6G Celicas Forums _ My Project _ smkr3w's Thread

Posted by: smkr3w Apr 27, 2011 - 4:50 PM

My Name is Shayne.

I got my 97 Celica GT about 5 years ago with 68k original miles.
This was the first picture taken of it, a couple weeks after I got my license.

The only issues she's had (over time) was a blown clutch, blown heater core, and now a leaking PS boot. The clutch went out after only having the car for a year, I think it was due to previous owner, as when she traded it in she told my dad she was 'tired of shifting'.

Fast forward to about a month before joining here and i installed my first 'performance mod,' an eBay short air intake for $25.

Secondly I painted my stock calipers
Before:

After:

Then came the rims.. I originally wanted 18's but settled with 17's, but I'm satisfied biggrin.gif

Not too long after came the JDM's thumbsup.gif my favorite addition. Thanks to 6gc member ST205WRC.

Installed:

Then I decided on changing up the interior. But wanting to keep the option of going back to stock, i kept the original pieces and painted parts i pulled of a junkyard Celica. And knowing prep work is most important I sanded, primed, sanded, light coat, final coat, and clear coated. biggrin.gif

(Looks 10x better in real life..)

And about 2-3 weeks ago I got some new tint, the original tint was the cheap purple kind and filled with bubbles..
..last week i got my 6gc stickers (thanks to LewFX) thumbsup.gif

And a couple days ago I added the eBay Xentec 10000k HIDs, I think they may be too blue..

..Finally this is how she sits today

Future plans include coilovers (megans ftw), strut bars, header and cat back exhaust, new sound system, and fully renewed interior with Vincent_doggy leather seats.

Exterior wise.. possibly a de-skirt plus mud flaps OR addition of a c-one style bumper and rear spats (unsure though)

A swap was in the plan but seeing as shes my DD and i don't have any other means of transportation it wouldn't be wise to start that project anytime soon..

Sick car man. That's an incredibly clean GT, can't wait to see what you do with this bad boy.

Posted by: smkr3w Apr 27, 2011 - 11:09 PM

Thanks. Just before i got my rims i came across your car when searching through celicas, you gotta pretty awesome car.

Posted by: smkr3w Jun 5, 2011 - 2:36 AM

Small interior update.. I got my white Spree LED Dash kit partially installed. Namely the gauges, clock, ignition ring and cigarette lighter ring..

My next day off I'm going to install the climate control as well as the side courtesy lights..

As an extra bit of a project, I'm considering re-routing the courtesy lights to under the dash on both driver and passenger side, as to illuminate the floor when the doors are open. biggrin.gif

the clock is pink/purple-ish because of the filter, i guess it offsets the green.. spree updated his FS post for the white kits, hes worked out the pink and will be sending out new/different filters for the white kits.

Only 2 days now.. I haven't heard much negativity toward LEDs, weird. Maybe it depends on the kind of LED or companies?

Posted by: smkr3w Jun 11, 2011 - 2:48 PM

A little bit of a setback.. today when i was dropping off my roommate, i notice my intake was sounding funny, when i got back home i popped the hood to find my SRI had lost a clamp and fell off, and the engine was sucking unfiltered air kindasad.gif
i was surprised the MAF didn't send a signal since no air was passing by it.

Anyway, i threw on another clamp, and as i was closing the hood i noticed that the top of my radiator has two cracks in it frown.gif

Notice the spray of coolant on the fuse box behind it.

The local autozone had to order my replacement, that's $150 gone.. could have went towards my headers rolleyes.gif

Posted by: smkr3w Jun 14, 2011 - 7:57 PM

Installed my new radiator, and while it was out took the chance to clean a little around the engine bay.

Just after taking out the radiator.. notice all the coolant sprayed around the bay (crappy pics)

And after it was installed and cleaned a bit..

Also painted the SRI tube black, tomorrow i will try the heat shield and maybe valve cover.. its too hot outside now (104 degrees!)

One more to add to the list, my front motor mount is busted frown.gif

Posted by: smkr3w Jun 27, 2011 - 8:56 PM

Finally got some bass.. I picked up a 12" Sony Xplod sub with box and 600 Watt Dual Amp for just $100.
Bought some vinyl spray to change the gray box to black and changed the gray housing black also.
And for an added touch some red painted screws smile.gif

Here some install pics.

