Hey All,

So I don't know how many of you potentially live in the UK or if this is common knowledge, but they have introduced the 'Ultra Low Emission Zone' (ULEZ) which is effectively a tariff whenever you drive into central London in a more polluting vehicle. The criteria for vehicles which don't have to pay this charge is:

Minimum emission standards

Petrol: Euro 4
Diesel: Euro 6

The ULEZ is enforced based on the declared emissions of the vehicle rather than the age. However:

Petrol cars that meet the ULEZ standards are generally those first registered with the DVLA after 2005, although cars that meet the standards have been available since 2001
Diesel cars that meet the standards are generally those first registered with the DVLA after September 2015

This means that unfortunately my gen 6 Celica has to pay £12 every day that I want to drive into central London. This hasn't been too bad until now, as I live on the outskirts, however they are going to be expanding this zone massively early next year and it is going to effectively make it impossible for me to keep using my Celica as my daily drive.

Which brings me onto the question; is there any relatively simple engine swap I could undertake which would allow me to meet at least those minimum emissions standards, and allow me to keep running my Celica? The key considerations would be:

1. It must at least meet Euro 4 emissions standards (ideally above and beyond this, as I can imagine they will continue to push the standards higher down the line)
2. It must be relatively straightforwards (as far as engine swaps go - I realise any engine swap is a fairly major undertaking)
3. Ideally the donor engine would be comparable in power and feel to the current 3SGE in the car now
4. Ideally the donor engine would be readily available; a car which is common enough to find second hand in the UK

Any advice would be much appreciated. If a suitable engine exists, you can expect to see a set of photo / video updates as I undertake the engine swap..

Thanks in advance,
A

Is there anywhere that'll list what engines are meeting this emissions goals? I mean technically anything will fit anywhere with a big enough hammer.

Well, any car sold in the UK from 2006 onwards meets the Euro 4 standard, so would pass. Which means theres a pretty big selection.. I guess I would be looking at things around the 2.0 litre mark as a starting point to match the current engine. But other than that don't know how to start whittling them down!

Perhaps an obvious choice would be to grab the engine from a gen 7 celica, which I think just about meets the targets, but may depend on the specific model and engine.. There is a checker that will tell you if any given car will pass https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/check-your-vehicle-35896

I would look at the AR or AZ engines out of the Scion TC. More torque than the ZZ out of the 7g celica.

Either way, you are in unorthodox swap territory. It may be cheaper just to get another cheap daily, until you can figure out your situation with the Celica.

Thanks, that does look like the sort of thing I would be after - except apparently the Scion TC never made it to the UK! (Was wondering why I hadn't heard of it..). It looks like the same engines are potentially used in Corolla's and RAV4's though, which we do get over here, so will take a look into those..

Yeah I mean I have a year before the zone expands so have a bit of time to look into this before the Celica becomes un-usable for me. I'm really just trying to get an idea for how feasbile an engine swap would be and start to put a cost against it.
