If it's bone stock the BKR6E's are the OEM spec. If you've increased the boost, get the BKR7E's (and gap a little tighter). They're copper plugs, so they don't last too long compared to platinum or iridiums, I would replace mine whenever I changed the oil (~5k miles). On the plus side, they're much cheaper than platinum or iridium plugs!

From the 3S-GTE power primer http://www.mrcontrols.com/primers/power.htm :

To help keep the cylinders cooler under high boost and insure that the stock ignition keeps the spark going strong, you should replace the stock plugs with a set of NGK 6097 copper spark plugs. These are one step colder than the stock plugs to help keep detonation in check. You should gap them at 0.028", which is a little less than stock to make it a little bit easier on the ignition system to keep the spark going strong and reliably even under higher boost pressure. These will need to be replaced every 5K miles or so. Note that you do not need to make any other changes to the stock ignition system until you reach a higher power point. It is a myth that you can make more power with aftermarket ignition components on the 3S-GTE. All that the ignition can do is lose power if it is weak or not properly functioning. The stock ignition and components, except for the spark plugs is adequate to 17-18psi in good working condition.

Note: NGK 6097 == BKR7E

I've hollowed out the downpipe cat on my MR2's Gen2 3S-GTE, and it wasn't too bad. A drill with a long 1" blade bit (that you don't mind mangling a bit) and some long pliers did the job for me in an hour or two. Just be careful, there is a metal mesh between the ceramic cat matrix and the downpipe wall, and it tends to wrap around the drill bit. Drill out the ceramic, then use the pliers to pull out the mesh. Also wear eye protection and a dust mask at least, you do NOT want to be breathing that stuff in.

But if you've got the money, I'd recommend trying to get a aftermarket downpipe. Way easier to deal with.

Bit of a distant second to my MR2 Turbo, but I couldn't ask for more out of a beater!

Surely that can't be right? kindasad.gif

In 1996 the Australian dollar was about $0.78 USD, so it's closer to $35,000 USD. Still seems a bit high, but not quite as shocking.

$60 picked up. I've never used it, came with my 3sge that was said to be under 50k miles... the engine hasnt had any problems whatsoever so I imagine the tranny is in good shape as well.

I'm in the pittsburgh area... seeing if anyone is interested before I get rid of it for scrap.

Yes! I might. Let me check on something, I'll get back to you.

Too bad this wasn't a couple weeks ago, I was in Pittsburgh.

I've got a pretty stock 93T MR2, and she gets 25-26 mpg around town, up to a max of 30-31 if all highway.

My 99 Celica's 5S-FE gets...pretty much the same mileage. 26 day to day, 31 highway. frown.gif

At least that's on regular gas, not premium like my MR2 needs. But I second what was said earlier, you NEED to have a reliable (if slow and boring) car to drive when your swap is under the knife. That's why I got my Celica, because right now the front end of the MR2 is on jack stands while I rebuild the power steering.

Need a driver's side facelift foglight only. Don't need a bracket or anything, when I bought the car the lens was busted and the contacts are all rusty.

Thanks!

EDIT: That was fast, I found what I needed.

Humm, according to ToyoDIY, the master cylinder is the same but the slave is not. It seems to be kind of hit or miss what is compatible and what isn't.

I appreciate the offer, though! Good luck with your part out.

I have a good transmission out of a 1994 ST w/ stage 2 excedy clutch and everything else on the car you would need to do the conversion. I do believe the ST 1.8L motor's have the transmission you are speaking about? I am almost certain. Correct me if I'm wrong? Well my car is being parted out and the trans/clutch/pedals/manual ecu/ everything is still on the car, so if you know that this swap would work for you and your set up, let me know and we can talk about a price!

Sorry, the ST's 7AFE has a C52 transmission. But! I'm not sure if the clutch hydraulic system is the same or not. If it is, I'd be interested in those parts, can anyone chime in on that?

