With it sitting outside without a hood could be moisture in the distributor cap. Could it still spark via a plug touched to the engine block, if that's the issue, though? I've had a hood set over it for about a month now, with no real changes. If you think it's a possibility I'll definitely look into it, just wasn't sure if it could still spark but be bad. Is there any way I could be reading 155psi but still have something damaged from overheating? I guess I can't think of anything here. |

Hello. I have a 1996 Celica ST (7A-FE). It's a bit of a mess at the moment. It had been in a front-end accident. I tore the hood off, and drove it home. It ran fine, but defnitely overheated (radiator was cracked). Not sure 'how' bad, but it got up there. Seemed to run fine after, too. I moved it to the backyard, and let it sit without a hood for about two months (I was just done with the project at that point, given up). Now when I try to start it, if I haven't touched it in about a week it'll start fine. If I shut it off after about half a minute, it'll start on maybe 2-3 cylinders. It then gets down to barely running on one. However, if I rev it up high (~4k-5k), it'll run just fine (all 4 cylinders will start to fire normal). I tested compression, and it seems to be getting between 155-165 for all cylinders. Seems to have spark on all 4 plugs. Fuel pump is working, I can hear it and while I don't have a way to test fuel pressure I pulled the hose off the rail and it is definitely flowing. Any suggestions from here? I'd love to have not cooked the engine, but if it is what it is, well then... F*** it. Thanks for any suggestions you can provide. If it sounds more like the engine is toast, what in the engine would cause this? I actually have a spare head lying around, if that'd be likely. Could the compression test come back as that without being good, still? |

A long time back, I removed all of the dust shields from the front end of the Celica (5-speed, 7AFE ST), while rebuilding the engine and restoring the engine bay. I let it sit like that a bit longer than expected, and now I can't remember where each one goes, where all the fasteners go, and what they fasten with. Anyone have a handy diagram or even some pictures of the shields in place and what they fasten with? Thanks! |

I had no clue until I was touring the junkyards looking for speaker plastics for my 5G (stock speakers are in the dash, upgraded speaker package has them in the doors). The upgraded package came with door mounted speakers and, lo and behold, some of those metal door hole fillers. I got to wondering if they had those for this Gen too, and yep! Wish we could even get a factory part #. |

As the title states, I'm looking to buy the metal door panel fillers that are included in some Celicas. I could make them if I can't find them, but I much prefer the 'lazy man's'/OEM method. Included is a picture of what they look like: http://imgur.com/a/JL6WF I am located near Buffalo, NY, if that helps for shipping purposes. |

The main issue I'm curious about is sensors (crankshaft sensor, for example) and EGR-related stuff. I noted that both of these were snags on my way through replacing my 1996 7AFE with a 1995 7AFE I had rebuilt. |

As the title states, I'm looking for engine replacement options. I imported a 1996 Toyota Celica with a blown engine. The engine is DEFINITELY blown, there was no oil when I got it and it's locked right up. What are my options for swaps? I want to stick stock, and swap as easily as possible. I'd prefer just a 'pull the whole thing, drop in the whole thing' 1:1 swap if possible -- I know when I swapped my 1996 ST engine with a 1995 ST engine it was the absolute worst project - so damn many different things. I have a 1992 Celica GT that also has the 5S-FE in it; body's pretty rotten so it has to go soon anyhow, but good engine. Would that swap over okay, or would emissions make it a huge pain in the balls? I was also wondering if a Toyota Camry's engine would be a good option for a swap. Anyone done this yet, that might have some insight? Thanks! |

So I said **** it and pulled the brake booster out of my second Celica to test. The brakes now work fine. If anyone stumbles across this in the future, it was the brake booster, for me. |

Anyone else have opinions? I can absolutely try that, I have a spare master cylinder. But just curious if the 'noise through the intake' is normal. |

Well, I'm in the crossroads of a huge project. I just tore down my Celica, and completely 'restored' the engine bay -- rebuilt the engine down to the crankshaft, rebuilt the transmission, cleaned everything up and out real nice. I have everything 'pretty much' together, the last issue is I can't keep brake pressure. If I pump em a few times, they get hard, but it feels like the brakes are not bled right and they soften up again. I gravity bled half a huge bottle of brake fluid through them, and bled them the traditional way on top of that. When I press the brakes, if I press them hard I can hear a 'hiss/whoosh' in the air intake. Does that mean the booster diaphragm/piston o-rings have gone bad? And if so, does anyone have removal instructions? I reaaaaally do not want to have to tear more apart than I have to. Thanks! One last question: Does the clutch have any sort of 'booster' or is it the same? If I take the clutch and stomp it to the floor as far as I can (reasonably, not putting it straight through the metal or anything) I can hear a bit of a 'hiss' too, is why I ask. Before I did all of this my clutch was 'failing' (it was pretty well worn), but I'm almost wondering if maybe it was that and not the clutch just yet. This is a picture of the car, if you want to see. It's a 1996 Toyota Celica ST 5-speed. I know it's not 'worth' what I'm doing to it, especially without an engine swap, but there's no rust, and I have sentimental attachment to the car. I have cleaned everything up, undercoated/rustproofed around the bay and undercarriage, replaced almost all suspension parts, replaced the front core support (drilled out all old tack welds, swapped new in), put in a whole new back quarter panel, and so on. It will be painted soon, just gotta get the mechanical issues out of the way. This was my first engine rebuild and 2nd transmission job, and aside from the milling/machining (I had the compression upped to 10:1 and hot tanked, and the valve seats vacuum tested) I did all the work myself. Not 'worth it' value-wise, but in knowledge it was to me. http://imgur.com/a/96T9S |

sounds like something inside the trans is not hooked up right. Ahh, okay. I was worried it was something else, like my car getting a bit older and more mature, and now it doesn't really want to back that ass up anymore or something like the young cars do. Glad we cleared that up |

I have a freshly rebuilt Celica ST,torn down to the engine bay, crankshaft, and synchros. It ran fine when parked to tear down, mostly (engine was just old and tired). However, I rebuilt the engine (that part turned out perfect) and tore the transmission apart completely to manually clean, inspect, and paint it as well. It now no longer goes into reverse. Every other gear seems fine, I can drive it normally if I want, reverse aside. I can shift it into the slot where reverse should be, and I feel it click from the detents, but nothing as far as go. I can put it in the position for reverse while the engine is running, without the clutch. Anyone have any suggestions for what I may have done wrong, please? Thanks for any advice you can offer! |
