6G Celicas Forums _ Off Topic _ Teh Official "Dude Where's My Forum?" Thread

Posted by: Box Aug 18, 2014 - 2:42 PM

Started this thread for all discussions not involving the Celica, or it can involve the Celica I suppose. This way you can talk about ANYTHING that has happened during your day that you'd like to share with everyone. Had a bad day at work, share. Bought an awesome pet rock, share. Found the best new noms ever, share. Did something to your other car, share. Anything that makes me embarrassed, awkward, and makes me turn red in general, keep to yourself. tongue.gif

Amendment: Anything remotely embarrassing makes me turn red, so...

I feel as if may days may be a bit too "adult" for this website.

So today i was working on the hemi and installed some new goodies, cleaned out the TB, installed a oil catch can, a SLP underdrive pulley and 180 t-stat. Now time to get a new tune for her.

Its newer 2005 5.7 hemi, stock 340hp as they claim. I have been upgrading little by little, when i first got her i swapped out the cam for comps cam stage 2, along with comp cam pushrods. Then installed 6.1 manifold and 6.1 mid pipes. Used 6.1 liftsprings as well Custom tune from Johan from diablosport. Its still a work in progress, hopefully before winter hits i can get correct dyno #'s. I still have a large shopping list of parts i need/want for her, not counting the other 5 cars i have that need some loving too biggrin.gif

Nice. So is it in something like the Magnum or something custom?

Its 05 Chrylser 300C, pretty nice, been upgrading things here and there. Had to reinstall a different nav unit because the joy sticks on the unit tend to break pretty quickly.

Today I replace the rear speakers in the civic. They work fine however the internet lied to me and I got the wrong size. The ones I replaced were the same size as the ones that came out which led me to believe that they were aftermarket. Now I'm going to have to drill new mounting holes for them.

Cool beans. My mom has a 3.5 Charger, she wants a Hemi Challenger though. She likes them, a little big and floaty for my tastes in a modern car though.

Possibly could make an adapter ring?

Im a bigger guy so i like the boat-ness feel to it, usually using it for longer road trips and extended drives. Otherwise i have the 944,3k, and celica for dailies.

It would be nice to have a car with adaptive suspension so you could go from soft and floaty for just driving around to stiff and responsive for more spirited driving. Usually floaty cars tend to make me motion sick though. kindasad.gif

Obviously the Super Non-Celica Edition 2000 MKVIII, where everything goes provided it's not rude! It's also great for everyone to share things about their non-Celica projects, since individual threads would kind of get lost in space. Or maybe you'd like to share a gyro with me, I like gyros.

So apparently everyone in Miata-ville seems to think they're going to want to total my car... I don't see how, it's like $1,000 in parts at the most... I guess it's body shop labour that's the issue, but I can do it myself if it keeps it from being totaled. I don't want to go through the car shopping ordeal all over again... Tomorrow is seven days, so at the earliest I'll know tomorrow. Tuesday by the latest.

Posted by: VavAlephVav Aug 22, 2014 - 6:12 PM

as long as the frame isn't tweaked and you just need hood, nose, fender, headlights I'd tell em to give the max they can without totaling it, and they can pss off and like it. smile.gif

Posted by: richee3 Aug 22, 2014 - 8:38 PM

Is everything working out with their insurance?

Posted by: Box Aug 22, 2014 - 10:54 PM

The only damage to the uni-body is where the passenger side of the core support and the tip of the chassis next to the headlight is pushed in like an inch, I could go out and fix it in less than an hour and no one would ever know the difference. I already checked the suspension and all of the chassis seams and it's all good. From behind the wheel you'd never guess it had been in an incident. Honestly it's kind of pissing me off/worrying the Hell out of me that everyone on the Miata forum says they'll total it... I'm willing to do the work myself if they'll give enough to cover parts, paint, and a small enough cushion so I'm not paying out myself in the event I have to pay a premium price for one part or another.

