what happens to a ecu if you forget to undo the battery cable when you install it?

Its just like - not using a running car to jump start a vehicle, always use a lone battery to jumpstart to prevent damage to both vehicles computers.
Damage doesnt necessarily happen, but it has happened to people before. You just do it to protect the electronics and eliminate the chances of shorting something out. I wouldnt worry about it unless you heard a pop or smelt something burning when you hooked it up.

What happened to the JDM computer? Did it burn a wire on your harness that is killing power to the USDM computer? You should assume if it cooked the insulation on that wire that somewhere it blew out a fusible link or fuse and killed that circuit

Have you tested the ground and power yet?
