.

Not a big deal but the sort of thing you might look at when you get the time

What browser and operating system are you on? Is that happening to anyone else?

Ok, I think I've got a solution in place now that should help. smile.gif

A member's first post/posts will be hidden from the public and need to be manually reviewed by the mods. If approved (valid member), then that member can post freely. If deleted (spam or other some other form of trouble), then management can simply ban them.

And I also removed about thirty registered but yet-to-post spam accounts, and patched some security issues in the third party forum software that I think allowed this to happen in the first place.

So, we'll see how things go in the next few weeks, but I'm pretty sure that things should be better on the spam front! smile.gif

I need to bring the server down for an hour or less tonight, starting at 11pm Pacific Standard Time.

I'm making backups and building a better development environment for easier and more reliable work on the site in the coming weeks.

I know other forums accept contributions to keep the site going and keep ads to a minimum and in exchange for a contribution, members get added storage space for pictures or other small things. I'd be up for contributing to keeping things going around here.

I'm working on this, and a start is here: http://www.6gc.net/about/contribute

Anything and everything is appreciated! I don't have any advantages setup for donations yet, but perhaps in the future. And since almost everyone shops on Amazon these days, if you shop by first using the links on that page, then Amazon pays me a little percentage and it helps out run the site, make necessary and long-overdue improvements, develop new stuff, etc. smile.gif

QUOTE (richee3 @ Nov 26, 2013 - 2:19 PM) *
This would probably be too much work but I would also like to see a subforum, maybe in Off Topic, for Other Vehicles. A place for project threads or just to showcase the other cars that we all have.

X2 on the other cars thread in off topic

It's actually a very easy thing to do, the community as a whole just needs to come to some decisions on what exact forum merges/subforums/addtions/etc. are needed.

QUOTE (kurt95gt @ Nov 26, 2013 - 2:57 PM) *

Definitely working on it. This will be happening very soon.

QUOTE (Box @ Nov 26, 2013 - 3:23 PM) *
Really we just need bot control, changing it to where new members first few posts have to be approved would put an end to it.

This is my first priority, and I've been working on it for a couple days and will be working on it more today, hopefully finishing it up tomorrow.

QUOTE (BonzaiCelica @ Nov 26, 2013 - 5:32 PM) *
a way that new threads don't get created by newbs unless they've already searched the forum for the answer. the search button on top right hand of screen isn't the best. google does a better job at this...

we repeat our answers over and over again. i usually never reply anymore cause it just gets tiring.

a more advanced chat!! haha

This would be very time consuming, but improved search might be in the works later on. There's a lot that needs to be done before that though.

Also working on getting admin access setup. The unfortunate thing is that the out-of-the box admin stuff on the forums doesn't work because of the way that the database and codebase and site integration has changed over the years. So it's a fair amount of work, but there will definitely be better controls at least on a few things soon.

There should be some indication that people are in the chat, you can hardly catch anyone.

I agree that that would nice, but it's a fair amount of work at this point, especially because the chat was built in a language I never quite understood (hence the unfortunate crashes and limited features frown.gif ) and still do not understand. But if I have time after the more important stuff is done, I'll see what I can do about adding this or perhaps changing the chat up entirely to something that works much better.

embedded videos.

What's everyone's thought on this? I actually can't stand embedded videos on most sites because they're slow, particularly on phones, but also on my computer. I still build everything on an old under-powered computer because: 1. Computers are expensive. and 2. If a site is fast for me, it's also typically fast on most phones and super fast on most new computers. And I love fast websites.

Furthermore, I ESPECIALLY hate embedded videos that auto-play on one of twenty tabs I have open, forcing me to frantically search every tab for the culprit.

QUOTE (njccmd2002 @ Nov 27, 2013 - 5:23 PM) *
and sure, break the f/s section in 2...

oh and the signature too, make it bigger...

Perhaps, though bigger signatures I'm against for the same reasons I am with embedded videos. But if everyone but me wants it, then I can make it happen. I just don't want the site to slow down. Also, bigger signatures are tougher on the servers, and that can potentially make everything slow.

QUOTE (richee3 @ Nov 27, 2013 - 7:04 PM) *
I'd like to see a subforum in the Meet forum for regions- IE Northeast, South, Midwest, West coast, etc. but I know that's asking for a lot. On other forums the rules are pretty lax and members can discuss meets, shows, buying/selling locally, and other regional topics.

How's everyone feel about this? I've also found the lax rules (with more new moderators to keep things even better in check) can be nice for the local buying/selling, etc on various forums. Again, we'll have to come up with a good combination of forum/subforum changes that everyone likes.

QUOTE (H8TRAIN @ Nov 28, 2013 - 10:36 AM) *
I'm new to the site but I've searched it for a long time.

My suggestion would be to consolidate the forums to enhance traffic.

My Project <--- Just as it is. It has a nice amount of traffic and users like it.
Engine & Drivetrain <-- (Turbo/atmo, swaps, routine maintenance, transmission & axles all here)
Body & Chassis <-- (Exterior styling, interior, Suspension, bodyshell, stereos, etc)
For Sale & Wanted <--- As is.
General & Off-Topic <--- (A lounge-like forum. With no "today i..." masterthread.)

This merging of forums is what I would like to see. Allow me to illustrate how I think this could improve the forum. Consider please the currently seperate NA Engine and Forced Induction forums. The amount of activity is not enough between them to float two separate forums. Meanwhile, there's really nothing that a turbo user should know that an na user should not, and vice-versa. Syaoran has a thread in forced induction about engine balancing and it is very interesting. This thread is relevant to anyone with an engine, period. Even information about blow off valve problems can be enlightening to a non-turbo user. I would also suggest that there should be tolerance for neophytes to have "silly and pointless" arguments such as "Okay seriously guys, turbo vs na whats better?" Most healthy forums have a bit of this for a reason. In this case combining forums would make one forum with "More Bloodflow to it's Brain".

Again, what's everyone think. And how should we come to a consensus.

I have to say, it feels good to be finally beginning to work on my own projects like 6GC again. I've been neglecting everything, getting caught up with work and injuries and other issues, but it's all getting better! smile.gif Now that I've got a couple sites with good traffic and good community, a lot less stress, good health, and some spare time, I'm hoping to be able to continue working on them full-time. smile.gif

Using IE8

The issue resides in your nav menu, it would appear on the new_design.css file some elements are being dropped in firefox but FF compensates making it visible, where in IE they are holding it up and simply showing the buttons in bullet style instead of the nav drop menu it appears to be w/o drops.

If you confirm your CSS in firefox, it should show you the specific errors, and using the development tools the file/lines in question. Atleast how i found =P

I'll investigate later this week. I'm out of town most of the week with no internet access, but I'll look when I return Friday.

Ok, I finally got the logging working, so next time it dies (which happens very sporadically), the error should get logged so I can fix it. I'm also going to work on a lot of the requested features soon.
