the VW set-up is designed with fuel economy in mind, not performance, twin charge + performance = fail, the supercharger will be taking more power than it can produce at higher RPMs thus, stealing for the turbo. Twincharge will have a great powerline tho. but if top end power is what you're after you should get rid of the supercharger.

This is an awesome project, I was thinking about a 4agte using a 4agze bottom and blue head and a GT28RS turbo, I even have a E58 tranny sitting around.

Good luck with everything,

the vw twincharged was not designed with just economy in mind , yes it can get 40 miles a gallon , but 170 hp and more in tq. is very high for a low boost 1.4 liter. the instantanious and continuous torque that keeps building in this setup is the winning factor , as described here:

http://www.automobilesreview.com/reviews/vw-jetta-gli/37/

i did about 80% of the designing and work on this particular engine and setup in this thread , and people in australia (before the vw market twincharge) have done this with upwards of 300 whp , with just a gt25. the main deciding factor on this build was the want for a 300+whp car with outstanding pull throgh out the rev range.

by boosting through the s/c ( like most twincharged gze's)theres also a lot more switches , controls , etc. to work out in the design also (not to mention the ginormous amounts of compressor presuure differences with s/c after throttle and turbo before throttle). with the s/c boosting through the turbo (s/c>turbo>intercooler), its a strait forward process , with no restrictions as far as the sc12 being able to turn the volume of air the turbo will be producing(like in turbo>s/c>intercooler).

yes super chargers can "multiply" boost , but a small 920 cfm per revolution sc12 isnt the s/c for the job. but however pushing its factory boost thru the turbo( 10 lbs) till the turbo spools (and then well after while the turbo is spooling , kind like feeding the turbo 10 lbs. of boost) ,it puts no limitations or restrictions in the system. the s/c and turbo both are free to spool whenever. one or the other at different rpms , or both in high rpms.

i know i can get tweak to do the harness , i know that the 3s will fit into the engine bay , just wondering how some of you celica guys go about doin it to the st's that were never meant for the s series. tweak quoted me $8000 for a turnkey swap , but thats a bit much . ill will probably go with the gze , considering the 20v's were never offered here in the states and sourcing replacement parts would be a headache. i have also seen the hks twin charge system for the gze's , says can put down around 350 ft-lb. torque when tuned properly.

jdg 371 says: "for the corollato have 3sgte , mount modification , and cut and weld will be neccasary."

is this true for the celica st's as well?

I've been told each sticker adds 5hp wink.gif

hahahahaha

and every square inch of carbon fiber adds 2 hp. laugh.gif biggrin.gif rolleyes.gif

A roll cage should ONLY be used when the occupant(s) are wearing a HELMET
otherwise in the event of a crash you can be SEVERLY hurt/killed....and any decent shop will tell you that

Quote:
4-point harnesses, 5-point harnesses, racing harnesses, or other non-stock type seatbelts are made to hold a driver in place during extreme driving situations as exist on the race track or autocross course, so that he doesn't have to use his strength to keep himself from sliding around, and can instead concentrate on driving.

They are also made to keep the driver safe in the event of an accident in a vehicle that is equipped with a rollcage. The driver's torso is kept mostly in one place by the harnesses (they do stretch a little bit normally and during an accident). This attempts to keep the drivers (helmet-clad) head from banging too hard against the "not-going-to-deflect-much-when-hit-by-a-head" rollcage. It also performs a number of other safety duties as well.

As far as safety is concerned, rollcages are made mostly for one thing, and that is, keeping the person inside the vehicle from being crushed. In racing vehicles, they stiffen up the chassis, improving handling, yadda, yadda.. that's not the point of this.. We're talking about safety here. When a vehicle gets in an accident, the rollcage (which is usually bolted or welded to the floor of the vehicle in some manner, will do its best to absorb some of the energy and prevent the foreign object (another race car, tire wall, whatever) from entering the vehicle and harming the person inside. It sometimes does a good job of this, but it doesn't offer as much safety as you would think. However, when a vehicle rolls, rollcages (if properly designed and installed) SHOULD prevent the vehicle's roof and other parts from collapsing in and crushing the occupant(s). This is where 5-point harnesses step in, and prevent the person from flying around and hitting random parts of the vehicle as the vehicle goes from shiny-side-up, to shiny-side-down, to shiny-side-sideways, to other random configurations of the "shiny side" (otherwise known as the "top" of the vehicle).

Street cars are a whole other story. When street cars get in accidents, there is not a rollcage to protect the occupants from being crushed inside. This is where the stock seatbelts shine. Since there is no hard metal rollcage to contact (usually a few inches from the drivers head), the passenger can move a little bit more inside the cabin. In event of a rollover, stock seatbelts allow the passenger(s) to slide sideways and "lower their profile" so that the collapsing roof doesn't squish them. If a person were to have 5-point harnesses (or their equivalent) in the vehicle, the harness would hold their torso up so that only their head could move (and in a very limited manner). When the roof comes collapsing down, the occupant(s) torsos are held stiffly upright, and the roof causes either a broken neck, crushed vertebrae, snapped nerves, broken back, paralyzation, or any other range of rather nasty things we don't want to happen to us. As for rollcages, even HEAVILY padded rollcages are much more dangerous to occupants that aren't wearing helmets (aka on the street) than anything in the vehicle normally. It is strongly recommended that you not have a rollcage installed in a street vehicle unless you plan on driving around with a helmet all day long.

So in short, don't put 5-point harnesses or a rollcage in anything other than a race car, unless you intend on wearing a helmet all over the place, having a full rollcage installed with harnesses properly mounted to the cage, and a seat that is properly mounted as well. Anything less and you're asking for trouble.

this is quote i pulled off of a corolla site , where we were having the same discussion.

sup guys , im new to the forum , however i dont have a celica , but a 94 corolla . from what i understand , the 94 celica st shared motors with its cousin the corolla in the same year , 4afe right? i think so .

anyway , seems every one in the corolla community is spinnin there wheels tryin to figure out how to do the infamous 3sgte swap into the corolla. i seen some celica's that bared the 1.6 sporting this swap . i know its not a bolt in replacement , nor a plug and play engine . also in this months turbo and high performance magazine , theres an editor telling a kid the this will be a strait bolt in swap. ???? somebody shed some light for me . is it or isnt it? i know that i will need the 3sgte out of an mr2 , cause the alltrac tranny is useless here in the states , considering the only thing alltrac was the 91 corolla wagon and it bears a complete different transfer case and tranny. i know i can also use the e153 double syncrinizer 5-speed out of the rare v-6 camry. what about the motor mounts ? you guys know of anywhere or anyone that might make a mount relocation or altering kit? also did the power steering , a/c , and cooling system suffice with the st's exhisting 1.6 setup? such as a/c working w/o freezing up , power steering hoses and pressures fitting the rack and pinion? and also the radiator being an efficient cooling for the 3sgte?

last thing , any body on here have a st with a 4agze swap ? you guys would be amazed at how many parts the corolla and celica share on the chassis 94 and earlier.

thanks in advanced for your help. wink.gif
