well i've started what most people dont have time for. I'm in the middle of building my 5sgte and Rwd conversion,
I have a couple pictures to start with. If you have any question, just ask.
http://s266.photobucket.com/user/toy8490/media/Photo0272_zps582567d1.jpg.html
http://s266.photobucket.com/user/toy8490/media/Photo0271_zps42262c0c.jpg.html
I'm using a 88 toyota truck rear end 2wd. This rear end is harder to find, because it uses the 8 inch center section. And that comes with 30 spline axles. I'm not using the third member. I went with a toyota v-6 4x4 3rd member, that will allow you to buy a supra lsd that will bolt into the v-6 housing. I'm going to be using the stock v-6 gears that comes with 4.10 gears, It may be a little high, but i'll run those for a little bit. Also when i have the lsd out, i'm install a WEIR MAXGRIP LSD Kits
It increases the locking force of the clutches. So i'll be posting pictures as i go.
Fitting the engine and transmission, Dont worry, this is not the block i'll be using, lol. this one has a hole in the side of the block
http://s266.photobucket.com/user/toy8490/media/fittingengine_zpsde7c744e.jpg.html
I'll be using a 1990 ford mustang rack and pinion, because, they use front steering racks.
looking forward to this build, awesome work thus far!
Wow, that's awesome!!!
Should be awesome. Definitely going to watch this thread.
At least she'll have a low center of gravity
Enjoy!
if you're using the 5sfe block, what transmission do you plan on using?!
subscribed!
i believe that is an R154 transmission or is it the W58?
R154 was in the Supra Turbo, W58 was in the non turbo Supra. If I had to take a guess W58.
Nice. A 5sgte that's something uncommon and especially a rwd conversion. This is going to be unique build.
W58 requires a 2s bell housing to mount to the 5s/3s block?
Would love to know exactly what is being used.
I'm interested in this ordeal
this is finally happening. RWD conversion... YAY
like to see pics of the mounting of the rear axle. SweeT..
The transmission is very close to a r154. The transmission is a r150. still just a strong as the supra transmission. It just has different gearing.
I'll be getting some pictures of the rear end suspension set up soon, I used most of a toyota previa van rear suspension.
NICE! pictures of rear from underneath?
Now this is something I might have to do in the far future....
Looking forward to see more pictures!
Heres a picture of the suspension, Not very bright. I'll have more later.
http://s266.photobucket.com/user/toy8490/media/suspension_zpsb37f2e04.jpg.html
If you're going through all that effort, why stick with the 4-Cyl,. my future RWD project is hoping to be a Straight Six, or a full V8, not that I won't be watching like crazy to see how yours turns out!
Keep the pics coming, I'm super excited to see this.
This 4 cylinder that i'm building will be lighter than a 6 cylinder. And i'm building a 5sgte, I plan on making 400-500hp with this engine.
Very cool stuff. Will this be a DD, track car, drag car?
Heres some more pictures, with the engine all cleared of the firewall.
I'm going to keep the engine tilted, as how it was like when it was in the fwd version.
http://s266.photobucket.com/user/toy8490/media/engine1_zps5fa6af78.jpg.html
http://s266.photobucket.com/user/toy8490/media/motor2_zpscd112f81.jpg.html
Here is the transmission mounted up. You can see that the transmission is tilted also, but not to bad of a angle, I'll probly end up over filling the transmission a little so that the oil gets to all places needed.
I used a 1986 toyota pickup 2wd transmission mount bracket, Its in front of the Angle iron.
http://s266.photobucket.com/user/toy8490/media/trannycrossmember_zps9e51dbc0.jpg.html
AWESOME !
I wonder how such a severe tilt will effect things now that it'll be longitudinal instead of transverse. Seems like you're making good progress fairly quickly. Someone needs to standardize a 5GC/6GC RWD conversion kit.
*Thinks dirty, dirty 2jzgte thoughts*
Heres some pictures of the rear suspension
The suspension isn't done yet, its put together enough so that its rollable,
I still have to have bracing done on the link mounts.

Now heres some pictures of the steering and engine mounts.
This is a 1990 ford mustang rack and pinion, Its the quick ratio. 2.5 turns lock to lock. I also had used the mustang outter tie rod ends, With those joints, i had to use a balljoint reamer to enlarge the hole to the mustang outter tie rod size.
Also if you have noticed, I had to switch the knucles. The left is on the right and right on left. They bolted right up.

