Full Version: 3sgte 2inch dual exhaust?
6G Celicas Forums > 6th Generation Celica > Forced Induction

Gonna be swapping very soon, already have EVERYTHING except the engine itself which ill be getting in the next 2 or 3 weeks.
my car is lowered (slammed) and I only have about 3 inches of clearance under car. Im thinking of moving the cats up towards the front or just deleting them, and then doing 3 inch exhaust tucked into the driveshaft tunnel that goes to a y pipe that splits up into 2 inch dual exhaust for the back half of the car, that way I can go over the rear suspension and have 2 small mufflers that won't get torn off if I hit a bump.

Your thoughts?
4-eyed-freek
If your not concerned about hp gains then i wouldn't see a problem, but if it were mine i would stay 3in all the way. I feel the 2 inch may cause a restriction, just a thought.

A single 3 inch from what I've read online is equivalent to having a 2.25" dual exhaust as far as the flow rate, all other things being equal.

So running a 2" you will have some limitations as far as flow rate and performance. It'll basically be like having somewhere between a 2.5" and 3" single, which is fine if you plan on doing nothing to the engine down the line.

Shortest, widest exhaust will always make more power than the inverse. It's all about how fast you can get the gasses out of the system.

Edit:
This should help some

I know about exhaust and flow rates, I actually thought a dual 2inch would be better than a single 3 but ill do more research. Just trying to keep my hellaflush intact. Plus I figured 2 mufflers would be able to cancel out more noise
Arturio55
That article says dual 2.25 inches can support up to 371hp, I wouldnt need any more than 350. Itll prob take me a year or 2 to get bored of that much power. By then ill be upgrading to a ball bearing turbo

Another option I think that could be good for your situation is an "exhaust cutout".
Gives you the option to run your 2" piping which I think will be restrictive for a 3s, but if you simply open it up you can up your boost/power.

Ive read about those but dont know if I could trust a remote controlled exhaust.
just to be hard headed, I think im gonna run a y pipe and 2 or 2.25inch dual exhaust from there. If it doesnt run how I want then ill simply get rid of it. It it turns out to be a horrible idea then ill forewarn the entire 3s world from now on. If it works then yolo

Yeah the cutout is simply a y pipe with nothing on one end. I've had mine for over a year, still works like the day I bought it. I know a few other people that have had them on their 3s as well for even longer.
If you do buy one, I wouldn't buy the ebay one obviously you get what you pay for.

Im not a fan of the straight pipe sound. If im gonna boost my balls off I'd rather do it with class. Everyone keeps talking about back pressure with a y pipe and dual from there back but its not a big deal. Ill have a turbo and small piping. I just need one person with knowledge and experience to give me the final ok my conscience needs to go forward with it
4-eyed-freek
you do realize that the turbo it self is a restriction. even if it was a straight pipe it wouldn't be all that loud, plus back pressure on a boosted car is a big deal. its nothing like a n/a car, the turbo needs to exhaust the gasses as easily as it takes air in other wise your thoughts of ''boosting your balls off'' will not work.. and if your looking for people with knowledge, this site if full of great people with a lot of experience and knowledge.

Yes I understand all of that but im gonna have a 3 inch exhaust that split up into dual 2.25. If anything dual 2.25 is more free flowing that a single 3 inch
4-eyed-freek
Yeah it will flow well, but if you were to do a 2in all the way or the majority of it will most likely cause a lot of back pressure. just a question, why dual exhaust? the rear of the US celica is pretty open underneath as apposed the the gt4 which has a hug fuel tank in the back only allowing the single exit to really work the best.

I was never gonna do 2inch all the way.
And I was gonna chose a y pipe with dual 2 or 2.25 inch because I could actually fit it over the rear suspension and fit a smaller mufflers because my car is slammed on megan racing coilovers. I do not want to get my exhaust ripped off if I hit a bump in the road.. my friend (silverceli) has a swapped 94 GT with full 3 inch exhaust that goes under the rear arms. his is exhaust only 3 or 4 inches off the ground. His car is only on lowering springs. My wheels are tucked. Big difference
4-eyed-freek
I get that your car is slammed, and the fact that you don't want your exhaust scraping or ripped off. have you thought about running over the rear control arms like factory with the 3in? i cant remember off hand if there is a big difference but im running a 3in over the rear control arms on the gt4 with no problem and im running trd coils.

How hard was it to run the exhaust over the arms? And what kind of muffler do you have? Do you scrape? Also I dont want mine too loud. I love music too much. 2 mufflers are better than one.
Email me pics of your setup if possible. Arturiofleuristal@gmail.com
lol not to sound like a d**k but im sure my car is lower than yours
4-eyed-freek
i know your car is much lower lol the gt4 runs the exhaust along the drive shaft half way tucked in the drive shaft well. its a 3in hks high power exhaust. it was already on the car when i got it. i will email you some pics after work.

much appreciated. For reference, I put a 12oz bottle of pureleaf iced tea on its side under my car, it was almost touching the subframe. I think a can of soda laid sideways will actually hit the subframe. Aka I scrape A LOT. Although I love it lol #loweredprobs
When I do my 3s swap the front will most likely get a little lower due to the extra weight over a 7afe. Idk if the rear will be effected at all, prob not tho.

Yes you may want to up the front a little lol. The 3s is much heavier than the little 7a. And if you are running an e153.... I would like to touch quickly on 'boosting your balls off', if you are going from DD a 7a to a 3s... take it slow lol

And as far as the loud straightpipe sound, that only happens when you open the cut out. Only when you want to 'race'. Which is still pretty loud, but its dyno proven to up your power. So when you want to drive around town quite with a dual 2.25 you can, but then you can open it and shove it in the civics face tongue.gif

Its not any more difficult to run the exhaust pipe up and over (with someone who has a pipe bender) But again you run into a little bit of restriction with the more bends and especially sharper bends you have. The turbos gotta breath smile.gif

Lol silly me, I never considered the option of dual 2.25 AND a remote cut out. I will look into that

sorry i never got around to getting those pictures. i was in a rush to get the car fixed last night.

here are some links that might help you see the 3in exhaust over axle

http://www.ferrita.com/en/gallery/toyota/celica-gt4-90/
this is for a st185 but still similar

4-eyed-freek

the car is now a 1/5 lower than this picture with the frame rails 3 1/4in off the ground. also am running 3in pretty much turbo back. no issues at all, i know your car is much lower and that's definitely not my taste but i dont see an issue with 3in all the way back and over axle.

Thanks. Seems like a tight fit. If I can get someone to cheaply fabricate it for me then maybe ill do single 3. But idk im liking the idea of dual 2.25 more and more each day. Maybe I can prove everyone wrong
Malek
I literally have no space between the body and the subframe..but that's because my subframe mount (dom tubing) crosses the path where the exhaust would go

I'm thinking side exit exhaust, with a large resonator of course haha I'd like to see you go through with your dual though!

Finally! One person who wants me to go through with it lol. I definitely will but it wont be til income tax season. Im not getting my 3s til next month anyways (had the money but had to pay some tickets, new fuel pump, and engine mounts..have to pay 2 other tickets by the 23rd)

Til then ill just run a downpipe, maybe try to spit some flames out
