6G Celicas Forums _ My Project _ New Addition to Our Family

Posted by: hurley97 Oct 12, 2009 - 12:13 AM

So me and Dustin (Batman722) decided to postpone the wedding another year and buy another 6th gen project instead...
That and the 99 Solara I've been using as a winter car is going to my sister in a few weeks so we needed to have one available to each of us as a 'winter beater'.
We have my green 97 ST turbo, Dustin's blue 95 GT ST205 swapped, his silver 95 ST

And let me introduce the new addition to our Celica family,
1994 Celica GT, 5spd, black interior, sunroof, Florida car without New England rust.
Very bad rod knock and a very bad radiator meant we had to have it towed home where it stayed until it was again towed to Manny, Jenn and Randi's garage.

We decided to swap in a Redtop 3S-GE Beams
We cleaned it up, timing belt, waterpump, tensioner, prepped to go in

^inside the intake manifold, taken through the throttle body

And as of tonight, it is in the car and running,

And Manny fabricated the whole exhaust, from the b-pipe all the way back. I do not have good pics of it, someone else will have to insert them.
We should be able to take some better pics tomorrow in the daylight. So far, very fun biggrin.gif

and more pics smile.gif

Day 1
starting out in the garage

pull the beat down 5s and put it where it belongs

remove ABS, install non abs lines/master

paint engine bay black

better pic

day 2
get the beams in the bay

I spy a tan line

lightweight FW then OEM Beams disk, st185 pp, and s54 tob and a wicked cool SS braided clutch line wink.gif

day 3

button things up and have Manny make an incredible exhaust.

and the exhaust - just unbelievable - I'm speechless every time I look at it.

end of day 3, drive home smile.gif

once we cranked it over a few times to get some fuel in it, it started just fine. It idles a bit high right now (about 1100) so me and Stef will diagnose it tomorrow.

and driving impressions...it's quick and pulls great all the way to redline smile.gif

more pics tomorrow in the daylight.

Actually,
Motor arrived Aug 28th
After that we figured it was probably time to get serious about finding a car
Bought the car Sept 10th
Waited for parts from the UK... did some thing to the car in the meantime
Started the swap Fri afternoon Oct 9th
Drove it home Sun Oct 11th

wow amazing, what kind of red is that, the one on the valve cover and intake, is that engine enamel or what?

Send me a custom exhaust like that, i need one, lol....

Awesome Thread. Exhaust looks great. Wish I had got the bpipe with mine.

Im curious how you cleaned the inside of the intake manifold so clean. Did you just take it off and let brake clean sit in there for a while? Do tell!! Thanks.

Yeah, i already knew it was painted cause dustin told me.

I want mine in.

Wow, that was some crazy progress... Manny, you do good exhaust fabrication! I might have to drive up there and pay you to do mine when I get ready to swap! Lol. Is the body going to stay like that since it's a winter beater or will you guys clean it up?

oh true, last thread I remembered was, you guys just buying the celica (I dont think I heard about the 3s swap though)

on another note
you've pretty much had all the celica motors: (7afe +T, 5sfe + T ,3sgte, now a 3sge beams)

awesome. biggrin.gif

Posted by: hurley97 Oct 12, 2009 - 7:01 PM

It was idling a little high the first day, as Dustin mentioned, but today it was perfectly fine. The ECU just needs a few days to relearn everything.

Just some nicer pics in the daylight...

Posted by: Batman722 Oct 12, 2009 - 7:05 PM

haha we never had a 5sfte wink.gif

after driving for a day the idle is just fine, actually perfect.

today we changed the rear sway bar bushings, installed the rear strut bar, set the radio stations and drove that thing hard biggrin.gif It feels like normal until about 3.5-4K rpms then it gets going and keeps going. It pulls right until 7200 and is quick.

next we're going to do suspension (endlinks, ball joints <-toasted, new struts, springs, tie rods) hopefully before winter, then next spring body work, paint, and wheels. The color we picked is gonna be incredible on a 6gen biggrin.gif

ah true, my fault was typing to quick.

love the engine bay though (how everything is black/dark and the bright red cover sticks out)

in your guys opinion, how does this compare to 5s-fe and the 7a-fe? since we never really got those motors over here (though there are a tiny amount of NZ new with the 5s)

Posted by: Outsider Oct 12, 2009 - 9:07 PM

Congrats on a job well done.