Freshly Removed passenger seat and rear seats.

Followed by plastics and a major CLEAN.. it appears the previous owner had a kid, there was a small broken toy and smashed graham crackers under the rear seats.
Must've also had a dog because under the passenger seat was a crapload of dog hair..

Bit of wiring.. (not me)

Some taste testing before i put the seats back in biggrin.gif

Finally put back together and in working order. Simple and clean, how i like it.

We ran the power chord from the battery, under the fender, quick hop thru the door jamb, inside kick panel, under carpet to amp under passenger seat.
The amp is bridged and has signals from a line converter running from splices off the rear speakers. The remote wire is spliced into the cigarette lighter.
Doesn't sound to bad for a ghetto rig, lol.

Got around to installing my Kirk Polyurethane Inserts today (Just the front mount)..

Pulled it out and checked the damage.

in..

and installed

The only issue that I came across was with the 14mm bolts that attaches the mount to the crossmember was fighting me. First lost hold of the bolt and it got stuck in the hollow part of the crossmember, then the first bolt went in and the second one refused to go in because the mount wasn't sitting straight so it had to be taken out and re-situated.. then it was fine.

As far as how it performs.. it makes the car feel completely different, in a good way wink.gif
You can dump the clutch and it just glides no major shiftshock.
The vibration that everyone talks about is there.. most noticeable when you first start the car and at idle esp with the a/c on, however its easy to get over. Also you car feel it a good bit in the brake pedal.

Last week I celebrated my 20th and it was pretty effin sweet.

i woke up to the mail lady dropping of my 8" midbasses i bought from urbandork. thanks again!

Installed immediately..

My old speakers had major issues lol

Then not even an hour later my roomate told me he'd have his buddy put on my N1 knockoff for me.
so we took it to his shop, and he did a little cut and paste, w/o new header, for now...

I like that the exhaust sound is deep at idle and low rpms, and when im driving and get to the higher rpms it is barely noticeable, not obnoxious lol

Posted by: stephen_lee Aug 1, 2011 - 9:33 PM

you should really upgrade the rest of the piping. it'll make it deeper and a little louder but u will gain HP

Posted by: smkr3w Aug 2, 2011 - 8:32 PM

i want to eventually..
the guy who installed it said he'd put on new pipe from the stock header flange back when i had the money but he was dead against installing a header because he said hes seen teens come in and have him install them and mess up the engines.. but if i brought him the headers anyway he'd put it on for me too

Posted by: smkr3w Mar 28, 2012 - 3:24 PM

Alright so lots of updates that happened over the last few months and i posted occasionally in the "today i...." thread and what have you but haven't updated this thread since last summer..

Ill try not to talk too much so LOTS of pictures to show:

First I finally got rid of the horrible gray/beige headliner and went black

and did up the plastics to match

Then proceeded to work on the interior and went for a VIP/Luxury look. I know many of you don't care for a luxury 6gc (for the most part). I enjoy it.
So I vinyl wrapped the interior plastics and got rid of that horrible fast and furious rattle-can red paint.
I also installed "wood flooring," again not everyone's cup of tea, but i like it biggrin.gif

Overall:

Notice the floormats? Wood Floors biggrin.gif

Driver side:

Pass. side:

The rears:

And..... of course the trunk wink.gif

From my point of view:

From the passengers point of view:

Little more of the trunk:

For a quick how to:
Buy some laminate wood flooring of your liking, you could use real hardwood if you wanted but it's be more expensive and time consuming.

And buy some hard-board sheets, mine were 2'x4'x3/16" as well as an adhesive. I chose felt-back vinyl flooring adhesive/leveler and applied with a trowel to the backboard. And place the flooring strips on it.

Traced the floormats:

and cut (we used an angle grinder)

example (rear driver side):

all the inside mats cut:

upclose of drivers floor cut where the trunk release sits

sadly didnt take any in-progress pics when i did the trunk frown.gif

Despoilered!!! and removed the rear wiper

Bought and installed Sokie Tech Hood Dampeners

Also I finally got around to lowering my celica (should have been one of the first mods)
I took a small risk and bought Stagg SHS Struts for 150 shipped off of ebay.
Also to lower it I purchased Megan racing springs.

