Your grammar makes it a bit difficult to understand your question -- or if you have one. nope, just observations From what I can gather, the temperature guage would fluctuate when changing speed -- I'm going to guess that it was reading a lower temperature at higher speed. The thermostat you had in the car when you saw this fluctuation tested faulty on the stove, opening too early and closing too late. You then replaced the thermostat with a Stant thermostat. Yup, bored with too much time on my hands The rated opening on the Toyota thermostat is 82C, with maximum opening of 8 mm at 95C. You can buy aftermarket thermostats which open at 76C, but I'd rather not. Seeing the temperature in your car drop as you drive faster indicates a thermostat stuck open, or as yours demonstrated, no longer calibrated to open at 82C. yup, sure is. I wouldn't go 76 because its too cold. Engines are more efficient at warmer temps. Since you replaced a faulty thermostat with one which tested good, you should be done. Only caveat I would add is to be sure you installed the new thermostat with a new gasket, and with the jiggle valve correctly aligned. And i'm done. Thanks for the tip on the gasket. (I'm a professional auto tech, but its a good suggestion for noobs). Also this Stant tstat had no jiggle valve. |

So I had been having a sneaking suspicion that my thermostat wasn't up to snuff. My car (95 Toyota Celica ST, 234k) never overheated, but temp fluctuated more than I would like (I don't want any fluctuation from city to interstate). So I researched and found the Stant Superstat ($10, made in America) and bought one for my car. I tested it on the stove. 180°f (82°c) open AND close. Tested good so I replaced it. Old one had no sign of anything funny UNTIL I put it on the stove. With my temp gun I measured opening temp at 170°f (76°c) and closing temp was not until 120°f (49°c)! That means when the car is warm its never getting to a good efficient temp. I have been getting 31mpg and have a 340 mile trip to take in a few hours. I hope to see an improvement in mpg based on the new temp. This particular tstat comes with a lifetime warranty so I can replace it in a few years if I sense funny business. Stant# 45758 |

You are not supposed to change fuel filter on those cars, it is made so that it should work all the car's lifetime. Toyota probably will tell you this if you try to buy a new one from them. If you got a lot of dirt in the fuel tank I might consider it, but if not, I would just keep it as it is. Yeah, you'll definitely realize this when you try to change it. It sucks. |

Flamesuit dream build: 1st gen Rav4 st with 7afe backwards conversion (or 4afe,5age). Stick of course, coilovers for car height... Lets put a turbo on there for good measure. Rugged celica(ish) wagon. Ok, back to real celica talk. |

P.S. I am female, take that as you will! lol 1.Find a man to do it for you. or 2. Its irrelevant Either way, I'd stay away from the tiffany bags ![]() Google helps if you don't know how to identify something or locate something. I suggest doing the routine of AutoRx as I had amazing results from it. But at 154k, your car is basically brand new. How are the plugs?? |

I've gotten into the habit of shifting into neutral while driving to coast and save fuel... BUT if the injectors are cut off, it would be better for me to leave it as the engine won't be "idling". |

Sounds like you have a bare wire somewhere. Try checking from the ac relay as starting point. Disconnect the compressor as a start. Turn it on to see if it blows. If it doesn't you can connect a test light inline and see it if lights. Its got a short if it does. Don't have a test light? Buy one. |

It does matter, system is designed to push the coolant in a certain direction and pull it back the other way. Reversing that flow can make it that much harder to get air out, cause poor heater performance due to low flow, or even (if one side has a restriction) erode the heater core and cause a leak. We're not talking about spinning the water pump backwards... The only difference is the core in/out. AND if you do have a restriction, that should be addressed. Anyway, the answer was given. Good luck getting the car back together. |

on the heater system, which side is the send and which side is the return? What I mean is which side is the engine pumping into the heater core and which side is the return back into the engine? All hoses are disconnected and I have a different engine in the car now so I can't look at where the hose is going. I would guess that the heater control valve would shut off the water pumping in from the engine and the return would be on the other side. Neither the Chiltons nor the Haynes manuals have a cooling flow diagram. Thanks! ^that. Doesn't really matter as long as its all flowing. |

this that many miles, just change everything, to do a teardown and rebuild, will cost you about 500-700 bucks. same as cost of a used engine that you have no idea what condition it is in. do not trust any junkyard that says " oh its low miles and good running" i have had to rebuild countless of "these" engines. Then that^ if you have another ride. Get wet with oil! Its invigorating! This is an especially good motor to learn a timing bel job on. If you FuX it, just take it back apart and FiX it. But yeah, if with 315k, you can make it go to 450k and beyond with proper maintenance. |