With the idle, mine also idles at around 1100rpm when I first start it up. As the engine warms up, it drops back to around 800rpm.

Looks great guys! Can't wait to see what color you decided to paint it.

Why are you still using the stock air box?

it's definatly faster and more responsive, much much faster in above 3-4k rpms

QUOTE (Hanyo @ Oct 13, 2009 - 5:35 AM) *
very impressive stuff.

Why are you still using the stock air box?

thanks. The intake is kinda touchy with the AFM, too much air and it runs rich, too little air and it runs lean. We just went with a K&N drop in filter which is just fine for us, for now. The other option is to get a CAI or short ram for a 01 v6 camry with the AFM adapter, but it's very important that the pipe diameter is the same as stock or the rich/lean issue comes up.

QUOTE (trdproven @ Oct 13, 2009 - 11:36 AM) *

yes, it's just a valve cover cover. I haven't tried it on a 5s but I'd have to say I don't think it would fit.

QUOTE (Rusty @ Oct 13, 2009 - 1:42 PM) *
on another point what are you using for the guage BEAMS or a modified preBEAMS one?

modded non beams tach. We didn't want to go with Beams white face gauges so we are using a http://www.dakotadigital.com/index.cfm/page/ptype=product/product_id=127/category_id=287/home_id=59/mode=prod/prd127.htm and the tach works just fine. I do see a little jump with the needle now and again but nothing serious.

njcc, I'll PM you a pic.

yes, it's just a valve cover cover. I haven't tried it on a 5s but I'd have to say I don't think it would fit.

The valve cover is more like a 3SGTE valve cover, it has the inner gasket with the cams almost individually housed, like this...

The 5S valve cover doesn't have the holes that the valve cover cover screws into or the oil cap in the right location. There's probably a few other problems you'd run into but those are the most obvious without actually fitting it to a 5S.

I need some type of shield on mine. I think heat keeps killing my alternators as they last about a year before crapping out. A low profile one like that would be nice.

what color is the car? it looks like a dark red? yah. stock? probably. just wondering.

Posted by: presure2 Nov 29, 2009 - 9:52 AM

last night, i finally got to drive dustin and steffs beams powered celica for the first time.

i figured i'd try and do i quick write up of my impressions of it, to try and give the guys (and gals!) that dont know what to expect, or are trying to decide if the beams is for them an idea what it feels like.

first off, the car is VERY behaved around town, in low throttle, low load situations. it feels pretty much like a 5s if you keep the revs low, under 4k. it drives just like stock, and since they used a stock clutch, the driveability of it is just like a stock car. fantastic.
once you start to get higher up in RPM range, the motor REALLY comes to life, and where the 3sge shines, IMO. it just loves revs. the longer you stay in gear, the faster it gets, right up to the 7250 redline.
once you hear that motor sing @ 7k RPM, you just wanna keep downshifting.
with a 5s, you tend to want to shift a little early, to stay in the meat of the powerband. the 7a, even more so. the 3sge is the exact opposite, it just begs to be reved up to redline.
when you mash the throttle down, the intake note comes up, and that motor just sounds amazing as it rips up the RPM band, screaming its way to redline.
i found myself downshifting into 3rd on the highway, and doing redline pulls just to hear the motor sing.
the car feels strong, and pulls well.
if your looking for brute power, or neck snapping torque, then you want a 3sgTe, because thats not what this motor does.
power delievery is VERY linear, but still to me seemed to have a nice jump in power from ~5000rpm to redline.
IMO this motor would be absolutly awesome for autocross. the higher redline of the 3sge makes the short gearing of the tranny alot more useable, and the LSD works fantasticly.
i love the way it allows power delievery from mid corner to exit, where the car normally wants to just push out the LSD really helps pull the car out of the corner straight.

overall, if you like a high reving, performance based n/a motor, that can act like a 5s, and be great around town and daily driving, you'll love the beams 3sge.
smile.gif

Posted by: trdproven Nov 29, 2009 - 9:57 AM

I had a feeling thats exactly what it was a better version of the 5s. do you think you can get a 5s to a beams equiv if you get cams, headers, exhaust, wires, plugs, intake, port polish, rebuild? naaa not even close. maybe only like 160 at most appr.