Its looking good. You want to do mines after yours is completed?
I can't wait to see the final product. I've been holding onto my celi for a future rwd set up. one day I will have a driftable 6GC... Good luck OP!!
Wow. I don't know what the heck I'm looking at but I'm drooling!
one questions, those tie rods will be under pressure once the wheels touch ground, and the weight of the engine. would it not be better to connect from bottom than top? Right now, they are at an angle, which will be worse on the road...
I have to say I'm very intrigued by what you are doing here. I always wondered what a R&D celica would be like . Just a few questions for you. How feasible would it be to do this with a 1or 3mz?, would it be the same principle as a V6 swap is now? And also if you are willing to help others with theirs how like ly is it that you would make a kit. Pretty cut subframes mount etc. So that all someone would have to do would be buy the parts and install.
This is probably one of the coolest thing I've seen go down on this site so far
I wish you the best of luck with the rest of the build and hope it works out well for you
I can't wait to see the final product.

Yup, I've already been thinking of that. But i'm going to put it togetter first and drive and feel what its like first.
I couldn't do bottom tapper because they are factory top tapper.
But if worse comes to worse I'll be intalling a bump steer kit that they sell for the mustangs, I'll be using a rod end and drill out the tapper and use a thru bolt .
http://s266.photobucket.com/user/toy8490/media/steering_zps92f48340.jpg.html
Sweet.
I was planning on doing somethin like this to a celica. When you have some time, can tell us all the custom welding you had to do
Getting closer. Got the struts mounted, so that it will sit down on its own weight.
I'm using 1997 honda civic rear struts. I went with these because, there compact spring/ strut assembly.
http://s266.photobucket.com/user/toy8490/media/suspension1_zps814b015e.jpg.html
http://s266.photobucket.com/user/toy8490/media/suspension2_zps11115591.jpg.html
I dont know if this is the same pictures as from before, but the heck, the more pictures the better.
Steering mounted.
http://s266.photobucket.com/user/toy8490/media/steering3_zpsef50f658.jpg.html
the R154 must have been in the MKIII because the MKIV non turbo got the W58
With all that work you are doing, why on earth are you using a 5S-FE? wouldnt a V6 or 3S-GTE be more satisfying?
no i dont read everything, i dont need to read 3 word responses like looks good man.
Franken-build progressing nicely.
A rwd 6gc running a 5sgte with a Toyota pickup tranny and Honda suspension... fantastic.
Every part has a specific purpose and I guess sourcing items already made (albeit from a random collection of cars) beats having to pay for custom created parts from an aftermarket manufacturer specific to the build you're going for.
Just avoid the VW electrical system
i'll be uploading more updates tomorrow of my progress. Its coming along.
Well was almost done, had the complet dash inside the car doing transmission tunnel work, and caught the car on fire, damit. I have a new dash and wiring harness from another car. But heres some more pictures

Im far from being an expert, and Im having difficulty figuring out how to word this correctly, but I think the rack has to be the exact same width as the celica rack. Bump steer will occur if the tie-rod length is any different from oem. The problem is that the as the wheel spindle travels up and down through the suspension stroke, the distance from the hub to the centerline of the vehicle fluctuates as does the camber. The tierod length is designed so that it is proportional to the length of the control arm in relation to its proximity to the strut mount. If the tierod is to long or short, it will force the wheels toe-in or toe-out as the suspension travels.
Hopefully this crappy pictures make more sense. With struts the steering axis and "line 2" would intersect at the strut mount because we dont have the upper control arm.
Here some more progress pictures, motor mounts / transmission mounts are done, steering some what done, I did end up odering the mustang bump steer kit that will correct the had tie rod angles.

The mustang rack and tie rods are the correct lenght. Also the mustang tie rods have a ton of adjustment room.
wow this is significant progress.
Seriously! ^^
This is some good stuff!
I want this
its crazy.....its impractical.....its freaking awesome
Awesome build M8.
Was just thinking, why not use the rear diff and suspension from a ST205? The ST205 rear diff is very strong.
Naw he should use the straight axle. Maybe get a solid front axle and have the worlds only 4x4 celica Big mud tires and all
Impressive project!
I hope you guys are ready for this, I'm getting pictures ready. Yes more updates.
Picture time, I love it.

