Phase 1:
-Gen 3 3sgte swap
Phase 2:
-Complete AWD conversion
-Clean
28 JAN 13
Purchased 1999 Toyota Celica from a private seller in Boulder, CO.
Apparent timing issue and suspected head gasket issue.
Drove it 30 minutes back to Golden, CO with coolant spewing. And when I got back, I beat on it some more.
Back at the shop, wasted no time tearing into it
Had to stop once to let it cool down a little
Ripping into it that night
29 JAN 13
Engine and transmission pulled
Signature Tweak pose
31 JAN 13
Ordered ST205 front clip
-coming with bumper, fenders, hood, lights and a set of projectors
-rear subframe
-rear diff, axles, brakes, drive shaft
-Ton of extra stuff I don't need
1-9 FEB 13
Ordered:

This is gonna be a good thread, I can tell already. AndI'm jealous of that clip. Let me know if you ever want to part with the rear floor
looks great! that clips is really clean too!
I'm really debating doing a full AWD swap.
I had a few subies. AWD is pretty damn cool but idk..it's quite a bit more work. I'd cut and swap floor pans..
What do you think? Do it all at once?
I'd keep it FWD for now and decide on the AWD conversion later. That's just me though That clip looks great! It's a shame that it's going to take so long to get here. Keep us updated!
You might as well do it if you have everything....You could just weld the front and rear clips back together, then just weld on what you need for the body / upper half and it would be a legit GT4....I mean the engine, transmission, rear end, and everything is already in there so you wouldn't need to remove anything. It kind of makes sense.
Edit: And where did you order it from?
You got a lot of good sh!t for a cheap price then! usually they send less of a rear floor pan than that lol
I'll have to write down that name for when I do something with my car in the future!
For sure! Not only did everything look clean, he sent me a TON of pictures, a video of it running AND has responded to my emails within 15 minutes with perfect english.
I was extremely impressed with his service.
Small Update:
Getting packages in the mail feels so good!
You have a really good start to the awd conversion, this is the first clip I've personally seen as complete as this one with the rear floor ect.. There aren't many awd conversion celicas state side and would probably be one of the only ones in Colorado unless imported from up North. You could always swap down the road it's your choice.
You'd piss off alot subies up there with a fasttt awd celica haha
You have a great parts list and parts at hand should be a fun build to watch good luck man!
Do you have a website or a telephone number where i can order the st205 front clip with engine?
Ladies and Gentlemen,
The AWD swap is happening.
That is all.
WOOOOO
OK, so let's get into more of the details here.
We're talking full conversion.
E154F with axles
Super Strut, hubs, brakes
driveshaft, rear diff, gas tank.
what the hell, might as well do GT4 gauge cluster and auto climate control swap while I'm at it. Should be pretty easy since I am keeping it LHD. I'd just need to swap out interior harnesses right?? I know the auto cc has 3 sensors and I'd need to swap the 3 fan assembly but as far as the GT4 interior harness, it should fit with quite a bit of extra slack right? Correct me if I'm wrong on that..
AWD conversion:
I plan on dropping the engine and transmission in and getting everything bolted up and connected (As if it were a normal swap). Swapping out the front axle, hub, and strut assembly as one unit, if I can haha From there, I plan on starting from the transmission and working my way back making sure the brackets for the drive shafts are straight and strong. And when I get to the rear, I'll need to figure out just how much of the GT4 floor pan I will need to cut and transfer over. I'm hoping it's just the trunk area but that will most likely not be the case.
Well, damn..no longer need that hybrid clutch haha
yep..just collecting parts haha
Mind if I ask, where did you get the front clip with engine? What did it cost?
Looks great!
for the rear all you need to do is remove the spare tire well and weld in a flat panel.
Then you can remove the mounts from the underside by drilling out the tack welds and moving it over.
see here:
http://www.6gc.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=85985&hl=mounts
Which stage clutchmasters did you go with? .. Looks like a CM box in the pic.