For those who are thinkin about stagg struts.. tho its only been roughly 2 months I recommend them for those on a budget thumbsup.gif

The night I finally decided to drop it I forgot my roomate lended out his floor jack so i resoted to the old school stock trunk jack.. it was a PITA, just saying rolleyes.gif

Next day pics..

And Newest Update! biggrin.gif

Last week I recieved my MOOG camber bolts, but held off installing them until I got the rear spacers that I bought.

And yesterday I recieved my Rear 1" Spacers from 6gc member djgeo05, formerly Axel04's celi.

And I installed those woot.gif
Some pics, before and after

So thats all for now, I think, lol.
Thanks for looking smile.gif

Installed them in the high beam housings. The pic is when they are lit up. But since the LED strips are using the running light wires, the blinkers are just that- blinkers smile.gif

I knew before installing them there's a risk with lug centric spacers, but I only drive like 10-15 miles a day and never drive my car hard so all should be fine.

Got an update or two..

Last week I finished my rear conversion from 5x100 to 5x114

And this week I bought my friends touchscreen HU which I'm super excited about. The sound is 100% better than my old stereo and LOOKS better too biggrin.gif

Thanks! I looked/tried but the mounting holes won't let it move any farther back. Even though it doesn't sit flush it doesn't protrude enough to bother me.
And for 100 bucks with no scratches and works perfect I can't complain much lol.

Also the primary reason for the hub conversion was because it was cheaper to replace with camry parts than celica parts.. and the reason I replaced them was because of a slight wobble on the pass. rear hub and a rollercoaster type sound at slow speeds.

However the sound is still there kindasad.gif not better or worse. So what else could cause that type of sound? I can only think of the endlinks but that doesn't seem likely to me?

Anyone got ideas?

They're for a XV10 Camry (91-96). These have the same hub/bearing assembly as ours except in 5x114 bolt pattern. Also used the camry's rear brake discs!

I had a discussion about before I went through with it. http://www.6gc.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=87278

Plasti dipped my wheels white... well two of em anyway wanted to see what they would look like.
Dunno if I'm going to keep em but if i do then I'll have to re dip the rear wheel because I had major runs in the paint

I figured out if you triple the tape horizontally in the center of the rear emblem it works perfect for the concavity of the trunk.. thumbsup.gif

Note: I used 3m Extreme Exterior double sided tape and used an exacto to trim

Probably going to complete the conversion in February, tax season, mainly because I need to replace my driver-side CV Axle so I''ll do it all at once.

anyway I guess its sort of an update, I wanted to see how long I could run the new system without upgrading the electrical.. about 2.5 days...
lol my car nearly lost all power going to work today, even though i turned the bass eq to -2 and volume offset to -3.

i have 0 gauge on it's way to upgrade the big 3. and will be adding a yellow top to the system in two weeks.

anyone have input on HO Alternators?? I'm tempted but dont want to run the risk if frying any wires with too much juice. Also I don't see the justice in shelling out for an auto GT's alternator for only 10 extra amps.

ebay offers a 160Amp HO alt. but not sure on quality

As long as the high output alt has a good voltage regulator you won't fry any electronics. Remember alt doesn't push power through electronics, all it does is keep the battery charged for all the electronics to drink from it.

When you start having dimming problems and such it's because the alternator can't keep up with the stuff on the car draining the battery. Our stock alts are very weak (manual celica I believe is 80 amps?)

160AMP alt is good enough for your system. You should look into Diehard Platinum and Sears AGM batteries. They're cheaper than the Optima and are just as good if not better. Compare Optima to Royal Purple.

Posted by: SwissFerdi Feb 3, 2013 - 1:29 PM

Manual is 70 amps, auto is 80.

...with a twist wink.gif (hopefully)

Also changing the color of my headlight shrouds too.

Posted by: rave2n Mar 12, 2013 - 3:25 PM

Looking nice!

Do have one question though, why the pop rivet/screw on the front splitters? Was fitment way off?

I had slight issue with fitment on my first set, but I just screwed them in place with the default screw points, then I caulked the living hell on the inside, then made a nice edge for the visible part, then taped it down for 10 plus hours to cure. Once cured its solid, and leaves some room for play so just the slightest tap won't bust the fiber glass.

