Hey All, I've recently been having a problem with the siren randomly going off on my '97 ST202, and thought I would share my ongoing findings for anybody who has similar issues (and have a couple of questions at the end I'm hoping somebody can answer..). The car is pretty much stock, although a previous owner has clearly played around with electrics a little and had a sub in the back. Alarm is the standard Tvss iiib. The issue started with the alarm siren going off at random whilst it was parked out front one eve. I'd had a previous problem with alarms going off before due to low battery, and assumed it might be the same again. It stopped and I forgot about it, until it happened again whilst driving. Alarm was going off when driving, but immobiliser wasn't kicking in; just the siren. The only way to get it to stop once started was to disconnect the battery for a while (got some pretty annoyed looks; that siren is loud!). After looking around on forums I couldn't find much concrete to go on, so I started taking panels apart until I found the alarm box behind the radio. I removed the alarm and tested; but after an hour, siren started going off again. The siren itself is down below the battery bay, and has a green front grille on it. A bit fiddly to get to, but managed to unscrew the two bolts holding on and disconnect. After taking the siren apart, it was blackened inside and had clearly failed. The alarm also contains a few backup batteries, which I've seen people say can fail/ leak over time.. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I imagine most 6th gen siren's are getting to an age where failures become common now, so expect others may suffer from this same issue. Which brings me to the question; I can see a couple of old sirens I could order on ebay, but expect they're all coming to end of reliable life so would rather replace with something more recent. Does anybody know if there are compatible sires that could be installed easily enough as a straight swap? |

Would also be interested to hear the results of your research! As I posted recently, I'm looking for a way to get my Celica under the ULEZ emissions threshold. And fully electric would obviously achieve that... @slavie I could probably personally live with a range of 100miles if that was achievable. I'm sure that would be a feat to accomplish still though. |

I would look at the AR or AZ engines out of the Scion TC. More torque than the ZZ out of the 7g celica. Either way, you are in unorthodox swap territory. It may be cheaper just to get another cheap daily, until you can figure out your situation with the Celica. Thanks, that does look like the sort of thing I would be after - except apparently the Scion TC never made it to the UK! (Was wondering why I hadn't heard of it..). It looks like the same engines are potentially used in Corolla's and RAV4's though, which we do get over here, so will take a look into those.. Yeah I mean I have a year before the zone expands so have a bit of time to look into this before the Celica becomes un-usable for me. I'm really just trying to get an idea for how feasbile an engine swap would be and start to put a cost against it. |

Perhaps an obvious choice would be to grab the engine from a gen 7 celica, which I think just about meets the targets, but may depend on the specific model and engine.. There is a checker that will tell you if any given car will pass https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/check-your-vehicle-35896 |

Well, any car sold in the UK from 2006 onwards meets the Euro 4 standard, so would pass. Which means theres a pretty big selection.. I guess I would be looking at things around the 2.0 litre mark as a starting point to match the current engine. But other than that don't know how to start whittling them down! |

Hey All, So I don't know how many of you potentially live in the UK or if this is common knowledge, but they have introduced the 'Ultra Low Emission Zone' (ULEZ) which is effectively a tariff whenever you drive into central London in a more polluting vehicle. The criteria for vehicles which don't have to pay this charge is: Minimum emission standards Petrol: Euro 4 Diesel: Euro 6 The ULEZ is enforced based on the declared emissions of the vehicle rather than the age. However: Petrol cars that meet the ULEZ standards are generally those first registered with the DVLA after 2005, although cars that meet the standards have been available since 2001 Diesel cars that meet the standards are generally those first registered with the DVLA after September 2015 This means that unfortunately my gen 6 Celica has to pay £12 every day that I want to drive into central London. This hasn't been too bad until now, as I live on the outskirts, however they are going to be expanding this zone massively early next year and it is going to effectively make it impossible for me to keep using my Celica as my daily drive. Which brings me onto the question; is there any relatively simple engine swap I could undertake which would allow me to meet at least those minimum emissions standards, and allow me to keep running my Celica? The key considerations would be: 1. It must at least meet Euro 4 emissions standards (ideally above and beyond this, as I can imagine they will continue to push the standards higher down the line) 2. It must be relatively straightforwards (as far as engine swaps go - I realise any engine swap is a fairly major undertaking) 3. Ideally the donor engine would be comparable in power and feel to the current 3SGE in the car now 4. Ideally the donor engine would be readily available; a car which is common enough to find second hand in the UK Any advice would be much appreciated. If a suitable engine exists, you can expect to see a set of photo / video updates as I undertake the engine swap.. Thanks in advance, A |

Hey All, Made this topic because I was being dense and couldn't figure out the forum but have since worked it out.. So instead I'll just say Hi! Started a topic about an engine swap so hopefully I'll talk to some of you on there. Thanks, A |

Hi All, Been reading through the various bits and pieces about speakers on the forums, but still not sure on best way forwards. I've got a '97 GT with the standard 4 speaker setup. Front two speakers blown (the previous owner clearly had a sub and presumably large amp and managed to blow both). I'm looking for the simplest replacement options, with the least messing around. I have found a pair of OEM that I could order, but seems a shame to waste the opportunity to upgrade a little. However can anybody recommend the most hassle free new pair I could install? Not looking for amazing quality sound or volume, priority is a simple install (i.e. shallow speaker depth so need to drill out bits of door, and nothing too powerful requiring a new amp..). Also, understand I would need an adapter piece (6-5" - 8" to fit the space), and a couple of adapters for the wires. Are these adapters standard on all Toyotas from the same era? I can't seem to find anything specifically mentioning the gen 6 Celica. Any advice much appreciated! |

Hi All, Background info: I bought a 97 Celica last year, bit of a doer-upper project. Came with 1 key with standard fob, fob has never worked. (I tried sticking a new battery in the it a while back but didn't work and never got around to looking into it further). Anyhow step forwards to now, battery died a couple of weeks back. Replaced battery and car started up fine, great.. but went to start up again a couple of days later and no joy. Plenty of power still in battery, so I'm guessing this is an immobiliser issue of some kind? So, questions are: - I'm assuming the model I'm driving does in fact HAVE an immobiliser. Is that correct?? - I've read stuff about the fobs and stock immobiliser, but honestly dont really understand it. Any knowledge on how its meant to work etc. would be appreciated. - Is there a reset button or sequence of some kind I should have followed, or should follow now, to stop the immobiliser killing the car. - Is there some way of testing the fob and getting it reconnected to the car. I'd rate my knowledge of car electronics at about 1/10 so the more info anyone can give, the better. Thanks! A |

Hi cheela - Also just replaced my Gen 6 wheels with some off of a Gen 7. I don't know what to do about the space saver in the boot though, did you get a new space saver to match the new wheels?? Thanks, A |
