Been having a debate at work about the benifits or stupidty of changing my spark plug + wire + adding
a ignition control system into my car. Here is the debate: Stock 99 celica Only mods are custom pipe and CAI plantium +2 plugs Would changing the wires + ignition control help improve performance or since i dont have a supercharger or turbo would it be a waste of money since the stock spark might be enough for the compression it makes? Personally i would think the bigger the spark the better... but i dont know much about cars and would thank you for any information. |

Spend the money on an exhaust first.

custom pipe = exhaust then?
Got it. Ignition control may be able to make a little more power, but dont look for anything too drastic. -------------------- Scott

either go back to stock or at the least ditch those crappy bosch platinun plugs. NGK and Denso plugs work well. ive seen ALOT of people have ALOT of problems with the bosch platinum plugs, myself included. i grabbed a set o the 1's because my old plugs were worn out and the plats were dirt cheap. i put them in and it ran OK at 1st. but then about a month later it started to misfire under hard acceleration and then even moderate acceleration. i ditched the plugs for some stock ones and i havent had that problem since.
what i beleive happens is that the resistor material in the plugs 'burns out' resulting in way too much resistance which weakens the spark to the point where it cant properly lite off the air/fuel charge when it would be the most difficult (which is when theres alot of fuel/air and its under more pressure). ALSO as stock as your engine is your stock wires are the BEST you can use. If you're gonna do ignition control (i assume timing advance/retard control) then you might as well (for another couple hundred dollars) get something that can control fuel AND timing. a device like the greddy emanage goes for about $400-$500 and has the capability to control fuel curves and timing. a good NA tune with that device and complimenting mods such as in intake and a good header/exhaust *could* net 10-20whp out of a stock block. Thanks for the information but i have 2 last question to ask....
Dont laugh.... How do u know if you had a misfire in your ignition? Also i have bosh wires was this a mistake to put in? |

If you have alot of misfire, trust me, you'll know. But if its not that bad then you can simply hear it by listening to the engine and can feel it under acceleration, or lack thereof. Also you can have your timing checked either by yourself with a timing light or can take it to a shop. Since it sounds like your also kinda concerned with how well your engine is running and performing then I would also have them do a compression test.
As for the bosh wires, all your paying for is the name. Stock wires will do just as much and be cheaper and probably last longer too. -------------------- Teh Celica sleeps for Winter '06. Suspension overhaul begins........