I should hear from them tomorrow, or Tuesday by the latest. This is frustrating. If it wasn't for the fact I was waiting on insurance I'd already have it torn down and prepared for new panels.

Posted by: njccmd2002 Aug 23, 2014 - 1:07 AM

They should shot down the forum. Nothing but incompetents. Clearly they have not seen what 1st gen celica owners have restored. Is they total it buy it back repair and sell it, unless a salvaged title does not bother you...

I really don't see how they could total it, for one I have to agree to it which I won't. Secondly it'd be a lot cheaper to pay me off for parts than to give the retail value of the car. Either way I won't make it easy on them if they try to screw me over.

Apparently insurance is off on the weekends, so have to wait until Monday or Tuesday now...

Well, that's below the lowest percentage even. 50-75% of total value in damages before it's totaled. At this point I just don't even care anymore, the more I think about it the less I want to deal with it. I've only had the top down once and that was on the way home after buying it, then I started to burn and had to put the top up. I'm not a convertible person.

Posted by: 1994Celica Aug 25, 2014 - 3:38 PM

Are you going to sell it and start your search over again?

Today I went back to college and started my second year.... hooray thumbsdown.gif

Posted by: Box Aug 25, 2014 - 4:08 PM

I don't know, just depends on insurance really. If they total it I'll buy it back and sell it to someone deserving, if they don't total it I'll keep it.

Then it's just back to the 240SX, Mustang, or Supra ordeal all over again.

Posted by: njccmd2002 Aug 25, 2014 - 5:55 PM

celica

Posted by: Box Aug 25, 2014 - 5:59 PM

It'd have to be the first generation liftback. Even with the Miata's meager amount of power I've remembered how much more I like rear wheel drive.

Really it'd be down to Supra or Mustang I suppose... V8's cause wonderful feelings inside of me.

240 with an ls swap?

Posted by: Box Aug 25, 2014 - 10:30 PM

Meh, rather have the Supra stock or swapped when I think about it. It's what I should've bought the first time around, but I couldn't find a nice one. I hurt too often to be in these cars that ride like ass.

That or FC RX-7... Or if a manual SC300 showed up... Maybe a Mustang or F-body, I do like V8's...

OH GOD IT'S HAPPENING AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!

If it weren't for having a strong aversion to automatics I'd just get a SC400.

Take advantage of it and motor through the next 3-4 years. As long as you stay focused and busy, time will fly and before you know it, you'll be crossing that stage with diploma in hand and one step closer to a better career.

I've made some dumb choices these past 8 years when it came to school; dicking around with school and didn't take it seriously, especially at a community college. :\ Went to school off and on going from full-time now to part-time. Ended up taking ~4.5 years to walk away with a 2-year associates degree because I was too focused on just working to make money to play around with it. :\ Now I'm back in school to finish the last four classes I need for my CAD certification, and hopefully by summer, I can be disciplined enough to tackle my biggest obstacle (physics) and continue to pursue an engineering degree while building my CAD work experience.

Good luck with your educational endeavors. smile.gif

That engineering physics class is the trial by fire, I think they really just use it to see if you're serious about this.
I tell people it's more like a gang initiation; its not a fair fight, and you're not going to win, they just want to kick your Ass to see if you're tough enough to be one of them.
These days you can watch the same classes taught at MIT or Yale on YouTube.

Posted by: Box Aug 29, 2014 - 2:29 PM

Yeah, a lot of it is just b.s. You hardly use anything they teach you once you're out. It's along the same lines as an engineer being stuck taking English, History, and Science classes.

Really what makes you say that?

Posted by: Box Aug 29, 2014 - 7:54 PM

The stock suspension is crap and rides worse than the Celica did lowered, the handling is ok but there's too much roll to instill confidence, the chassis flexes and moans more than a two dollar whore, and the seats are a joke and offer no lateral support. Sure you can fix most of it through bandaging, but if it was a good car it'd be fine out of the factory.

Decent gc 2.5s go for good money if I remember correctly.