Hey all. I got a nice little bonus, so I'm looking for an S54 and all the related clutch hydraulics for my '99 GT. I also need shifter cables, though I already have a 7G shifter. Bonus points if someone has a manual ECU, but if not I don't need an inspection until September, so a check engine isn't a big deal for now.

List of things I'm looking for:
S54 transmission (preferably under 150k miles, my engine has 130k so I'm not TERRIBLY picky, but it shouldn't need a rebuild)
Driver's side transmission mount
Shifter cables
Clutch master cyl, slave cyl, and related lines
Clutch pedal assembly
Brake pedal
Flywheel (lightweight preferred, used okay as long as it's in good shape. I can get it resurfaced if need be)
New or lightly used OEM-spec clutch and pressure plate
Manual ECU (optional)

I'm in central NY, but I don't mind traveling a bit to pick up the transmission if you're in the northeast. I can find excuses to travel to NYC or Pennsylvania on a weekend. Everything else shouldn't be too much to ship.

If you think I've forgotten anything for this, let me know! I probably have. And if anyone wants my auto transmission after this, you can have it!

I've never had any problems with Mobil 1 5W- or 10W-40 in my MR2's 3S-GTE, but the debate on best oil runs long. I've heard "German" Castrol Syntec is probably one of the best, but it can be hard to find.

All that stuff can be found in the BGB. Engine -> Mechanical, and it's near the end.

While I guess that would be theoretically possible, that much titanium would be prohibitively expensive (we're talking tens of thousands of dollars) and wouldn't actually do anything for strength. Pure titanium is only about as strong as steel, but it's much lighter.

Why would you want to strengthen an automatic transmission? I assume drag racing? Otherwise the E153 is a incredibly strong manual transmission, and it bolts right on.

thank you for the correction... so basically for us laymen, not an option though.. that's one of the reasons i just got a 91 N/A after searching for a "good" MR2, the car is going to be a full project car. And primary differences between the 91 and the later revised 93+ is the rear cross member which changed the rear suspension geometry, and some body stuff (US spec). nothing that i would not address during the project.

The body changes (if you're referring to the taillights and wing) are actually 94+. Most MR2 guys get them from JDM cars, but you're right 93+ has a revised rear crossmember (I have a spare one actually, if you want it), improved synchros in the transmission as well as an optional LSD, and larger brake calipers and rotors. There are some other, slight differences, but they're pretty negligible.

if i recall correctly, 93 was last year sold for the MKII MR2 state side, the 95 j-spec motor is in fact a "gen 4" 3sgte. but there is alot of confusion on that since the "gen" designation between the US-spec 3SGTE's and the J-spec 3SGTE's actually do not line up as per the same year. IIRC the last revision of the 3SGTE was in 98.. unfortunatly for the OP none of this works due to cali regs.

Actually they did sell MR2's in the US during 1994 and 1995, but they are exceedingly rare.

http://www.mr2ownersclub.com/mr2sc/website...gistrations.htm
If those numbers are correct, they brought less than 300 MR2's over in 1995 and they're all N/A and have the same 5S-FE, and even in 1994 they only sold 250 Turbo's. Good luck getting anyone to part with one, though!

I believe you have a non-LSD. Little hard to tell from that angle but this is a TRD LSD:

Note the smaller internal hole.

However $450 including axles isn't a bad price. Complete axles alone are worth $150-200 for the set. Bonus points if it's a 93+ tranny as it has upgraded synchros.

Omg savanna rx7... Or FC's are pure sex. I'd love to get the kid to part with it, but he'd need like for grand for it, because that's hat e got it for with 80k miles on it

It's a FB, it's either an 83 or 84, I need to confirm with my grandpa. He was actually just calling about it the other day. I'm really excited for it, it has been garage kept forever, and my aunt said she wouldn't be surprised if it had less than 30k miles on it. Engine is probably carbon locked as hell but if I can get it running (MMO/ATF for the win) that's 90% of the battle right there.

