6G Celicas Forums _ Interior/Audio/Electrical/Wiring _ stuck ignition key

Posted by: BillH Jul 16, 2018 - 10:50 AM

Hello, Just bought 98 red vert as a project with grandson. Numerous problems but the worst is with the battery at full charge shifter in park the key will not move to lock position for removal. If you disconnect the battery the switch will easily turn and the key can be removed. I have read many locksmith remedies and have tried ones that apply. It has a boomerang looking TDS fob. Ideas, help? Thanks.

i dont have auto, but im pretty sure that when you put the car in park position it deactivates the solenoid that holds the key in ignition. Same thing happens when you cut power, ill have to read the electrical diagram to be sure.

Very likely the ignition lock is failed, I think it actuates a pin on the lock cylinder that stops it from rotating except in park. Once in park the pin is retracted and the key can be removed. Is there a key in ignition chime? Will the car crank in gear? Any blown fuses?

When the ignition SW is at ACC position, current from the CIG & RAD fuse flows to TERMINAL 1 of the shift lock ECU. When the ignition SW is at ON position, current from the ECU-IG fuse flows to TERMINAL 3 of the shift lock ECU.

1. SHIFT LOCK MECHANISM
With the ignition SW ON , when a signal that the brake pedal is depressed (Stop light SW ON ) and a signal that the shift lever is at P position (Continuity between P1 and P of the shift lock control SW) is input to the ECU. The ECU operates and current flows from TERMINAL 3 of the ECU to TERMINAL SLS+ of the shift lock solenoid to solenoid to TERMINAL SLS- to TERMINAL 5 of the ECU to GROUND . This causes the shift lock solenoid to turn ON (Plate stopper disengages) and the shift lever can shift into other positions than the P position.

2. KEY INTERLOCK MECHANISM
With the ignition SW at ON or ACC position, when the shift lever is at P position (No continuity between P2 and P of the shift lock control SW). Current from TERMINAL 1 of the ECU to the key interlock solenoid is out OFF . This causes the key interlock solenoid to turn OFF (The lock lever disengages from lock position) and the ignition key can be turned from ACC to LOCK position.

I think that'll get you pointed in the correct direction!

thats the diagram....

either the ecu is bad, or the switch itself is bad....

I bet the cig/radio fuse is popped.

Thanks, I'll check the circuit.

I appreciate all the info and will use the schematic to resolve, hopefully. It's been a pain to lift the hood, disconnect - lead, remove key. Radio does work. Thanks.

Thanks everyone after long days with grandson finally found the offending shift lock selenoid and a broken lock plate which is n/a used shifter resolved. Thanks again.
