6G Celicas Forums _ Meet/Event Discussion _ *** CANCELLED *** MidWest Spring Meet v2.2l ** April 25th **

Posted by: navseal345 Jan 20, 2020 - 10:42 PM

*** CANCELLED - Damn COVID-19 (fist shaking intensifies) ***

As it been that long of "official meets"?

Well it's been 10years for me I think.

Does Chee need more help on the "Beans"?

Thinking make it a big long weekend, rent some cabins by a lake or bum out on Chee's front lawn.

Ideas, thoughts and suggestions.

** EDIT **
Date is set for April 25th

Different spot! (for this meet)
Devil's Lake, WI

That sounds great.

In it's current format, yes. We've been doing this for 10 years.

Unreal.

It definitely does not feel like that long.

If it’s going to be in April better give me a date to request off. My calendar is made up till march...

All of those. I'll start building some cabins in my backyard. Hopefully be ready by meet time.

Yeah it's been a minute.
Was that when I forgot the grilling tools and we used car tools and tortilla chips to flip burgers? laugh.gif

Got those new Z3's on the Celica so I'm down as long as the weather is kind of decent. They're supposed to handle wet and cooler temps better than the Z2's so I've got less of an excuse to go further distances now I guess.

Cabins be done before the car. Wow

The cabins will just be 6GC chassis left out in the yard once they're stripped of parts.

Posted by: enderswift Jan 23, 2020 - 8:05 AM

Wow 10 yrs.. i think i started showing up sporadically 2009-2010, but it feels like maybe 2 years ago..

And look how far we've come: 10 years ago seeing a gt4 hood was really really exciting (at least for me) whereas now our meets have multiple members with true-blue wrc's. Crazy

Anyway, i already cant wait for the spring meet!

Posted by: bloodMoney Jan 23, 2020 - 8:42 AM

For the sake of Norberto, Let's start discussing dates:

4/4
4/11
4/18
4/25

Thoughts?

My preference is to not have the 11th, as there is a track day that I'm looking into on that day.

Posted by: narly_charley Jan 23, 2020 - 9:48 AM

I'm down for any of those dates. Let's make this a good one. smile.gif

The 25th looks good for me

Now do we want to make it a good long weekend or is not everyone going to be able to?

I vote for Starved Rock because I'd love to take my daughter on the trails, through the water, and on the stairs of death.

Posted by: navseal345 Jan 27, 2020 - 1:15 PM

I was kinda hoping Wisconsin. Some place different. Someone (Jake or Sam?) had said there was a lake with some good trails, and I remember looking at renting cabins, but can't remember the name of the place/ surrounding area. That could have been a few years ago.

ah, Wisconsin Dells and Devil's Lake. That's about an hour - hour and a half from me. Water parks, cabins, lake, hiking. I do like it.

Posted by: navseal345 Jan 27, 2020 - 2:01 PM

I do believe it was Devil's Lake!

Maybe I'll do a poll to get a better idea of what people want (but that may not matter,😉).

Are there any details on these cabins?!

Looking forward to this, should be fun.

Not sure about the cabins. Not enough people seem to want to make it a long weekend. Unless that changes, I haven't even seen if they had any available for that weekend.

I might grab a hotel.

Posted by: NetsToy Feb 8, 2020 - 11:11 AM

Thanks for the cabin info!

I would need to stay somewhere, because it's a 6 hour drive for me!

Doesn't seem like it would be too bad. I've driven a 9 hour drive round trip (one day each way) and an 17 hour drive (straight through, only stopping for gas), alone when I visited Pittsburgh, PA and when I moved from Houston, Tx to Dubuque, IA. Road trips are much better when you have a co-pilot.

I'm down to co-pilot or split the drive with anyone who passes near or through Chicago or the near suburbs.

Manual or auto, no problem either way.

Posted by: TimeslideZ Feb 8, 2020 - 6:45 PM

I'd be up for a cabin even it's just one night or something. But the drive is only about 4 hours which isn't bad. Definitely can be done in a day's time.

