just curious.
how much have you guys already spent on ur celi.
and how much work is still left?
would u call it "reliable"
bought it for $1,200. spent $1,250 on 3 parts cars ($450 for 1, $500 for another and $300). so that's about $2,450 right there. For all the parts I needed to replace, along with random sh!t, around $3,000. So that comes to $4,250 without what I paid for the car. After I sold parts from the cars, it comes down to $2625. If I included the car, it's about $3,825.
That's a lot just for having the car for only a year, but it I never got into an accident and didn't need the parts car, I wouldn't have spent nearly half as much. What I can say though, is that after all the work I did, countless hours I put in, problems I had and overcame, it was all worth every penny. I absolutely love my car.
Edit: She is reliable, but I know things will be going within the next year or so. I need a new oil pump because it's leaking, and at that point I'll do a new timing belt, water pump, and etc. Once I'm out of college, I'm saving up money for a clip, swapping in the st205 engine and converting to AWD.
I'm honestly afraid to add it up, but I'd guess... around 4k into a 1000 dollar car.
Until this year I was at about $1000 spent on repairs (not maintenance) over 5 years of owning a '94 gt. Then my ecu went and it was one of the last things I checked... ahahaha...
easily over 6K, just on upgrades (tires, suspensions, rims, strut bars under and over, lights, st205 conversion...etc including other misc parts from toyota; oem parts wise)and fixing oil leak here and there...what makes me mad is, i still don't have enough money for the cosmetic paint job and the st205 engine yet....those are the two biggest humps to jump.
I envy your cheap cars.
Last time i added it all up, it came to about $6000 on mods, $5000 for the car.
Don't know about now with all little things i keep changing or fixing. Biggest parts have been Coilovers, Rims, Headlights, Taillights, Bodykit and Exhaust.
And looking to spend another $1500 on new rims. And possibly $4000 or however much on a 3sg/t/e.
Money pit atm.
Hmmm...
Ive spent so far...
6500usd on car including registration/taxes/inspection
3000 usd on aftermarket parts
Tanabe Cat Back Exhaust
Apexi AVCR
3rd Gen 3sge cams
Berk Technology downpipe
Competition Clutch lightweight flywheel
Act MR2 clutch
AEM Water/meth injection
Larger I/C heat exchanger
AEM wideband/AF gauge.
Suspension
C-one (front) tower bar
C-one (rear) tower bar
C-one front sway bar
Whiteline Rear Adjustable sway bar
Endless front street pads
Stainless steel brake lines
Aluminum shifter bushings
Aluminum Shifter base bushings
800usd on misc repairs (so far)
Upcoming in the next 2 months
2500usd on suspension parts to include coilover/replacement parts
1000usd on body repair/paint job
1000usd on new wheels and tires....
10,000 so far.
too much
Well got the car for 750USD and have spent 200USD on parts and what not lol, I have to tackle the rust and fix my gas filler tube and a strut soon but other than that I have to say I think I'm doing pretty well
i dont like this thread
I shudder to think... Here's what I remember right off the top of my head. $6,500 for the first Celica, $250 on underglow (I was young and stupid,) $7,500 for second Celica, $1,600 for a 3S-GTE, $400 for GT4 bumper, $700 for a giant sound system which I got rid of ASAP, $300 for first parts car, $250 for project car, $1,500 for second parts car, a little more than $2,000 for the BEAMS swap, $1,400 for a second BEAMS that isn't doing anything at the moment, $460 for projectors, ~$400 for all the JDM tails I've bought, and call it at least $1,000 for various other expenses that I can't even remember right now, but in all probability it's far more than $1,000.
Just in what I can remember right now, $24,500. That's counting the cost of the cars, of course, and I've gotten some of that back each time I sold the cars or the parts. And sadly, I know that I've barely scratched the surface of what others here have spent for their cars and on their cars.
10k for it, 10k on it
$7100 for the car. Call it about 1k into regular maintenance, which includes one new set of tires, along with oil and filters and all that business. $280 for tC wheels with tires. About $450 for Eibach Sportline springs and KYB GR-2 struts. $400 in audio equipment.
22k aus on the car (6 years ago)
25k on parts alone (not inc wear and tear products like tyres, oil etc)
(never been painted)
Here's the fun story.
Bought our 2nd Celica ragtop in Jan 2007 for $4600. 104k miles. My wife drove it while I sported a beautiful '93 300zx 2+2
Replaced clutch, front driver wheel bearing, rotors, brake pads, struts, radiator, tires, valve cover seals, spark plugs, spark plug wires, and the various filters.
