i plan to install keyring light assembly. i know usdm one is just plug&play. my question is, if i get jdm one(ordering from japan) which has the same part number(81870-20040), would i get the same product? i'm a bit concerned that connector and such might be slightly different.

Even if it is not it is just two wires, you can simply cut and use some generic plugs. My car didn't even have the ring in the first place, but the power is still there at a plug on the back side of the fuses.

i bought a used one from one of our members here and it came with a harness and metal ground wire as shown in the pic below. the bulb housing is connected to a black box and semi translucent cylindrical part that are attached to the harness. i have read about 'joining two wires' to install the keyring light, but mine is not just two wires. i also heard that the keyring assembly can be plug&play for usdm. i'm wondering where the female connector is located for the harness. maybe in the door panel?

USDMs look like this and the plug/harness should just be tucked back if you follow the key cylinder
mine was ziptied behind the key cylinder

looks like you got one that also has the harness for lighted footwell but the lights were cut.
here's some info on it.

should be able to wire some LEDS to them and hook it up to your door ajar lights and should still be almost plug and play.

thanks for your response. my harness has a different shape from that of usdm. the one with lighted footwell you mentioned has no harness at all in the pic. maybe mine is jdm?
the black box and the other part(it reads 'fuser') are just for footwells? well i guess i just have to try installing it anyway. rolleyes.gif

i just cut the wires, getting rid of black box, fuser and ground wire(yeah, now it's just two wires). since there was not enough room under key cylinder to reach the female connector(literally i couldn't put my hand into the space), i decided to run the wires to side marker. it works wink.gif , but the light was not evenly distributed. maybe i have to change the bulb to red led and use special film. i'll update once i finish the job.

i changed the bulb to leds. just one bulb was not good enough and there was no way to distribute the light evenly. diffusion film needs about 3/4" for even distribution, so it was not good for this job. i used flexible bar type leds instead. for even distribution, i made a ring and hung it on the key cylinder. the leds should be rolled up toward the inside for better brightness(see the pic below)and be given some space(like quarter inch) around the key cylinder(if there is no space between leds and cylinder, the light would be dimmer). result was not bad, but it took me some time to locate the ring leds to optimum position. usdm keyring light assembly could be plug & play but i warn you that it would not be good enough due to poor light distribution. my effort paid off with some struggling. smile.gif