You said that kid with the MR2 doesn't know anything about cars, right? Just tell him that POS ain't worth a nickel, and he's getting a deal if you only give him $1,500. laugh.gif
Man I overpaid enough for my 93T already, and I got it with 80k miles as well (108k now). Worth every penny, but my wallet actually bleeds when I open it.

I think so, was that on the jayville turn around? When simons tranny mount broke off, and end up holding it up with a ratchet strap?

Honestly thats good information I dont know how I missed that. The numbers look much better for 2nd/3rd. 3100 is steep, but i've seen gearsets in the 15k+ range, which i'd obviously never buy.

Haha yep. I'm surprised they even managed to finish, but hey, do what you gotta do to finish the stage, right?

I remember some MR2 guys talking about custom gearsets for the E153 (which appears to be internally partially compatible with the E154F), and I think quotes for a custom gearset were around $6k minimum, probably more in the end.

I also found that PPG makes a dog engagement, rally gearset for the GT4 but it's $11k.
Ratios: 3.000 / 1.933 / 1.350 / 1.000 / 0.786
So it's actually between the OEM and Kaatz gearing, but costs 4 times as much. kindasad.gif

Anyone know which tranny they used or ever even seen one? I can tell you it's clearly not an E154F wrc out of the st205. The gear ratios are freaking horrible for a rally car.

I've looked for potential solutions that arent competely insane as far as budget goes for better gear ratios, but it seems pretty much like a lost cause.

Have you looked into someone making a custom gearset for your E154F? I know it's been done with a fair number of other gearboxes, TRD even offered some for other cars but I don't think any were for the GT4. It'd be a bit expensive, especially if it's a one-off job, but it would probably be less money and a lot less labor than trying to adapt a different transmission.

By the way, I believe we met at Black River Stages. I was helping Simon with the rally taxi, but I was talking to you about the Celica since there aren't many of them rallying about anymore.

EDIT: Ouch, well I see Kaaz makes a gearset, but from them it's $3,100: http://www.kaazusa.com/products_gearset.html
Maybe you could find one used?

Man I hate the new orange NY plates. I was real happy I lucked out and got blue/white plates for the MR2 about a week before they went orange. At some point I'll probably change to custom plates just because. I love naming conventions (I'm an engineer lol), maybe JOZH-204 or something to match the MR2.

I've also got an early 80's RX-7 my grandfather is gifting me. It's down in Virginia right now and hasn't been driven in probably 15+ years, so it will need a bit of work. That one will obviously be JOZH-RX7 smile.gif

Check the MR2OC forums too, there are always people getting rid of CT-26's on there. We just don't want 'em on our 2's, heh. I plan on getting rid of mine, but probably not before summer.

Welcome fellow NYer!

Glad to see you're not the kid I thought you were that keeps coming into my shop with his white 93 MR2 Turbo that doesn't know anything about cars... I saw the white MR2 and was a bit worried, but your front grill is white.

There are a few of us up here in NY... Josh (JDcelica) and I are trying to meet up with some locals (in fact, I'm trying to meet with him lmao stupid work schedules). Good to see another person from NY with a CLEAN 6GC. Most around here are battered and broken.

Ha yeah I'm going to try to keep her looking decent. The MR2 currently needs a new bumper (guardrail mad.gif ) and some serious exterior love (previous owner went for a Maaco special paint job, flaking off in spots), but I should be able to safely say I know a bit about cars at this point. Maybe you can convince that kid to part with his? It does look real nice sitting next to the Celica, now I just need a white MkIV Supra to round out the collection, lol!

the conversion is more than you think. its not a weekend job.

Well considering I can do a tranny swap/clutch job on the MR2 in a weekend, I don't foresee too many problems so long as I have to foresight to get alllll the parts I need or might need. Especially considering how much heavier that stupid E153 is, that was a real pain in the butt job.

And like richee3 said, any real issues come up and I can tool around in the MR2 for a while.
