Was just browsing Craigslist and came across this. Thought I should share it with everyone:

Looks pretty clean. If only I didn't already drive a 6gc...

How well does it hide imperfections? I'm also thinking of dipping my car but have a bunch of peeling clear coat and bubble rust (which I would obviously sand down first).

Don't want to get into it if that stuff will affect how well the dip applies

So I'm moving to Philly to start a new job in mid-August, and am trying to decide what to do with the Celica. It's 16 years old, has 130xxx miles on it, and while I've kept it in as best shape as I can (3500 mile oil changes, new fluids whenever needed, a car wash and vacuum once a week), some things are starting to go.

Brought it by a mechanic today who quoted me for the following:
New front rotors and pads (old ones are warped)-- $180
Power steering pump-- $125
Transmission flush-- $150

Not sure if this includes labor or not, but I'm looking at a decent chunk of dough for those repairs. And that's not to mention the new bumps, dents, and peeling clear coat the car has acquired over the last 6 months (when my sister drove it). It's not looking good, but it still cruises on the highway and it's paid off, which is a big factor-- and plus, it's my first car.

So my question to you guys is: what would you do? Would you pay the money to fix it up and hope it lasts a couple more years (would be huge to not have a car payment to worry about in addition to college debt), or would you say sayonara and go trade it in for something more reliable (my commute each day will be roughly 40 miles, so that is a concern)? And are any of those repairs things I can so myself with a mechanic's wrench set and very limited knowledge of cars?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

460 miles driving 60mph fr bay area to san diego

I don't know what's more impressive: that you got 460 miles before a refill or that you stayed at 60 going down the coast on the 5.

Also an update: got 492 before the light came on on my return trip today. This little car never ceases to amaze me in weird ways.

Just wondering what other people have gotten for max miles traveled on a tank of gas. Last summer when I drove across country, I was consistently around 380 miles when the gas light came on in my 95 GT, but yesterday I was surprised to see my tripometer turn over to 452 before the car reminded me I needed to fill up. Pretty impressive.

What have others gotten?

Well, some bad luck. I left my car at home while I was away at college this year, and just came home to find it in much worse shape than when I left. Apparently my sister had been driving it and "bumped into a few things." There are a few dings and such-- nothing too serious (my car's got some cosmetic issues anyways...meaning the front end is a different red than the back after the previous owner got into an accident)-- but what I can't figure out is how there are no so many paint issues: paint peeling, rust bubbles, oxidation and such.

So my question is, does anyone know how to best deal with these issues? Also, what's the best way to deal with sunfading or whatever it's called of the paint?

Any advice would be awesome. Thanks!

Just wondering if anyone on the forum is from Grand Cayman. Walking around Georgetown today I saw a dozen or so 6g Celia's-- a couple of them really nice. Would be interested to know if anyone from the forum drove by me today

I've been thinking of getting some mud flaps for the winter in MA and was scouring the board to find some pics, but all I've found is OEM or the crazy big rally ones. Does anyone have any pics of another kind of mud flaps like the autozone ones or even the ikea mod? Just trying to get a sense of what it'd look like...

Hey, I'm looking for one of those little pop up things on the tops of the rear seats that allows you to fold them down. Shipped to 01730?

Thanks

So one of my buddies just got a 2009 Mazdaspeed 3 and was complaining that it has too much torque steer. Being totally clueless like I am, I have no idea what he is talking about, and when he tried to explain it (by saying that it happens in front wheel drive cars where one wheel gets more power than the other), it made even less sense.

Sooooo what is torque steer? Why don't all front wheel drive cars have it? And if it's the product of unequal distribution of power to the wheels, why doesn't something like Mazda's traction control help? Would a Celica with a swapped in 3sgte have the same issues? Is there any way to modify a car to avoid it?

Sorry for asking such potentially stupid questions. Like I said, I am totally clueless haha

Not sure if this is within the rules or whatever, but I recently went to check out a black 99 Celica GT w/ about 115k that was in very good condition. I decided to pass and instead make the more logical decision and get a truck (instead of a 2nd 6G), but if anyone in the New England area is looking, this one was in the best shape of any I've seen for sale lately. He's asking $3500 obo.

This topic is pretty cool. And those paintball guns are awesome!

I'm a student at a small college in Los Angeles. I play college baseball, tutor English, and work as an announcer for most of the fall and winter sports teams. I also work in the summers for the Cape League. Other than that, though, I don't do much of anything haha

Did you prime the calipers before painting them? I'm planning on trying it this week

I've got 128xxx miles on the Celica, and it's been fairly reliable minus a few suspension things, but now something else is going on and I'm not sure what it is. The last two weeks, probably every third time I turn my car on, right after start up it idles rough around 1800 rpm and the whole car shakes for about 15 seconds before it calms down. Any ideas what might be going on?

I've posted on this before but it turns out the suggested issue wasn't right. So for about the last 4 months my car's back passenger side break has been clicking/knocking whenever I press down to a certain point on the brake pedal. People on the forum suggested it might be loose bolts on my calipers, but I checked them myself and they were fine and then had my mechanic check them as well when I got a tune up last month and he said everything seemed fine. So I'm totally stumped. Could my caliper just be bad?

Another thing I noticed was that even when I'm not braking, if I go really slowly the same clicking/knocking noise appears, and that recently my brake pedal vibrates when I'm braking at high speeds. Could any of this be connected?

I'm trying to get this sorted out before I decide if I should get a newer car or not at the end of the summer so any help would be greatly appreciated

Finished my 4200 mile drive zig zagging across the country. Then I gave my car a much needed wash.
