 engine codes, diagnosing a 94gt |

I have a 94 gt, and every few days, the check engine light comes on, I think the car is obd1 but, I'm not to sure. Is there anyway to read codes from the engine without paying the roughly 80 bucks for a one time mechanic diagnostic?