It's so weird seeing the engine longitudinally.
wow at that point why not fit the intake manifold 3sge from RS200 beams
So much awesome.
IC piping is gonna be funky. I see a lot of lag coming like that.
Cut in intake mani and flip the inlet IMO, that would help a bit.
How about the front (of the car) mount ?
I assume you're going to loop the heater core water lines.
That's gonna be one loooooong radiator hose too.
Props for going waaay outside the box.
I already have the front mount Intercooler from my other engine. Also yes, i'm removing the intake manifold and building a new custom intake manifold, I dont belive there will be any lag time at all. Its coming along.
got the intake modified, it fit perfect.

dang... thats a nasty beautiful intake..... glad to see this is going well and not some absurd dream.. congratsz
truth ^^
This thing is sweet
nicely done. I appreciate the fabrication here.
Woww. I wanted to do this for years with my st204 but stopped thinking about it when I got myself an St205.
You're making me wanna do this again haha.
Props! One of the most awesome build I've seen on a Celica!
Keep us updated!
update? so rare!
wow, it's like you took every st204's fantasy and decided to make it a reality for all of us
I just now got the car running today, Just have to work out all the kinks, I'll up load some more pictures.
I cant belive this is taking a while,
I can't believe you think this is taking awhile for such a major altercation.
When I first saw the thread I assumed that this would be another thread asking how would make the Celica RWD. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the pictures of the engine & trans mounted already. I love it. I can't wait to see the finished results. You are making excellent progress, it's only been 6 months. I wish I could say the same for my 3Sgte swap, it's been a couple years since I started. Life gets in the way of your projects sometimes.
What engine management are you going to be using?
Did you get a custom length drive shaft or where you able to find something that fit?
Did you need to modify the fuel tank to fit that rear diff?
I hope this works

That sound makes my face look like that Kim Kardashian meme of her crying, it sounds so epicly sick, like a 10 gallon toilet with a supercharger with a strong case of the bat out of hell syndrome.
holy crap you finished O.O
good work!
This is crazy!
Love it!
Nice! Good on you, man. You've done what 99% of people on this board have thought, and scrapped due to complexity.
And people, lot of people, i mean lots of people. Said it could not be done...
I guess anything can be done
This makes the awd conversion look as simple as dropping in a k&n filter
Worked for me
impressive work....
how are you going to do the intake for the turbo? it looks like its against the firewall
I'm planning on doing my own header and new turbo, since the engine is built, That way i can get the intake and exhaust in the right direction...
Looking to buy a gt35 twin scroll turbo, I'll be building my own header also, So I'll be posting things as i move foward.
New turbo has made it here. Time for some work now.

http://s266.photobucket.com/user/toy8490/media/turbo2_zpstnmejvon.jpg.html
I removed the factory turbo, (which is for sale)
Now just playing around on different ways to mount it.
I'm also looking for a exhaust flange that bolts to the head, I have read that 3rd gen and 4th gen are the same, but i'm have troubles finding one for sale, because I have to build my own exhaust manifold

Here's a place where you can find a 3rd gen exhaust flange : http://www.huxracing.com/#!mkii_flanges/ca4z
What is the size/specs/brand of this turbo?
Sam
Thank you for the site link for the exhaust flange
The turbo is just a ebay brand. but the COMPRESSOR WHEEL DIAMETER: 58 MM / 76MM
TURBINE WHEEL DIAMETER : 62MM / 70MM
EXHAUST TRIM: 70 A/R t4 divided.
The model is: TX-60 TURBO CHARGER 70 A/R
I dont know of anybody that has run this turbo, But i looked at the spec and thought it should be a good fit.
Started and mostly finished my own built header, I think it came out good for my first one.
Still need to install my wastegate.

It kind of looks different since the exhaust is on the left side now.

