EDIT: Wrong screen name. This is YellowTwo's post.

Since the day I bought my car almost a year ago, it has never worked right. Since day one, it has ran rich and still continues to run rich. When I first bought it, it would not even go over 4k RPMs. I finally fixed that after a few months, and am slowly putting everything back to stock as it should be, but then new problems just keep popping up. Right now it has a huge boost leak which I still haven't found, a missing bolt head on the exhaust manifold causing an exhaust leak, it's running rich, and has just an overall messy engine bay with missing screws, bolts, brackets, etc.; and today I found out: a dead battery.

I can positively say that almost every single problem I've had with it is because of the previous owner having no idea what he was doing with the car. I could go on about him but I won't. I just want to give up because, lately, it has done nothing but piss me off. There have been a couple times where it ran to my satisfaction, but those are rare.

I'm just wondering what other people think I should do. I really don't want to sell it, after all the time and money I've spent on it... but is it worth it? I would appreciate any advice.

That exhaust leak is more than likely your boost leak.

Take it to a shop. I'm sure there are a lot of shops down in socal that work almost exclusively with Toyotas. If you were nearer, I'd take it on.

turbo cars need more love and care. make a list of things that need fixing and bust out the craftsman one weekend.

...it wouldnt be the first MR2 sold from this board this month.

just remember especially with an old car, maintanence is never done... if you are dumping a ton of money into it, you will forever be dumping a ton of money into it.

I kinda think and hope you are right. The thing is, when I step on the gas so that it's almost boosting or is boosting, then I hear a loud gushing sound of air. It has progressively gotten worse since the sound started, and when I tightened the other 3 bolts on the flange where the missing bolt head is, the exhaust leak sound is much better, but the gushing air sounds the same.

If you have a BOV on it take it off and put the stock BPV on. Get a shop to extract the broken exhaust manifold stud and put a new one in. Find and fix your boost leak. Sounds like very minimal problems to me. Mr2's are freakin awesome!!!

I tried putting the stock BPV on but all it did was make my car die a few seconds after starting it.

I know a shop that can extract the broken bolt, I just have to call them when I have time.

Easier said than done. frown.gif I did, however, find out that the intake hose is really cracked on the end where it meets the turbo. Pic:

I dont see how that would be a boost leak though because it's before the turbo. I'd think a boost leak would be somewhere between the compressor and the throttle body... Edit: Please note that that picture is without the coupler that connects it with the turbo.

And yes, MR2's are awesome.... when they run.

Stock BPV is the best... did you have the recirculation hose back on? Start it back up a couple times and let the ecu "relearn" if it keeps dying. Maybe that will help.

That cracked intake house isnt causing boost leak...its causing dirty air to get into your turbo and engine.

Mr2's are great cars...probably one of the lesser reliable toyota's but they are still MUCH MUCH more reliable than any other domestic performance car. I have only 91k miles on my turbo mr2...the only things replaced is the timing belt/ water pump and valve cover gasket...everything else is original and it runs and drives like a brand new toyota still.