It is an FX300. Though i jumped the gun getting it because its for mating the s54 and 3sgte haha
11-18 MARCH 13
I took delivery of the package!
And again, I went straight to work on getting it all out and in
That size difference
Got some help
Got her in! (This pic was right at start up. I tidied up the wires and stuff. Don't worry haha)
At this point, I was having a fueling issue. I ran a 12ga wire and relay for the pump thinking it just wasn't getting enough current.
Turns out the fuel pump resistor pack wasn't completely plugged in.
Still have to fix that little gap
Finished!

Phase 1 Debrief:
-I ended up pulling the frame over the 3sgte engine. Rear output shaft housing kept getting stuck in between the subframe and steering rack.
-Missed the sneaky fuel return line to the gas tank. Spewed gas all over the floor on first start up
-Fuel pump resistor pack wasn't completely plugged in. Ran for 20 seconds and then died. Plugged in now. Works.
Upcoming:
-Until Phase 2 begins, I will be focusing on cleaning everything up, exhaust, tuning, wheels, and suspension.
Stay Tuned!
That was fast. Good work!
you make it look easy. very nice work!
Good Work!!!
How did I miss this thread?!
I can't begin to tell you how frustrating cutting spot welds are. I did mine as full rhd so I cut the firewall out. The floor pan would suck. But new-stars is great! Good buy.
You also changed the motor how I did. Drop the subframe out the front.
You would have had to have changed the steering rack though right? Or did I miss something there?
This is my kinda swap though! Quick. Enjoy it and drive it, don't spend 1500 and a years worth of time rebuilding an engine that needs no attention.
Thanks for the replies guys! I definitely wasted no time last week to get it done!
how in gods name did that clip get delivered like that, must be heavy...
You can pass emissions with e 3S-GTE in Colorado? The wifey wants to move to Colorado but I'm fairly certain we couldn't register our Celica there, so I'll be interested to hear how it's done.
From here..pushed through the bay door the guy in back is opening.
Into here...Barely fit haha
That poor fork lift haha
dang, thats it. there is no way i can order that clip like that, where in gods name i get a fork lift.
A little bit of an update:
Drove down to the Springs...
To get these It's finally legal *kind of* haha Had to register it with my friends address...
Cleaned it up a little bit..Still very dirty. Previous owner trashed it.
Have to rewrap the steering wheel and get rid of that awful pseudo-wood
Nice work dude! Drive down to the springs isn't bad when its not pouring like it did when I got my car lol
Ordered:
-Optima Red Top Battery
-HKS Hi-Power Silent Exhaust 3in
I've always lived in VA. But I visit Denver a few times a year and I bought my Audi in Colo springs. Would like to move their eventually!
Why would anyone want to add so much more weight to their car?!? Is AWD reaaally worth it? hahaha
The ocean really did a bid on that subframe
I thought it might have been a joke (hence the "hahaha" and the end), but it's so hard to tell in plain text..lol
Please document the heck out of this. This intrigues me.
Hey -
What are you doing with all your FWD GT bits? I may be interested in them for spares for the race car.... lemme know...
PM'd ya! ^^
Small Update:
The woodgrain is no more!
Got some new kicks
A friend of mine (with a built subaru RS) introduced me to his sponsor, Metro Performance, today. I talked and bull****ed with the owner for a good two hours. Anyways, he's more than interested in my project and will help me out with the AWD conversion. They are mostly a subaru shop but he wants to get in with other cars.
I'll be making some dimensions and throwing it in SolidWorks so he has something to go off of. Fab up some mounts and go from there! I'll keep ya guys posted!
nice! Good luck with the sponsor guy!!
I like your interior, did it originally come with the tan and black interior or did someone do it custom that way? Mine is all black, and it's horrible in a convertible. The interior gets scorching hot when the top is down, worst idea ever for a convertible.
Oo those are sparco rims that are discontinued lucky
Oh shoot haha thats what i meant its cause oz rally makes sparco wheels
Some shots from today! Damn I love Colorado!

