I am a celica freak, I want to take a 5sfe block and build a full race motor. I also want to rework the rear and create space for an awd system. Was wondering if anyone has attempted this yet? If so what problems did you encounter and tips for finding parts. All work will be done by me and my friend who is a certified mechanic.

We all have that one friend who is a "mechanic" .... laugh.gif

To answer your question, yes it has been done before. Search around and you will find some good info to show your "mechanic"

The research ive done syays that the rear end has to be completely rebuilt from.sheet metal down and I know the motor can handle.the power. Was just seeing if folks had some tips and tricks. Finding the parts and importing them isnt easy and was just looking for knowledge, not looking for trolling people

First off I don't think anyone is even remotely pushing close to 600hp with the 5sfe block. Hell that's a lot of power for the 3sgte or damn near any 4 cylinder block. I personally don't think a 600hp+ celica would be street able at all. Also the funds to make a 600hp car wouldn't be cheap at all. You'll be better off finding a v8 to modify. Any sub 2500 pound car pushing 300whp is definitely more than enough. Let's put it this way a 275whp na/nb miata can keep up if not out run a z06. So unless you plan to drag this thing it's a death sentence.

There are many different ways of doing the awd conversion, people have used the rear sheet metal to rebuild the rear and just bolting the sub frame in. There are many threads in the project section showing this, I have also seen people make there own custom mounts and just weld them in which works too. Again search the threads..

I've seen pressure tests with 5sfe being able to handle more power than an evo block. Now those push over 1000 if you do it right, thats my end goal. And it will drag and have full cage and.cradle, ive got kids so cant mess around with safety. Custom.heads and precision turbo isn't cheap either. I understand the budget. From.what ive heard to get and build the rear is prob gonna run around 5 to 6k.

A block being able to handle static pressure is one thing, a block being able to handle dynamic loads is another thing entirely. At 1000hp from a 2.2L you'll need to make 250hp on each cylinder, roughly double the stock power output of the WHOLE ENGINE will be loaded on EACH rod bearing. There's not going to be enough bearing surface present to sustain that load for any meaningful length of time assuming it doesn't fail on the lead up to that power level. Not to mention the loading on the crank and it's main bearings against the block, likely you'll run out of oil film down there too and if it doesn't spin/scuff bearings from load it'll be doing so from the block distorting. The only way you're going to get away with running that kind of power on a somewhat reliable basis is to get a custom block machined, and at that point it's not a 5S-FE anymore, it's a hunk of billet with water jackets and cylinder liners pressed into it.
And then there's the drivetrain itself, it's not going to stand up to 1000hp. Period. You'll be scouring for $20,000 WRC transmissions and $10,000 WRC differentials, buying custom axles, you'll end up with a $90,000 car that runs 10's and breaks something new every 4th run.
If you want 1000hp buy a lightly used GTR and mod it, it'll be cheaper and more reliable in the long run and hey it's a GTR!

Now, if you shoot for 500hp that's more reasonable and attainable and can possibly be made reliable. Go for that.

I wanna see these 600hp+ 5sfe, are you keeping it NA, or Forced Inductions (turbo/supercharger), Any links to these pressure test? Alot of us who commented on this thread has been in the 6gc community for 8+years, myself for 15 years and seen alot of these what if post. Countless hours of research for these engines.

Ive seen a few 5sgte builds (from alltrac/mr2) pushing 500-600, but that's a decently crazy build. I would lower your expectations a bit, 1,000hp is ridiculous. The 300ish an st205 gets you is a lot faster than you'd think

The general support for something over those build just isn't available, it would all be custom.

Just what I was about to say.

Most people who would ACTUALLY do something like this wouldn't come to an enthusiast forum to ask for help and opinions.
These unimaginable feats are usually performed by engineers from race-teams funded by eccentric millionaires.

While I'm glad that you've found 6gc, I'm sorry to inform you that you are looking on the wrong board for information on building a 5s-gte hybrid engine. Better info can be sourced from alltrac.net or mr2oc.com

In reality though, there are a few 5sgte's pulling decent numbers (600-1000hp), but it is true they need to be rebuilt often for the reasons stated above.

As for the AWD conversion, there are a few cars on this board with the conversion completed, however information is limited at best. The easiest route is to import a rear cut ST205 and cut/weld the floorpans.

FYI: The fastest ST185 in the US is running in the high 900's (on a 5sgte fully forged, balanced and blueprinted up to 10krpm) with a 205 trans and diff. I know that he is running a custom 1pc CF drivshaft, but am unsure of the axleshafts.

It's not for the faint of heart or light wallet
