Hello!

First off i would like to appoligize for any stupid questions this topic may bring due to fact im not 100% sure i understand the braking system in the celica's

So i have a:

99 gt stock

My q is:

1.My car today was driving fine than all of a sudden the back of my car sounded like a piece of metal scrapping a chalk board... (it was so bad i stoped driving for fear of messing my car-but i was far from home) So after pulling over and seeing if i got something stuck in my tire's i went home with this horrible noise trying to drive as slow as possible... On the way i smelt like something was burning but since i was in a residental area i thought it was a cookout.... and the fact that the noise stoped. So im at home and start to look in more detail and than i realize the smell was coming from my brakes.... so my first thought is to just clean it out... so i fill a glass with hot water and pour it on my brake... so much steam came out of it and i realizez that those werent rust spot but the pads were bright orange....

So i know my pads must be bad but what i dont understand is the rear of a fwd car is the emergency brake? well im very carefull not to do anything to my car like pulling my e-brakes unless it is dire emergency.. so why would my pads be gone?

And why all of a sudden it made noise... didnt even know it was a problem(let alone go from quiet cruise to flamming orange)

when was the last time you replaced your pads - or last time you checked how much pad life it had left? --

directly from a post ago from mac..

QUOTE
seized calipers .. one of the things i now best....

how to tell if you have one
buring metal smell... annoying sound at all speeds ... car pulls just a little to that one side....
when inspecting the caliper you see rust around the sliders ... and is imposiable to puttl pads out ...

how to fix

options one.. get reconditions calipers from toyota /parts store swap out ..

option two .. get a impact hammer/ air hammer / what every you want to call it ... and tap the sliders till the caliper comes apart... then lub that baby up ... after you sand all the rust off.... get that bitch nice and smooth ...

ok is the noise coming from the front or the rear???? ur caliper might be locked up. my gf's 6gc when she first got it was the same way i took the rear tire off to change the pads and i couldnt get the caliper off. where it slides on to that stud.....was seased up so the pad was constantly rubingin so i just got a new caliper and mounting bracket for 90 bucks and that was the end of it.......oh and the brakes work like so....the front ones apply the most pressure then the rear ones help it along to the stop ( if ya have all wheel disc brakes ur e-brake pads are under ur rear rotor),but im sure its the same way if ya have drums in the back, ....oh and that burning metal smell u have, dont breathe that in....its asbestos from ur pads. and u know what disease that can cause and trust me u dont want it.

You could have gotten a small rock caught between your brake pad and you're disk in the rear. That would make a sound like that. In any case, take it apart and find out.

hes got a 99 gt like mine, im sure hes got 4 discs brakes, but check all pads and calipers. you also might might have warped rotors.

Thanks for the reply's all... i took my rear tires off and i changed the pads... they were pretty bad and i think i might need to get my rotors resurfaced. Was told by someone to just buy new ones because the cost would end up being about the sam. So for now im running with new pads and im gonna save up money for some new rotors(drilled what ive been wanting).

As far as the callipers go i didnt know they could do that so thanks for the heads up.. as you have read im not very knowledegeable about the inner workings so i will also be trying to save up for some new ones... I think i saw one painted already that looked nice but i forgot where... ill have to ask someone around town smile.gif

But it just seemed odd that i had no problems with it than after stopping at a store and leaving that it happened.. Than when i went home it took a couple hours to cool enough to touch.. Oh well smile.gif

Just wondering tho... do the back ones drag while the car is in motion? Because im not sure if this is what u meant by siezing up: Took tire off and moved caliper to get to pad used a c clamp to push the insert back after putting the pad back on i taped my brakes to lock it back and place and i checked the calipers and it locked on the pads in a tight postion again, like it might be possible to drag.
