There is a man who has owned his 1990 Supra since 1990 selling his car on CL http://sacramento.craigslist.org/cto/5168210870.html
So because of this opportunity to own a car such as this, I would like to ask anyone who had prior ownership experience some basic questions: Would you buy again? What did you like/dislike about it? Has the head gasket issue worried you? -------------------- Brand new 6gc owner! (sort of 2011)

I owned an '88 and an '89 Supra a few years ago. Outside of the notorious head gasket they were nice cars. At the time we didn't have RockAuto so certain parts were expensive and hard to find, now you can find anything but certain parts like the Exedy clutch for the turbo car is a little over $300 but there are cheaper options. Another thing is find one that has the stock intake(which that one has), the acis system was designed for a reason and it works better than any cheap aftermarket intake. I liked everything about it as once the head gasket was sorted properly you're good to go. It's more of a grand touring car, but there are plenty of aftermarket suspension options out there and it's not like the handling capability is bad from the factory. I've been considering buying another one for years and if the right one were to show up I'd buy it.
That being said there are a few things that worry me about that particular car. The biggest thing being that the heat doesn't work, that's an indication that the head gasket is blown. I noticed he didn't make mention of the head gasket ever being replaced, so that would further lead me to believe that's the case. The interior and paint flaws also are concerning, to be an one owner vehicle it doesn't look like it. It seems like it's fairly hard to find one in decent condition these days, especially around where I live.

also, the heat issue may be something simple as a broken pin. or clogged system. a headgasket? why? if the water circulates, it should give heat, unless
remember there are the lines to go to the small heater core, activated by a valve, either the core is clogged or valve. but that supra looks beautiful -------------------- Learned a lot in 10 years... I was going to say perhaps a clogged heater core, but for a supposed one owner it should've been better taken care of.

The heater core really isn't the issue, even if that's the cause. The paint and interior being in poor shape is. The car is notorious for blown head gaskets and it's showing a symptom of it, and it's not mentioned the gasket has been done. If it were cheaper it'd be worth the chance, but at that price and mileage everything should be good to go outside of minor imperfections.

Then all the MKIV nut swingers will just tell you to get a MKIV and to not waste your time with the crappy pig MKIII. ![]() Lolz square stfu. Supramania is 95% mkiii owners, and Supraforums is about 75% MKIV and 25% MKIII. Supramania is great for overall MKIII info however the crowd that is on there now doesn't have ANYWHERE close to the amount of knowledge that was there 5-7 years ago(Hmm, sort of like another forum I know?). MKIII Supras are great project and weekend cars only. Period. I have had four of these cars and I daily drove one for about a year but was forced to sell it because it was a damn money pit(The others I sold because they were hardtop or too beat). This current car is a metallic blue clean title 1991 Turbo 5 speed and has a fully rebuilt engine, new turbo, <100k trans, and about every option you could have on a 1991 and I still have issues with it. That being said I bought the car for a grand and have probably $2 or 3k into it as of now. These cars are too old to rely on for a daily basis. Don't expect to buy one and have a reliable fast car for a cheap price, it wont happen. The problem with 95% of MKIIIs is the owner, not the car. Also make sure to ALWAYS have one of these on the stand so when(no if) the 7m blows you can still drive the car ![]() ![]() This post has been edited by SupraKid: Aug 18, 2015 - 6:14 PM |

Bite me.
One of the forums I didn't like, it's just been forever since I've bothered with any of them but the last one I was on it seemed like any time a question about the MKIII was involved you had people jumping in saying how you should just get a MKIV... ![]() -------------------- 2001 Miata LS 5-speed

Because old cars suck and power is fun. Modernize all the things! Blacktop BEAMS from an Altezza would be a good match to the first gen Celica, redo the suspension, brakes, and wheels then enhance the structural rigidity. Mmm... But no, unless it's like a pre-war car I have no interest in it being original regardless of where it came from. -------------------- 2001 Miata LS 5-speed

Should've thought about that before doing the BEAMS.
![]() At the time of buying it I was under the disillusion that health would improve, if not for that I'd have never bought it. -------------------- 2001 Miata LS 5-speed

One of these days I will finish my MKIII and drive it,. Unfortunately I love my Celica's so much that I never work on the Supra it just sits next to the shop waiting it's turn.
I'd planned on working on it after the V6 swap is done in the 95 I'm working on, but now that I'm picking up an ST165 also that I want ready for winter, it's getting pushed back once again. Poor Supra... Of course the real hold up is waiting for the right deal on a 1jz/2jz instead of putting one of the 7m's I've got sitting around back in it,. Thinking of using one of the 7mgte's in my 87 pickup though. |