Posted by: mkernz22 Mar 12, 2013 - 3:40 PM

I really do not understand why people mix and match the ssiii look with the trd stuff. They don't flow at all because the trd's are taller than the others. (That's just the artist in me ranting lol)

The car is coming along nicely though!

Posted by: smkr3w Mar 12, 2013 - 4:02 PM

Thanks!

They're actually screws not rivits. The fitment wasnt far off just the point where the screws are, stuck out about half an inch.. I went that route because i want to be able to remove my bumper if i ever need to.

I used to be against mixing and matching.. But I like the height of the TRDs but i dont like the look of the TRD fronts..plus they happen to boyh be up for sale smile.gif

I agree. I have a TOM's lip and OEM sides,
but i'm looking for TRD rears most likely.
I just don't like the looks of the SS-III splitters in the rear.

Posted by: Timmyface Mar 12, 2013 - 7:43 PM

Sweet man. I never really wanted trd rears, I didnt think they flowed well with the sideskirts, but this changes my mind. I fin with my ssiii rears it seems to angle the rear of the car up more, this looks lower than them thumbsup.gif

Murphy's Law took over every step of the way today....

Wind was supposed to be 3-5 mph, but was a windstorm, tore apart my temporary paint booth- while i was spraying.. Had to play musical cars to get my car into my roomates spot in the garage.

Had no choice but to spray in a cramped garage. Couldnt fix what damage was already done.

Only had about 3 and a half coats on when my sprayer took a $h*t

Now im gonna have to call up dyc to see about fixing my sprayer issue.

I guess its fine, as long as you stand 15 feet back and its dark... rolleyes.gif

Posted by: smkr3w Apr 4, 2013 - 1:08 AM

Alright so after I slept off the frustration, and took a second look.. not all hope is lost.

Its not that bad except for streaks in the doors and part of the pass side rear quarter panel.. but once i get the sprayer issue addressed I may try to fix the doors and tackle the pearly satin top coat, but I think I'll leave the matte white look for a little bit.

Posted by: cheela Apr 4, 2013 - 8:39 AM

looks good. post some close up pics once you do clear coat.

Posted by: Dennisthe10 Apr 4, 2013 - 9:40 AM

You sir, are a pioneer!

It looks great in the pics, get rid of the overspray on the tyres and you got yourself a beaut! (Im assuming that the plasti on rubber is more adhesive?)

I hope you resolve the bits you aren't happy easily enough and I'm pretty sure you wont be able to stop yourself adding the pearl when the sprayer is sorted smile.gif

Amazing first attempt, I'm now doing mine when our summer hits!

Posted by: smkr3w Apr 4, 2013 - 4:17 PM

Thanks guys.

Yeah really need to clean up the wheels..

To get rid of overspray is pretty easy-
Light overspray you can rub off with a microfiber towel.
And for the heavier bits and tyres just spray on some Goo Gone, let it sit, a quick rub and the jet setting on the hose and voila! lol

Posted by: Timmyface Apr 5, 2013 - 8:12 AM

That looks epic! How'd the texture etc come out, I never got mine smooth.

Looks good though!! Also be careful with what car wash, window spray etc you use, might eat it away!

Posted by: smkr3w Apr 5, 2013 - 11:32 AM

Thanks!

The texture isnt that bad, I think it has to do with the sprayer vs the rattle can. I mean it IS there but not the same rough texture. Also the top sides of the car seem to be a little smoother than and of the vertical surfaces.

As far as washing goes- simple green is what everyone one DYC uses.. let it sit then wash off.
Also Magic eraser does the trick on heavily soiled areas.

I'll have to be cautious with glass cleaner, dont think ammonia and dp would get along lol.

I guess I can sort of update this..
Cleaned up all the overspray and the car has now been through 2 car washes with no problems thumbsup.gif

Actually seems to be easier to clean then before.. just spray some simple green on the bug splats and heavy dirt, follow it by spraying entire car with the tire cleaner option and a medium pressure rinse and boom like new!

Lol, i had planned to dip back when dyc was offering the yellow Wagner sprayer like a year ago but was too scared to follow thru. BUT you did give me the courage to take the leap smile.gif

I fixed the gun issue. It was some dip that dried in the vaccum hole that formed a mini plastidip cork, lol.