Posted by: presure2 Nov 29, 2009 - 10:40 AM

no.
the head design on the 5s is meant for low end torque and economy, the ge head is performance based.
the 1000rpm diffrence in rev limit is huge, and the powerband of the 2 motors are totally diffrent.

More about the wheels

Before
two had some curb rash, one was very bad. the other two were just fine...

Dustin stripped the paint off all of them, I didn't do it very well
Then I did some filing and sanding, globbed on some aluminum putty...

did even more sanding and filing and sanding again...

I just need to do a little more overall sanding on two of them and they will be ready to go for powder coating...

I bought the powder from powderbuythepound.com, they shipped extremely fast
Color will be Super Durable Wet White:
ULTRA SMOOTH FINISH WITH THE HIGHEST GLOSS LEVELS !! PROVIDING LONG TERM RESISTANCE TO CHALKING AND LOSS OF GLOSS USING HIGH-PERFORMANCE PIGMENTS TO PROVIDE LONG TERM COLOR STABILITY ~ SUPER DURABLE WET WHITE ~ POLYESTER~GLOSS LEVEL 95+5% ~ CURE TIME = 400F/10 MIN

And on another update note,

I installed the hood struts last weekend the day after the TRD strut bar pictured.
Need to get a good updated shot of the engine bay.

Brought the car to work today to fix a few things with the car.
Both lower ball joints were blown out and really noisy, put new ones in
Both front tie rod ends had some play, installed new ones today
Driver side axle was clicking, put another one in
Right rear adjustment arm bushings were blown, installed another arm
and alignment

all those things made a big difference and make me feel so much better about the car now. I feel like we are making some progress now.

Posted by: BonzaiCelica Jan 10, 2010 - 4:46 PM

hell yea drool over the engine bay pics!! bowdown.gif woot.gif I love the fact how you guys repainted the intake manifold and valve cover. Oo and white powder coated rims. white on red reminds me of the 5th gen, sort of like rally style. so which one is faster the beams or your green celica?!

Gorgeous, absolutely gorgeous.

How hard was it to sand the wheels? Any machine tools used?

Posted by: hurley97 Jan 11, 2010 - 9:48 PM

Yeah I just used a little hand held electric sander at the end, that just made it a little easier but wasn't really necessary.
Mostly a file, aluminum putty, and a lot of sand paper.

Posted by: SwissFerdi Jan 11, 2010 - 9:49 PM

Haven't heard of putty ever being used, but I guess you need to if the rash is really deep. Mine might be just as bad as yours on a wheel or two. kindasad.gif

Posted by: hurley97 Jan 11, 2010 - 9:57 PM

Yeah I found it a long time ago at the Japanese marketplace in Jersey and bought it cause I thought I could use it one day.

I used them on my wheels that are on the green car before we painted them. I had a lot left so I used it on these. Its very nice stuff, it gets very hard yet says very sandable and easy to work with.

Posted by: SwissFerdi Jan 11, 2010 - 10:53 PM

Well we aren't done yet, the car still needs bodywork and paint. The motor swap itself was not bad at all, its all the other little details that start adding up quick.
I think my green car, as a whole, has cost me around $12-15k in upgrades over the years. I'm not sure about Dustin's blue car but I'm sure its pretty close to that and I'm sure when this car is all said and done it won't be too far under the other two.

$10,000+ invested into the turbo setup, as far as I know. It'd be dumb to sell that.

So me and Dustin (Batman722) decided to postpone the wedding another year and buy another 6th gen project instead...
That and the 99 Solara I've been using as a winter car is going to my sister in a few weeks so we needed to have one available to each of us as a 'winter beater'...

