they both were rebuillt by a company called Performance Techniques in San Bernadino, CA. I have noticed that they have been putting in a brass thrust bearings, and a lot of the rebuild kits i have seen have a steel thrust bearing. As for the cooling of the oil and turbo , i have the stock oil cooler still connected and i have the coolant lines connected to the turbo from the throttle body.

i have a 5sfte, its been on the road for roughly 2 years and in the time span i have blown 2 ct-26 50 trim turbos. i recently dissambled the turbo trying to figure out why i keep blowing these things. On both turbos the thurst bearings were damaged, but had no scoring . so i dont think the turbo's prematue deaths were caused by an oil issue . the thurst bearing looked almost brand new except for were it had worm . Which is in the center section were the bearing connects to another part which connects to the shaft. this picture may explain it better http://www.alltrac.net/images/turbo/rebuild9.jpg . Now i was pushing these turbo at 17 psi . until i was told that 17psi is to high for a stock ct26 exhuast side. im am wondering if it is possible that the increase in back pressure from running it so high, could have damaged the thurst bearings. any input would be appricated. for the record i am not putting on another ct26 based turbo i am upgrading to a t3/t4 but i want to figure out why i keep killing them before i blow another turbo.

yeah a biger tubo is in the work just trying to figure out witch one, it nothing to do with tthe pistons compression is 200 to 210 across the board. talked to a few turbpo shops and appernetly the ct 26 thrust bearing do have a tendency to blow when a bigger compressor wheel is put on .

on your profile, you have an Emanage ultimate listed. (again i state that im not a rocket scientist at this turbo stuff) but, is there any chance that an inproper tune would cause premature failure of a turbo? Ive always heard of poor tunes being attributed to blown motors, and such. But if as u say, everything is flowing and your presure is fine, then i really dont know. Maybe oil restrictor?

i also am wondering if my tune may have had something to do with it i have had a chance to look at my run files from yesterday and i did see detonation during boost not a lot but it was definatly there. i hope it isnt the oil restictor i put that on to protect my turbo from blowing out the oils seals. the turbo it self has no play what so ever up and down it only has back and forth play. i am also wondering if maybe when i was pushing it to 17 psi if that had negative effects which killed the turbo.

turbos dont just "go".. i honestly want to say, there is an oil problem, or a cooling issue

x100000
Something about your setup is blowing the turbos.
How do you know the turbo is shot to begin with?

yesterday i took it out for a run , let it warm up like usual, did everything normal. boosted it a couple times and noticed dirty white smoke coming out of the exhaust. which is the same color smoke it made when the other turbo's thurst bearing went. i then checked for play and it has devolped conciderable play when pushing and pulling towards the exhuast housing , so back and forth play not up and down play. the turbo also has started leaking oil threw the seals. i always let the car spool down for at least five minutes after driving it. i have really good oil pressure, and the line that supplys the oil was clean last time i checked it. also when i blew the last turbo i changed my bov to the new hks bov becuase i wanted to make sure i wasnt having some type of compressor surge issue.

the turbos were being rebuilt from a shop in cali called performance turbos. Orginally i was pushing 17 psi with the turbo but people on this board convinced me that it was a bit to much for it. turned down to 15ish. my motor is built to handle 20- 25 psi but i only want to go as high as 17.

Just toasted my second ct-26 50 trim, in approx 5000 miles. i know im not having oil issues , or any cooling issues. What could be the reason these are failing. Also if i were to switch to another turbo what turbo would you guys suggest. i am looking for something that is going to spool fairly fast but be able to produce 17 psi whitout any problems

so im driving my car today, everythings normal. boosting nicely, very quick. So i stop at the bank and let the car idle for a bit to let the turbo spool down. . shUt the car off, then went to the bank. came out tried to start it just cranked over , tried starting it for about 10 minutes off and on. wouldnt start. pritty much gave up but tried one more time. and bam starts up awsome. go to get some food. it did the same thing. now its getting fuel i can smell it. it has spark but im wondering if my coil is going bad and im getting a weak spark. at start up . Any ideas? btw if it sit for a while it starts up fine.

Okay, a few more issues have arrived. So lately I've been noticing a puff of white smoke coming out of my exhaust when I stomp on it. But when I'm just cruising around there is no smoke visible from the rear view mirrow, but my girl friend tells me she can see smoke. I checked my coolant no signs of oil and checked my oil no signs of milky stuff.

BUT I took the piping off of my turbo compressor and spotted oil all over the piping and a puddle sitting on my compressor. Its not black either, looks to me like fresh oil.

Could some help me diagnose my problems. I will be doing a compression test, but lets just say my compression is good. is the issue my valves?

But to me the obvious thing is my turbo, but wouldn't I be blowing blue smoke?

HELP!!! SOS someone please help me.

my turbo did the same thing...... then about a month later it was out, getting rebuilt. white smoke can be oil buring in the exhuast. check the turbo for play. that what i would check.

just let me know when you want to swing buy. when I rebuilt my engine i dropped my comp. down., alittle for the help with the timing issue ( detonation problem) that the 5s has when boosting at higher levels. i have had my turbo on from day one. i had it turned down to stock boost level and never punshed it the frist 1500 miles. and turned it up slowly.

your ignition coil is on your firewall.

Really?? I thought that I had an internal coil that sat right under the distributor attached by 4 screws... thats how it is labeled in my haynes manual

it can be either way depends if you have a cali , or federal emission car.
