Okay guys, time to spill the beans. I am buying a 98 GT 5speed with 200k miles on it. I am buying from a dealership so the engine wont last as long as being kept up to date like a real owner of a celica would do. Does any of you all have an estimate to when I would need a new engine? I'm going to try to nurse it and baby the hell out of the engine till its last breath but its last breath is inevitable.

Its also going to depend on who did what to the car in the first place. Just cause your getting it from a dealer does not mean that its all beat up. Its possible but not a for sure thing. Best bet is to inspect the hell out of it. Besides all the basic stuff, im pushing 219K and the only major problems I've had was a small distributor problem, and my driverside outboard cv joint. All in all not too bad for an older car. But yeah, It wont hurt to start saving money now because one way or another the engine will fail.

IIRC, the exhaust manifold is different than a celicas, has something to do with the angle. Although engine for engine I think that they might be the same, as far as mounting and what not...dont quote me though on that one. Im sure that someone here has thrown in a 5S from a Camry (do some searching)

Dont get an engine unless u need it, once in a while u may get a celica engine, and if u save, u may end up doing a swap. So no sense to change the engine twice.

you have to take into account the transmission and suspension. Those parts have 200k miles on them also.

Before you take it home make sure there is no strange noises while going over bumps and the steering is tight.

It can cost an arm and a leg to replace suspension bushings.

My friends car has 250k miles on it and it runs great. Only problem is it would not pass smog because the catalytic converted is worn out.
