Hey Everyone,

So basically a few years ago i first picked up a guitar and fell in love with music, over the years i have started developing my skills and writing my own album for the hell of it, awhile ago i started posting the songs online just to see what people would see and i started to get a bit of positive feedback about taking this further so this is where i need help from you guys.

Three of my songs have been uploaded to a site called Triple J Unearthed, for those non-Australians the site allows anybody to upload their bands music which then can enter the charts/ get discovered/ chance of radio play and I'm hoping that some people might listen to the songs and want to join in as a band member.

( I should note that my songs are in the metalcore/hardcore genre if that's not your thing)

All I'm really asking is that some of you simply listen to the songs or even rate and share them so i can get higher into the charts etc

Nice to know there are other people that play music on here. Not my style per se, but was good and seemed to fit the genre well. There were only two niggles that I could think to mention. First what are you using for your drums? They sound cheesy, particularly the cymbals and snares. I can help in that regard and point you towards better things to use that'll match your budget. The second thing, how are you recording it? Is it recorded all at once, or is it being multi-tracked? There were times it sounded grainy and overloaded, only reason I ask. That aside you're doing well. I was going to rate, but that requires registering.

smkr3w is right the guitars are recorded live in multitrack and i add everything else via midi ( which could explain the drums, I've gone through 4-5 drum synths so far ) And as to the graininess it may be a combo of the websites uploading lower quality versions of the song and just general in-experience when it comes to mixing music, i have recorded everything via interface/ Amp Simulators.

I knew about the drums/bass being MIDI. So they're just General MIDI then? The best thing would be to record everything on its own track, that way you can adjust the volume, EQ, and add compression etc... independently. I'll post some free recording software that I've used to great effect:

Would record straight out from them into your PC. Those even have bass built in as well. The Alesis unit is a good bit cheaper though, with used prices being even less on either. Have heard good things about the Alesis, and Roland is always a safe bet. I had a Roland Fantom X and the drums in it were quite realistic. If the above options are too expensive I can find alternatives for you as well. I've been involved with this kind of stuff for awhile and can point you in the right direction. I'm a synthesist so I'm used to doing everything by myself.

My brother actually has an electric drum kit we could try record off but I'm just waiting for his double kick skills to be fast enough haha

At this stage i think the best option for me would be to find some band members and get into a studio where we can record the drums/ bass properly for at least one song and see what sort of quality changes we can get, but at the same time do i want to dedicate this time to perfecting a bands first recordings when live performance is vital early on... The rise of internet bands has really changed how to go about things.

DUDE I feel it! Really well done! Although I can hear what Box is talking about, I think that it sounds very nice put together. I'm really digging it as instrumental stuff! What is your goal, like what kind of band would you want to see form out of this? What kind of voice are you looking for?

Have you ever heard of/listened to Animals As Leaders? You should check them out, they do instrumental stuff similar to what you made, just more in depth since, you know, they're a band xP But really I like it alot.

Well, of course using real drums and real bass would go a long ways towards a more professional sound. The only way to really recreate those instruments through electronic means would take equipment that cost more than our cars did. Here's a thought though. Whatever you're using for a kick sounds fairly decent, so prerecord the kick and have your brother play the rest on his kit. Then once he gets the double kick down he can play it all. Since you play guitar you might look into picking up an inexpensive, but nice bass to play on recordings. So in theory you have the ability to do everything you want to do between yourself and your brother. Can find a bassist later for when you want to play out at shows and such. At least can go with the aforementioned until you can find other people that you mesh with musically. Trying to find people that share a musical vision and get along with each other is a lot harder than you'd think. I can't tell you how many groups I've been in and out of, most of those involving friends as well. Also, recording time in a studio costs an arm and a leg. That's money better spent on gear at this point and time. You can get a very professional recording done at home these days if you know what you're doing. In fact I can't remember who it was, but one of the more famous bands actually recorded an album while on a tour bus and released it. If you weren't on another continent I'd help you in person, but I'll do what I can here.

Yea I've been thinking about going out and buying/ recording my own live bass but its always been low on my money priorities haha, Its an interesting idea of play along with the drums and use a midi double kick i agree it would work quite well so ill have to start testing it soon and see what i can do, The recording of an album is interesting also as there is a band i know who recorded their whole first album and got signed to a label before even playing 1 show so it could be interesting how this all turns out, Vocals are still my top priority at this stage as they are the make or break at least for me and how i feel about the songs.

You can buy a great bass for under $200. I bought my Peavey Fury U.S.A. made P-bass clone for a tad over $100. Just thought about it, but the electronic drum set should have a MIDI IN/OUT on it. Would need a USB/MIDI converter, but could trigger the kit with MIDI data from the PC and then record directly from the kit. Still program the kick and have your brother play the rest for added realism though. Vocals, ehhh... Run to the music & drama department of your closest school. Back years ago I tried to find a singer, but it was impossible for me so I gave up. Focused on instrumental music ever since. If you have any kind of music stores or such in your area ask if you can post a wanted ad.

Yea I'm definitely going to have to pull my finger out of my a$$ and go get one haha

In better news the song [i] has now gone up to number 20 on the metal charts so i can now say a song i wrote with no vocals is on a music chart