$1.3k for all the work? I didn't know how to do a wheel bearing or clutch back then.
Sold it in May 2009 for $6400 with 144k miles
It went on Craigslist last September for $2900, and I was pretty sure it was our old car. Bought it BACK for $2650. They had added 18k miles but hadn't taken the best care of it.
Since then, I've bought the following:
Speakers: 8" JL, 6.5 JBL, tweeters JBL, 12" sub (Kicker?)
Sony Xplod stereo with the USB/ipod deal
driver side sun visor
rear view mirror
leather door cards
good leather seat covers for the front (and had some spots repaired)
cigarette lighter
shift boot
leather armrest cover
lowering springs
front struts
stock high beams
full clear projector headlight set
two leather steering wheels
front splitters
front grill set up
Curren tails
'94 coupe spoiler
front bumper (the people I got it back from cracked the old one and the high beams)
MOMO Rev silver wheels and new-ish tires
rotors (slotted/drilled)
front calipers
brake pads
rear wheel bearing
lug nuts
HID kit
new beige top
Borla muffler & exhaust tips
Injen intake
Carbon fiber hood
BOTH c/v axles
short shifter
TRD shift knob
Newer adjustable headrests
used SSIII door sills
new SSIII aluminum to fix up the old sills
20% tinting
Of course, I bought Sugarfree's old hatchback for the BEAMS and then the full seal kit for the BEAMS. Since I'll sell the hatchback for around (or a little more than) what I paid for it, I'm considering the BEAMS as a free extra. Of course, there's already been a lot of $ and effort put into the hatchback to fix it up also.
So..... How much is all that? I don't know. At least $2k. Headlights and the top together are over $1k. Maybe closer to $3k?
Still have to repaint the car and transplant the engine. Also have to put the new headlights on. And fix some dings.
Reliable? Hopefully. We're still 25k short of what our 1st ragtop had when we sold it.
I felt bad about all the stuff I bought until I read what some of you guys have spent! I guess we're all a little crazy!
I have about $10k into the rally car... including the cost of the car ($650). Thats including everything from the new engine to all the awd stuff, fia seats, cage, etc.
The rx7... ugh $40k+ **** my wheels and tires cost half as much as the rally car total.
I do all my own work... so thats just parts not even labor.
the car was free, my dad gave it to me,
the engine swap was about $4500.... so far with all the modifications to my ST, probably around 10K with the swap... and I am no where done :\
Kevin
15-20,000k
about 5k, but that all about to change in 6 months or so.
Can not write the number here... no way. I want to survive
this thread really sucks
around 6k - Majority is swap costs, and I have alot more to buy before that engine even gets in a bay. So...add atleast another 3k, making it 9 total. More like 15k when I'm done everything.
$8500 on my celica (mint florida gt with ~60k at the time)
$900 for repairs from first hit and run
$600 for my Falken ze912's
~$500 out of my pocket for next two collisions
~$1000 maintenance costs
$4500 for gt4 clip
easily another $3000 to go to complete rebuild and swap
You Americans have it so bloody good with car and auto prices, here in Australia my 6GC has cost me well over $25000 and its almost completely stock.
car part prices may be cheaper in America but no GT-Fours! Chile has it good...all the junk from japan ends up in their shore..CHEAP
Dis iz ay Stoopit fred
$15,000- price includes vehicle purchase, parts, and importing fee. Well worth it IMO
Converted to us dollars: aprox. 55k - 37k for the car and 18k for extra stuff.
$2,300 for the car in 2010,
$900 for replacement clutch,
~$300 for brakes/oil,
$60 for replacement front tires,
$90 for lights,
~$500 dollars for new timing belt/water pump.
Thats about $4150 so far which honestly isn't that bad based on my crappy student income but I still have oodles of money to spend on what I want to do to her.
1300$ the car
500$ in repair
2000$ the swap
2000-3000$ in modification
640$ wheel and tire ...
around 7000$ for all, maybe more..$
but i give it a lotsssss of time and works
lets see..... I'll only put on major purchases.. and I'll leave out the cost of racing, gas, etc...

That looks.... basically... about the gist of it... so probably take that and add about 50%
Nearing £65'000 - including buying the car
That figure also includes bits such as wheels , seats ect that ive bought then decided to replace
as others have said...too much
how about this : cars are not a good investment!! there you happy haha
Our car's are considered luxury, not cheap plastic toys like civics and integra's. So expect to pay about 1 to 2 times more then parts you'd see for a civic.
