i've heard never to apply belt dressing just because it only makes it worse.

btw i've had the same problem. i've decided it's my alternator bearings (that nobody has tried to meniton before) because it's making a nice metallic whine noise around or a little above idle. i notice mine on shifts (when rpms drop) but when i get to cruising speed (60mph) i don't notice it because of road/wind noise.

i have 231k miles on mine with the orginal engine and clutch, the alternator has been replaced before. but it may need to get another one.

what would be a good aftermarket higher amp alternator? send me a message if you don't want to post here. thanks!

i have a 94 st with the 1.8 and my check engine light is on because of a EGR failure. i've replaced the EGR valve but that didn't help my situation any. do you all have any idea of what to replace/check next?? Thanks

i had this same problem, and i thought it was the power steering.
so i raised the hood and tried to find what and where the noise was coming from. turns out it was the alternator bearings/brushes whining. i moved the throttle and the whining increased with the rpm's. (kinda like a supercharger lol)

let me know if this helps...

now i had a whining noise coming from that side of my engine bay, one day i popped the hood (while the engine was running) to listen more closely to where it was coming from. i thought it was coming from the powersteering also but turns out it was the alternator whining, so it might be the bearings in my alternator going bad. and you may have the same problem.
while the engine is runing reach over to the trottle cable and rev the engine a little, the whining from the alternator should increase.

let me know if this helps...