Posted by: hurley97 Jan 17, 2010 - 11:11 PM

Manny welded in a new resonator today. The beams was way too loud, we actually got pulled over a few days ago because of it.
So I bought a http://vibrantperformance.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=1021_1033_1055&products_id=46. It's much better now, I'm happy with the results.

QUOTE (presure2 @ Nov 29, 2009 - 6:52 AM) *
last night, i finally got to drive dustin and steffs beams powered celica for the first time.

i figured i'd try and do i quick write up of my impressions of it, to try and give the guys (and gals!) that dont know what to expect, or are trying to decide if the beams is for them an idea what it feels like.

first off, the car is VERY behaved around town, in low throttle, low load situations. it feels pretty much like a 5s if you keep the revs low, under 4k. it drives just like stock, and since they used a stock clutch, the driveability of it is just like a stock car. fantastic.
once you start to get higher up in RPM range, the motor REALLY comes to life, and where the 3sge shines, IMO. it just loves revs. the longer you stay in gear, the faster it gets, right up to the 7250 redline.
once you hear that motor sing @ 7k RPM, you just wanna keep downshifting.
with a 5s, you tend to want to shift a little early, to stay in the meat of the powerband. the 7a, even more so. the 3sge is the exact opposite, it just begs to be reved up to redline.
when you mash the throttle down, the intake note comes up, and that motor just sounds amazing as it rips up the RPM band, screaming its way to redline.
i found myself downshifting into 3rd on the highway, and doing redline pulls just to hear the motor sing.
the car feels strong, and pulls well.
if your looking for brute power, or neck snapping torque, then you want a 3sgTe, because thats not what this motor does.
power delievery is VERY linear, but still to me seemed to have a nice jump in power from ~5000rpm to redline.
IMO this motor would be absolutly awesome for autocross. the higher redline of the 3sge makes the short gearing of the tranny alot more useable, and the LSD works fantasticly.
i love the way it allows power delievery from mid corner to exit, where the car normally wants to just push out the LSD really helps pull the car out of the corner straight.

overall, if you like a high reving, performance based n/a motor, that can act like a 5s, and be great around town and daily driving, you'll love the beams 3sge.
smile.gif

this is exactly what driving a 7th gen is like. its a wonderful thing having VVT tuning the cams to provide power through the RPM range. I just love looking at 7th gen dynos and seeing the HP curve continue to rise all the way to redline. now that more and more toyota engines are coming with dual VVT the tuning can only get better. i wonder if attaching a camcon on the beams will make more power. we have shown time and time again that with VVT tuning you can gain more power. take mine for example, i gained over 100 HP just tuning VVT

Posted by: BonzaiCelica Jan 18, 2010 - 12:28 PM

i already asked if adding a camcom will give allow for better tuning. but according to the guys over at the beams forums, its not worth it, and is just better to go with a stand alone.

Experimenting with the Beams... I think I need a little more time to decide if I like it or not
It looks fine right now, my concern is that when the car is finally painted and the body looks good will the plate holder make it look unfinished? Of course it will be painted professionally and properly but I'm just afraid the difference in color might make it look like we just threw it on afterward and haven't painted it yet. I know the cf plate holder would look more finished but the way I feel about cf is that it should be functional (meaning the part should actually weigh less) and be painted.

Also installed a 7th gen non-power antenna today, just need to get a mast for it now.
Dustin read through some how-to's where people said something about using the 6th gen base and having to notch something and shim something else to make it all fit nice, I just used the 7th gen antenna base and ornament (black thing on the outside of the car) and it took about 10 mins and all fit perfectly fine. The bracket inside just needs to be loosened and turned the opposite way, but I'm not too worried about that, I'll get to it eventually.

Posted by: SwissFerdi Feb 1, 2010 - 5:20 PM

I like it, but CF would look better. I've thought about rattlecanning my license bezel black since it looks good on silver cars, but yours pretty much came out the way I had it in my head...a bit unfinished, like your OEM part was broken and you took this from a black 6GC.

Go for CF.