Sooo many things still left to do to my SpyroOscuro!
Phase 2 Begins:
-17 gallon fuel cell
I had my eye on a few Fuel Safe and ATL cells but an RCi popped up on ebay for a good price and in the dimensions I wanted..so I went ahead and submitted a bid on it and I ended up winning.
-Subframe connectors
I have a few leads on the mounts. I do not want to measure and make my own if someone has already done all the R&D. Saves me time and money.
-E154F clutch
I got Clutchmasters to agree on warrantying my throwout bearing. They are known for sending the wrong one in their hybrid set for a 3sgte to S54 mate up. So TOB, alignment tool and FX350 disk are on their way.
-NonAWD specific
Seats/Carpet
New seat covers from Vincent should be done soon. Ordered the parts for aftermarket seat heaters with OEM switches. Pulled the carpet out to clean. Still very dirty and stained.
Brakes
Will be contacting my machine shop to see if they can grind down my GT4 rotors to 300mm.
Coilovers
Eyes on target: BC BR.
Alarm
I am still trying to figure out what aftermarket alarm/remote start system the previous owner had on the Celica. The RS3000 will not operate my door locks or arm/disarm the alarm. It will go into panic mode though if I hold down the button. Quite annoying.
A week from Thursday I will be dropping in the e154F
In my opinion I wouldnt trust any mounts you buy from someone else. Jmeyer may be the only one to document his well enough, but I dont think he's selling them.
I'd build my own, knowing that the driveshaft angle and everything is installed to your liking. Also the wheel base will move foward about 1/2" if you use the GT4 arms.
Interesting...
I didn't know the arms were different lengths. Noted. Probably would've figured it out, eventually
But to be honest, I just want rough dimensions so I have somewhere to start. If someone made quality mounts, I'd pickup a set and probably end up modifying them to my liking anyway.
If not...I'll be making my own.
Nice looking Celica, dude.
I'm sitting here, wondering, what's the weight on these wheels and wheel+tire?
I couldn't wait
http://s840.photobucket.com/user/malek6GC/media/DARKSPYRO/9A764FEE-0C7F-48B3-8F4B-22A301BE6E3E-1020-000001288CDB1CAE_zpsfc67beac.jpg.html
nice bikes! That's an 848 or 1098 in front..I can't really tell..and the others I think are ducatis but I can't really tell. I LOVE ducati valve design..and everything else about ducati's really except for the dry clutches.
Thanks! That white one is an 848evo, followed by the Monster 696 and then the Multistrada. There's a white Honda NSR behind that huge MS, too haha
My whole family is full of gear heads. My 748 is in the conference room and we just stripped an 1198s this past week
The dry clutch is one of my favorite features! Among the trellis frame, SSS, desmodromic valve design..which gives the beautiful voice of a Ducati..
Wow..didn't take much for me to get off topic haha I have another forum and build threads for the 2 wheelers!
The EVO has small engine changes like larger TBs and valves and taller cams. Revised piston crown (because of the valves). And of course the dope color schemes haha On the street, there isn't that much of a difference.
No traffic issue here I even have an open clutch cover to make it ring!
Some JDM swag
http://s840.photobucket.com/user/malek6GC/media/1A82A783-829C-4736-A793-95D58C38D88F-1885-0000015D7003EE99_zpsc57f357e.jpg.html
Took the engine out to put on new fenders?
haha nice! seat heaters are going to be the best part of this project!
I hate to ask the painful questions, but is there any particular ETA on the AWD swap?
After a bit of wrestling, mild cursing, and multiple sanity checks, I have successfully re-mated the 3S to the E154.
-Brand new Clutchmasters FX350 disk and throwout bearing (I will not f***ing give them anymore business, ever. Awful customer service)
Tomorrow:
-Drop new assembly back into the engine bay
-Start on rear end work
Sidenote: My UPS delivery guy, Dustin, is the man. I left a note for him at the shop where I knew my clutch would be delivered. He called me up and said he'd swing by my house later and drop it off for me. He knew where I lived because he's seen my car parked in the driveway a few times. He's got a built WRX hahaha
Anyways, carry on...