found a short walk around of my car before I changed the turbo setup,

entered into my first drag race event, Import faceoff, I was in forced induction pro, and took 3rd place, won $100 dollars,
http://s266.photobucket.com/user/toy8490/media/importfaceoff%20money_zps8wvqlbof.jpg.html
Nice!
You are a beast. Few people appreciate how hard it is to make something from scratch that can survive a beating at a track. But I do! So great work
Looking rather awesome sir!
What did the car run?
I need a new transmission, so I did have trouble shifting it, I did a slow 13.60 in the 1/4 mile.
I do have a new transmission being currently being rebuilt, I'll up date with a new track time at the end of this month.
Lol a slow 13.6 he says. That's not even that bad
That's pretty slow for a lightweight RWD turbo car haha, its about what a OEM fatass supra runs. But I am sure it will pick up greatly as you get used to the car and get it dialed in.
Sounds about right if he's pushing around 250 hp at the flywheel.
I think he used the transmission from a Tacoma? So it's probably not the best gearing for performance.
People can have any car, exotic, autoshow, drag car but we can confirm that there is mad love for these 6gc.
13.6 isnt too bad. ned to know how much HP the engine is making.
Nice car, the thought crossed my mind to flip the motor around in my spare ST185 but I already have a 3SGTE/J160/G282 KP61 Starlet in the works
13.6 , what was your 60ft or your trap speed i could approximate your power from that
I've swaped to a r150, comes out of a 96 tacoma v-6 2wd, had the whole thing rebuilt, Now i'm having a extended shift housing built, This is what it should look like when it is finished. I've been having problem shifting because, i had a different shift extention, And lets just say that didnt work to well, It has effected my drag time alot.
Here is a picture of my old shifter extention setup that i tryed out.
It did shift gears, but not fast, Its like you had to wait for the gears to line up then shift, And i could watch the spring come up, Over all it was not working out
http://s266.photobucket.com/user/toy8490/media/toyota%20celica/IMG_20150709_183628790_HDR%201_zpsnaitkq4m.jpg.html
That was rigged! Im glad this project lives on
I'm looking for any subsections for a catch can? I want to install one, let me know what others have done, Thank you
like an oil catch can? lol.. antything you want... tigawoods post has one..
my 2tc has a plastic nos bottle to catch.
Yourh ability reminds me to that of czwalga, truely a 6gc Pioneer like your self
Just ordered a bunch of stuff, 2200cc Bosch Fuel injectors, Bigger Fuel rail using 8an fittings, Flex fuel sensor, and 1/2 fuel hose that will handle e85, Then next month i'll be ordering Megasquirt ms3 pro, so that i can use all these goodies.
interested to see this continue, my friend just built a 7th gen celica RWD with a 2JZGTE.
Project has came along way since i've been on here,
Have short part in this video at a race i was at, 3.35 mins is my time
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cwIyMpgiQe0
I've been running a 58 mm china turbo, i'm tuned to 30 + boost. Running e85. 2,200 injectors, 044 fuel pump. I'm out of fuel pump now, and will be doing some changes. I have done new 4 link suspension out back with a ford 9 inch all aluminum housing, 3.90 gears, Changed out my 5 speed manuel with a GM turbo 400 automatic with transbrake. Using BTE racing custom built race torque converter stall 4,800 rpms.
I have a new 76 MM china turbo that i'll be installing shortly, and a MagnaFuel ProTuner 750 Series In-Line Fuel Pumps MP-4303 fuel pump.

Well I have taken this 5sgte 76mm turbo as far as it will make with stock 4th gen camshafts. Made 483hp to the wheels on the dyno. at 35psi.
I need to let it breath. Tell me what people recommend for cams?
It is becoming a full race Drag car.
That’s a seriously impressive number.
I have new numbers, still with the stock cams on the 4th gen head. Made 551 who 40 psi
new progress, Now have a automatic GM th400 with a transbrake, New turbo 6870 precision. Making a lot more power now. 800hp to the wheels. Here is a couple links

went through the thread and I don't think I saw it mentioned, but have you cracked the motor open to upgrade the internals or are you still on factory internals?
Its a fully built motor.
too bad that GTR didn't get a good launch. Would've been nice to see you go head to head with it.
The GTR did get a 1/4 mile time 11.6, My celica was at 9.22
That thing ****s.
Fixed my fueling problem with a larger feed hose.
Now i have a traction problem. Over the winter i'm going to loose weight off the front end, and transfer weight to the rear. Then redo my suspension bar links mounting positions. Buy summer again. I want to get this car into the 8's
Link below is with the fueling fixed , and as you can see my traction problem

You ever thought about a one piece front end? Could make it out of fiberglass to help reduce the front weight.
:slow clap:
Hard to believe all that out of a 4cyl. Can't believe the block is holding together.

Adjusted rear suspension, tuned the motor, entered my first race this year at import face off, Off the trailer the car went straight with a little bit of wheel spin on the launch , 2nd and 3rd gear to the floor.
