Hello everyone,

I just started changing my oil and I have a concern about how much oil to put into the engine. This is my 3rd time changing my own oil and everything has gone smoothly so far except for one thing. After I change the oil filter and replace the oil drain plug I fill the engine with 4.1 quarts of fresh oil (as per the manual). This should theoretically be the right amount of oil, but when I check the dipstick level (after cranking the engine until normal operating temp and turning it off for a few minutes to let it settle on level ground) it is hard to see the oil level because the new oil color is so light. I usually missread the actual oil level as being lower than it actually is and end up putting more oil in than it needs. This time I filled it up to the letter "F" above the top line on the dipstick. So far, the car has been running smoothly with no probs...it usually does after a oil change. My question is will that extra bit of oil in the crankcase hurt the engine and will I need to drain some to get it back to the full line on the dipstick or is it fine just the way it is with the oil level being at the actual letter F on the dipstick slightly above the top line? Thanks guys and gals!

Thanks Tara. Actually, the mechanic has been working on our family's car for sometime now. He's always been honest with the work he's preformed so I trust him with the Celica. The only things is that I hope he is replacing stuff that doesn't need replacement, i.e. fuel filter/timing belt only because toyotas are supposed to last a looong time!

Currently, my car is in the shop for a check up. The '97 GT has about 96,000 miles on it and my mechanic has taken a look and suggested the following:

Replace Timing belt (And some other components in this area)
Replace Spark Plugs
Replace Fuel Filter
Replace Belts & Hoses (Look kinda worn)
Replace PCV Valve

Does this sound right? Is there anything he is missing or should not include? Just want to get some opinions before I lay out the cash.

I just purchaced a new set of iridium spark plugs and want to install them myself, but I've found that I'm missing the 5/8 inch spark plug socket. My mechanic quoted me 30-40 bucks to do the job, but I feel that would be a waste of money and I'd feel like an idiot for not doing it myself. Also, I believe that the spark plugs need to be torqued to some specification but I don't really feel like buying two $25 tools just to use once (iridium spark plugs are good for like 100,000 miles). Anyway, any suggestions on what to do? I don't have any friends that have these tools, so thats out of the mix.

BTW-about the oil question; I take it that a synthetic blend would be a good step before using pure synthetic oil during an oil change...or does that not even matter? But I've also heard that converting from organic to synthetic oil on a high mileage engine might cause some trouble with the thinner sythetic oil seaping through the engine seals. Is there any truth to that?

I'm just going to throw this question out there and look stupid, but is it possible to have a NOS kit installed on a burien turboed 5sfe? If so, any predictions as to what kinda HP that would make?

Would you happen to have any pictures of your turbo setup? Also, how does your turbo kit compare to the one burien offers?

Do you have any pics you could post or email to me? I'm very interested as I have a 97 GT. I'm currently trying to figure out how to make a CAI for it, but it looks like I'll have to become very imaginative! BTW- what K&N filter did you use?

Thanks!

I have a '97 Celica GT with a factory stock airbox and rubber tube connecting to the throttle body. Upon closer inspection, I noticed that there is an odd shaped box connected to the underside of the stock intake tube about 5" above the airbox. The intake tube and the strange box seemed to be connected by a very short tube comming off the bottom of the intake tube. Any ideas on what this box is for? And if I were to replace the stock intake with a short ram aftermarket intake, would this pose any complication. Thanks for ya'lls help!
