Figured I'd share my continuing wheel Corolla wheel bearing story with you guys. A month ago I put my FOURTH wheel bearing (put an OEM bearing and hub in). This one has my father and I scratching our heads... We've checked bad grounds already. We're going to replace the bearing for the fifth time and put a ground from the battery to the starter bolt... It's funny, my dad's been a tech for 32 years and he's never seen a car eat bearings like this...

Joe, what does the ground have to do with wheel bearings?

Also, if you are going through them so frequently, are you looking for other problems in an attempt to correct? A few off the top of my head are bad CV, wheel out of balance, deformed knuckle?

A bad ground could let current flow through the bearing and cause pitting.

I've thought about putting it into a ditch. Haha! Not really. It's in VERY good shape for 190,000 miles.

We replaced the bad ground the third time we've done it. The second bearing we changed we figured we got a bad one during the second swap. Once the third bearing went bad, we replaced the hub and bearing with good aftermarkets. We also replaced the bad ground from the body to the trans (it was literally chewed on by a mouse).

That one went bad and we figured that the hub and bearing were the issue, but far fetched. We then replaced them with a Toyota bearing and hub, and it just went bad the other day, like overnight. CV is good. The wheel is true and balanced. The knuckle being warped is unlikely, but not out of the question.

I'm going to swap the bearing out again with an OEM and put a ground from the starter to the battery. Like Daniel said, it happens... The way it got loud overnight made me think that is in fact electrical... When cranking, the arc is going across the ball bearings...

Just get a knee assembly from a junk yard. If you're still blowing through bearings then I dunno wtf to tell you. Maybe take the bad one apart to do a necropsy.

I questioned Chris about where he got his big pack of microfiber towels from. He said he gets his at Sams Club. I go to Costco and I looked there and bought a big 36 pack of them, they are amazing. So... If anyone needs microfibers and they have a Costco membership (or Sams), get them there. c:
