Please dont take me as ignorant, I am trying to make a legit question out of this... Im not looking to shave times off my quater mile. My last car was an integra which I built up for auto cross. I used this kit http://www.honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=563116 to remove my power steering. Yes in parking lots it was harder to turn, at speed however the steering felt better in my opinion. This is a very common mod in the honda scene with good reliable results. I have already lifted the carpeting, and removed the sound deadening. The usual I dont carry a spare tire around town, no subs, no abs, light weight 15" rims, clutch/flywheel, intake and exhaust. My Air Conditioning is comming out, as it is damaged and would be expensive to repair. So I was thinking at the same time I could remove the power steering, That would be removing 2 pumps, and all the additional parts for each. There is a significant weight savings there. Is there something different about the toyota steering rack that would make this not a reliable setup? |

Its only driven about 50-60 miles a week, Im looking to make it a little more fun without spending alot of money, I ran my acura like that for a year without problems, and as far as I know it was driven for about a year after that without problems untill it was totalled. But if it is terrible without the power steering I probably wont do it. This is one of those things I wish I could try to see if I liked it without spending money since it is reversable. QUOTE(Mynzeyes @ Jul 24, 2006 - 9:02 AM) removing the power steering from a car that is designed for it is horrible for it, and idiotic. the gears and teeth are not meant to be under the stress, and it will wear out a LOT quicker. and then you get to change that. that'd be fun. ![]() How is it idiotic? Has anyone ever switched a manual steering rack from a corolla or other car into a celica? |

Im getting ready to do alittle work on my car, and I was thinking of removing the power steering. For weight reduction, and free power. Has anyone ran the celicas without power steering? If you have how do you like it? How did you do it, my integra I took the pump out and essentially looped the 2 lines with a T in them with a reservior on it to allow for the preasure to be reduced. Any advice? thx |

Do you plan on rienforcing the car after removing the b pillar? if not I hope you dont plan on driving it on the road. That is really sacrificing the integrity of the car in a roll over or side impact. The car will crumble like a piece of paper supported only by the a and c pillars |

I drive my 1990 jeep wrangler. But as stated above a well planned swap should be no more than a weekend of downtime. We did a 7afe swap wednesday took about 6 hours with 2 of us. nothing really hard about what we did but that would leave you easily a day and a half for wiring and loose ends |

Can you name a price? we are looking at about 500 from our local junk yard with ~50,000 miles on it. Seems like a pretty good price to me, he only paid 250 for the car so he is not willing to spend much on it. |

My friend bought a 94 st with a blown engine, we are trying to track down a new engine for him for cheep, will an obd2 engine be the same since we are only changing the long block?? Im pretty sure any 7afe should be a direct swap since we are not changing tranny or any performance upgrades. |

QUOTE(nik @ Dec 29, 2005 - 3:52 PM) QUOTE(Kwanza26 @ Dec 29, 2005 - 4:32 PM) It's very hard to build a 200whp n/a toyota engine. Even modded Beams 3SGE's only make around 180whp without some aftermarket cams... Cams can hurt streetability. 2ZZGE's have reached 200whp... but it's not practical power cause the engine is small and usually located above 8000 rpms. A 20V will have a hard time seeing 200whp without being opened up for higher comp pistons and cams... not even mentioning the mandatory standalone ecu. this is where i like honda motors in N/A apps. like k series motor "Not looking for 200hp" Im honestly shooting more for like 150-160whp that should be a great improvement over the 115 Im running now(if I even have that with the horrible compression #s I have) I agree hondas are the king of the N/A motor. They are so easy to extract power from, however I do not like alot of the other characteristics of the hondas I have driven. Hense why I sold my integra and came back with my second celica ![]() |

If I am understanding what you are saying happened, I had the same thing happen a couple years ago on my last celica, a couple weeks after replacing the axels, I snapped one off about an inch from the end inside the tranny leaving a piece of axel inside the tranny. It was very difficult to remove we ended up pulling out the other axel and hitting it out from the other side, although this was hard because between the 2 axels there are metal rods that make an "x" not leaving alot of room around it. When I get home I will try to find the piece that broke off and take a pic, I saved it because it was such a pain to fix such a stupid thing. |

QUOTE(akiyama @ Dec 26, 2005 - 12:50 AM) 7afe has an economical head design compaired to the 4age head which is for racing. I used to drive an ae 92 with a small port 4age and in my opinion its better than the 7afe. however why not put a turbo on your 7afe and turn it to a 7afte? now I drive a ae112 with a 7afte and I love the response and power of the car I guess its better than the 4age small port. with my goals for the car a turbo setup would be not worth it. Im not looking to get 200 hp, Im looking to make my celica more fun to drive. I honestly much prefer NA power over turbo power, I built a 300zx twin turbo for a friend it is just over 300 hp and alot of fun to drive, however my last car had my favorite power delivery of any car Ive driven...b18c mild head work, type r camshafts, intake, exaust, flywheel/clutch it was only 195hp at the wheels but the engine was a joy to drive and a blast to rev right up in 3rd and 4th gear. Im hoping for a similar reward with my celica |

I will deffinatly hit him up if I have any questions, Im pretty much shopping around figuring out what I want so I can design a package I think my target would be around 150-160 whp with a light weight flywheel/strong clutch, should be a fun setup, Im not looking to set any records just to have something alittle different and to have a fun car to drive. |

Im more interested in the high end of the 4a however I am nervous about going to a 1.6L and loosing the low end, if it will be comparable from 2500-4000 then an improvement from 4000-redline I think that I would deffinatly be happy with the 4a. If I could afford the black top I wouldnt even hesitate. I think if I put a quality exaust / intake package on the car along with the engine and possibly some form of tuneable ecu I would be more than pleased with the engine. |

below 2000 isnt much of a problem dont spend much time there, as long as its close in the middle range rpms and then better in the high end I will be very pleased. I just dont want to loose power in any part of the useable rpm range the 7a is bad enough ; ) |

yeah, but Im looking at the daily driving aspect of the 2 engines. The 7a is just underpowered in all aspects. Im interested in compairing the 2 so I can see where the transition will be from "laging" to "pulling ahead" Im also looking at the transmission options so the powerband of the 4a is important |