I would be down to split a cabin - Given its a saturday meet, and my job isn't open sunday, That would be an option.

Posted by: CoolZeen Feb 10, 2020 - 1:32 PM

the cabins: indicates 2 nights minimum.I was planing to take my kids but just for one night. I'm guessing if a few of us roll together or meet on the way, we can do the long cruise together, since we mostly are going north. .

Posted by: Lorelei6gc Feb 10, 2020 - 2:30 PM

Sorry for double post- can't just edit my own posts because they still don't appear on their own.

Obviously, If we're all gonna cruise together, It would be best to meet in a large parking lot as close to the highway as possible. Do we have a route planned?

I would suggest that we meet up at "Rest Stop 26" in Wisconsin right off of 41. The parking lot is just north of the Pleasant Prarie Premium Outlets in Wisconsin

Heading north from the city on I-94 (The Edens) through the North Shore would mean that there are no tolls at all once you are on that highway and all the way to Devil's lake. Its about a 2.5 hour drive from there, and of course no tolls, so it would be pretty easy to plan a stop for gas or to stretch legs (if necessary) on the way- somewhere just outside of Madison makes sense to me. The route I've got in mind shows no stop lights at all.

Here's the directions I'm thinking of, for those coming up through chicago or the north shore of chicago:

https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Rest+Stop+26,+US-41,+Pleasant+Prairie,+WI+53158/Devils+Lake,+Wisconsin+53913/@43.0002376,-89.9745031,253736m/am=t/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m14!4m13!1m5!1m1!1s0x880f89e88a5be11d:0xb058e5aca61cda9b!2m2!1d-87.9495032!2d42.522371!1m5!1m1!1s0x88076b70e8707b1f:0xdd69a4c886580ec0!2m2!1d-89.7309534!2d43.4183975!3e0

But I want you guys to try new spots! Eventually the kids will be old enough for roadtrips, and I'd love to branch out. I've only been talking about it for years.....

I think this goes without saying but we’re out for this meet. With a trip to Miami in April and a family trip to Yellowstone in May, neither of us can get the time off work for this meet. Maybe we can load up the puppers and make a fall meet though, as long as it doesn’t overlap with my Vegas trip. laugh.gif

** Update **

Contacted the place that had cabins... AND THEY HAD SOME AVAILABLE. Would like to know for sure how many people would be interested in staying/ making it a long weekend (I plan on the 23 - 26 of April).

Posted by: Bitter Feb 17, 2020 - 9:53 PM

I might be out, Erin's got a thing and won't be home so I'm on dog-sitting duty. Not sure I can wrangle them both by myself in the Celica for a LONG ass day trip like that and getting a hotel with them overnight is probably a no-go with just me because they get antsy/barky at hotels.

I'm real close by so I won't be staying at the cabins but I'm down to hang out around there until whenever.

Posted by: navseal345 Feb 18, 2020 - 1:29 PM

If there would be 3ish plus people to share/ split the cabin it would be worth it, otherwise a hotel would be cheaper.

Been heavy on board neglect here I apologize.
Jake and I are in.

I feel like dogs and children should not be deterring you core members from coming, FYI.
Even if you guys didn't want to trek all the way home in one day there's options other than the expense of the Dells toward Madison, and it's a really nice calm place unlike say, Chicago.
We'll probably make our own arrangements for staying if we choose not to drive home.

I did this a few years ago and it was the most fun I had in a while (I used to race go karts nationally). It was practice, one heat, and one big feature race. I wasn't used to the adrenaline and abuse in the karts, so I almost threw up that evening when my body started catching up. haha!

https://sugarriverraceway.com/

It included EVERYTHING. I had my own suit and gear, but they have everything there that you'd need. It was only like $80 for the day. SOOOO much more than you get with any indoor place and it was a complete blast. There was probably close to 20 people racing. I think I may do this again this year for my birthday regardless.