Guess I should update this before I leave next week!
Since my last post:
-Engine and AWD trans are in
-GT4 brake calipers drilled and mounts tapped
~Waiting on my GT4 disks and ss braided lines to come in
-GT gas tank dropped and out of the way
~Made a custom -8an adapter to fit the stock fuel line
I haven't been working on it too much. I've been busy with my summer field session. Designing and building a small scale race car
Unfortunately, I don't foresee much else happening before I leave to field training..
Alright! Let's update.
After coming back from FT, I found out that the guys at Metro Performance (who build full-on race cars) don't want to take on the challenge. Oh well..
Instead, I'll be designing my own mounts for the project. It'll get there..eventually
I ordered them from HRP World. Goodridge #21113
Edit: Turns out they do not fit
nope nope nope nope. glad I stopped in here.
They dont fit. I thought I posted it in my thread, maybe I didnt. I will have to post comparison images.
They dont fit.
I ordered the Stop Tech lines for the GT instead.
And I used the rear lines in the Front and the fronts in the rear. (the rear lines are a hair longer and could use the extra length for full lock)
The Stoptechs take a few weeks to get to you (and are twice the price) but I trust the build quality over Techna-fit and those other brands.
Honestly the BEST way to get the best possible fit lines would be to get custom made lines, but The stoptechs fit wonderfully the way I installed them.
Im pretty sure only Techna-Fit and Stoptech make them for the 6th gen.
Goodridge just skipped out gen with their lines. I remember seeing Earls lines from gt4-racing for the ST202, they would probably fit, but I didnt want to take the risk of ordering overseas
Holy Smokes!
I'm glad you stopped in here as well!
There's a shop down here that specializes in brake lines so I'll just have a set custom made.
^
ah thats also a small detail
neither the stop techs nor the goodridges have the anti-swivel pin. But I havent had an issue with just torquing the bolts to their spec and leaving them as is
I want in on this brake line thing
Here is what I use since there is no one local to me. Pricy but they have cool options and proven reputation.
http://www.brake-lines.co.uk/build-your-own/?currency=USD
i'm sure you noticed, they have pre-made kits for the Celica, unfortunatly they don't list ones for the st205, does anyone know if the 94-99 gt lines would fit?
http://www.brake-lines.co.uk/automotive/toyota/celica/
Figure I should update..I don't want you guys thinking it turned into another dead thread of AWD
Expect big updates in the near future. *hint*hint*
http://s840.photobucket.com/user/malek6GC/media/DARKSPYRO/3E11E668-922B-498A-957B-8280EFC9613C-7723-000009110F99B22C_zps3db3e1f3.jpg.html
Dat fuel cell.
Time for some big updates.
So the deal fell through and I'll be selling my Celica..
Just kidding
After quite some time asking around and talking to people about fabricating some rear end mounts, I finally came across someone who was 1) really enthusiastic about the project and 2) actually wanting to do it. Hank at Hanksville Hot Rods. There weren't really all that many hot rods there though..mostly porsches, bmws, an SC 2JZ swap and a twin engine VW they were finishing up..
Anyway, I presented him some pictures I had and some renderings of my ideas and we threw ideas back and forth and came up with something pretty cool. Instead of making a box that spans across the frame rails (front mounts of the rear subframe) we decided to make use of some tubing. The rear mounts we decided to keep the box idea and incorporate it into the frame rails.
I wanted the entire assembly to tuck under the rear of the car. They definitely made it happen. There is about half an inch of clearance between the diff and the body which puts the driveshafts right about parallel with the ground. They're finishing up the boxes on the frame rails now. I also used the GT4 rear trailing bars which brought my wheelbase closer about half an inch. I don't mind it for now. We'll see what happens down the road. Fun fact, the GT4 rear brakes are a lot bigger than the GT front brakes.