Meh, I can't remember the last time I even saw a Subaru around here anyway.

The best way to buy one of those is to pay around 15-20k for an STI swapped one.

Screw that, I could get a really nice C5 Vette for that kind of money.

Not that I have a notion you'll be swayed from your current opinion, but have you driven one besides your example? I think it might just be a bit worn. The chassis isn't "stiff" from factory but it's certainly a little more tight than the Celica's. The steering feedback and push gives away that much.

I've driven a NB which was better, but that's really not a fair comparison given the fact it was some ten years newer on top of the years of improvements that had been made. It's a twenty-five year old convertible, and my first convertible at that. I imagine the slew of braces to reduce flex and the hardtop to dampen the noise would make a notable improvement.

Side thought; the steering is stupidly light on the Miata, I'd like to find a non-powered rack to convert it.

the fact that my 90 doesnt have any bracing and still has the powered rack makes me think you either A: had a ****ty example or B: have your expectations for a 2500 dollar car set way to high.
My 90 with just coils handles extremely well. flat through corners, good weight in steering and great road feel. Hardtop on makes for a great little coupe, hardtop off adds the awesome noise of the exhaust and open top feeling i know and love.

maybe you should try a few mods (which are cheap as dirt for miata's) prob starting with the all important driver mod (and more seat time)

Posted by: Box Sep 1, 2014 - 2:17 PM

B, I'm incredibly hard to please. Though after hearing everyone talk about the Miata you can't help but develop high expectations. Provided insurance doesn't total it I'll keep it and work with it more, if they do I'll try a second gen MR2 perhaps.

Posted by: richee3 Sep 1, 2014 - 2:32 PM

I think you need a C4. Yeah, the interior is lacking a little but nobody buys a Vette and expects Rolls Royce luxury. Besides interior materials it fits everything you want. smile.gif

Posted by: Bitter Sep 1, 2014 - 3:06 PM

Ew no, the C4 is pretty slow especially the early ones. Heck, the first C4's were as slow as a 6th gen 5spd GT! Later on they got better, but if you're getting one then get one with a trashed engine and LS swap it.

Posted by: Box Sep 1, 2014 - 5:02 PM

The '89-96 with the T-56 is fairly capable. '90+ had better interior, and the '92+ had the LT1 and got into the low 5's to 60. I'd really like a '92+ in black or that really nice amethyst:

I was disappointed they didn't give any specs... The headlights look too small when looking at it from the front, and the circle portion of the taillights is weird. Aside from that it looks fairly good, it finally outgrew the cute stage.

That add looks so fake. Unless something is horribly wrong with that car, it shouldn't be that cheap. If it's real I bet an apex seal or something is about to go.

Clean stock RX-7's go for a pretty penny. Most of them have either been modded to hell, or just driven into the ground. They don't fetch Supra money but there still worth a good bit of money.

I just looked on feeBay and it should be at least twice what it's posted for. Either it's a scam or there's a "1" missing.

Yep I did too. If it's real my guess is the engine is blown on it or about to blow. No one sells a FD in nice shape for that cheap.

Posted by: Box Sep 10, 2014 - 8:55 PM

If it's never been opened up it's about time for the seals to be redone. Even then, as a running driving car I'd expect at least $10K.

Posted by: richee3 Sep 10, 2014 - 9:37 PM

Could be someone who doesn't know what he has. Rolling FD shells sell for that price so if it's not running then it's priced well, otherwise its suspiciously cheap. It's worth checking out. Worst case scenario, it's a fake and you've lost 30 seconds of your life to type an email.

Posted by: Box Sep 10, 2014 - 9:45 PM

Worst case scenario is they have you "look at the car" only to be mugged and killed, of course I'm overly suspicious and paranoid.

EEEeeeeehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.....My Galaxy S3 took a dump on me about two days ago and it's out of warranty, so yeah.....I replaced it with the LG G3. I'll say this though, that phone took a beating while it was in my possession for the past year and a half. tongue.gif I'm gonna see if I can get a shop to fix it so I can extract some info on it and possibly keep it as a back-up phone.

