i plan to have someone else do the swap for me. the way i see it is i could probably do it myself but then if something goes wrong and the engine gets messed up i'm out more money tryin to fix what i messed up. if someone else does it and messes up the engine THEY'RE out the money fixing their mess up.

thats the first lesson you need to learn. if something breaks, its coming out of your pocket, regardless of who is doing the work. i dont know anyone that will swap in a used jdm motor for you and then pay to replace it when they find out you bought a blown motor or something.

do your own swap. there are alwasy bugs to work out and things to keep an eye on. if you do your own work, youll know how to deal with that stuff, and youll save a lot of money.

really? i just don't know if i trust myself to do the swap. i mean i know a little bit about cars but i don't think i know enough to do an engine swap by myself. are there any books that would help during the process if i did decide to do it myself?

ok so i'm planning on doing a 3sgte swap in about a year. right now i'm doing all kinds of research on it reading threads, stickies, looking for places that sell clips. but here's the problem it's getting overwhelming. i've been reading threads and stickies all weekend and the more i read the less sure of myself i get. so what i would like to ask is that yall who have more experience or have done this swap please if you could recommend what threads i should start off with. i think first off i should read what i would need as far as parts go (in generic parts). um...yeah and stuff of that nature. basically i am yours to mold i just want to know what to read and in what order. any help you have would be great. i can't continue to just go from the last thread and read all the 3sgte threads all the abbreviations are hard to keep up with and the formulas and cr@p. thanks in advance.

your title is incorrect.
is should be "factory water to air INTERCOOLERS"
the st-205 (94+JDM celica GT-4) came with the W2A intercooler, as well as the 165(4th gen celica) although the intercooler was VERY small on the 165.

thanks so it would be between the st-205 and the st-185rc? also apparently the st-205 came in the 94+JDM Celica GT-4 but what did the st-185rc come in? in everyone's opinion what's the better of the two engines? is there a post that compares the two or would i just have to research each individually and then decide?

ok so i've been doing my homework for a 3sgte swap (planning on doing in about a year) and anyway i was wondering what engines came factory with a water cooled intake like the st185rc. are there others out there? i want to start researching these setups so i can decide which clip to buy when the time comes.

that's true. but all i'm going to say is the government is probably compensating for, and i mean no disrespect by this, people like yourself not wanting to do it so they have to pay some good money to convince people to do it. don't get me wrong if i was 100% going to do it i wouldn't be asking yall's opinion i just dunno. another thing is i don't know that i want to do it because if i go over there for a year and make $100k it would be hard to come back here and get another job makeing WAY less while i go to school. i just think it may be too good of an oprotunity to pass up.

ok just to clarify. it's on a military base and you don't leave basically you sit there out of harms way and collect a paycheck. every three months you get 10 days off and an extra $1k dollars for a plane ticket to wherever you want to go. and yes most people don't get a full $100k but with the job that i'd be doing i'd "work overtime" which would equate to between $100k and $130k. i just don't know it's a good opprotunity and i'm not worried about the danger i mean this is what i've been trained for. the only problem i have is leaving my wife for a year. then again i would be able to see her every 3 months and i have the option to leave whenever i want to. hm...it would create a good base as far as my retirement goes not to mention what i could do to my car with a fraction of that money. i dunno what do yall think?

ok so i'm sure alot of you have heard that the government is pulling out alot of non essential troops and sending in government contractors. they're paying about $100k non taxable for a year. now if you had the option to do this would you take it? if so are you married, single, prior service?

Mkay. It basically comes down to this:

The cheapest and ONLY option for now is LIVE WITH IT.

Save your money, and do a 3SGTE swap or 5SGTE swap.

Granted, a 5SGTE is new territory. You're going to have to have the entire inside of the engine redone with completely custom parts. This kind of conversion could easily run into the 10-15 thousand dollar range.

A 3SGTE swap done properly will run 4-7 thousand from what I've heard.

There is very little that can be done to a 5SFE to substantially improve its performance, short of turboing it. It is at heart, an economy engine and always will be such.

Bottom line, save your money and go turbo.

For more info, read the performance oriented stickies.

thanks that's all i wanted to know

the biggest thing everyone here is forgetting, or seems to forget, is to get a 5sgte to run, its basicly a 3sgte swap, and in actuality, to use the extra displacment of the 5s bottom end, you really want to be running a full standalone engine management system.
its DEFINETLY not a "budget" setup by ANY means...unless you have all the 3sgte parts, custom pistons, and someone to machine the 3s rods for free for you...

and all that means? i'm new to this whole mechanic thing so basically what you said looks like how charlie brown's teacher talks. so you're saying you recommend a 5sfte?

ease of drivability and fuel economy? it sounds so bad when you say it like that...when you say fuel economy is lost what are we talking about?

sounds like a 5sgte is what you want then, the FE head has a nice torque line on the 5sfe and is tuned for lower range operation (shines below 5500rpm). the GE head rules the upper rpm band (above 4500) and from what i understand will flow more than the FE head, but you may not get as much off the line prespool power and may not spool as low as with the F head. but if you're running the right turbo, it wont matter.

now would this setup give me any better performance before i turbo charge it or are there at least some performance parts i can put on it until i save up enough for the turbo kit.

dont waste time messing with your celica.

3SG-TE is the way to go!

sounds AWSOME can i have the $5k for the swap? cause i don't have it but i can scrap together a few bucks to swap the heads and start to build a good engine that i can turbo later. also it would be more fun to drive for the time being.

actually i don't know my goals are to have a car that MAYBE in the mid to high 12's and at least the low 13's when all is said and done yet maintain at least semi acceptable mpg for gas. not a straight racing car just something that's pretty quick and fun to drive. i don't know what power band what would be best for this application. also i guess the boost would be determined by how much i would have to run to reach these goals.

what you did it wasn't the best thing but I can understand why she got mad, what I don't understand is why she got soooo mad.
I think if you delete your account and add the regular formula ( roses, I'm sorry, silly face and nice dinner) you should be ok

probably the best solution good call
