I was thinking to buy the C-1 replica hood for my car but i dont want to leave it carbon fiber black i wanted to paint match it to my car but is there anything special i need to do because its carbon fiber?

i would think u would have to sand it down like any other material primer and paint but u might need a special primer that will bond with the resin but i have no idea for sure

no its not, you have to sand the clearcoat off very carefully with some special sandpaper. If you go past the clearcoat you will ahve to get another hood because the CF will be ruined. It is possible to get painted tho. ill ask my bodyguy what stuff he uses

ive been looking everywhere for this speical sandpaper and cant find it. ive also been searching for a good 30 mins on a how to paint carbon fiber and all i can find is how to paint somethign to look like carbon fiber. i dont see why it woudl be hard to wet sand it then primer and paint it if you go through the clear ull just hit the resin wihc will just help smooth it out since it usually has some imperfections and little dips in there any ways. if your really worried about making it lay flat use a high building primer to fill in those imperfections and sand that down re primer wet sand and paint and clear like normal. it can be made to look oem but its going to alot of work for a hood. your spending all this money on the hood why cover it up? i dunno it just doesnt make sense to me to spend our good hard earned money on something expenisve like carbonfiber and paint it lol. but good luck with the painting i hope the outcome looks awsome and your happy thats all the matters

haha well tis not sandpaper thats carbon fiber specific. its just some different sand paper.

but im sure if you take it to a bodyshop they can do it no problem. I was acctually going to paint my hood as well but then once i saw the hood up close after opening it it just looked so great so i saved money and paint by keepin it CF. Red and CF look good together. but like punkuup said, what you like is what matters

there is no special paint or special sandpaper noob.

You wetsand the surface (like any other body paint job) primer, sand, ect.

its painted like anything else. You just can't sand too deep or you mess up the weave. different paper

FYI: if you sand past the clearcoat you don't hit carbonfiber, you hit resin....if you sand the piece to oblivion and sand through the resin then you hit carbon fiber.

so answer to the OP: NO there is nothing special you do to a carbon fiber piece over any other body work.

yes but u have no idea how easy it is to sand right past the resin. Its extremely easy. i never said anything about special paint either. is it really that big of deal you know one thing more than me. No reason to call someone a noob when they arent one. I was just passing on some knowledge. IM SORRY IF I DIDNT SAY SOMETHING THAT YOU KNEW!

ok ok guys i appreciate the help we are all brothers here lets not get catty maybe i will just keep the hood carbon fiber and get black rims with a red lip to match the color of my paint it will be a while since the hood is 600 some odd dollars

hahah at least in the end were all still friends during my search i was reading somethign about a speical primer thats supposed to flex without chipping but i could not find a def answer to the specail primer it was just metioned a few times so i fugred id through it out there but hey good luck oon the car i just found out im starting my very soon im cataloging parts tomarrow let the build thread begin

its not really a special primer. there is nothing "special" to painting this stuff.

This involves normal paint not just primer, but they add a flex agent (which is its own entity separate of the paint/primer) to the paint/primer which prevents chipping and such on pieces which will flex. This is done on all cars.

use a scuff pad...........

there is no special way to paint CF. It's still a paint job; and you'd treat it like anything else that's already been painted/coated. Dont go ballistic on the sanding. You just wanna create a toothing for the prime to stick. Preferably wetsand. regular will work too, it'll just take longer/more work to achieve the same results. prime, resand & spray using a matching OEM color. (located on your VIN sticker.) or whatever color you wanna use. nothing special too it. Basic job.

Yea i can tell, but i explained to him that my body guys uses these fancy names for stuff that ive never heard, so what he told me he could haev ment wet/dry paper. Idk if im wrong, i mean everyone is wrong sometimes, i thought i new something.kinda did. just tryin to help a member out. but i just didnt like they way he comes off. he could of found a better less sarcastic way of correcting me

OK GUYS ONLY READ 1/2 WAY THREW BUT HERE IT GOES...... Im a painter well known in my area head painter at the shop im at and shop foreman take a look at my car if you wanna see some of my work.... PPG, RM(diamont,BASF), sikkens, and dupont certified as well as I-CAR Platinum certified..... Painting anything carbon fiber is just as painting a fiberglass hood or even a metal hood... NO DIFFERENCE.... HOWEVER I do recomend using a adhesion permoter that is used on raw plastic bumpers before applying anything.... now if its a new hood all you have to do is wet sand or DA sand with 600-800grit paper let it dry wax and grease it which is the prewash... then apply your adhesion permoter let it flash off for 3-5 mins then paint as usual.... If you go threw the clearcoat that is on it or its fadded away to bare carbonfiber to apply paint just get a 320grit scuff not a heavy sand take a red scotchbrite scuff it along the edges make sure there is no shinny left.. prime it then proceed to sand with 6-800 grit until completely smooth and paint dont forget before applying any primer or paint use the adhesion permoter... now if you just want to simply reclear it to get the original look even if its faded just 6-800 the hood and scotchbrite it with a gray and clear and your done......