As far as everything else, my laptop is a Samsung and it's doing fine. I think I need to break it open and clean it out though cuz it's starting to get oddly warm. My LCD TV is a Samsung and I have no complaints. Barely use it as a TV anyways. lol

put some miles (about 10) on my road bike. smile.gif Pretty happy about that, but wish it was a longer ride. Haven't ridden in a few months, so it was a good start. GF wants to do a 5K color run at the end of October, so I'm working on building up my cardio endurance again. :\

Posted by: Box Sep 14, 2014 - 1:23 PM

I don't see how people do the different runs and marathons in the middle of summer, it's bad enough just having to go outside much less run around for a few hours. redface.gif

Posted by: NgoFcukinWay Sep 15, 2014 - 10:37 AM

I don't either. it's hot and humid as balls here in Houston. I still do my cardio though. :\ But I probably won't do those marathons/runs during the summer. The 5K color run my gf signed us up for is at the beginning of November, so it should be pretty comfortable by then.

luckily we had a cold front come through town over the weekend, so it gave me the opportunity to open the taps in the Supra and to go out for a bike ride and run.

Yep, not many cars over here that're smaller than it. The iQ and Smart Car is the only thing I can really think of.

Ugh, I hate when nails, screws, etc... find their way into your tires. It's not so bad when they're old, but on a tire with lots of tread life... Road Hazard Warranty ftw.

Posted by: Box Sep 17, 2014 - 3:39 PM

Somehow a bumper cover, hood, fender, and door is $3,700 of damage. They refused to consider parts already in white to remove the cost of paint, which would still make it some $2,200... It's like $1,000 in parts off eBay at the most, they insisted on buying from overpriced LKQ... They wanted me to leave the car there so insurance could do their thing, screw that I drove it back home and I'm having insurance send out an adjuster. I have their parts list, have to get an estimate on the windshield tomorrow as the shop overlooked it. I'll just have them pay for the parts and I'll just do it myself...

Posted by: Box Sep 17, 2014 - 8:21 PM

Yep... Have to call tomorrow and setup a time for the adjuster to come by. Supposedly just have to give them the list of parts and prices and they'll write out a check. In that case should get $1,700+ which will allow me to get parts easily enough myself.

Posted by: VavAlephVav Sep 17, 2014 - 9:29 PM

PFFT, they'd more likely buy cheap parts from Sorta-Fit and still charge you top-dollar.

Posted by: Box Sep 17, 2014 - 10:42 PM

They had in the paperwork where the parts were from LKQ or Keystone. They're a preferred shop with State Farm and ALFA that I know of, so they do quality work. Which I guess was part of the problem, being an insurance claim they had to use certified used parts and just couldn't grab whatever off eBay or from a junkyard even though I requested it.

I lost two brand new tires to punctures on two different cars in one month. I was pissed. On the Celica the nail went in the edge of the tread and out the sidewall like a fishhook! The other car hit something under the snow and punched a big flap into the center of the tread.

I tried... Something about "the car has to be like new after repairs" legal bull**** totaled it out because of it HAVING to have a respray... Sad thing is my way would've been considerably cheaper for them, oh well that's government for you. If there's any light at the end of the tunnel I got them to pay out NADA average retail at $5,375 and the buyback is $560. Financially I'm well ahead, and yet I'm still upset over the tarnished title. I'm doing the buyback and will fix it myself but haven't decided on if I'll keep it solely or get something else though, odds are it'll be a NB or SN95 if I do buy something.

What's don't you like about it? I've always sort of had a soft spot for those.

Posted by: PegGTS Oct 3, 2014 - 9:00 AM

It's actually growing on me lol, mostly just the heated seats though tongue.gif

But the whole car feels really stiff compared to my car; the clutch, the steering, the gearbox. And I don't like how squished the speedometer, makes it hard to tell what speed I'm going exactly. My Celi is so slow that the speedo is so stretched out lol and it's nice.