Wheel well was cut out, reinforced the area with bars and then 18ga sheet stitch welded and sealed. My fuel cell is going back there.
All this update and no photos?!?! Photobucket is down for site maintenance. Don't worry. I'll be adding them.
POSSIBILITY OF A READY TO WELD-IN KIT?!?!
These guys use an in-house mandrel bender. Cool thing is, it's electronic. This means the entire tube curvature is saved on file. Hank is working this weekend on pricing. And yes, we are talking about FULL kits including the rear sub frame mounts and the driveshaft mounts that come ready to weld on the body/frame of your Celica. I'll keep you updated.
Any questions? Ask away...
as in a full mount kit for AWD conversions??!!! as long as the price isnt ungodly expensive id be interested down the line
I'd be interested, assuming I can get one of my Nissans paid off so I have some extra cash.
Pictures as promised. Don't mind the insane amount of rust on my diff and subframe. Salt is a terrible thing
Starting from the front, driveshaft mounts.
http://s840.photobucket.com/user/malek6GC/media/DARKSPYRO/20130916_180055_zpsde3512d9.jpg.html
The replicated ones will probably look a lot sexier. Anyways, this is the passenger side front rear subframe mount.
http://s840.photobucket.com/user/malek6GC/media/DARKSPYRO/20130919_164642_zps99e0ffb8.jpg.html
Mandrel bend up and over the differential. A support bracket was welded at the top of the loop to the body (not shown in picture).
http://s840.photobucket.com/user/malek6GC/media/DARKSPYRO/20130919_164653_zps275f5af5.jpg.html
Driver side. Gives a good idea of how tube and plate are welded to the frame rails
http://s840.photobucket.com/user/malek6GC/media/DARKSPYRO/20130919_164711_zps6a85c69a.jpg.html
And then the wheel well delete.
http://s840.photobucket.com/user/malek6GC/media/DARKSPYRO/20130916_180145_zps6c6d154c.jpg.html
Looks great and if you're talking weld in awd kit. Count me in! Save me the time and a little bit of effort lol.
Here are the box mounts for the rear. Welded to the frame rails.
http://s840.photobucket.com/user/malek6GC/media/DARKSPYRO/C6AE09C2-80E8-4F1D-8829-08012AF2A2E4-4035-0000053AABB33D63_zps26e0f474.jpg.html
And the start to my fuel cell. Plans for this is to drop it about 4 inches into the body, support it from underneath (completely full, it'll weight about 100 pounds) and weld a cover over it so that is not open to the cabin.
http://s840.photobucket.com/user/malek6GC/media/DARKSPYRO/B63A71A2-869B-4318-97A0-D367662781D7-4035-0000053AC4F04866_zpsc52e0f8a.jpg.html
The plan for the kit is to have all the pieces for the rear end as ready to weld. So the tubing, mounts and plates for the two front mounts of the subframe will come separated and the two rear boxes will come ready to weld to the rails. They do not want to try and replicate the drive shaft mounts due to them being so small and minor body differences.
Looks great.
Keep me informed on your work with the shop and the kit. Cause i'll be #1 in line.
let me know if I need to call them for support too
Why thank you kind sir ^^
Here's a small update before I leave for the weekend.
I made some supports for the fuel cell. I would have had them hook to the inside of the cross beams but the clearance was too tight with tank in. Ah well..Welded those in and dropped the tank in. The tank sits about 4 inches below the floor but still has plenty of ground clearance. Eventually I'll make some sort of skid plate for it though.
http://s840.photobucket.com/user/malek6GC/media/DARKSPYRO/3C89F9FD-19D0-4237-9A2C-C175E2DC5AAF-5434-000007168FF4E607_zpseefd980c.jpg.html
This picture is at eye level with the bumper. You can't even see it unless you're standing around 20 feet away. And even then, it's not bad at all..may paint it all black just so it'll blend in a little better. Don't mind the nastiness rust.
http://s840.photobucket.com/user/malek6GC/media/DARKSPYRO/824F7526-EFD5-4ECD-8B9F-8140374FF663-5434-000007170A4489F4_zpsbca52570.jpg.html
Small issues: The GT4 hand brake cables are too long for the GT body
I also managed to drain and refill the rear diff, fill the transmission, run fuel lines, and extend the wires for the fuel pump. No pictures. I got a little carried away with checking things off the list haha I will be gone this weekend so there won't be many updates for a few days.