$1200..Car included...
ive spent about 1500 on mine. love the little thing, cheap and reliable!!!
Bought the car sight unseen in 2005 for $7500 with 113K miles. Now has 150K miles and LOTS of goodies. I've got a tracking document saved with nearly every penny put into it. Upwards of $25K at this point, but that includes repairs and the like. Is it worth it? By all means.
its only worth it if you have a 3sge with a turbo lol
ha ha wish i could get one, theres one in my town for sale, guy has a 93 with a 3sge in it, ahh boy do i want it
i spent over 40,000 dollars, including like bolt on maintenance (Distributer, etc.), not including basic coolant, oil change. I gained a little back by selling some stuff. I've changed many things in my celica multiple times even though I had it, (like to test parts).
Lets see, bout her for $5k back in 06. Spent roughly $3k on mods and at least $2k on maintenance. Wound up selling for $2k last year.
Already have $3k into the new car as well...As said before on this site, "cars are the biggest waste of money", but they are soo much fun!
i should be driving an 03 SVT Cobra..
I just don't want anyone to hit my car...I WILL hit them back lol
$13k on the car (back in 2005)
$4k on the Beams swap
$5k on wheels, coilovers, projectors and all the other bits
A few more grand to go on new paint and front seats. Still cheaper than buying a comparable new car through.
cars are not an investment really in regards to fixing it up, only in terms of transportation.
for us, they are an impractical enjoyment.
LOL I spent too much too...
2500 € for the car, around 5000 € for MINOR works...
And I'm going to spend for the next year at least 1500 € for re-painting it and 2000 € for brakes...And it won't be still enought! XD
probably should have told u guys my bill first,
about 10,526 $ on the car so far.
and i my car is primered. with a bad motor, waiting to get another 5s in there. all stock with bad bouncy suspesion and no rear window on the top.
i probably have the worst / unreliable car on this site if u exclude the parts car /
about 15,000
i brought mine for 650 and to get shocks and struts and sound system ect i paid a total of 2050 usd. For my 3sgte build i spent 4883 thats for wiseco pistons, eagle rods, 272 cams, chromoly main caps, head studs, main studs, aem cam gears, turbo, stainless 1mm over valves and still not including machine shop(hes not done yet). i spent 700 on rims and tires and 1600 for paint job. So total is about 9k and im still not done lol
I think im at just shy of 3000 if you include price of car
bought my daily for 1800 in 2009. since then ive spent maybe 1200 on non regular maintenance items.
bought my DD for $1000, and spent maybe $300 on maintenence- runs great.....collecting parts to turbo it, hopefully by Christmas
2500 on the car, and around another 6k on fixes, mods, tires and a parts car. Like some one already said. still cheaper than buying a comparable newer car. all in all, totally worth it.
4k to get the car, around 650 for the springs and shocks, 400 for gt4 rims, tires for free and little interior mods for 80. and still putting money into it.
I was tallying up the receipts in my glovebox the other day. Regular maintenance since I got the MR2, plus some of the V6 built. It was somewhere around $4k.
I think all in all I am into the MR2 somewhere around $13k...
I'll let you know once it stops....oh wait it doesn't.....
The car cost me $6,500 back in march.
Tires and wheels cost me about 1k.
Just finished some repairs for about $150.
Just spent another 250 on tc rims an 30on a short throw
so im around 3300 now
over $20,000
car-10000
paint-2200
wheels-1400
clutch-900
summer tires-600
winter tires-800
kit+paint-1300
projectors-700
coilovers-500
AC repair+recharge-400
deck-350
rotors+pads-400
ebrake fix-150
short ram intake-100
quick shift-180
axles-400
$2,400 for the car. Included new tires, new timing set, water pump, new Tein springs and KYB shocks, new brakes, K&N filter, and new fluids. Probably won't do too much more than maintenance. I'm a cheap bastard like that.
Im at roughly 4000 into my 1mz swap an got to drive her 23 mile lol
best 23mile ever!!!!!!
i paid $250 for the celica, bought fenders $250. Left door 60€, a couple of interior parts about 100£, and my wife bought me a double din cd player that was 200€, so im at around 1000 bucks usd for my jdm
keep in mind i deliver pizza in mine and beat the crap out of it, but i fix it right every time i break something
since the car was purchased 3/10
$6000 for the celica
$3900 for finance charges
$4700 regular maintenance
$4100 major repairs
$1800 upgrades/mods
$9100 gas
$2900 insurance
just under 35k altogether
i have exact numbers (tax reasons)but i rounded them to the nearest hundred. since my vehicles usage is 88% (12% personal use) tax deductible i have detailed records of every penny i spend on the car
Lets see if i can remember all..