Although I do have to say the car does have some speed to it, more than I'm used to. Something about being in 5th gear at 60km/have just feels weird lol. Oh and the 6th gear is so foreign to me, I feel like I'm going to put the car into reverse every time haha.

00-02 1ZZ's can burn oil horribly
00-02 2ZZ's are noted for the lift bolts breaking and requiring replacement, which isn't terribly hard to do.
00-02 C60 transmissions (6spd) are noted for tighter shift gates and weaker synchros
Any 2ZZ and 1ZZ can grenade the oil pump if it's over revved badly, or bend valves due to float, or both. Or if you can get it over 20,000 RPM it'll actually rip a hole in space time and travel you and the car back exactly 1 week, also known as a Backstep, but only 7 days as there's not enough power in the Element 115 fuel source to go any further.

Washed my drivers seat and steering wheel with some Lexol leather cleaner, it's been a couple years I'm ashamed to say. What a difference in how nice the leather feels again. I'll condition it all tomorrow after it's dried for 24hrs.

Lexol is some good stuff, used it to treat my leather trench-coat the other day. Now it'll be soft to the touch while looking badass all at the same time. tongue.gif

Yea, the steering wheel feels so good, but my poor seats were just totally neglected and need to be re made. frown.gif One side of the wheel though has the leather rubbed through pretty bad, she probably had hand lotion or rings. I need to find somewhere to send it off to so I can get it recovered over the winter, not sure I want perforated leather on the grips though, but after doing more reading I don't think I want Alcantara either. Probably just stick with perf leather, but I'd like something that breathes better and doesn't try to dye my hands when they sweat.

If you're handy you can re-wrap it yourself. Kits are made for some wheels, whether or not there's one for the Celica I don't know. Personally I like perforated leather or wood.

Posted by: Bitter Oct 12, 2014 - 10:05 AM

I'm probably not that handy or patient, I'd rather send it out and have a warranty. Redline makes a reasonably priced wrap and there's a recommended installer about 2 hours north of me with good prices, so I'll likely just take that route. I weld and wrench, I don't stitch.

A friend is thinking about picking up a new used car with a $5K budget. She wants something fun, sporty, and yet roomy.

Current vehicles she is considering are:

6th gen celi
7th gen celi
Acura RSX
Acura TSX
Lexus IS300
2nd gen Lexus GS300

I know someone posted mechanical quirks earlier for the 7th gen Celicas. Does anyone know of any for the other listed vehicles? Pros, cons? etc. Thanks

Of that group I'd say the 6th gen or one of the Lexus sedans. If she's getting an automatic I'd say a Lexus exclusively. Though something to consider is they get 22 mpg or so on premium. Which at that rate I'd rather have the GS400 since it has 300 hp and the fuel economy is actually better that the GS300... Plus V8 burble. If she wants a manual the third gen Integra would be good. Oooh, also the SC400 which would be my choice for an automatic. The IS300 would be good with the manual, but I don't see you finding a nice one for under $5,000. Ehh, there's the Nissan 240SX if you can find a clean one. The NX-2000 as well, but it's hard to find. Think that more or less covers the reliable and sporty cars under an import brand.

Well, there's the MR2 but it isn't particularly roomy.

DO NOT buy a cheap Luxury car, ever. Not unless you're prepared to dump a bunch of money into it to get it up to good running condition and all maintenance current.

Posted by: Box Oct 12, 2014 - 6:07 PM

That only applies to Euros. tongue.gif That's any car though, don't buy a suspiciously cheap example of any car unless you know what the Hell to look for.

What about an '03 Beetle? Her uncle is willing to sell her his ex-wife's Beetle. I heard repairs on them get costly, but i dunno how true that is.

Posted by: richee3 Oct 17, 2014 - 9:50 PM

I really think you should go for a Trans Am or C4. Cheap interiors, yes, but that can be overlooked for the V8 burble and driving experience.

