Any foreign things in the combustion chamber i.e. coolant, oil, etc. can and will cause detonation.
I hate to be an ass, but coolant can not, and will not cause detonation.
It will actually prevent it, just like water injection.
smile.gif FYI===Glycol antifreeze (typical antifreeze) will ash overtime when ignited and will cause ignition problems...... the last thing you want with any engine.... let alone a turbo'd one. One cylinder running cooler (diffently) than the others...... hmmmm .... not good. As for the water injection, water does not have any detergents or additives, therefore it causes not harm when used correctly under the right conditions. Furthermore, water injection is almost always mixed with methanol in any good setup because it mixes with water very well, it is cumbustable, will not freeze, and prevents the water corrosion of water injection and fuel system components. smile.gif

QUOTE
Think of it this way... If you really do have a small coolant leak from the head gasket, and it does get worse when you boost the motor, whats the worst thats going happen? Your situation wont be any worse.
On the other hand, you might do all this work, and still hear the noise from your heater core.

Stef you definitly need to fix the problem before boosting mad.gif . Any foreign things in the combustion chamber i.e. coolant, oil, etc. can and will cause detonation. frown.gif Boosting the 7afe is very delicate and almost has to have perfect chamber conditions in order to last. The added pressure to the head from boosting (if it is the head gasket) will almost be guaranteed to get worse or fail. Trust me I know. wink.gif

QUOTE
But when there is a small leak, the over-the-counter stop a leak stuff at autozone or kragen works.

Im not burning you Hanyo and i agree this stuff does typically work, but it is a bandaid and it does eventually cause other cooling problems. Not a goos solution for a motor with so much investment.

QUOTE
I didn't think that the top surface of the block might have to be machined as well, that could be a problem. I was hoping it would be as quick and easy as just swapping the heads.

The block even if it has overheated more than likely will not have to be machined, these blocks are very resitive to warping and i have built several turbo 7afe from junk yard motors and they have never needed machining. The head on the other hand almost always does if it has over heated any bit. But be careful you will need to keep your c/r as low as possible for that turbo.

QUOTE
The theories:
- The head is cracked or warped from the slight overheating. Theory being that if there was no coolant for the temp gauge to read so it was inaccurate and it actually overheated more than we thought.
- One or two of the headbolts that we reused were actually not reusable and did not stretch like they should have causing the headgasket seal to not be consistent.

The celica thermostadt from my experience is VERY inaccurate. I have ran an extra thermo for a little over a year now and found a BIG diffenrence in the read out of factory and the aftermarket. I would suggest and oil press and aftermarket thermo before turboing just to have that extra security. wink.gif

smile.gif Its is not worth the chance of having to do another head job or engine failure to reuse old head bolts. smile.gif

how much extra boost will forged rods allow? What will they do exactly?

Forged rods are mich lighter allowing a quicker reving motor. Also forged rods will easily hold about any HP or rev that you could possibly push out of this engine or any of the hybrids, i.e. 7afe, 7agte, 7agze, etc.

That's great to see you working on this, but I can pretty much guarantee you that you won't be able to find 25 people to buy in on rods. I couldn't even get 10 people to buy in on lightweight flywheels!

Good luck though! smile.gif I will keep this in mind when people ask me about forged parts for the 7A.

-Doc

If its flywheels for the 7afe, add me to your list! biggrin.gif Im hoping people will jump in on it but Im with you, I dont really see 25 people dishing it out.

I just got off the phone with Belfab Racing about the Toyota 1.8 Rods he has avaliable. They sd that they are not for the 7afe but he has already talked to someone about making them. They are ready to put the rod into production as they have all the design work ready to go for this engine. All he sd he is waiting on is 25 people to commit to the buy and he will make them all for 320.00 per set. Additionally he sd he is going to make a batch of another 25 sets with these to keep in stock.

You can see them here: http://www.belfabracing.com/

This company makes rods for top of the line companies in mass quantities. They simply just wanted to start making some in their own name for the extra business. We need the 7a'rs to join in and commit so we can now have a decent rod at a decent price!

What are some trans options for the 7afe block that will hold modest hp and tq, and of course lsd?

That is a good piggy back with a 7agte i had to change my whole map not just mod it like you can do with the emange and that unit and a stand alone are close in price

Does it matter which head is used? Big port, small port, sc block, ect?

No............ there are 3 4ag heads small and big port and the 20v head

So your saying I need a U-Emanage only? Do I still use the 7afe harness and ecu with this or the 4age ecu and engine harness. I believe I have everything figured out except what harness and ecu to use.

Hey I was needing your guys help. I am planning on a 7agte build and already have bottom end built. 7afe block bored to 82mm, crower custom rods, polished balanced crank, arais 8.6:1 4age dish pistons. biggrin.gif My question is that i found a 4age 16v donor car and the main harness has been cut but the engine harness and ecu is still intact. Will I need the main harness, ecu, and engine harness for my guages and everything to work, or do i just need the ecu and engine harness. I have an 95 celica st. Any help or ideas? frown.gif

Can someone tell me if i can use a 4age 82mm hks head gasket on stock 7afe block and head (81mm) to lower comp?????

Out of curiosity what would lowering the compression on a stock 7afe do for performance wise?

I have a turbo 7afe but interested in lower cr, just wandering if you could put 82mm gasket on 81mm bore without problems