4000 car (100% stock)
2500 Paint
850 Coilovers
1000 gt4 front
270 trd wing
160 side skirts
120 trd front splitters
1000 sound system
950 fabric suede (seats, head liner, and other stuff)
1100 wheels
450 gt4 front brakes
450 drums to disk convertion
800 ST engine rebuilt
400 clutch for the ST
100 st axels
1850 3sgte
450 mr2 tranny
150 gt4 shift cables
250 axles
120 bov
80 turbo timer
140 fuel pressure regulator
And ill be spending about 1500 more to finish my 3s swap
So about $18,690 (this doesnt include All the tires ive used, gas, maintence, insurance etc) only upgrades to the celica and im sure im missing other stuff
This pic is before spending $14,690 lol
And after $14,690 or more invested. Worth it? Yes in my opinion every penny!!
Can we get any updates?
Around $4500 for....
Original price of the car
GT-4 Bumper
GT-4 Hood
TRD- Side skirts and splitters
Projector head lights with HID's
7GC Seats
Plastidip
Wheels+ Tires
Rear Strut brace
What I have left to do
Brakes
Suspension
Manual trans swap
build a decent 5s
Rare JDM parts
I'll probably have 7000-8000 invested in it when I'm "done". Its a lot but hey for 8k I get an awesome car.
I've probably wasted something like 10,000 - 15,000 over the years on this car....and all I have so far is a randomly pieced together incomplete shell that needs another 10k.
include the price of the car and i'm something like 25-30k into it
Ha same prob 10-20k over 7 years. multiple motors, bodies, paint, lights, ect.
I try not to think about all the money I've put into her lol, just call it priceless
I've kept a list. Only $1,679 including the car
$3200 - Car/Fees
$3700 - Bodywork/Paint
$1300 - Exhaust/Intake
$2400 - Suspension
$2200 - Misc. Main./Mods
$800 - Projectors/HIDs/LEDs/Kouki Tails/Clear Turns + Sides
$500 - Front Bumper, Side Skirts + Rear Splitters that im not currently using...
$14200 - Est. Total Before swap will be completed
Car is very reliable, Run on 93 Octane and Mobil 1 Synthetic/ OEM Oil Filters
Need to be done - V6 swap with Hybrid Trans
- Rims/ Tires
- Full LED conversion
I just want to shout out on how much I have NOT spent. I bought the car nearly a decade ago for $5400. The fuel line rusted out 6 months later and I spent $700 on that. I had to replace the exhaust last year for $250. I bought a car that was a decade old and have had it for nine years now and only put about $1000 in repair costs in it!
I haven't read through this thread, but i think i win(or loose?). First i bought an at200 for $12K, sold it for $2k and bought a 7gc for $17k, sold it for $15k and bought a st205 for $30k, blew the engine after a few days, imported a st205 from japan for $7.5K and finaly paying $5K for the engine swap including Haltech ECU og Spec clutch. Bought back my first at200 for $1k.
Including maintenance, i guess i have used somewhere around $60k on celicas over a period of 7 years and about a total of 130 000km. Worth it? Hell yeah!
€7500 over a year and a half for car, parts and paint for rebuild from ground up all done by myself to save money
$240 - Jdm tail lights
$7500 - Car
$150 - Oem Jdm 3spoke steering wheel
$140 - Oem 3sgte intake hose and air box + TRD drop-in air filter
$75 - Euro licence plate holder
$90 - Powerfolding mirrors (Had already bought another set that didn't fit which cost me ~$70)
$400 - Replacement Gt-Four bumper and fenders
$100 - Aluminum differential mount
$415 - Oem euro front lip
~$30 - TRD rad cap
Also spent ~$750 for new tires
Which makes a ballpark price of $9100 as of yet without the tires and all the maintenance cost.
...What hurts the most is that I know I'm VERY far from being done
Gonna repaint the whole car in black as soon as I can. The whole thing! Gonna strip the car and paint the interior also. I don't want any traces of white left on the car.
Thing is I can't come up with a limit budget for this paint job and I don't know what a reasonable price would be for a good job.