Still waiting to hear back about the kit. Shouldn't be too long. I'll let everyone know when I do.
Malek, what fuel cell are you running?
I'm thinking of getting a 12 / 15 gallon Fuel Safe Cell because its FIA-FT3 certified.
Excellent choice ^^ I know a few guys who are running Fuel Safe cells in their gutted subarus. Great quality tanks
I got a killer deal for an RCI 17 gal tank (not FIA-FT3 certified). I will be foaming and protecting it before using it, though. I also liked that I could reuse the entire fuel pick up and float assembly with this tank. Not the safest by any means but neither is the stock one
Can you take a couple pics of the mounts for the rear crossmember/diff that are a little father away that what you have posted already?
I'll try and get some decent ones. It's pretty tight up to the body so you might not be able to see much.
UPDATES:
-Managed to get the GT4 parking brake cables to work
-Swapped the rear GT4 brakes to GT so I can use use the stockers
-Bled the brakes
-Managed to wiggle the B-pipe between the body and subframe (holy pain and a half!!)
-Filled it up with gas and jumped it..what do you know, it started!
I think the GT brakes are seized though..wouldn't move
Almost there..
i would definitely be interested in a kit! I'd be all over that
Excellent progress - this is what we all like to see!
Public Service Announcement!
You can not swap the rear GT4 brakes with GT brakes even though they bolt right on to the GT4 hubs. The parking brake drum is too tall on the GT disk. So when you put the wheel on and tighten the lug nuts, it tightens the disk to the hub locking it in place..
Anyways,
I re-switched the brakes, bled it a little, and drove it around!
The interior is trashed, that is definitely an area of concern now..
I used the GT brakes and rotors on the GT4 hub. Required a 1/8 spacer behind the rotor. Kinda like a wheel spacer, but rotor spacer. I do remember having some issue, but if you swap the drum parts over I think thats what fixed the problem.
Also, if you guys use a fuel cell and do any track driving you're going to be hurting without a surge tank. 1/2 tank or less you will start to get fuel starvation. Just something to think about. Unless your planning on tracking them I wouldnt worry. The foam really does nothing except prevent some sloshing.
Why aren't you using the gt4 brakes?
I will be using them..eventually. When it comes time to tackle that project..
btw..the stock gt rear lines are long enough on the rear gt4 brakes..just throwin that out there.
I mocked up and welded an exhaust this past weekend. Added resonator and flow through muffler. Doesn't sound terrible but I'll need to clean up my welds with a decent welder at some point. I used a 2 setting mig with flux core I'll get a video up here sometime too haha
Still haven't heard back from Hank but I'm going to shoot him an email this week to see what's up.
awesome build man, keep up the good work
The possibility for a kit isn't looking good, unfortunately. I'll still try and push for it but I don't think it will be happening relatively soon.
Anyway, I am re-doing my gas tank set up. The RCi started leaking and I was never truly happy with how it ended up.
Coming in the brown truck is a 15 gallon Fuel Safe cell, Walbro gsl-392, and a surge tank.
I'm aiming for a much cleaner and robust set up this time.
*lacking in the picture department*
BOOOOOOOOOO...oh well.
What's the update?
Oh man! Not much haha School has been getting the best of me.
So far, I rebuilt the tank supports, set the fuelsafe tank in, ran the inline walbro. I'm waiting on an ATL wiring bulkhead to run my intank pump.
and I installed 7th gen seats..
