The Chrome on my projectors chrome ring thing have come off, any way to fix it???
It just disappeared when i touched it.... (doing the LHD convertion) Thought about 1/16 model build kit car's chrome paint.... but dont want to ruin anything... Last option will be just paint it black... will that work/be cool? (anyone done it?) Pic: http://s753.beta.photobucket.com/user/tto0...?sort=3&o=0 |

![]() I believe there was a member who just fixed something similar to like these. I think it was diegohiga, and IIRC he just used a chrome rattlecan paint. -------------------- -Protection mode, For when your amp tries to blow its load. 1995 Toyota Celica GTS - Daily Driver 1999 Chevy Cavalier - Winter Beater 1994 Honda Civic CX Hatchback - Dead My Celica! |

yes i did but the the orinal one is more shiny and you can see your reflection as a mirror. you wont achieve the same results with a rattle can.
even body shops dont have chrome paint. I really have no idea how toyota and other companies get that shiny chrome looking. this is mine.. not bad and is the closet paint to chrome. ![]() -------------------- ![]() |

I really have no idea how toyota and other companies get that shiny chrome looking. Its a special super-thin plastic sheet that is heated up and vacuum formed onto the projector shroud. Why dont you try sanding the chrome/metallic paint lightly with 2000-2500 grit sandpaper and then buffing and finally polishing. A brand new coat of paint on your car isnt super glossy either, its dull till you buff it.

Chrome on the projectors and other stuff like them is done by electro-plating I believe.

Chrome on the projectors and other stuff like them is done by electro-plating I believe. When the material is metal that's the case. On plastic it's some kind of vacuum forming. Plastic can be chrome plated, but it takes lots of steps and there'd be evidence of the base metals on the projectors. The Krylon metallic chrome should work well. -------------------- 2001 Miata LS 5-speed

QUOTE Chrome on the projectors and other stuff like them is done by electro-plating I believe. Close - it's actually done by vaporised metal in a vacuum chamber being deposited onto the electrically charged piece. Box, you're right, there's several steps, see here for the process...... http://www.vmclimited.co.uk/metalising.php -------------------- Has your car ever been on T.V? but this got me thinking...
What if i paint them black? Isnt the light spreaded by the projector lens? and ill just mask up the park light bit, and just keep that chrome since that bit is intact. and if it is crap, just paint it with chrome paint after. But that involves ruining 1 side of perfectly good reflector... (will ofc not try here first.... ![]() This post has been edited by tto010: Jan 24, 2013 - 3:48 PM |

You can paint the projectors. I've seen it done several times. The only one that immediately comes to mind is Culpable04.

the chrome vinyl only works on flat surfaces ![]() well technically you add some heat and it'll be as pliable as you want it to be... but I meant just the leading portion of the shroud where his chrome is coming off (pretty falt- would need trimming) I would say paint.. i like the look painted JDM's -------------------- ![]() 6gcHeroes:808hectortimmybatmandiegotigamak |

Like I said if you paint it (specifically rattlecan chrome paint) you should try buffing the paint then polishing, you can turn anything into a mirror surface. It may or may not work with various types of paint but it should work on some.