Also I can't seem to find a guy to do it
$9,000USD for car (9 years ago), I stopped counting after $10,000 USD..lol
engine stuff:
Autronic SM4 EMS $2500
gen3 3sgte $1500
machine block, overbore, deck; knife edge crank; and head work $1500
JE pistons, Eagle rods $1200
FMIC, piping, & HKS SSQV $400ish
Haltech dual channel wideband controller $200
valve cover powdercoated blue $200
HKS adjustable cam gears $200
Audi 2.0t COP coils $120
other stuff $????
non-engine stuff:
GT4 hood $600
coupe spats $200
ASA AR1 17" rims $1000
I bought the car for $5400 about 7 years ago and spent for:
-engine, clutch and other maintanence: $1300
-OEM sideskirts, SS-III rears and Euro front splitters: $250
-paint and fit these: $375
-JDM tails: $170
-17x8 Drag DR9 wheels: $650
-interior and audio: $200
It sounds a bit much but when I look to my love I think it worth it!
Wow you guys list big long lists its cute how little the number comes up to, my running build price is ridiculous lets just say i could have an R34 GT-R with the same money
regardless of anyone's answer, I think the REAL answer is "not enough"
Car--500
V6 swap--3200 with exhaust, re-cert, etc.
Suspensions--2000 (coils, new arms, etc)
Stereo--1000
Car was totaled 3 weeks ago I think (horrid with time), I got back $4800 and kept the car.
New car--800
Sale of parts from both cars--1000 credit and rising
Round 2 of V6 swap, this time with an AT200--500 in extra shizz
Total investment for 110,000 miles and two years (excluding maintenance): $2200
I thank my lucky stars that old spicbitch had good insurance. Insurance companies hate receipts, so save everything. If you get a used part, get a receipt. If you don't have a receipt, you can't get paid for it.
Pff bought the 1998 Celica ST for about €3500,- in 2012 with only 160.000 km (about 100.000 mls), bought some other rims € 400, did a complete rebuild and swap of a 4AGE 20V € 3500,- (did most things myself), some little parts € 500,-, thing i forgot € 200,-+) so that's well over € 8.000,- ($11000).
But i have a great car now, a new engine (9000 km since the rebuild) and still only 190.000 km on the car. No rust and the paint looks awesome and almost no dents/scratches or whatsoever.
Happy to read i'm not the one that spend most on his car . But prices over here are WAY higher then in the US.
An genuine Euro ST205 GT4 will cost between € 14.000 and € 20.000,-! Some imported JDM GT-4 are offered from €5.000,-.
The higher prices are a reflection on the various taxes levied in Europe.
I'm in my home country of Croatia every other year or so and a new M3 for example runs the equivalent of $180,000...
The prices on used cars are higher because the price of new cars is much higher.
The car costed around €53.000,- ($73000) over here in holland because of all the taxes, etc.
Cars are extremely expensive over here, like the fuel. A gallon costs about € 6,23 ($8,50)!
€53.000 was the new price indeed!
Between 2 hotted up Group A's - over $40K and still going
Had her just about 1 year now and added up all my receipts, not including oil changes or other fluids.
$2570.27 spent this year including 1755.77 to rebuild and swap in a new motor. add to that the $2000 I paid for the car and I'm at $4570.27 total.
I still need to spend about $400 in struts, mounts, end-links, that will be coming soon. But that's the only thing left that really needs to be taken care of.
$5,000 for a car that will be dependable for several years is well worth it to me. <3
Over 7 k I've spent one my gt4 lol bought the car for 9500 hahaha
More than you can afford pal..
I paid $3.5 for my 95 GT. 94k miles. Mint condition.
New Kumho Ecstasy 4x tire (all 4): $300
New Nrg Removable Steering wheel kit: $200 (steering wheel was a gift)
Used TRD Front strut tower bar: $210
New Eibach springs / KYB strut/ strut related components: $800
New ST sway bars: $260
New s2000 antenna, used 7th gen celi base:$40
New GT-4 rear strut tower bar: $220
New Racing Beat rear end links: $70
OEM replacement parts(maintenance), includes timing belt kit:$1500
New OEM style Vis CF hood: $650
New Poly Motor Mount inserts: $55
Used Kouki Taillights: $150
New clear courtesy light w/ Led's: $35
Lithium Ion battery (3lbs): $280
Didn't include labor since most of the work is done by me.
Planning to do a 1MZFE swap and lightweight wheels.
For fuel expenses click my Fuelly banner below.
Total: $8,270 in the car itself and parts.
With swap and wheel I'll be pushing it over 10k. Not bad considering I'll be faster and handle a lot better than those new $10-$20k cars. ;P
Bump! I’m not brave enough to total mine up again but seeing this thread does make me feel slightly better about my reckless spending.
Whatever it takes to help you sleep at night.
probably over 60k now cumulatively, not saying all of that 60k is on the car now.