Hasn't seen much motion lately
keep up the post it's hard enough to look for an shell to not to mention an rear subframe
So I installed my intank pump and ran wires to it..Tried jumping it and wouldn't start. I made sure both pumps had current and were priming, check. Fuel pressure in the hose, check.
So I unscrewed the return line and set it in an empty gas can, jumped B+ and FP, turned the key, fuel pumps running (got strained quickly) aaaand no fuel going into the gas can.
Something is clogged.
This is mildly annoying...
edit:
It's my fuel filter..unless for some reason the line between the filter and pump is clogged.
I'm gonna go with fuel filter..
Thanks for detailing your progress, i'm also planning on a turbo/awd swap. Quick question, being that the gt4 control arms cause the front wheels to be half an inch forward is there a way to correct this? Thanks
Malek,
do you know what diameter DOM tubing they used for your subframe?
Any updates on the weld in kit? Or is it possible we can pay to order since all of the files are saved?
Oh boy..haven't updated this in a while..then again, there really isn't much. It's just been sittin around. I can't *legally* drive it on the streets so I haven't had too much motivation.
Anyway, here's what is new. Welded in a metal floor for the trunk. Setting the tank under was a hassle and I don't think I would have ever liked it. So yeah, just to strap down that tank and run the lines. May be switching to hard lines. Idk yet.
As far as the weld in kits..Hopefully I can get some more information. They've been super busy lately now that all the car shows are coming back for the season.

Wait..how'd this get in here..?

This is what I got haha don't mind the dirt. It's all been cleaned up since this picture.

Coming Up:
-Fuel hose to stock fender filler
-WRX rotors (because the ST205 ones rub the lower joint on corners)
-Supra Pads
-New Kumho Ecsta tires...because Colorado
As far as driving it, I've put about 1100 miles. Launched twice, beautiful feeling. Really front end heavy in the canyons but I'm hoping next Spring's suspension work will help. Looking at BCs if anyone was curious.
I'm really considering a side exit exhaust simply because I have no room to pipe over the rear subframe. For now, I ghetto welded an exhaust that runs under all of it and it just looks out of place and terrible. Maybe fill that huge open space with a diffuser..hmm..
sexy.
so when you mounted up the rear end, you just used the forward arms to align and mounted up the drive shaft and measured the distance?
after a long break, I'm now a welder/machinist so I'd be interested in building them weld-in-kits.
cnc all the things.
Yep! The forward arms are about 1/2in shorter than the GTs so the rear wheels are moved up a bit.
I measured it all out to mock something up in Solidworks. I then took it down to Hanksville Hotrods and talked to Hank (welder/fabricator/awesomedude). We came up with we got on page 5.
yup, I liked what I saw. No measurements eh?
it's no problem.
I wonder if using the GT forward arms would be worth anything? the driveshaft would need to be extended the difference too.
would you know if the GT rear shocks work with the AWD spindle?
From reading pretty deep into other builds/discussions, I'd be right in assuming I could use the GT spindle/knuckle and get a highlander hub(since i'm converting to 5x114)...I already have rav4 rear hubs waiting to go on.
i've only seen featureCam but haven't really used it much yet...I still use manual machines(mill/lathe) with a DRO, though playing on a Omax waterjet is hella fun.
I miiight still have the SolidWorks files. I did it on the campus computers and took screenshot pictures to show Hank. My university is really touchy about personal inventions drawn up or created on campus because technically it belongs to them...anyways..I'll see if I can't dig them up. They weren't exact, just something to give Hank an idea of what I was thinking.
As for using the GT forward arms, I forgot to bring them with me so we couldn't see if there were any other fitment issues other than the length of the drive shaft. In fact, I'm pretty sure the drive shaft has enough wiggle room to be pulled back 1/2in and still be fine. One thing with shorter wheel base is you can't run tall tires or it'll hit the front of the rear arch. Anyway, machining a spacer would be a lot easier than making an extended drive shaft. Just a thought haha
The GT rear shocks do not work with the AWD spindle. IIRC, the GT shock where it mounts to the spindle is thinner than its GT4 counterpart. I'm using the GT4 rear suspension because of that fitment issue. That brings up another issue, if you don't do the front SuperStrut conversion and want coilovers in the future, you'll have to order GT front coilovers and GT4 rear coilovers. I'll be doing that in the Spring; I'm riding super high now haha
I'm not quite the machinist but i can design/draw up parts for days haha and yes, I do take into consideration the machine shop that has to make the parts..I'm sure you've seen terribly designed parts already.