Slight bit off topic:

I'm possibly buying a 6gc tomorrow that came up semi local.

its gonna be a little rough, for sure, not expecting much more than a mobile storage unit and A-B

https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/533159293956075/?ref=messenger_banner

The good:

1994 Celica GT Liftback
White
5MT
body is all one color, doesn't look rotted out or anything of that nature
New radiator
Recent "minor tune up" (Oil change, spark plugs, maybe some other stuff)

The bad:

No heat, claims it needs a thermostat installed, owner is including part in sale. I don't care about it not having heat, we're almost out of winter here.
Car needs a windsheild as the current has spider cracks on the passenger side. Shouldn't be that hard to get, safelite lists it at ~$200 with R&R.
Some rust near door jam on bottom of driver rocker
Car is 1000 obo. trying to get it for no more than 750.

Posted by: navseal345 Feb 22, 2020 - 10:36 PM

That's like $500 car definitely not $1000

Posted by: Lorelei6gc Feb 23, 2020 - 8:14 AM

Yeah. That's what I'm thinking. I transferred some money yesterday and it didn't clear yet because i'm a dumb ass and forgot today is sunday so I have to wait for it to clear. I'm gonna go see it Tuesday now most likely because computers at banks seem to get the day off too.

Then again, I might just move to another apartment.

I think what I'm gonna end up doing is importing a 94 WRC after I save up. I don't really *need* a car just yet.

That said, they will probably be worth infinity dollars by the time I can afford one.

Suddenly, Inflation!

I am officially out for this one, sorry everyone. Not going to be able to manage both dogs who hate driving in cars for that long by myself in addition to trying to wrangle them in a hotel by myself, it's hard enough when we're both together with them in a hotel. That's a good question. I don't have an answer yet.

Posted by: navseal345 Mar 11, 2020 - 7:09 AM

It looks like the south area might be better.

Do we still want to do the normal (grill food/ hang out, then hike, then find a restaurant) OR hike most of the day then find a restaurant to eat at?

Personally since it's a new area that there is more to "explore" & looks like longer trails, leaning towards the second option. And trying to bring food that slightly longer distance.

Thoughts?

Posted by: navseal345 Mar 11, 2020 - 7:18 AM

There is a fee to enter the park...

Posted by: cheela Mar 11, 2020 - 7:52 AM

It's quite the hike to get around the area so it will depend on time and hunger/energy. If we don't grill then I say pack some food/snacks and lots of water.

mhmm, same.

Anyone thinking about a local Chicagoland meet yet? I wanna meet all ya'll soon. There's a chance I may be in court over the recent bus incident on this day. court is scheduled for 4/15/20 and who knows how long this will take.

yes most likely.
Not that I think we will contract it if we have a meet but more so that everything will be closed. Most likely the state parks will close soon if not already and hotels are outta the question too I'm guessing. frown.gif

we just have to wait for updates on the state parks.I heard that in Puerto Rico and some areas of Florida they are closing the beaches.

Well as of right now it seems like Devil's lake is still open but that could very well change in the next few days.

The Wisconsin Dells area with resort, water park, hotel, go-kart etc is closed down so that's out.

Governor also issued a ban on gatherings so restaurants and bars are closed too. When Wisconsin closes it's bars, that's when you know there's a real problem. laugh.gif

Ha ha you know that's true. Let's just meet at Cheel'as house. Who knows maybe we can help him (or watch him) finish up his swap lol.

I suppose it's a good thing I've procrastinated in booking a hotel room.
Hopefully this all sort of blows over within the next month.

Gov. Pritzker said we can all still go walking and hiking so as soon as the weather is good enough to take my Celica out on a weekend I'm planning to do an introvert meet, aka it'll just be me driving around somewhere then getting out to go for a walk and snap some car pictures.

Sad to say but... I don't think a spring meet is going to happen. I personally would be down for a fall meet.

My parents bought a 2015 Camry XSE (V6) new, put about 40K miles on it and then sold it to my grandparents and it just sits in their garage. I'm working on persuading my grandparents to sell it to me - fingers crossed.

Sorry for going AWOL as hell, Things have been quickly falling apart. I'll be moving to a friend's house in PA because I still have not been able to get a job since 2020 rolled around originally.

