to start this off, is your gas tank leaking?

Posted by: DEATH Oct 1, 2010 - 12:38 PM

check the vac lines running to your MAP sensor. If there is a hole or one is not hooked up it will put you in a type of "safe mode" that just throws tons of gas into the mix. We used to use it for a bootleg flamethrower back in the day laugh.gif

I totally thought to write check your MAP sensor but I had one of those "nahh, they'll think I'm dumb" moments. Looks like it was a legit suggestion lol

would it like say safe mode anywhere or something like that?
theres no leaks anywhere i know of.
where would i be able to find those wires to check if they're damaged.
sorry im kinda new to the gas system in cars.

thanks for helping by the way.

Posted by: Batman722 Oct 12, 2010 - 10:37 PM

replace your 02 sensor.

well if by gutted, you mean a gutted caty.... then its getting horrible mileage bc there is very little back pressure

really... i have an ST with a gutted caty and if i ride it hard it gets like 21 mpg.... take it easy and its back up around 30 mpg.... no backpressure= bad mileage

He said 5 minutes and its on E. I have a gutted cat and it is definitly not on E after even multiple hours of getting on it. In fact, it really doesn't do that much to my mileage at all. I'm pretty sure OP has a more severe problem then gutted cat.

Has to be a leak in the fuel system if you're not exagerating too much.

is 5 minutes an exaggeration? bc if its not, u have a serious hole somewhere... could b a whole in the line post fuel pump causing ur engine to keep sending a large demand signal to ur pump and the pump pushing more fuel, most of which is spilling out

ha nah not 5 minutes persay but it drains pretty fast. and like when the car is angled on a hill up or down or making a circular turn like a turn around the gas indicator rises or falls. i dont get it,

The car just has a floating device that is connected to a potentiometer. When you're on a hill or taking sharp turns the gas level changes were the floaty is.

My Corolla is pretty bad with gas readings. It fluctuates +- a quarter tank on a given trip.

Posted by: blu94gt Oct 15, 2010 - 9:56 AM

Have you actually calculated your gas mileage? That would be more helpful than just that 'it goes to E fast'

This.

Just for clarity's sake:

1. Fill tank
2. Zero odometer
3. Drive around
4. Fill tank again
5. Divide odometer reading by amount of gas put in at the pump
6. ???
7. Profit!

Posted by: d3ath2009 Oct 15, 2010 - 2:15 PM

yeah, just bc the gauge says E doesnt mean that its actually empty... my dad has a truck that always reads at about 2/3 of a tank and the odometer doesnt work so he just puts gas in it every couple of days... i would guess u more than likely have a faulty guage

Posted by: cyberblader1130 Oct 15, 2010 - 8:14 PM

When you fill up your tank, how many gallons do you end up putting in on average?

And..... How many miles do you get before you decide you have to fill up again?

Posted by: solidxsnake Oct 17, 2010 - 10:01 PM

Keep in mind the tank is 15.9 gallons. So if you're filling it with 10 when it's "empty," you've got 5.9 gallons still in there smile.gif

Posted by: mkernz22 Oct 17, 2010 - 10:07 PM

no way is it 15.9, I could have sworn I put in at least 15 or 16 gallons when it's in between E and a quarter tank...

It's a 60 liter tank = 13 UK Gal. = 15.9 US Gal. tank guaranteed.

Posted by: mkernz22 Oct 17, 2010 - 10:24 PM

oh sh!t haha so that means my mpg calculation was off because I thought I had a 18 gallon tank lol

Hahahaha woops! xD

Posted by: mkernz22 Oct 17, 2010 - 10:28 PM

big ooops! lol
i'm getting better gas mileage than i thought!

Posted by: cyberblader1130 Oct 18, 2010 - 5:05 PM

It happens, i always thought i had a smaller tank than 15.9 gallons though. biggrin.gif Good to hear your getting good gas mileage though! Do you have 10% ethanol in your gas there?

Posted by: mkernz22 Oct 18, 2010 - 5:13 PM

i believe so? lol i'll check next time im at the pump

Posted by: cyberblader1130 Oct 18, 2010 - 5:23 PM

I hate the stuff, lol. The only reason i run premium around here is cuz there is no ethanol in it. I see a bit of a difference in gas mileage even when i floor it. tongue.gif
If you do pump the ethanol mix, try gas without it and see if there is a difference in mileage. I would very much like to know if im just hallucinating or not.

From Edmunds.com:

Fuel Data

Fuel
Fuel Tank Capacity: 15.9 gal.
EPA Mileage Estimates: (City/Highway/Combined)
Manual: 21 mpg / 27 mpg / 23 mpg

Range in Miles:
Manual: 333.9 mi. / 429.3 mi. / 365.7 mi.

----------------------------------------------------

that actually matches up to exactly what I get when I drive the car....I had no idea it was 15.9 gallons though. I usually fill up after cruisin through like 14 gallons since the stupid fuel gauge needle jumps around. the light comes on and off, its so annoying.

you figure some idiot would have figured out a way to keep a car's fuel needle from jumping around when it gets lower on gas!

Just the mechanism for the measurement. The surface of the gasoline will tend to move around more when there's less in the tank which screws with the float. There should definitely be a better way to read the gas level, though. My Corolla is particularly terrible, it will fluctuate about +-1/3 tank in any given drive.
