I used an 80 grit to take off the paint to avoid scratching too deep into the body. I think it made priming easier. And an even higher after I'd finished Bondo-ing then went back to a 320 for cross hatching. IDK the difference but my dad swears that's the technique he used at his shop waaaaaaaay back in the day. But my primer's smoooth lol I'm in like... the same place as you on mine now. My mother has been gracious enough to buy my books for school and I'm going on grants. If I ever find a stupid input shaft I'll be taking the body kit off and re-sanding and blocking the lower parts for a cheapo Maaco job. I like reading someone's who is making progress. |

So is it a good or bad idea to have an original color spray if I've done the prep myself? Cause I have spent most of the last year on just body work while slowly ruining the other parts of the car |

1994 GT. Manual. How do I know the transmission? The transmission place is charging me 400 bucks no matter what so I might as well just get the Celi fixed. I need to know what input shaft I need. They went ahead and bought the bearing kit even though I said I'd do it myself but every shaft they're sent he claims to be 5/8 of an inch short. Is he bs'ing me or can I find this part? I had given up and bought an Altima but I just miss driving the Celica. Please help. -Neil |

I give up. The part can not be found. I'm putting the car in my wharehouse and buying a mustang or something. Maybe someday I'll have the money to deal with this car. |

I'm retracting that. I got to see my input shaft and gears and all the teeth on both parts were completely stripped. They have ordered 2 replacement parts so far but since they didn't take the time to ask me what size the engine was, the wrong parts have been shipped. On the bright side, I think I know what i'm looking for now. Is anyone aware of somewhere I can order a brand new input shaft and 5th gear for a gt? I'll post in buying/selling if I need to look on here. |

Is there anyone here who has a spare manual transmission around? I checked ebay and they look to be about 500 bucks but I think ordering a transmission feels too sketchy. It's pretty hard to find a Celica in the mountains down here and the junker I've been taking parts off isn't in condition to take something like that from. I really want to keep my car because I enjoy working on it, but it feels impossible to get things like this for it. Is ebay my best option? |

I asked a question a while back that was titled 5th gear whistling. I got the answer driving to work one day. My 5th gear completely blew out and it turns out that they have to replace the whole gear shaft and cluster or something like that... I really am not sure what the problem is because the people are being downright shady, but what they're telling me is that they can't find the part. Is there anywhere I can find one of those if I'm trying to avoid the junk yards..? Orrrrr should I go ahead and buy a junk transmission? Or should I buy a beater and try to save the Celica for after college? I will be broke for awhile now and I figure I could just find a really good bike to get me across town for the summer, but I'd really rather just drive. I'd appreciate any ideas/opinions. Thanks... |

I've looked at all kinds of aftermarket seats and I decided that I'd like to just refurbish the stock seats. I have black leather covers but they're torn to hell and i'd like to replace them. Would it be easier to get whole new stock seats, find some OEM leather covers, or have the blocks of the seats that are damaged repaired for $250 each and re-dye the whole thing? I'm a ways away from any new projects with a bum 5th gear bearing that is gonna cost plenty and a paint job... But I'd like to keep up the work on my celi's interior. Any info would help, thank you. |

Diggin the skating story, I got one too. With my girlfriend and every friend I have watching, I tried a nose manual transfer from quarter to half pipe, got run off course on the lead up, when up at an angle, hit the guard rail, didnt switch and came back down goofy instead of making the transfer. Some punk sitting on the pipe thought it'd be funny to stop my board from coming back down with me and I landed flat on my left foot from 10 feet up. It cracked the bone but being the stupid hard@$$ that I am, I decided to man up and live with it. I was then driven home by my pal who used my spare coins to buy cigarettes and less than 2 dollars in gas to get me home in MY car. It took almost a year to get better, I lost half a toe nail and I'm noticeably pigeon toed. I also bounce when I walk like I'm in a perpetually great mood... It sends mixed messages. lol |

That's a good description, yes. I also thought any belt may have changed due to the cold but they all seem fine. My dad says the best thing I can do, since I'm buyin another car this summer, is to just wait til it goes completely and wait til I buy the 1mz and fix the transmission all at once. It took me 5 whole minutes to get it to go into reverse today. It's a bad feeling lol |

Update: I've narrowed this down to the throwout bearing or 5th gear synchronizer. Does that sound right to anyone? I'm just reading a lot of stuff on it. |

I am now convinced that it is an oil problem. My car managed to lose all of its oil in a matter of 3 days so I'm gonna look at all the seals Tuesday when I'm off. I replaced that oil today and it held it fine in between cranks and to and from work, so I'll be checking it in the morning also. But even with new oil it was making the noise, just not nearly as bad. And I know I have not been fiddlin with the gearbox and I hope that the previous owner didn't either. But that was very helpful. If I find out what it is for sure I'll post it as future reference. Thanks |

Ah, looked up the 1mz and that sounds about perfect. I do have a manual. I'm mostly looking for a v6 to do exhaust, intake, minor head work on myself after NADC. Definately don't need a turbo at my age and driving record lol Much appreciated. I'll have my eye on this thread for sure |

Intake manifold problem? are you sure its coming directly from the transmission. transmission and powersteering are generally a more of a whine than a whistle. I assume it's directly from the transmission. I'll be doing 50 in 4th then shift to 5th and the second I get off the clutch it starts. And then I get back on the clutch downshifting and it stops when I'm in 4th. That's what I thought too having had the power steering problem in another car, but it's like me trying to whistle. But a rough whistle. I just don't want to be in 5th doing 65 (top speed) and have a gear decide it doesn't want to participate anymore |