Posted by: Box Oct 17, 2014 - 10:49 PM

This time around it'll be something with a V8, rather it's the 4th gen F-body, SN95 Mustang, or C4 Vette just depends on what I can find. It's such a pain to find the GM's with manuals for whatever reason, the Mustang I find consistently enough. That or say screw it and get the 2nd gen Trans Am I've always wanted. I did find a nice Firehawk, but it ended before I had gotten the check... That and there was a hardtop Formula M6 locally, that of course, was listed the week before the check arrived.......

Yep, and the effort and cost to get a rebuilt title makes it not worth it. So part out everything that isn't needed in a track car, then either keep it or sell it.

After giving it some thought I suppose I'll go with a SN95 Mustang, either the 5.0 OHV or PI 4.6 SOHC with the 5-speed. I like the 4th gen F-body more, but finding a manual and then working on them is impossible. Either that or get a classic muscle car of some sort, 10 mpg wooooo. Time to take a break from Japanese cars, and indulge in cheap interior and rolling burnouts.

If I had that kind of free cash I'd just get a C5 Vette and call it a day. I have $6,000 in cash to work with, plus whatever I can get off the Miata. If I wasn't so anti-sedan, anti-automatic, and anti-FWD this would be easier.

$6k is plenty to get a nice New Edge Mustang V8, let alone SN95.

Posted by: Box Oct 28, 2014 - 11:57 PM

I'd either get the "New Edge" or it'd be the '94-95 with the 5.0 in it. '96-98 is garbage unless it's a Cobra. Though really it's down to a preference of the New Edge looks and faster stock performance, or the 5.0's exhaust note and cheaper price. Yes, exhaust note is important. tongue.gif There was a '95 listed semi-locally but no pictures, so I'll message at a more appropriate time for pics and info. Even though there are plenty of Mustangs out there, finding one that isn't red or yellow, modified, or a convertible makes things harder. That and I've never owned an OBDII vehicle, so that's just something I'm not overly excited over. If it's not going to cause the car to explode I don't want to know about it. I really just don't like car shopping though, it makes me nervous and anxious and then for the first month I don't trust the car.

Posted by: Box Oct 29, 2014 - 10:32 PM

Sooooo after lots of thinking it's either a New Edge SN95 or another Miata, but a NA8 or NB this time around. Part of my thought process is that both need suspension work and replacement seats in order to be enjoyable anyway, but at least the Mustang doesn't need an $1,000 hardtop and immediate power upgrades. I hate liking all kinds of cars... Of course the obvious solution is LS Miata. tongue.gif

Filled up the civic today. Only $20 bucks to fill it up! It may be slow but damn it feels good to only spend $20 on gas.

Posted by: Box Oct 30, 2014 - 2:34 AM

That's what happens when you have a ten gallon tank and 100 hp. tongue.gif

Posted by: VavAlephVav Oct 30, 2014 - 8:28 AM

Gas has been as low as $2.80 around here, which makes it about $35 for the Celica

Posted by: NgoFcukinWay Oct 30, 2014 - 9:01 AM

Gas has dropped down to $2.65 here in Houston for regular 87 and about $3.15 for 93.

re-wrapped the bottom half of my back seat last night. my fingers hurt now but it was worth the pain and frustration. Imagine the before condition the same as the top half except not as torn up, but still dry and cracking.

Posted by: richee3 Oct 30, 2014 - 9:47 AM

Now do the fronts!

Posted by: NgoFcukinWay Oct 30, 2014 - 10:42 AM

I'm getting to it. Need to get my hands on a steam cleaner and hunting for the right mattress topper to add more cushion to the boostin.

Posted by: Box Oct 30, 2014 - 11:06 AM

I have to ask, why bother re-wrapping useless seats? The other question being how did seats that were never used get so torn up?

Also petrol is $2.65 for regular and $2.90 something for premium, I need fuel prices to shoot back up to make my gas guzzler cheaper to buy. tongue.gif