Oh and some updates!
Some brand new rubber:

I just did the same conversion myself In my opinion it does look better! and there are so many spoiler options! I chose the Euros Looking great though man!
The GT4 rear doesn't have a bolt on rear bearing/spindle/hub assembly.
You have the knuckle and then the bearing inside the knuckle and then the hub (basically the same as the FRONT of a USDM celica)
So the USDM rear looks like this (which yes you can remove the celica hub and press in a Highlander hub, but you cannot go AWD with anything from the rear of USDM car, with the exception of possibly the coilover)
http://www.partsgeek.com/assets/rep/full/1041668.jpg
or maybe i'm just not understanding what you are saying correctly ha
ahh, that clears it up perfectly!
so my main query would be about the cost of using the GT4 rear suspension
If the following works, it could save a bit money needing to import some coilovers.
GT spindle with highlander bolt in hub & possibly need to convert/mod the rear CV
or
GT4 spindle and press in a camry? front hub & and possible CV work.
most of the conversions I've seen have used all of the GT4 parts, so I'm not sure if finding a way to use the GT hardware was done.
I have no idea about the cross compatibility with hubs and 5x114 conversion nonsensical things..
So here's some pictures lol New tires mounted 215/50/17 Ecsta PA31. Side skirts removed. #rallyheight until the spring.
Made an offer on some spoiler risers.

Great looking car. good work
Last year, I bought an ST205 HKS Silent Hi Power exhaust thinking it'd fit. It didn't (duh )
Figured I could just hold on to it and sell it when gt4s become legal imports or modify it to fit my car..ended up cutting it up to fit mine. Had to still go under the subframe since there is literally no room for a 3in pipe (even 2.5in would be tight!).
Vibrant resonator and HKS muffler SS 3in . Super Quiet now!
I took this video with my S5..it didn't pick up the sound too well but it's something. I'll have to get a driving video up soon. (embed Photobucket vids?)

Why are the rear wheels so off-centered? They look like they're set too far forward..
After much debate, I've decided it has come time to sell..
I'll be writing a proper FS ad here soon but wanted to throw it out there.
BUT..BUT..BUT..
Lol. It is always the same
Unfortunately, yes..it is haha
As a military member, I don't exactly have a choice of duty stations. Where I'm going next, it just doesn't make sense to keep it. I won't be able to drive it and I don't want to store it for the next, potentially, 4 years.
Gotta do whatya gotta do. Loved building it though haha
And as always..I am sure to be back
bump
I guess I never did close the loop here lol
A high HP MR2 guy ended up buying it. If anyone is around Canon City, CO they might have seen it rolling around. I haven't heard from him the day he drove it away though.
I still have the GT-Four though!
Now I need to make a day trip down to Caņon City.
Thanks for the update. Reading through the thread revived my aspirations for an AWD conversion, so I'll bombard you with a bunch of questions if you will
On the GT4 vs GT rear wheel placement: did you end up moving just the wheels 1/2" forward due to reuse of GT arms, or was the diff moved forward as well? Could you have proper placement if you used GT4 control arms, or is there a bigger issue at play? I thought that that chassis were the same dimensions only having different floor plan.
On the GT4 rear mounting SolidWorks files or bending CAM profile - are any of these still around the 6GC community, or have they all been lost?
Also, why didn't you use the SS front suspension?
Finally, if you don't mind me asking, how much did your current actual GT4 set you back? Just trying to get an idea. (feel free to PM me about this one if you'd prefer).
Thanks!