Posted by: The_enD Apr 25, 2013 - 2:47 PM

Damn, nice Celica dude.
I was considering wrapping my car in matte white, but after seeing your results I will be research the dip subject.
I am a big fan of the DYI and exterior paint. So my idea was if I damage the fender or something, I would simply fix it up and re-wrap instead of going to someone for a paint job.

And I run into a wall today while backing up. Such a big dent in my rear right above the wheel. frown.gif

Can you hit me up with some prices?
How much was the gun and can it be replaced with a normal spray gun and a compressor?
How much did you pay for your current stage, as I am not going with clear coat and pearl, just white matte?

Thanks. smile.gif

Posted by: Syaoran Apr 26, 2013 - 2:02 AM

Yes you can replace the gun with a regular one. Plastidip sprays on like paint and dries up like rubberish plastic which is removable.

may i suggest, go to ebay and search scrap leather, you will be surprised, i did my door cars in real leather.

Thanks. When I was getting supplies and what not I bought 2 different threads, one heavy duty thread and one even thicker but it kept breaking about halfway through the stitch rolleyes.gif

So I ended up with the first thread, but after it was all said and done I like the way it came out. Adds some accent but doesn't say "look at me, look at me" lol

Sweet, I'll have to look up some scraps on ebay! biggrin.gif

Also, new shift knob!

Hot damn thats a pretty solid deal..

Just paid most of June's bills early so I'll give it a looksy in a week or two, maybe start cranking out some goods wink.gif

Plus I still gotta save some extra cash to get more emblems made, since there has been recent demand for them lol.

so much better without the wood smile.gif

Serious question, what technique did you use to wrap the shifter surround? I have tried this so many times and really struggle with the sloping bit, are you heating teh wrap and pulling in from the middle?

Posted by: smkr3w Jun 7, 2013 - 6:30 AM

Thanks.

Yeah, I used a heat gun. Used an exacto to cut an X from corner to corner BUT leave some space so that when you pull and tuck you don't have have an uncovered spot. I misjudged my cut and had to try an blend a piece in.. You can kind of see in the far side of surround in the last pic smile.gif

Thanks man, I'll take your advice for attempt number 73,000 smile.gif I'm a total perfectionist when it comes to wrapping and hate myself a little bit more every time i notice a crappy bit smile.gif This is my final piece that I cant quite nail

Smkr3w - thank you, I persevered and got a near perfect result smile.gif Totally owe you on this as nearly did the old 'cut a template and ignore the dippy bit' method which I would never have been happy with biggrin.gif

Welcome back

Well 6gc, it's been awhile.. logged on here or there but nothing much.
My car has remained the same for the past year or so..

Then on one fateful day I was driving to work and nailed a big ass rock on the highway, pulled off the road checked the rim and didnt see anything (at the time) no hissing or air leak..

however it did this:

..And it held air with no vibration or issues so i continued on to work.. came home, no issues.. drove to my second job, no issues..

Then on my way home again around 11pm not my tire, but my ENGINE went BOOM frown.gif

Towed it home, waited a couple days pulled the engine apart and checked out the damage (thats also when i discover the rim damage):

crank

rod and bearings

So after about 2 weeks of sulking and looking for a rep 5s i came up with a 2 local choices at 600k miles and one with 212k and rust in the head..
Tried looking in two nearby cities and found nothing good for a 5s rep.

Eventually went with the swap that I had been talking about for a long time..

Now I am going V6, in the form of a 1mz.

Got the motor home:

On the stand:

Popped the top:

She is CLEAN!
The bottom end is just as clean!

Taking the heads down to get resurfaced tomorrow.

Got all new gaskets, new water pump.
Will be deleting all emmissions crap.
Fidanza Flywheel is on it's way.
As well as the Southbend Clutch Kit.
Got ARP flywheel bolts.

More pics to come.

So excited. biggrin.gif

wow your engine boom did some crazy damage!

and the 1mz looks like a very good start. glad you didn't go with those rep 5s.
good luck with the swap!

Yeah it's crazy to think had my tire failed as it should have my car would probably still be running.. bittersweet really

I just don't even know... How in the Hell did it grenade like that? Anyway, at least it gave you a good excuse for a 1MZ swap.

