it could be a clogged PCV. you did put a used engine in so you have no idea what the history on it is. I have a freshly build 7A-FE for sale in about a week. where in CA are you? im in Los Angeles area. if you are local and interested in this engine, let me know i can even install it for you alot cheaper than anyone else

Yeah the PCV was taken off so it's not that. He might take the exhaust pipe off to see if it's just old oil burning off.
Smaay, thanks for offering. I'm not far from LA, I'm in Riverside. How much are you selling it for? I wouldn't need help installing it, but buying that engine would definitely solve my problem. lol. I'm new to this forum so I don't know how to private message you, so message me if you want.
Thanks.

So I posted on here several months ago and received some pretty good advice, but now I'm having different problems.
I have a '94 Celica ST automatic, with a rebuilt '94 Corolla 1.6 engine in it. Well some parts are from the Corolla, some are from the Celica. We finally put it all together and now it runs, but I'm having the SAME problem I had with the old engine - grayish smoke coming out of the tail pipe. I know oil is burning and I probably should have changed the rings and pistons, but could it be caused from anything else? Or is it a coincidence that both engines are giving me the same problem? The old engine broke down on the freeway - a piston shot through it creating 2 large holes. So I got a different engine from Pick A Part. I know it probably won't pass smog at this point, but I'm just wondering if anyone has any advice on what I can do to minimize the amount of smoke coming out, etc. Someone mentioned checking the spark plugs for oil then gapping them, and doing a transmission flush, and using synthetic oil or some kind of additive, Marvel Mystery Oil, etc. Give me your thoughts on this, I will try everything possible before spending money on rings and pistons. I appreciate all comments. Thanks!

I'm trying to install these custom gauges I bought (white and blue reverse glow gauge), for a '94 Celica ST, but I'm having some trouble with it. When I lay them over the originals and put it back together and back in, the speedometer needle gets stuck at about 50-60 mph, and is delayed going back down. Not sure if it's the needle now or just the gauges. Should I glue or tape them down to make them flatter? If anyone knows about installing these please help me out. Thanks.

Thanks for the advice. The smoke is gray, and there is a lot of it everytime I accelerate. People are saying it's oil. If that's the case all I have to do is use that Marvel oil you mentioned? Because they are trying to get me to rebuild the engine, and I really don't want to do that.
Thanks again.

Hi, I have a '94 Celica ST automatic, with about 170,000 miles. The check engine light is on and it's code 71. I already cleaned out the EGR, but the check engine light came back on after I reset it. So I got another EGR used from Pick a Part, and the light is back on again. Could it just be it needs a new sensor?
Also, smoke comes out of the tail pipe when I give it gas, and it smells really bad. Is it unrelated to the check engine light being on? I've considered having the engine rebuilt, but I want to make sure before I spend that much money. It has good compression. I bought valve seals but the person who was going to do them said it would be best to just rebuild the engine. And the person I bought the car from said he recently rebuilt the engine. So I just don't know..
I'd appreciate any ideas on these problems. Thank you!
