For about a week or two I've had this low whine that I can hear when I start it up and when I'm driving anywhere below 2k RPM. I've looked under the hood while it's running, and I can only guess that it's the alternator. I did have my timing belt/water pump done in October, and I've heard they tend to whine, so could it just be that?

belts? As they wear out, they tend to make some noise... IDK what kind of whine is it?

quick way to see if its the alternator....unplug the connector that goes to the back of it. if the whining stops its probably the alt whining a little. dont worry about it till it stops working.
otherwise the intake can whine a little as well as the trans, more so in 1st gear for an automatic. -------------------- |

Cool deal, I'll try the alternator trick. And it's a manual, but I doubt it's my intake since it's stock. -Matt |

also double check if the tension on the belts are tight..
cold/loose/worn belts will tend to make that whining sound after/during start up especially during acceleration in the low rpms. -------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |

hey ive always had this whistling sound when accelerating in my car...doesnt seem to be anything unusual and nothing has come of it yet i think its just a natural noise the car makes...we could be talking about something totally different...saturday ehh?

Do you have a stock or aftermarket intake? An upgraded intake could make a whistling sound at higher RPM. |

Mine whistles a little too, but I know it's because of the intake. The reason is that the box that inhibits the sound of the air rushing through the filter isn't there anymore.

It's prob. the Harmonic Balancer. Mines making the same whine too but I think its either coming from the timing belt being to tight or the Harmonic balancer is bad because its got a lot of chips on making it wobble maybe.
