for the record, (i think) all of the 60gig PS3s have the hardware for BC. The earlier 80gig models have software emulation for BC and the rest are not to keep the cost down.

Id try to find a 60gig (or get a new 40gig if you dont want BC) and get a 250gig drive from newegg for $70

I will say that the BC on my 80gig isnt that great. I downloaded a psone game off the store and it doesnt play too well. i have yet to put in a ps2 game however

and like i said in the first post its COMPLETELY FREE TO PLAY ONLINE

just need a HDMI cable for HD. Cheap ones are same as expensive ones wink.gif

Online is totally FREE out of the box.

Good games:

Uncharted Drake's Fortune
Call of Duty 4
Little Big planet
etc.

What type of game you like?

Yes you'll want an HDMI cable, you can get them for real cheap: ~$5. Don't go to Best Buy they'll offer a Monster HDMI cable for like, $100 when it's digital so the signal gets there or it doesn't there's no interference.

And no, you don't have to install ALL games. I bought SOCOM: Confrontation recently and that DID involve a game install - not sure why. But all my other games don't require that.

YES! It is FREE to play online. Just create a PSN username and some other info and you're good to go.

Good games that will be cheap: Uncharted: Drakes Fortune! IMO one of the best games I've ever played. It's fun, its replayable, it's beautiful to look at. Assassins Creed is a good game, I sold mine because I beat it and had no desire to play it again. I have StarWars Force Unleashed also, which is a little short, but it's fun and replayable. There is also expansion levels planned for it also. GTA4 I never play. I regret buying it. It's just too much like the other ones.

Okay, online is free unless i keep something. Got it. Just any old LAN internet connection is needed?

What the hell is little big planet? looks strange...

I like action/adventure games, usualy with a nice big map biggrin.gif like spiderman games, gta's, legend of zelda, and i have a passion for Sonic the hedgehog games :thumbups: i dislike first person shooters; i prefer the 3rd person perspective. Trying to grap up a ps3 before Prototype comes out biggrin.gif

Is that what the interfaces starts as? Meaning does the back of the PS3 have the HDMI out? Because i've already got an hdmi-hdmi laying arround in my closet right now, plus my TV suports that kind of thing. So I probably wont have to buy anything else then, yeah?

You're still misunderstanding. You can't "keep" anything, but there's nothing to keep anyways. The games have online playability so either you just play them online in some capacity for free. Some, not all, games are available as a download, instead of buying the disc in the store. Often these games are cheaper ($40) instead of $60. This was the case for Warhawk. Demos are free, expansions cost money. For example, a 3 track "pack" for GH3 might cost $6.

You will need broadband internet. I use wireless G and it seems to be ok (for the most part).

HDMI to HDMI cable? That's just an HDMI cable. Yes the PS3 has an HDMI out, as well as A/V out. If your TV has HDMI in then you just connect the PS3 directly to it and your golden.

lol, I meant that it's free as long as i dont download anything onto my hard-drive like an expansion pack or a psone game or something.

As for broadband, I'll be using ethernet (CAT5) hook up. Is that possible? or MUST i buy a wireless hub/router?

alot of tv's dont have HDMI on them still. Plus i've got like 40 different hi-def wires, ranging in all possible combonations. i've got hdmi-anything, lol. that's why i refere to it as hdmi-hdmi. rolleyes.gif

The PS3 has a ethernet port on it, you don't have to use wireless.

So to sum it up:

PS3 can be used with HDMI, optical, or A/V. It can be used wireless internet, or wired internet.

My current setup is HDMI out to the 42'' 1080p plasma and optical audio out to my 7.1 surround sound.

Hey D-Man, can I borrow your thread real quick?

Which PS3 plays the earlier PS games? The whole reason why I want to stick with PS is because of my Final Fantasy Collection that I spent so much on trying to recover from the past. I keep hearing 60G PS3 but people tell me all but the 40G. I want to know 100% sure before I leap into getting one, that is the main reason why I haven't gotten one yet. Also, is it true they are region free so you can play imports?

Thanks

Sorry D-man, but I didn't want to make another thread just for that.

Manphibian is right - according to the PS3 website, there is no longer backwards compatibility with PS2 games, but some PS titles are still supported.

http://www.us.playstation.com/PS3/Systems/Compare

QUOTE
Due to the availability of an extensive line-up of PS3™ system titles, the 160GB PS3™ system is not backwards compatible with PlayStation®2 system titles, but does maintain backwards compatibility for some original PlayStation® titles.

Due to the availability of an extensive line-up of PS3™ system titles, the 80GB PS3™ system is not backwards compatible with PlayStation®2 system titles, but does maintain backwards compatibility for some original PlayStation® titles.

So you'll have to find an older 60gig that will play them.

IMO: If you have a PS2 - you don't need backwards compatibility since you have the system. Not to mention, you'll probably never play the PS2 titles anymore.

But if you mean go rent a game, copy it onto your HDD and return it, and then be able to play it, no you can't do that.

Answered already... rolleyes.gif

Jeez, c'mon you guys aren't reading!

Older 60gig is backwards compatible.

No new PS3s are backwards compatible with PS2 games.

Little big planet is essentially a 1-4 player platform game.

The difference is you can make your owl levels, and publish them for others to play.....

Great fun game, great for kids and adults, if you're creative.

no, i'm still a bit confused. it seems to be guaranteed about the oldest 60GB; but there seems to be some confusion on the 80 & 160 models.

EDIT:

Problem solved, i was told correctly before. Only the 80/60/20 Gig models with 4 usb ports are backwards compatable:

I think you will need an adapter - but there is a menu selection for older memory cards so you can use them.

What do you mean the deal is getting worse? Don't get that.