QUOTE (SwissFerdi @ Feb 1, 2010 - 5:20 PM) *

yeah, but I think you get that feeling because the rest of the car is a POS, cause thats what gives me that same feeling. If it was a good looking car with a good looking paint job would you still get the same feeling?

Now, the color we are going to paint the car is going to be a bit darker and metallic. So a darker, nicer red with the black plate holder and we are thinking we want to do a black roof also.

Posted by: Culpable04 Feb 1, 2010 - 7:05 PM

you just need more black accents to make it look like it belongs there, being the ONLY black part in the car is what makes it look out of place.

great work so far Steph !

Posted by: 95st-celica Feb 1, 2010 - 8:00 PM

i dont think it looks all that bad actually...i think it looks like its supposed to be that color...and it breaks the ass end up a little bit as well....yea red would look good, but i think black looks fine....i would leave it and have the rest of the car painted...i mean...if carbon fiber isnt your thing...i would stick with black...maybe a set of SS-III riser blocks in black to help accent it? i dunno if your into them or not...but over all the car looks great...and the back plate looks just fine in black

Posted by: BonzaiCelica Feb 1, 2010 - 8:56 PM

that is the euro style license plate bezel. thats why it looks weird...

Black roof would be AWESOME. But no, I don't think that's it. I don't think it would look good on mine either, and black and silver look great together, plus my tails are smoked. I can try though.

Posted by: hurley97 Feb 2, 2010 - 7:55 AM

Dustin's idea is to go black roof anyway cause it'll look great regardless... then get a second euro rear plate holder and have one painted red with the rest of the car and have the other painted black with the roof. Then we can try the black one on for a while and if we don't like it switch to the red one. I think that works for me.

It pretty much did, for a left hand drive Celica anyway. No real customization in mounting it or anything. Only wiring changes and the brake master cylinder was in the way of the canister vsv mounting point on the air intake hose.... but the JDM Guy family thanks you anyway biggrin.gif

update?

Posted by: Batman722 Jun 2, 2010 - 10:14 AM

a week or so ago we dropped it with TRD springs and KYBs, today I'm gonna put in some RacingBeat solid endlinks smile.gif
Our 7gen wheels are off to powdercoat and we should have those back in a week or so, then new tires mounted.

we've got a 97 front end on and we made a deal to get the bodywork/paint done probably by July.

Posted by: hurley97 Jun 16, 2010 - 4:04 PM

7th Gen white powdercoated wheels and new Goodyear Eagle GT tires are on, I also installed the endlinks today.

I also ordered new quarter windows yesterday. All non-moveable windows will be removed for paint, quarters windows and front windshield will be replaced with new ones, rear window will be the one from the parts car.

Posted by: presure2 Jun 16, 2010 - 4:21 PM

the white rims are gonna look SMMMOOOKKINNN hot against the new paint.
JDM Guy approved. thumbsup.gif

Posted by: hurley97 Jun 17, 2010 - 6:42 PM

I'm second guessing the rear plate bezel being black. I think we are still going to do the roof but I'm not sure about how a black plate surround will go with the white wheels... confused.gif

i need to come up sometime and get a first hand experience.
if i would ever do a swap. this is what id do.
and i am stunned as to how fast you got it in ( thats what she said )
i shouldnt be though seeing as how you guys where working on it

car looks cherry.
rims are white so i am obligated to love it.

what is the weight difference btwn the 3s and 5s?
thats the one thing ive been trying to search around for?

Posted by: block Jun 19, 2010 - 2:11 PM

nice swap. i love the beams engine. would this swap be a direct swap or is it like the 3sgte where you need to do some harness work? this motor bolts up to the existing 5sfe components (ac, air box, etc)? nicely done.

Posted by: hurley97 Jun 19, 2010 - 4:42 PM

I'm not sure about the weight difference Mike, but I agree the Beams would be your kind of motor.

There is a little wiring involved but not much, less than the 3rd gen 3SGTE. AC works fine, I think the airbox is slightly different, the throttle body is bigger so the hose and the opening from the airbox is also bigger, and you need the hose that connects the throttle body to the box cause it has the opening for the MAF sensor, the GT mounts work fine. But if you get a motor set it should come with everything you would need.

