I have been pricing transmissions and transmission rebuild kit and im not entirely sure which kit to buy. I cant find a transmission locally with low mileage or within my budget. Does anyone know where i can buy a rebuild kit?

Would help to know which transmission you're talking about... Let's just assume is the S54 box that comes with 2.2L engine.

A rebuild kit with all the synchros and bearings will probably run you much more than a low mileage transmission - here's one for $666.19. And then you still need tools and know how to put it all together. Not terribly difficult, but it's a pretty advanced job.

Hence why almost nobody does that. Usually, only parts that need replacing are replaced, such as bearings or select worn synchros. Those can be purchased from a dealer. Bearings are $30-80 (depending on which one), and synchros I thing are $80 and up.

I recently rebuilt my gearbox (customized gearing, LSD) and have some spare parts - shift forks, gears, synchros - feel free to PM me if you need anything, and we can work something out.

Yeah the s54 transmission. are the parts the same for the S53 and the S54? that link is for S53. My neighbor knows how to do it and has the tools and he will show me how to do it for free.

Aftermarket had them named a little differently than Toyota. All S5x boxes are same except for gearing ratios and final drive ratios, and which gears are synchroe'd - aftermarket just has them named by "features" such as what's synchroe'd and not rather than what Toyota had it named.

That company, which I just used as an example for you, lists S53 as compatible with 94-99 celica. I did not order from them, so cannot vouch for them - you'd want to contact them and do your own research.

Also, keep in mind that Camry S51 transaxles are pretty much the same as Celica's with slightly longer gears and final drive. Depending on your situation (if your engine is making more than stock power), you may consider putting in a Camry box which should be much easier to find. I did a custom box with gears 1-4 out of Celica S54 and longer 5th gear out of Camry S51 for better highway mileage.

If you're just needing bearings here're a few places:
http://www.transmissionpartsus.com/product/BK419.html
https://cobratransmission.com/s53-bearing-g...f48e2487b2a5e1e
http://www.manualtransmissionpart.com/BK419.html
http://www.makcotransmissionparts.com/BK419.html

If you need the synchros then you're shy of $700 anywhere you get it. Everywhere shows the kit is for a '94-99 Celica but i would contact and confirm first just to cover your ass if for some reason it's not right, even though the S53 was used in the '90-93 Celica GT behind a 5S-FE with the only differences I can find find is the second gear and final gear ratios.

Im pretty new to the car world still. I know a little more than the basics but not much. do you think a transmission for $250 with 100k on it is worth it? My trannt is stuck in third but the shifter moves by hand. any suggestions?

Sounds like your 3/4 shift fork may have broken. If - with engine OFF, or course, or you'll grenade the box completely - you can shift into 1/2 and 5, but 3/4 feels funny, that's more evidence to broken fork. Of course, you'll never know for sure until you take it all apart.

$250 seems like ok-ish price for 100k box. Not great, but not terrible either.

If your old box was in good shape otherwise, and you have a neighbor that's willing to help you with a rebuild, might be worth a try to repair it. If it had other issues and a million miles, forget it and get another box, cause a full rebuild is more money than it's worth.

Make sure a shifter cable hasn't broken before you do anything... The Celicas use a pair of cables to translate the motions of the gear lever into motions that change the gears in the transmission.
