My new job pays me nothing so.......I am thinking about making some downpipes to get some extra money and to help out the celica community. I am looking to see how many people would possibly be interested in these. The price for them will be way lower than any other brand out there. $200 is what i think i can make them for. I am going to be making a prototype for some MR2 guy and i figured i can keep making a few more as long as there is interest.
I am going to make them out of 2.5" mandrel bent aluminized steel. "That is supposed to be the best setup for engines under 300whp". Each one will be coated with 1200 degree paint (black or silver option). Stock o2 sensor location will be the same. I will put up some pics after the first one is done but you can see the 3" dp i made for myself a while back on my profile. The design will be really similar but 2.5" pipe will be used this time.

So how many of you performance junkies would be interested?
I need to see what kind of number i am looking at so i know if i can order parts in bulk to make these things.

Also: I can still make the 2.5" midpipes for the 3sgte and 5sfte to compliment this dp mod. I might as well order parts for them at the same time if there is interest there too????

Note: thses are not for sale yet ....so i think this is the right location for this post?

sounds good.. but a littlw OT question.. can you also make a turbo exhuxust manifold?
celicaspeed
I want one but I want 3" dp!But I need it with 2 bung holes because I have a wide band 02 sensor. If its possible let me know?
presure2
dg, im in for a DP as soon as you start making them again. can i get it with an extra bung for my egt gauge?

I am only going to make the 2.5" dp's (no 3" for now) and yeah i can make them with the extra bungs for wide band, and egt. I need to find a place that sells the bungs that i need thats all.
if anyone knows where i can get the correct bungs let me know!

I'd be interested but the main concern I have is that the Exhaust Depot DP is stainless steel and thats a downside to the $300 KO which i was interested in, how would yours compare to the 2.
lagos
dave, id be into getting a 3in DP from you.

even KO racing, the place that sells 2.5in DPs says that in a celica a 3in is best, but in an mr2, a 2.5 is fine because of the short exhaust the mr2 has.
Supersprynt
i'd opt for 3 also.
DG_Performance
Am i reading the wrong info or ???? Ive read that the 2.5 is best cause it is equal size of the outlet of the turbo. but if you are going to be over 300 hp then you want a 3".

As far as the question about comparing to other dp's i dont really understand what you are asking..... compare the other two to what aspect?
feneral answer:
mine will be aluminized mild steel (very strong and hold lot of heat)
...not stainless(which is easier to break and crack)

presure2
hey dave, i actually have the bung that came with my egt gauge, if you want i can mail it to ya.. wink.gif
about the 2.5 vs' 3" debate, the 3" DP will always be better than the 2.5" no matter the power levels, but there is MUCH less of a diffrence at low power levels (stock to about 250)than at high power levels (300+), so its more a matter of goals to me wink.gif
let me know when your ready to start production man.. biggrin.gif
DG_Performance
if you got the bung ...... mail it to me and i will weld it on for ya.
i still would like to know where i can buy some bungs for the other people who need them on the dp's.
i will be making the first dp hopefully this week if the materials all get here in time.
then pics will follow and you guys can will be able to buy em

for a turbo, the best exhaust is no exhaust. thats why i want to go 3in all the way back. my goals for the car is to make it as fast as i can, and i dont want to get something that will be too small later on. so let me know if you are willing to make a 3in one.

id also be into getting a full 3in exhaust from you, if you are willing to do that.
DG_Performance
Well, if you use physics to figure in on some things.... the 2.5" exhaust will flow the air out faster that the bigger 3" setup. the difference will be in the velocity of the are traveling through the different diameter pipe. you will have less backpressure in the 3" pipe but the air will actually travel out faster in the 2.5".
more torque in the 2.5" setup too.
i only went 3" on my setup cause i am planning to do some major motor work down the road and did not want to have to make another dp when the time came.
anyway.... i am only making 2.5" downpipes and can not make any other exhaust setups till i move to a new location and have a better garage to work in. eventually i plan on making lots of parts to offer to the celica community but do not have time, materials, location, and money at the moment to make this happen.

Right. Be very careful here.

On a 3rd Gen 3SGTE (and I think this applies to a 2nd gen as well), you can actually make the exhaust system too good.

With no backpressure at all from a 3" DP mated to a decent performance exhaust the wastegate can sometimes not open in time, and you boost spike. Or boost creep.

Best case, you bounce off the FCD.
Worst case, you run out of fuel maps, run lean and melt #3 piston.

My 3" DP goes on on Thursday. Mated to a full Blitz Spec NUR system.
I am concerned about boost creep. Very concerned.

I'll let you know what happens.
lagos
most people with an upgraded downpipe end up creeping up to 14psi on a 2nd gen motor. a good fix for this is to disable the TVSV and add in a boost controler. with TVSV disabled, youll be put in low boost mode (7psi) and even with boost creep, youll probably only hit 10psi or so.
DG_Performance
i thought boost creep was when the wastegate would open a little sooner that it was supposed to.....meaning the boost in your car would fall off a bit. anyway, ive been running 14-15 psi of boost for a long time now.... i have even got up to 18-19 psi when i was not paying attention in 5th gear. There is no way that anything under 12 psi of boost should be a problem for any 3sgte in my point of view..... unless you are running a top mount with no hood scoop in 90 degree heat on 87 octane.
But who would do that wink.gif ???????

Bottom line: A down pipe is not going to cause problems by itself.

I'm honestly up in the air between 2.5'' and 3''. I dont plan on doing MAJOR motor work I would like 300hp at the crank. IMO 2.5'' will suffice for this. Whats the stock DP in the first placle 2''?

Dave I talked to you bout the midpipe - is there any price break if I purchase both from you?

Nah. Creep is when the wastegate can't open enough. So you get more air. Meaning more power. Meaning more boost. Keep going until detonation.

Boost should rise to a peak and then stay rock solid ideally.

And have a search at GT4OC. Bosst creep with free flow exhausts (including a down pipe) is fairly well documented. It's not terminal, you just hit fuel cut.

Super,
I will see what i can do if you want both dp and midpipe.... i really can only get a lower price if a bunch of people want stuff. I have to pay full price for all the parts and the only way i can get any money knocked off is to buy in bulk.
I will see what i can do,

Well after reading this:
http://alltrac.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1868
I think I'm just going to go 2.5''.
DG_Performance
Yeah that "Conrad_Turbo" guy said exactly what i was trying to say but his version was a little better than mine was.
Same point better phrased!!

and think of this also...... the outlet of the turbo is 2.5" right! so the air flow straight out of the turbo directly into a 2.5" dp is a perfect match. Remember only in high hp numbers is a 3" setup better due to the rise in air flow going into and out of the engine.