There's a county forest preserve near me that might make a nice spot for a small meet, it's right down 394 so it's not a bad drive from the city. It's not very large but there's some trails for hiking and there's places to eat near by including a few pizza places. In terms of driving Bemes road is right up against the back of the preserve which is a nice leisure cruise through the forest, but very short. Uh not much else going on around there though. https://www.google.com/maps/place/Goodenow+Grove+Nature+Preserve/@41.401797,-87.6043367,577m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x880e034875d47f87:0x46842510938343b5!8m2!3d41.401793!4d-87.602148

Oh yea, there's a nature center for kids and Chris/Jake.

I think in another month things will have settled down some more, let's see then?

Posted by: enderswift May 25, 2020 - 7:43 PM

Jordan I'd be down for a meet at a new spot. I suspect we can easily do it w/o risk of getting anyone sick, especially since it would be outdoors

Posted by: Bitter May 26, 2020 - 8:12 PM

There's some stuff west of the city that I think may be more equidistant to more of us, I just don't know about hiking/picnicking/dining in those areas personally.

We're still here. smile.gif

Can't wait for the next meet. It'll be the first time that my daughter will witness the pure sexiness of a Celica. We saw a super clean third gen MR2 in the Costco parking lot and she liked that it was yellow. lol

Posted by: TimeslideZ Jun 18, 2020 - 11:24 AM

so if we're speeding and get pulled over can we say we're just trying to get away from someone who might have covid-19? lol

Posted by: CoolZeen Jun 19, 2020 - 12:08 PM

lets do this. start checking for a day and place. I have seen the big chrome wheels chevy guys doing big meets here in chicago. And in other states they are having car meets to.

Posted by: TimeslideZ Jun 19, 2020 - 1:31 PM

Has there been any date thrown out yet? Given things are starting to open again it's about to get busy again so a sooner date the better.

Posted by: Bitter Jun 20, 2020 - 6:01 PM

No one has put forth any plan yet. I think we're all open to suggestions.

As far as I know I'm open any of those days.

Anyone have an idea for location?

Posted by: TimeslideZ Jun 23, 2020 - 7:29 PM

^ Available the same dates as well. The only changes is if the car is in the shop by then and not out.

Posted by: CoolZeen Jun 29, 2020 - 1:53 PM

everybody is ok with august 29? So we can start planning.

Posted by: narly_charley Jun 30, 2020 - 9:14 AM

I'm probably out till COVID blows over (if ever - lol). We have some family members that can't afford to get it. I foresee things spiking when school starts back up, so we'll see.

I completely understand. My offer of you driving the Celica is good indefinitely.

I may make it down to TOTD later this year with a friend (BRZ guy) and visit my mom while I'm down there, but it certainly won't be any kind of meet up. I've barely driven this year, been working on some small repairs but going very very slowly.

Posted by: Box Jun 30, 2020 - 10:29 PM

I think you all should come down to Alabama and we can have ourselves a hootenanny in a state where brains (and masks, unfortunately) are optional.

What do you have now?

I've been trying to get my friend from San Fran and his MR-2 to come out this way and Dragon with me one of these times. He'll probably fly out and ride down to Dragon in my car and I expect the following year he'll be thirsty for it in his own car.

gave up the celica to join the 350z Nissan challenge. so mainly stuck on track days at the moment. now that the GT4 celica is available for import i am in the process of getting one brought over legally to San Diego. just a long process.

I always thought the 350Z Challenge was seeing how long a 16-24 year old automotive enthusiast with a manual nissan 350z can go without hitting a vape or drifting into a tree, pole, or other non road object.

Posted by: Bitter Jul 18, 2020 - 10:13 AM

I thought it was how long the transmission and clutch would last (I know they got that fixed eventually, I just knew someone with a lemon 350Z) or how many laps between adding quarts of oil it goes?

Actually the VQ35DE is a nice engine to drive and thankfully for some reason the RWD engine placement doesn't seem to suffer the same timing chain wear issues that they do in FWD, not sure why as as far as I can tell they're the same engine and same timing set.