Me and Dustin discussed it and we are ditching the black plate holder and doing that body color but the roof will still be getting painted black.

Posted by: SwissFerdi Jun 19, 2010 - 4:52 PM

This would be dependent on your budget, but...if you were to do the roof black, I'd panda the whole car and do a CF hood and hatch. Both OEM-style, no need for silly vents.

as to how much the weight difference in engine weight would be I'm guessing the 4th gen 3S-GE, would be slightly heavier. I say this becuase although it has direct fire ignition, (if thats what they are called) it doesnt have a distributor, but on the other hand it does have helical lsd (that is, if it is from an ss-III celica, and quite possible a viscious lsd if it is from a ss-II, still no confirmation on that though) but thats what i would think. I dont know anybody else have an input. is the block design of the 3S-GE and 5S-FE the same? lighter head on the 3S-GE? who knows???

i'm going to wager that the 4th gen 3s-ge is the lightest of them all, the 5s-fe for example has taller block, its a few mm, but thats a fair bit of cast iron, the crank might have more meat on it aswell but i dont know, also no dizzy, the inlet manifold on the beams is a bit simpler aswell so could be lighter, i doubt at the end of the day there is much in it. Thats all gearbox aside though.

rusty I was talking about the 3S-GE Beams vs the 5S-FE. not the 3S-GTE vs the 5S-FE

here are two website that specify weight specs for ss-III celica. to totally different weights??? we will never know? http://www.toyota-celica.net/spec/1999.1/5725/ , http://www.carfolio.com/specifications/models/car/?car=185592 Im leaning more towards the 2,668 pounds

Posted by: hurley97 Jun 23, 2010 - 8:04 PM

Too bad I don't have the receipt from the shipping company, that may have had a general idea of the weight of the package/motor.

So the Beams got a new (/used) wheel bearing Sunday, steering rack and alignment today, feels much better now.

Ready for bodywork and paint when you are Manny! biggrin.gif

Posted by: Rusty Jun 24, 2010 - 12:48 AM

haa whoops

Posted by: hurley97 Jun 30, 2010 - 9:18 PM

bodywork has begun biggrin.gif

The car has a lot of small dings and dents all over the place. Not too bad. The passenger side door didn't line up with the rear quarter very well. The drivers side fender had splits in it at the wheel well lip, pass side fender was aftermarket and didn't really fit too well. The plan is to use the oem fender from the parts car on the pass side and buy a new oem fender for the drivers side. Hopefully the rest will be pretty easy. Lots of sanding and priming and more sanding. Plenty of time, the car isn't scheduled for paint until Sat July 17th.

(If all goes according to plan) All non-moveable windows will be removed by the Thursday before paint, Manny will drive the stripped down car to work on Friday for the last bit of prep and taping. Paint Saturday and left over the weekend to dry. Monday AAA will go to the car and install the windows and we should hopefully be able to pick it up that afternoon and put everything back together.

pictures from last night (friday)

since then the other quarter window is out, rear glass is out, plate bezel is sanded, mirrors are off, both fenders are fitted, both sideskirts are fitted.

Things left to do: We just need to take the cowl and wipers off. Then Manny needs to fill in a few unwanted holes, finish sanding, prime and block the whole car, and paint the jambs before Friday when he takes it to work for paint on Sat.

I was fortunate enough to get to see this car in person Monday... I have to say, it's easily the cleanest Celica I've seen in person. It's so complete, inside and out. Dustin and Stef have put a lot of work into the car and it really shows thumbsup.gif The color is absolutely perfect on a Celica, and the attention to detail was apparent. I was satisfied with my Celica until I saw this one and learned exactly how much more these cars are capable of. You guys have got this car set up perfect in every way.

expensive to replace the sensors that always break off in the hubs, removed it on Dustin's blue Celica and it didn't come with my Green one, we don't need it.

It is fairly dead on forums now a days. I check in every once in a while. Looks like you and I are pretty close to each other if your profile location is accurate