Posted by: smkr3w Apr 18, 2015 - 5:08 AM

Forgot to post the pretty internals

All cylinders are just as clean.

And some updates......

Got the engine back together and some paint:

(cheaped out and blacked out the engine bay)

New Fidanza flywheel with ARP bolts

Didnt take a pic of the clutch/pressure plate.. its from Southbend, I spoke with Andy- great guy to deal with!

Got it dropped in!

As for the pass. side motor mount- tried thinking out of the box:
Got a Energy Suspension GM Transmission mount-

Mocked up a bracket with but of course dinner's pizza box

Cut and tacked some steel-

will be having a professional welder finish it up..

Coming together slowly but surely biggrin.gif

Yea, they're the plastic lenses from the Rayme group buy from a few years back.. i didn't put any UV protection and I park outside- where I live, we get sunshine 90-95% of the year, gonna go back to OEM glass soon

Posted by: Batman722 Apr 18, 2015 - 7:52 AM

Looks good thumbsup.gif

Posted by: Box Apr 18, 2015 - 2:25 PM

Good job on the mount. Now you just need to black out the rest of the car. tongue.gif

Posted by: njccmd2002 Apr 18, 2015 - 2:40 PM

With the mount good job. Account for sag. Once you put the rubber under stress engine may not remain leveled. Dont know how to explain. I had to compensate 1 inch in sag in mine.

Posted by: smkr3w Jun 5, 2015 - 6:22 PM

Got it to turn over after a bit of issues with the tranny, flywheel.

http://vid152.photobucket.com/albums/s166/smkr3w/11231116_10206866367279237_883877750_n.mp4
(straps were there for when we removed the tranny, pass side and driver side motor mounts were installed)

woot.gif

Just a few wires for the fuel pump, grounds and ignition and she should be good to go..
And also the a/c lines, p/s lines and lower radiator hose.

Posted by: Lamont Jun 5, 2015 - 6:31 PM

Keep up the good work, it will all be worth it once you're up and running wink.gif

Posted by: Box Jun 5, 2015 - 8:02 PM

Wooo!!!!! Almost done!!!!

Posted by: smkr3w Jul 17, 2015 - 3:34 AM

Got it started Tuesday! biggrin.gif

Had our guru make a house call to help make sure we had everything correct before initial fire up.
Before he showed up we were about 180* off on the timing in the software... /facepalm

Still need to get a timing light on it to make sure were set there.
Followed by the wideband install and then tune.

She sounds burly on open headers and untuned lol.

There wasn't as much chaos as it looks in the video, just had a temporary switch powering the ecu so our tech was telling me to shut it off but i was telling the to hit the switch is all lol...

Anyway here you go! -->https://instagram.com/p/5JkC4RmKLp/<--

I guess I should update this thread..

2 days after the above post ^ I was hit by a car on my motorcycle. I was at a stop sign and the party at fault (late 20's/early 30's male) failed to pay attention and turned into my lane and hit me head on at about 25mph. Sent me and my bike back about 20 feet from where I was stopped. The bike was totaled and my right knee took the brunt of the force tearing 3 of the 4 ligaments. Been dealing with lawyers and insurance since and it's finally almost over with pending my surgery scheduled for next week.

That being said, I've had a lot of downtime and limited funds but with the dust settling things are looking up, recently made a lot of progress and shes 95% ready!

Pretty bay:

(****ty plastic fuel filter has since been changed and a temporary shorty intake has been thrown on)

Rear header in the works:

From the front header:

Custom y-pipe:

Back half:

Flowmaster and tip:

Just idling she sounds pissed.. lol

Installed this last week:

Glove box set up (definitely needs to be reworked a bit):

Still to come:

Currently she's running stupid rich but that's due to a map that was thrown together in like 5 minutes just to get her started.
After my surgery, we'll get some tuning in and about 2 weeks or so from now she'll be cruising the streets thumbsup.gif

It's going well, the doctor cleared me for 100% weight bearing so I can finally ditch the crutches.. still have the knee brace for another couple months lol

Yeah it was an expensive venture but well worth it. I made a panel for it in front of the stock cluster. Cut a slot in the top surround and on the panel there's a tab that it pairs with. and the shroud that goes around the ignition across the top of the steering column locks it in place.
